Thank you for your video. My opening is about 28" since we are putting the microwave where the double oven used to be. Bought a new LG oven and LG microwave to go on top, so those trim pieces are too short. Might have to get a carpenter to modify the cabinet.
Thank you so much because I was breaking my head trying to figure out how to unmount my microwave. Your video was extremely helpful. At the end I was laughing and thought to myself imagine I do all of that and once it’s done realized I forgot to connect the cord 🤦🏽♀️😂😂😂😂
this video helped a lot. gonna see if I can do this as i couldn't fit it just right on the shelf when I replaced the prior microwave and trim kit. LG's instructions are super damn vague and no-frill lol. I will see if the door kicks into the bottom portion of the facade this time.
thank you. I will give you a heads up. I am probably going to get a new board that raises it slightly, so the door doesn't kick into the lower inside part of the bevel facade. @@ThatDadMike
In the instructions it says to check the level of the microwave before installing the brackets and add shims under the bottom duct as necessary. Was your microwave already level before installing the brackets?
Thanks for the video. I’m trying to determine if my vertical cutout at 16 3/16” is going to work. I see the manual states a minimum of 16 3/4”. Do you know how much vertical height you had in your cabinet cutout? I may need to notch out some additional height for the duct on top.
Hi there! Unfortunately I don't recall the amount of vertical space but what I do remember is that the chrome trim had a lip that sat inside the cabinet top and bottom. I bet that's why they are stating 16 3/16".
Thank you for all your help and helpful video. Quick followup…I installed the LG microwave (similar model but newer MSER2090S) with the same trim kit you had and had about 1/8” to 1/4” to spare above the duct on top. Fortunately I didn’t have to notch out the additional height. So 16 3/16” was just enough height.
Is there any way around installing this in a cabinet without the outer trim? I just need to secure it but the outer trim willl make it too wide since the oven below it is not as wide.
The trim kit came with a base for the microwave that you install in the cabinet - you could certainly leave the trim piece off but the cost of the trim kit was as much as the microwave. Since the microwave is a tabletop version, perhaps just set the microwave into the cabinet without anything and see if that would work for what you are trying to do.
Was the three-hole lip that was part of the bottom duct attached to the microwave FLUSH against cabinet or was there a gap? Trying to determine if my stopper is not far enough back. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! You did not go into any detail on attaching the braces around the microwave before sliding it into the space. Was that because the instructions clearly layout how to attach that? Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to comment! The braces were very well depicted in the instructions however in hindsight I should have done a better job of talking through it. Believe it or not this was the very first video I had ever made and I have definitely learned a lot since then 🙂
Mike, It seems so odd that the trim piece has no grill/venting slats. My old GE unit trim did. Looking around it appears most of the brands no longer have a grill on the trim piece. Do you feel the microwave gets adequate airflow without the vents on the trim?
Thanks for watching the video! The trim piece has ventilation slots along all four sides that are hard to see until installed against the flat cabinet that provide enough airflow. Direct message me and I can send you a few pictures if it would be helpful (unfortunately I am unable to attach them here).
Happy to help! The bracket had corresponding holes in it that matched the holes in the bottom of the microwave and screws came with the kit. It was much easier than I had originally thought once I had everything laid out. The base then has a tab that slides into the small bracket that you see me install in the cabinet so it all lines up correctly.
Nice video! my cabinet opening is 16 3/4" high and width is 28.5", the instructions say cabinet must be 25.5" wide, but im not sure if that is a minimum measurement or it has to be exactly that? how wide is your cabinet if you remember? thank you! I think I can tell from the tape measure it's 25
Thank you! I just measured and the microwave opening in the trim kit is about 25" wide. If I remember correctly, slightly wider was ok as long as the trim kit would cover the opening on all sides. I think they gave you the 25.5 measurement because the lip that sits inside the cabinet is likely that wide.
So a countertop microwave will work as long as it has the trim kit for it? Never had a house with an above the oven microwave, but we’re about to buy a house with one. The microwave does not work. Your video really give me some insight. Just need to know if a countertop microwave will work. Thanks
Yep, it should work fine as long as there is a kit for it. The easiest way I found to figure out which one word work best is to find a trim kit that you like and buy the microwave that corresponds to it.
