I will most certainly be back, the only question now is when. Happy Trails! 🙂👍
oh wow, I spent two weeks at Dixie working as an EMT on the Gospel Hump Wilderness fire. Got to see some of this by air and also hiking. Wondering if that burned timber at the beginning is from that fire.
That's a good question! There is one thing that I am sure of though, and that there is no shortage of burn scars in this area. Thank you for your service!
As do I. It could've been ignored and erased but it was the first thing I saw when I woke up and it just rubbed me the wrong way. Thanks David! Is your bike tagged/ street legal? If so, Grangeville and or Riggins could be additional stops for you to take on fuel. You could also go another 20ish miles out of route to McCall from Burgdorf and then come back if you wanted to cross Elk Summit or just cut across from McCall to Yellow Pine via Lick Creek Pass. It's a beautiful route as well. We took it back in 2018 because Elk Summit was still snowed in.

Have you ever thought of doing a video of the trailers you build? Would like to build something similar for the sxs and any ideas would be helpful. Thanks
I have, just haven't found the time yet . My advice on the trailers is keep it light. Just because you can pull bigger or heavier doesn't necessarily mean that you should. Use a good suspension and have a blast using it, I know we do. Happy Trails!

Thank you Devin! I don't have the route info handy at the moment but I included the route names in the video. This web site should help with locating. trails.idaho.gov/ I also use the MVUMs for the Forest Service.
ATV Trail Scouts, it took a lot of time and a lot of attention to detail but I was finally able to get everything mapped out! I’m pretty sure I make up about half of your views at this point hahaha now that it’s mapped out our next dilemma is figuring out the fuel stops. Would you happen to have the list of cities where you stopped for fuel? Thanks again for sharing the video!
ATV Trail Scouts, after about 5 or 6 hours of research I was finally able to find fuel stops. But I have another question for you that hopefully you can answer off the top of your head. On average how many hours of actual ride time per day did you guys put on the machines? We might have to shorten the trip by a day, possibly even 2, do you think that would be possible?
Ezra Scott here long time no talk but anyway what month did you take this trip. We are going to plan a trip in memory of Big Brian Thompson our friend who we miss dearly
Hey Ezra! We did this trip the first and second week of July. You have to watch getting to Pinion Peak too early as it will most likely still be blocked by snow as evident at 28:49 of the video. It's frowned upon if you try to navigate around it like we did. We were extremely careful but not everyone is which is why they don't like for you to do it. I found out after the fact. August is definitely a safer bet but then you are in wildfire season and it's a crap shoot whether or not something will be closed due to fire.
That was totally awesome thank you so much I have been from Sea foam to Piñon Peak to Yankee fork I would love to do that whole trip I will have to go back and study this do you do a yearly trip?
Thank you Alan! I have been doing trips with the atvs, west of the Rockies for about 13 years now. I do different types of trips, like 1 year I'll load up the duffel bags and strap them to the atv and stay in different motels, B&Bs etc. Sometimes we'll take the travel trailer and just base out of one location for a week or so and then there's my favorite way of all. Load up the atv and trailer and set out for 8-10 days before loading up and heading back home. This year made the 3rd year in a row that we went Idaho. This trip in particular was great and we enjoyed it very much! The scenery out there is absolutely beautiful!
I'm not sure that I do because I lost alot when I swapped computers. I'll have to get on there and dig around for it and see what I can find. Shoot me an email and I'll let you know what I find. ceg043@hotmail.com
@@atvtrailscouts4765 OK. Thanks for replying. I travel with paper maps and no devices. The Rand McNallys aren't the worst maps out there but I'd like something with more detail- tracks and trails.
Hey Michael, I will try to do a more detailed video of this in the future, but for now, I make sure I have planned my food stops and make sure there is enough for 4-5 days extra. I mostly rely on the dehydrated packs for this. They are light weight and easy to pack. Water, water, water! A filtration device helps if you are unable to resupply at a store. Plan for the unplanned when it comes to fuel. I figure my stops and distance and generally add 20% for unforeseen detours. Pack parts if riding. I carry spare tierods, sensors, etc. Hopefully, if there is a failure, I can get her back up and running. I do all of the work myself on my machine and like to think I have a chance of a successful trailside repair if necessary. I also bring plenty of tools. In the case of larger parties like the one on this trip, we put the list out and different people bring different things from the list. That way we're not all carrying a ton of weight in tools on each machine. A reliable GPS is a must (for me anyway). I follow a predetermined route on the screen so that I don't spend all of my time consulting paper maps. I also bring a backup. In a case that we find private property or for some reason the route is blocked or closed, paper maps do however, help with figuring out a detour, so bring them if possible. I bring a satellite phone and have some sort of plan in place for emergencies. My wife and I have done these alone in the past and brought good hiking boots and a backpack incase the wheeler quits and we had to walk out. Most times we travel with others so that shouldn't be an issue. Flashlights, fire starter, camera, sd cards, etc are other must haves! Do a local trip to where you live and spend a night or two out. That will let you fine tune the list of items that you require. Happy Trails!
