  • Welp, we decided to buy the Yakima 4-Bike Carrier Full Swing bike Rack. We were using this to carry 2 Trek Roscoes and 2 Trek Kids Bikes. Unfortunately, this bike rack does not fit or carry 4 bikes as advertised, safely (at least in our setup of bikes and our experience).
We did get 4 bikes to fit, but they ended up scratching each other. Additionally, the flex of the bike rack was so bad it was dangerous to use thinking it might break at any point.

Great video! I just got the Allen Sports one and only realized this when trying to load the MTBs. I ended up loading them all in the same direction (instead of alternating as instructed in the manual), turning the handle bars a bit (like 45 degrees), or letting handle bars rest on each other. I needed to add padding here and there so that derailleurs don't touch the disc brake rotors etc.
I thought about adaptor bars. Maybe I'm too paranoid but I feel there's a slight risk of seat post gradually coming off during long bumpy trips. Plus the connection is not tightened so the bike would go up and down on bumps.

Have you tried using a Yakima TopTube on the bike with the unconventional frame?

What about using a tube adapter bar?

I have the same one, and found that if you put the top tube on one bar lock and use the bottom tube on the other frame lock. It will also allow the front wheel to clear the ground better.

@4:20 you point out a nipple that should be slid into the receiver yet it isn't when you demonstrate the bouncing action of the rack with your hand. The expanding wedge will probably only work if it's first locked into the receiver. I think ALL hanging racks will need top tube adaptor for most modern MT bikes to fit all 4 bikes. Definitely will scratch up the frame no matter how much 'sway' protection is added. I've used reusable zip ties with pieces of pipe insulation to reduce frame-frame contact.

They sell a tube adapter for bikes without a top cross bar.

Never getting 4 bikes on one of these. Misleading to say the least.

The innermost mounting position should be reversed, so the innermost bike has the drivetrain side away from a second bike. I just bought a used hanging rack because it was cheap and I rarely carry more than one bike. These racks are of a different era (at least for Mountain bikes) and a platform seems to be the only way to go these days.

Use a top tube adapter bud. Nice review otherwise.

How much did Yakima pay you to do this review? You're working for them. Admit it.

Yes, they paid me to talk about how much it sucks, makes sense.
