Another good video, Mike, but I wanted to point out a couple of errors, if I may. You stated that alcohol stoves are not permitted during fire bans, but that's not correct, though it is a widely repeated mistake. Most types of alcohol stoves are forbidden, but Trangia stoves, because of their design, conform to the provincial regulations on stove use during fire bans. Trangia alcohol stoves use liquid fuel AND have a lid that closes so as to shut off the flame instantly (as do some other brands of alcohol stoves). The DIY pop can stove you showed in the video, obviously would not be permitted. I'm attaching a screenshot of the relevant rules from the province's website on your FB page. Later in the video you stated that during a "total fire ban", only the gas stoves are permitted, but in fact, during a total ban, all stoves (and all fires) are prohibited. But most years, fire bans are not that comprehensive and permit stove use, provided they meet the conditions I described in the regulations I referred to earlier. Hope this helps, - Martin

Yes, in principle one can snuff out an alcohol burner if one has some vessel that fits over it and cuts off the air supply to snuff out the fire, but this would only work to snuff out the flame instantly if the cover/vessel were small enough to leave little to no oxygen around the burner. A typical pot, bowl, or cup would not be so form-fitting, allowing the flame to burn on for a short time before the oxygen was used up. Also, a person might not have such a vessel near at hand, so the authorities who make these rules want people to use stoves that have, built into them, either a shut-off valve that cuts off the flame instantly or a lid/cover that is form-fitting and designed for the same purpose and is considered part of the stove and sold with it. I had one I made out of a can, but when I tested it prior to filming for this video, it leaked all over my balcony after it was ignited. Had a big ol' patch of burning alcohol on my balcony (concrete though, nothing flammable or damageable)
A fourth option would be a collapsible grill, such as the little Coghlans Pack Grill. Mine can not only be used along with a campfire, but it will also clear my gas, twigg, & alcohol stoves for grilling or better placement.

Well articulated. I’ve been looking into this for a bit and your video was the most concise and useful information I came across. Personally, I think I’m in favor of the wood stove. It seems more sustainable, and just fun compared to the other options. After all, building a wood fire (even a small one in a little can) is just an integral part of camping (at least to me). That said, those pesky fire bans make the gas canister furnaces almost a must-have.
I finally found a spot nearby that no one goes into, that's a really great place to set up shop to film stuff. So my past few videos have made use of it (even in the rain, as with my 3d printed carabiner video)! So going forward, most of the filming/intros should be in the woods!

People use gas stove because of fire bans in the US, which is sad because they involve the most transportation costs/pollution for the fuel, and more waste created per liter. It can also be somewhat dangerous if tipped over, because the flame wont just go out if it happens, but it will most likely never be an issue as you should be able to pat down any embers with your foot. It's the least environment friendly option, yet the most used - and almost enforced by law. Alcohol stoves should all have some protection against being tipped over because they are honestly a fire hazzard, but twig stoves are perfectly safe! Twig stoves offer a container for the flames and coals, which almost completely neutralizes the threat of spreading a fire. Unless you are an idiot or have ill intentions you can not miss-use one and create a wildfire. Let things burn out and then use the poop trowel you already have to burry the ash or biochar that is left over - you reduce waste created, clean up dead biomass from the woods and even help fertilize the soil with potash.
For legal reasons. The stove keeps the burning twigs off the forest floor, which reduces the risk og starting a forest fire. Where I live, Denmark, you get a fine equivalent to 1000 US dollars for starting even a small fire on the ground. You have to use a raised stove or a designated camp site.
Your "twig stove" is actually NOT a twig stove. It is designed to use a trangia style alcohol stove, but I suppose if you didn't have any alcohol, twigs would work, after a certain fashion, even though it's not designed for it.

Nice vid. I prefer the twig stove and camp fires to the other methods. If there is a burn ban then I take the jet boil along.