Yes sir! Me and a friend made all but the one that said "Happy Campers" on it. Keith built his out of his shop right before the trip. I've been fooling around with those for about 8 years now. The one I'm pulling has over 3000 miles on it. There's not enough room on my machine for both mine and my wife's stuff for a multi day adventure so the trailer was the solution. It's just got more and more complex over the years. I started with the one Jeremy's pulling, moved to the one James had and then added the tent, awning, lights etc as I did these trips and realized the benefits to having all of the extras. They make fun of me now and say I go "glamping". 😁 The trailer Ethan was pulling is a compact one man rig that we were basically beating on a little just to see how it held up.
Do you have an itinerary by chance? I would love to do this trip. I wrote down as much info as I could but I'm not familiar with the area. I appreciate the help
Hey Mark! All I have as of now is what's on the video. I could go back and see if I could find all of the details but it would take some time and I am extremely busy with work and another project right now. The trip took quite a while to plan but the Idaho trails website was a huge help. It will help with following the route I took as well. I hope you get the chance to do it. Well worth the time it takes to plan it out!!! Happy Trails!
Hey Mike, the weight is usually right around 650lbs, depending on how much water and fuel i'm hauling. That of course depends on how far we have to travel between towns that we can restock in. My son is pulling the one man set up with the smaller tent and his is approx. 150 lbs lighter. The towing capacity on mine is 1300 lbs and I try very hard to keep it at half that or less.
@@atvtrailscouts4765 thanks for getting back to me I am building a overlanding trailer for my canam commander and the weight is a concern for me as to how the belt will hold up when pulling many miles in a day, does the machine have any issues pulling in high gear
@@rcmikeklein5512 I have logged a little over 4000 miles so far pulling a trailer and so far (I almost hate to say anything) I have had zero issues with the machine. On our last trip to Idaho I turned over 10600 miles on it. Weight is a very real concern when building and loading. I had a friend find out how hard it is on the his clutch by pulling heavy. If I could give you a tip, resist the urge to take everything and the kitchen sink with you. If you have the room, it doesn't necessarily mean you should use it all. I try to pack as light as I can and take compact camping gear.As far as the belt goes, I run a Gates Carbon Fiber and it has around 2300 miles on it so far, and about 95% of that is pulling a trailer. It still has no slippage whatsoever.
@@atvtrailscouts4765 your experience is very encouraging, I really want to do exactly what you're doing so thanks so much and I will press on with my build.
What would you say the average cost for a person with an ATV would be for a week long, on this trip? Also is there ways to refill your gas along the way?
There are so many variables its hard to tell. If you camp out every night it won't cost you much at all. If you stay out of the restaurants as you pass through the towns you'll save even more. For me, part of the fun is experiencing all of it so we stay in motels or B&Bs every other night or two and eat at the little mom and pop places when possible. If you don't buy souvenirs it will also save alot of money. Where you have to drive from determines how much the trip will cost too. I have to buy approximately 370 gallons of diesel just to get there and back and then gas for 2 machines. It cost us a pretty penny emery time we go but to me its worth every cent. As far as gas goes, there are gas stations along this route. Hope this helps a little.
Hello! They are built by me and a friend. We do build for other people. If you're wanting any more info on them shoot me an email and I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have. ceg043@hotmail.com Thank you!
I would just have to let you know when we head that way again. We were planning another trip to Idahoq this summer but am unsure right now if it's going to pan out or not. Everyone is being pulled in different directions right now. What do you ride and what kind of set up do you have? Not that you need a certain type. Shoot, you could throw a tent on a dirt bike and be ready to go. Just curious what you use.
ATV Trail Scouts sorry “ ATV “ for being nosy . But you gotta love ... Hillrod films . Haven’t watch this channel yet myself but he gets right to the point I like that in this guy so far . Your channel is something to say for itself . Thanks for being out there from Michigan !

