Nice jig smalljaw, a gray ghost for sure, I'm in awe of your expertise . Just started tying, having a little trouble as where to start cutting off hair on a bucktail or craft hair, do you start top, bottom and work to top, sides or just what looks like what you need/want? Thanks
Thank you very much KyRangerDog!!!! Craft fur is attached to fabric and is all the same length on the entire sheet. So you can cut you craft fur anywhere but just make sure you cut it off at the base. As for bucktail, you have to cut it off at the hide and then trim to the length you need. The main reason is that bucktail is tapered and all the action is in the tips. When you trim bucktail you never cut the tips, you always trim it from the base. The hair at the tip of the tail is a little finer and doesn't flare much when you tie it. That is the area of the tail I use when I want a slender profile. As you move down the hair will become a little more stiff and will flare, the bottom will flare more than the middle portion. So once you get some experience with bucktail you will be able to get the desired look and action just by choosing what part of the tail to get the hair from. I hope this helps a bit.
Hello Smalljaw , I tell you what , That is a Beautiful Jig !!! I take a screenshot of the ones I really like , which is most of them ! And save it for reference ! I hope you are ok with that ? If I am a Crappie angler ? Haw , if you only knew !!!! Great Video Sir ! Take Care and Be Safe !
Thank you Rocky!!! That is what I try to do, I want it to be easy. I go slow and try to explain every step but if there are still questions please feel free to email me and I'll help if I can!!
Thank you Mark, that comment made my entire day!!!! What you said is why I do this as I want to inspire others to create their own lures. The best part is you can get in at any level you want, you can buy premade heads already painted if you simply want to tie. You can buy unpainted heads if you wish to paint and tie, or you can get all the supplies including a furnace, molds and hooks and start from scratch as I do. Thank you for your continued support, I hope you make the leap and give it a shot!!
Great video I like your jigs and videos as well. You explain things well and your very detailed. I tie mainly flies. But I do tie jigs really small size 10 or 12 hook. I don't have the equment to pour my own. I hope you have fun and keep fishing
Thank you very much for the compliment, that truly means a lot coming from a fly tier!!!! I can so down to about a 1/48oz jig with a size 8 hook, tiny flies are for the masters...LOL!!!!
Thank you for the kind words, it is deeply appreciated!!!! The collar on this jig really gives it a nice profile and the color just adds to it. I've tied this with a plain black feather as well as a plain white for the color but the grizzly feather just looks better in the water but they all get bit really well.
Also, what kind of UV flash did you use and place to purchase? Thank you! BTW, great video as always! You are one of the best on TH-cam in filming and explaining the process of tying flies. So many tiers do not realize that if the camera angles and view settings are not good the video is almost of no benefit to viewers. Something definitely to consider when going to all the effort to produce and in growing a channel.
Kerry, thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it!!! The flash is UV Gray, I'll leave the link where I get it from and the color code is 430. barlowstackle.com/krystal-flash/
Just wondering how you trim weed guards? Do you trim weed guards differently based on the weight of the jig? Really appreciate you showing us how you do what you do.
Ken, I'm guessing this is a general question not pertaining to this specific jig. Anyway, I trim, or don't trim a weed guard for various reasons, but I'll try to explain it as best I can. I buy medium stiff weed guards so I tend to trim them because trimming the guard will make it a little more stiff. I will bend the weed guard down and make look to see what part of the guard falls between the hook point and the barb, that is where I trim it. The exception to this is on smaller swim jigs that use a regular FG-30 weed guard, I want the guard to be a medium stiffness so I actually leave the full length and it hasn't seemed to affect hook sets so far so I continue to do the same thing. One of the reasons I use the medium stiff weed guard is because I like trimming them a bit, if I get heavy weed guard and trim them they end up too stiff and I believe it has interfered with hook sets in the past so now I stay with all medium stiff weed guards.
The bobbin I use in this video is a Stonfo regular bobbin. I have 5 of 6 different ones, I also use a Griffin ceramic, a Stonfo Elite compact, and a Rite CERMAG bobbin. I'll leave a link to the one in this video but as far a recommendation, well it depends on the thread size and type of jig. For bass jigs that I use 210 flat waxed nylon thread I like the griffin and the Rite bobbin since those are made for using more tension or pressure. For jigs that I use 70 to 140 denier the Stonfo regular or the Elite compact work really well. www.jsflyfishing.com/stonfo-bobbin
How you doing sir Carl from Northeast Ohio again I just stumbled upon this video that is absolutely amazing I am absolutely going to tie that like I am a crappie junkie sometimes a little bit of bass good talking with you again sir God bless
Thank you Carl!!!! That is a really good pattern that works. Most crappie angler that tie jigs will have similar patterns, this one is just a variation on the old gray ghost pattern.
GREAT VID , IVE TIED HUNDREdS OF JIGS LEARnING MOSTLY FROM you !!!!! thanks for putting these out , i share n tell any body who's interested , THANKS AGAIN !!!!
I find your videos to be great. Istarted tying my own jigs, I use midge crystal on everything haha. Can you go over putting a bait keeper on a shank? I’ve seen a video of you doing before but when I tie mine, I use a paper clip bent to shape, and it stays but it will twist inside the rap, pivoting on the shank of you will, appreciate it videos keep it going, thank you.
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it!!! Tying a keeper in isn't hard, I'll tell you what to do. Make sure you have a thread base started so the keeper is against the thread rather than the hook shank. After the thread base is ready add some super glue to the thread and then put the keeper on and begin tying. Make a few wraps and some more glue and you're done and the keeper shouldn't move.
Carl, I greatly appreciate your kind words and support, thank you!!!! I pour all my own jigs but you can purchase a lot of them from Barlow's Tackle or Lure Parts Online.
