What a great video too !! They all look like really good friends !!! They sort of remind me of the Mavericks !! I love the face of the lead singer .. The bearded guy in the black Stetson .. I have to go to Texas now .. Pay my respects to them !! This song means a lot to me .. It was my children's lullaby . My eldest daughter's wedding song .. And it was my husband and myself's special song . We used to snog to it and see who came up for air first !!! Lol happy days .. Thanks for the post xxxxx
Wow. This must have been awesome. I guess Rudy Mata is J Frank Wilson since if he is the main Volcalist of this song, this must have been him back in 64'. :D What a great recording. RIP Rudy Mata.
Hi everyone, my brother Bill put our 2006 version on just for fun. J. Frank did a nice job covering Wayne Cochran's original version back in 1964. Rudy Mata does a nice job singing it in a different tempo than Frank or Pearl Jam. Bill's comments are directed at a couple of bands back in the East who claim to be the original group. Also, check out "Travelin' Man" Cav's on TH-cam featuring Rudy.
I'm 54 now, but for as far back as I can remember....I've always considered this to have been my FIRST favorite song. I'm pretty sure I was experiencing my FIRST intense "puppy luv" around the same time. Of course it was unrequited. She lived across the street, and I think she had a crush on the 6th grader around the corner. Heard she grew up to become Miss Modesto, so at least I know I had good taste at some point...
The idea for this particular guitar arrangement came from a Foo Fighter's song. I added the car burn-out intro which might be a tad too much. Our idea was to veer away from the original 45 arrangement by Wayne Cochran (copied by J. Frank and the band in 1964). Rudy wanted to do the original arrangement but I talked him out of it.
I've covered this tune hundreds of times. The bass part is a challenge. I usually simplify it these days. Probably why Peal Jam revised it too. Between the timing and complexity, not n easy cover. Definitely one of the top 25 songs to come out of the period.
my daddy sat on my bed and played the guitar and sang this song to me till i would fall asleep, and i really thought he made it up, till i heard it on the radio when i was 18, NOT BY PEARL jam! by j frank wilson, and i was soooo mad! thought they stole my daddy song! lol love it good memories, not so proud of the pearl jam redo just not the same!
El tema fue escrito por Wayne Cochrane en 1961, basado en un hecho real. No tuvo mucho éxito, hasta que lo grabó J.Frank Wilson en 1964, con gran éxito.
I heard the 1964 version on XM Radio today and it got me thinking about the backup singer - the woman who mirrors J. Frank's voice. It is very unique and really contributes to the song. Does anyone know who she is and did she go on to record additional songs?
There were 5 young ladies in the recording studio singing the descant part along with J Frank. Snake told me they were studio singers, not a regular part of the Cavaliers. The descant part is (sadly) missing from this version.
I've played with the Cavaliers (guitarist) several times here in San Angelo TX over the years James Thomas was the singer (not with the original band) I also know Snake (Roland) Atkinson who has a transmission business here and original cavalier vocalist Alton Baird (now Alton Baird & the Moonlighters).WClark007 is correct about Sid Holmes as he formed the 'original band' as guitarist so this is true that this would be the original band (pre J Frank Wilson RIP) Love the song.
Wilson, with or without the Cavaliers, continued to release records at least through 1978. While he continued to tour and play he, like Del Shannon, never got over his disappointment with his sagging career. Wilson died on October 4, 1991, from prolonged alcoholism.
I used to sing this song walking to school in 3rd grade after Michelle McAdams moved away during the summer vacation. It's funny almost 60 years later I still think about her and my first kiss. We watched Mary Poppins in the theater and we held hands through the whole movie.
I looked it up a couple weeks ago and he said that he thought the song up after a few car crashes occurred on a particular highway he drove. So actually, sadly, it's not true. Or at least it didn't appear to be that way.
His murder had nothing to do with a money dispute, it had to do with his step daughter. Guys name was David Matthew Merrill, know what your talking about before you praise a man.
It's not the pace of Pearl Jam's cover I liked. I think its a sound of desperation in his voice that none of the rest have at all. It really feels like heart break, rather than a catchy tune that happens to have really sad lyrics.
Miss ya Rudy
Remember going to the drive in to see a movie and they always played this!
One Of The Best Song Tat Came out in The 60

Rudy Mata -- world class vocalist
yeah he was great, I go to see him with the cavs live... so sad he passed.
Only 187 likes? What the hell is wrong with people? I just love this song.