You can find this page on Facebook (just send a request to join) or shoot me your contact info to ceg043@hotmail.com and I can fill you in on future rides and all costs associated with the ride. Thank you
Thank you Brian! We went the second week of July. Idaho is a tricky place to plan a long trip like this, atleast for those like myself, driving 2200 miles to get out there. Too early and your dealing with snow drifts and possibly closed routes and too late you're dealing with fire season. We have to commit because of time to get out there, and length of trip. Its hard for us to hit it just right.
Its of all of Idaho but it's from the Nat Geo computer software which has been discontinued. You should be able to find plenty of maps for Idaho though. Also, if you use a GPS, I will sell a full itinerary for $100. The maps will come in gpx format.
There is some narrow stretches that would be tough for a jeep but there are alternate routes nearby. You would also have to go late in the year to make sure the snow drift was completely gone up around Pinion Peak and the only problem with that is it puts you out there during wildfire season.
You'll need atleast 8 days if you're doing the same route because there really isn't any way to shorten this one. Plan for alot of seat time(in front of the computer)planning route, points of interests, fuel stops, food stops and layovers in motels. These trips take me a long time to plan but they generally run pretty smooth once we set out. Once you get out there, take plenty of pics and video. Its worth all of the planning hours once you make it out there.
Thanks for showing people Idaho’s beauty. We live in horseshoe bend and think you guys are awesome for sharing this. Have a great day.

You're very fortunate to have a back yard like that! Happy Trails!
I followed you folks through your trip of Nevada a couple of years ago, now I see you came to my area of central Idaho.
Looks like we have eaten the same dirt, (haha).
The road from Elk City to Burgdorf, past the school bus to Yellowpine I know well.

Hey Larry, good to hear from you again! This was our second year riding in Idaho. I love it out there! One of these days I hope to get the other video up from our trip across Idaho riding from north to south. It was another excellent adventure! We actually did it in 2018. I'm glad to hear you are set up to do stuff like this. It seems like such a shame for those that live 2000 miles closer than I do to miss out on such epic riding opportunities.
Love your trailers. Can I buy one somewhere?
Thanks bud. Shoot me an email and let me know what all you are looking for.

I'm curious as to a pack list of what items you find necessary to take on a trip like this.
@@atvtrailscouts4765 Thank you.
You're most certainly welcome!
@@atvtrailscouts4765 Did you guys make those trailers?
Do you happen to have any GPS coordinates for this ride OR paper maps for sale ??.

Awesome video! I love all the rigs. Do any of the trailers have suspension?
Sean
Thank you! They all have suspension. They use either torsion style or Timbrens.
Thanks for the info
how much do you think the trailer, pulled by the atv, with the roof top tent weight is when fully loaded?
@@rcmikeklein5512 Good luck with the build and Happy Trails!
Where would a guy from Michigan get trail info for this trip??
A whole lot of surfing on the web and studying the Forest Service websites MVUM maps. It takes alot of time but its doable.

Everyone is being pulled in different directions right now. What do you ride and what kind of set up do you have? Not that you need a certain type. Shoot, you could throw a tent on a dirt bike and be ready to go. Just curious what you use.

You would be correct and yes, they were tagged.
I sure would like to take a trip like this, how do you advertise?

You can find this page on Facebook (just send a request to join) or shoot me your contact info to ceg043@hotmail.com and I can fill you in on future rides and all costs associated with the ride. Awesome video of your trip. What time of year was this?
Thank you Brian! We went the second week of July. Idaho is a tricky place to plan a long trip like this, atleast for those like myself, driving 2200 miles to get out there. Too early and your dealing with snow drifts and possibly closed routes and too late you're dealing with fire season. We have to commit because of time to get out there, and length of trip. Its hard for us to hit it just right.
Newbie here - is that a topographical map of all Idaho or just the Frank Church Wilderness? Where can I purchase?
Its of all of Idaho but it's from the Nat Geo computer software which has been discontinued. You should be able to find plenty of maps for Idaho though. Also, if you use a GPS, I will sell a full itinerary for $100. The maps will come in gpx format.
How long is the Long trailer used for all the atvs and trailers pulled by the white dully?
It is 35 feet long.
So when’s the new one coming out? Thanks for the invitation. (That you never let me know about) witch is fine got my own trip planned next year.
Sorry Tim, 15 people was enough. Working on the new one now. Not sure when I'll be done though. Too many other distractions here lately.
Are jeeps allowed on all the trails you drove? Just asking we have a sxs and our son has a jeep.
There is some narrow stretches that would be tough for a jeep but there are alternate routes nearby. You would also have to go late in the year to make sure the snow drift was completely gone up around Pinion Peak and the only problem with that is it puts you out there during wildfire season.
what brand trailer is it
It's a homemade job. Me and a friend build them.
Am thinking about taking this trip, what, how, where do I begin?
You'll need atleast 8 days if you're doing the same route because there really isn't any way to shorten this one. Plan for alot of seat time(in front of the computer)planning route, points of interests, fuel stops, food stops and layovers in motels. These trips take me a long time to plan but they generally run pretty smooth once we set out. Once you get out there, take plenty of pics and video. Its worth all of the planning hours once you make it out there.
@@atvtrailscouts4765 Any chance you wrote your trip details down is there. Are you from Idaho?