So the trim kit comes with the mounting pieces and base plates (not sure what they're called)? Trying to modified a previous Wolf trim kit with parts as the LG is slighting top short., Willing to buy this kit if it works! Better than forking out $1000 for a black plastic wolf microwave. ;-)
Wow, $1000 for a plastic kit, that's terrible! This kit came with the base that sits under the microwave, the vent duct that is attached on the side of the microwave and the trim ring.
@@ThatDadMike Sorry I mean the microwave itself is about $1000. I think trim kits are a few hundred bucks. Decided to get an LG and order a trim kit online. Stores don't seem to carry them.
Wow that's still expensive for a microwave! I noticed that as well - it was hard to find the trim kit for a number of models and I think I just got lucky finding the one for the LG.
Thanks for the great video, Mike. My cabinet opening is exactly 25", so I'm trying to gauge if I'll need to notch another .25" off each side before I buy this microwave and trim kit. Do you recall how wide your cabinet opening is? I can't quite tell from your video how wide that side vent is. It looks like I'll have ~.6" on the sides without widening my opening.
Thanks for the kind words! I just measured mine (without removing the trim) and it looks to be close to 25" (the opening in the trim kit for the microwave is 24.5"). If memory serves, I had only a small amount of space on either side. It sounds like you will be ok and not need to notch anything. Here is a copy of the install manual I found online: manualzz.com/doc/53167943/lg-electronics-mk2030nst-trim-kit-for-countertop-microwav...
Just found a copy of the manual online. manualzz.com/doc/53167943/lg-electronics-mk2030nst-trim-kit-for-countertop-microwav... it does say 25.5" width but worth a shot to check before you notch the cabinet.
@@ThatDadMike Just wanted to come back and saw everything worked out well with my install! Thanks again for the video! I didn’t have to notch the cabinet, but I did attach a piece of plywood to the bottom of the cabinet to raise the microwave/vent up half an inch, since the cut out in our cabinet was a little bit too high.
The microwave has a vent that is channeled by the metal duct you see being installed on the side that causes it to vent out of the front of the trim piece
On the old trim, there were 2 screws on the top and 2 on the bottom that were in between the vent slats. The new trim has 2 in the top and 2 on the bottom inside the microwave door.
Hi Mike, great video! Where did you get the base bracket from for this LG? Can you provide a model / item number. My old microwave's brackets do not fit my new LG microwave base brackets. Without it, the microwave sits too low for the trim and just slides around the built in cabinet. Thanks
Thanks for taking the time to comment! I had a similar problem and ended up having to buy the complete trim kit. I found one at Best Buy as an open box and saved a significant amount of money. Looking at a few different websites, it looks like you will need to find a 24 inch trim kit to get the size that you need. The trim kit I installed in the video is for a 30 inch cabinet - here is the link: www.lg.com/us/kitchen-accessories/lg-MK2030NST-microwave-trim-kit

Can you confirm the actual size of your cabinet cutout, and the overall height of the trim kit, please? Hoping the spec sheet is off - but that’s not likely. It’s ridiculous how there aren’t at least a few standard options for standard cutout sizes. My previous unit was a GE Profile convection with a trim kit... It’s blows my mind that your microwave went out in the morning - and you found one that worked, and the coordinating trim kit... in stock - all in one day.
@NK Bromaj, I just measured the dimensions and the overall dimensions they are stating are outer edge to outer edge of the trim kit that sits outside the cabinet. The inner lip that sits inside the cabinet is ~24 5/8 wide x 12 7/8 high. My cabinet is a standard 32" wide cabinet. I did get very lucky finding the kit but it did take some time to research. What worked best in my case was searching for trim kits for a 32" wide cabinet, and then buying the corresponding microwave. Luckily we have a number of Best Buy stores within 50 miles and when I searched their website, on the right hand side I found one marked "open box" locally so I knew it was in stock.