FEB 23 2018💔😢😣
Sorry for your loss!
Always loved this song. Just to let you know.
This is one of the better covers of this song. Cochran was proud I'm sure.
he is proud of the money
WOW......very Great!!!
I am so saddened that this had to happen to my roommate and her family. I'm here for you Miss B Mata ):
my daddy sat on my bed and played the guitar and sang this song to me till i would fall asleep, and i really thought he made it up, till i heard it on the radio when i was 18, NOT BY PEARL jam! by j frank wilson, and i was soooo mad! thought they stole my daddy song! lol love it good memories, not so proud of the pearl jam redo just not the same!
Sid is my uncle and I am so sadden at this loss.
hey guys great job!!
Very true!!
I saw these guys in the late 60s at the Goodfellow AFB NCO club in San Angelo, Texas.
I think I was there on guitar
@@TheCavaliers1956so cool to see you here, I’m a huge fan! 15 years old, wish old school country and rockabilly would come back.

I remember this song from
1959 --- J. Frank Wilson.
ANY QUESTIONS?
Just like the 155 episodes of Combat! this really happened.
Wilson, with or without the Cavaliers, continued to release records at least through 1978. While he continued to tour and play he, like Del Shannon, never got over his disappointment with his sagging career. Wilson died on October 4, 1991, from prolonged alcoholism.
I know it’s been 12 years but Del Shannon had a big revival in the 80s and before he died he finished up his Rock On album that dropped in 1991
I used to sing this song walking to school in 3rd grade after Michelle McAdams moved away during the summer vacation. It's funny almost 60 years later I still think about her and my first kiss. We watched Mary Poppins in the theater and we held hands through the whole movie.
"They're Hanging Me Tonight" by Marty Robbins ?? Sound familiar ?
he looks like Garth Brooks....love the video
Sid passed away a few months ago.
I looked it up a couple weeks ago and he said that he thought the song up after a few car crashes occurred on a particular highway he drove. So actually, sadly, it's not true. Or at least it didn't appear to be that way.
RIP Rudy Mata
The original is of Wayne Cochran (1962).
this song remind me big me by foo fighters
very nice. any chance of getting some live shots of the current band?
Tis true.
Hello dear do you have a facebook link, you are just a dream !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Gurli from Denmark.
@1959buddyh What are you talking about? These guys are all in their 60's
Minor point here. The original was by Wayne Cochran, although the J. Frank Wilson cover is best remembered.
@WClark007 i would love to know how to contact him...i may have a family reunion next summer and want it to be special..
I love this song, but I prefer J. Frank Wilson's voice over any other vocalist's version of this song, even the original. It felt authentically 60's.
His murder had nothing to do with a money dispute, it had to do with his step daughter. Guys name was David Matthew Merrill, know what your talking about before you praise a man.
If you are still stuck in 1950 I guess this would be great to you.
yes! stars and stripes kiss
@thesaddoc thats because ythe song is based on a true event that happend
Who is that lady with Rudy at 2:05?
It's not the pace of Pearl Jam's cover I liked. I think its a sound of desperation in his voice that none of the rest have at all. It really feels like heart break, rather than a catchy tune that happens to have really sad lyrics.
sad to head of Rudy;s death,
I probably got 200 of the views by myself...✔💯
u might wanna check ur math again its 2010 and thats more than 8 try more like 18 years
This is not the Original
This is DEFINETLY not the same group! Look how young these guys are. This isn't the record group for sure!!
J. Frank Wilson had one of the better covers of this song. The original, performed by author Wayne Cochran did not see much success.
Miss ya Rudy
