- In this video, I will show you the Sigma 16mm F/1.4, a $400 wide angle APS-C lens that also works GREAT on a Sony A7R iii, or A7iii using crop/super 35 mode, with full autofocus for Video and Stills.

Well explained, just what I was looking for keep up the good work :)
Just noticed your comment, thank you very much!
Great job 👏🏻 thank you i just bought sony A7Riii and been looking for a 1.4 lense
You're welcome. Just remember this is an APSC lens and not full frame.
@@The_Retro_Room i appreciate your support and reply
I think I’ll buy sony 20mm 1.8
What do you think?
Yes, the 20 1.8 is a great lens of you need something that wide!
@@The_Retro_Room thank you 🙏🏻 and keep posting good videos please
You have a potential to get to 1M subs easy
I sure hope you are correct..... To tell you that truth I've been getting discouraged because during covid my latest videos haven't gotten many views and I've considered quitting.....
Was considering this but now I'm not. Thank you. Valuable info
No problem!
what is you shot using clear image zoom instead of aps-c mode? you could zoom to 1.2 instead of 1.5
if i use aps-c lens and just cleare image zoom 1.2, without apsc mode will i losee resolution or will have 24mp
Amazing photos. I can't tell a difference. This lens would be awesome on an A7R iv 26mp in APS C mode.
Thanks Duke!! Yes, you are correct, sweet combo on the A7R iv for sure!
nice. simply amazing. great video. save me a lot of money. thinking to get 24mm f1.4 which will cripple my funds. now im going with this so i can use on my A7RIII a6400 and a6500. i can still get 18mp on A7RIII, sweet. thanks a lots
That's great! and the beauty of it is if you end up not liking it for some reason you can always sell it and go with other options in the future!
I have plan tu buy a73, now have sigma lens 16mm
You might also consider the Tamron full frame prime lenses.
Have you tried to use it without the crop-mode and crop it in post-production? It would be interesting for me if the useable area without vignette and with acceptable sharpness is actually larger then the aps-c aspect ratio. I heard that a lot of aps-c lenses actually fill out the FF-Sensor a lot more than just the aps-c dimensions. Can you second that, or did you had some other experience?
I’d say you are correct, I have the 7R ii with this sigma lens and I’ve been cropping in post. For example I find that if you shoot in lower light around 5.6f there is very little vignette, making great photos. Haven’t used it for video yet.
Good to know!
@preiaen No, I haven't! I'll have to give it a try!
Great video. G Master prime costs too damn much. Sigma 16mm is a great option
Thank you!
Is the blur the same using the same lens in APSC and Full Frame?
Yes
No its not. Depth of Field changes with sensor size. 1.4 on aps-c will me the same DOF as a 1.8 on a full frame.
Do you think that, the image quality will be the same as on an APSC-camera? Besides the MP-count ofcourse? I'm thinking of switching to FullFrame and already own this lens
I think it depends. Which full frame are you thinking of switching to?
@@The_Retro_Room Sony A7 II at first
@@HenryvdVeer on the A7ii you'll naturally have to use CROP mode so that you don't have the massive vignette, and doing so would bring the resolution down to 10MP. So, a loss in megapixles for sure. on my A7Riii I still get 18mp in crop more. If you can live with 10MP i'd give it a go!
NELSON 5 TECH I’ve been shooting stills with my 7R ii with this lens, but cropping in Lightroom after, not using super35. Do you think shooting in this method would save me a tiny bit of resolution?
Yes, it's quite possible! Why not do an experiment: take the same shot with and without crop mode and do a comparison.
So would you say this lense isn’t worth it for filming with the a7iii?
For 1080p video i think it would ok, for pictures you get a 10MP image instead of 24 in full frame mode and that might be too low of a resolution for photographers. So, if you aren't shooting 4k i think you would be good, otherwise look elsewhere....
@@The_Retro_Room thank you i just bought the lense and had second thoughts after your video! Appreciate it
is it cropped when using an a73?
Yes since the a73 is a full frame. If you didn't shoot in apsc mode you would have a large vignette.
Isn't Tamron F2.8 28-70 mm is already an answer for full-frame people?
Sure, but you cannot compare the two since one is a prime and one is a zoom. My whole point is if you have the 16mm for APSC already, you can still use it on your full frame "albeit in crop mode with a lower megapixel count" but even then you would get 24mm which is wider than the 28-70
So for sure, the full frame lenses are a better choice for the full frame bodies "naturally" so by all means stick with the full frame glass.
How far does it zoom?
It doesn't! It's a fixed focal length lens
I dont understand why it's called 16mm lense if on both the A7 series AND APS c series.... it becomes 24mm. Lmao. I need a lense that is wide like 10, 16, or 18mm and cant figure out how to get it with these sony cameras. I think canon has better options but I dnt like canon as much
That's because it's an APSC lens.. aps-c lenses are still described in 35 mm equivalents, but on an aps-c body you have to apply a 1.5 x crop. And it is also a 1.5 x crop running on a full frame camera in crop mode..... Sony does make a 10-18mm zoom, and third-party manufacturers such as ROKINON DO MAKE ULTRA-WIDE LENSES. for instance they make a 12mm f/2 i believe, which would be 18mm on an aps-c body
You said this lens is made for an APS-C sensor, but then said that if you throw it on an APS-C body, it will give you a 24mm focal length... It would be a 16mm focal length on either camera, you are just having a loss of resolution with the full frame.
No sir, you are incorrect. Sony APS-C cameras such as the A6000 and full frame Sony cameras such as the A7R3 when using APS-C mode have a crop factor of 1.5x so, that 16mm sigma lens has a field of view of 24mm. If you don't believe me, do some research.
Here, this is directly from sigma's website regarding the 16mm 1.4:
The new SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary is the world’s first interchangeable lens for mirrorless Sony E-mount cameras in the APS-C format to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and F1.4 brightness.
@@The_Retro_Room I see the misunderstanding. I'm reading the page you copied. They aren't saying the lens is an APS-C lens, they are referring to "Sony's APS-C mirrorless" cameras and that it will fit those mounts.
It is a full frame lens, not an APS-C lens, which explains the "35mm equivalent". Your video is misleading/inaccurate to state that this lens is made for APS-C cameras. It is dedicated for full frame, yet can be used optionally on APS-C.
@@Francisco-Danconia Again you are incorrect. APS-C lenses are described in 35mm equivalents. This is NOT a full frame lens which is why you have to run a full frame camera in APS-C mode when using this lens, otherwise you'll have a large amount of vignetting. This is NOT a full frame lens. If you do a bit of research you'll find that this is the case will all manufactures APS-C lenses as well. I am not being misleading, you are misinformed and need to do some research. Go look it up.
Below I have included a link to a list of Sony APS-C LENSES, if you read the article you will notice that the Sony 10-18 "an APS-C lens" after the crop factor of 1.5x becomes a 15-27mm. The 16-50mm becomes a 24-75mm etc.
