Thank you for the compliment!!!! You are 100% right, you can tie this up using different color chenille and craft fur or Arctic fox. I tie this same patter using chartreuse craft fur. I also tie it using plain white chenille and for that one I tie in pearl Krystal flash.
I actually do this same thing for my jigs. Mine are: cut collar to the head (walleye head w eye sockets), mylar tensil on hook shank so it sticks out past buck tail, buck tail on shank up to the head, pearl crystal flash outside of buck tail, start wooly bugger chenille, tie little tuft of calf hair about 1/8" down from head, then wrap chenille ensuring the calf hair gets pushed toward the tail and finish. My favorite color pattern in popsicle, using chart bucktail, purple chenille, and pink kip tail. I use the vinyl stick on eyes with a liberal drop of cement to secure. I'll have to try this tie too. I like the feathers. I'm a bit too "hulk smash" for that tiny thread though.

I have some red kiptail that I can substitute for the pink and I have a walleye head mold without eyes and a ball collar. I am going to tie that, thank you!!!!
What's your contact info? I can pour some plain lead heads if you want some with the eye socket. I use the lil nasty hooks on those. I just picked up the new manic mullet mold for saltwater heads as well. Funny, I actually watched the other video you mentioned after I left my comment.
Hey Smalljaw. You never cease to amaze me. This is really a nice looking little jig. I was wondering if you could give me the jig mold item number. I have been trying to pick out a ball head mold and I can’t seem to see one that is similar to what you have. I have been tying some of your patterns on bare hooks and using them on a drop shot rig with some good success and this seems like a perfect jig for such an application. I have never really fished with a float but I will definitely give it a try. Our waters are loaded with sediment and I have to keep my baits of the bottom and a float sounds perfect. Hey again Smalljaw. Just got in some ‘UV Blast’ powder coat. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this stuff and if you could give me some scenario on when you would use it. Do you think I should put it on all my jigs. I painted some jigs last night and when I baked them I had several heads that dripped. I am considering a fluid bed but I am learning toward getting an air gun and spray painting my jigs like you do. When spraying the jigs does the air pressure from the compressor loosen the paint like a fluid bed or would you recommend still using a fluid bed to stir the paint. Thanks again!!!
@@smalljaw you're welcome. I've been tying jigs and flies for quite a while, mainly for walleye, but bass, pan fish, pike, sheepshead, carp, trout, etc all eat jigs. I really like this Fire Minnow, it's open to a lot variations in color and materials.
Your skills have me mesmerized... Do you eventually have these all memorized? How often and what level experience do you start inventing a Crappie jigs?
I have jigs I use a lot memorized. I've been tying for 20+ years so I've tied quite a few jigs and some I have forgot about. Once you can tie a basic jig you can conjure up your own creations. The more materials you learn to work with the more unique you can make your lure. My goal is to use something that nobody else is but still appeals to the fish, some work, some don't. Every jig I post is a proven fish catcher, so learn to tie the basic jig and go from there, good luck!!
It's been 2 months since I first watched this video. My original question is beginning to be answered because I'm finding myself trying different methods of tying a jig I've combined a marabou with craft fur, creating a quasi-clouser or streamer like jig on a #2 sickle hook, 1/8 oz Sausage head jig. And then I gave all six away to 3 of my workmates. I told them to test them out and let me know how they did.

What size jigs do you generally make as the most effective for Crappie. I have relied on 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 but I am wondering about using these hand tied vs the soft plastic I've always used, will a 1/4 be still too big?
I think 1/4 is a little on the large size for this type of jig. I like 1/32oz, 1/16oz, 3/32, and 1/8oz most of the time. I know some say I use hooks that are larger than other crappie jigs but I don't have an issue. I like the size #2 hook as crappie have no problem and it eliminates the small bluegill that often hit the jigs too. I do use a #4 for a lot of my crappie jigs as well and occasionally a #6 but I do like a #2 the best.
Thanks Rick!!! I don't know if it would or not. To be honest, when you troll for crappie it is usually done with a small crankbait, I never saw anyone trolling with a hand tied jig.

Here in Florida a lot of the crappie fishermen do trolling.

When I cut hair or man made materials I use siszors called
Dr. Slick 5" Synthetics fly tying Scissors
I use the 3.5" Dr. Slick hair scissors, they are easier for me to use.

You could use dubbing but it will be a different jig, this one needs the chenille body.
