My Yard Sale DISASTER | Get Rid of Everything | Hoarding Recovery

- This yard sale was by far the most emotional roller coaster I ever had! It started off great, pulling all the bins up, clearing out a section in the basement and laying it out! The weekend was forecasted for sun and for it to be dry! But it ended up raining overnight and ruining a lot of things! This is the first time in awhile that I had a panic attack over my hoarding disorder in a very long time! And this video I talk about how I navigated through those emotions to self soothe my nervous system and in the end, have a good positive yard sale!

Although the rain made it FEEL like a disaster, in REALITY 14 empty bins is a huge success! I am so proud of you 😊
The most important thing is you feel comfortable because that's how you'll keep going 🎉
Absolutely my friend 🩷🙏🏼🩷🦄
So sorry it rained! Amazing idea to donate the money to the food banks!
I would either keep everything set up in the garage (which motivates you to clean that space up) and then move it outside in the AM or have enough tarps to bungee cord down over the tables.
I love that you donate the money to a good cause. Since you don't keep the money wondering if it makes more sense to donate everything as you find it to a good cause that gives it away free instead of holding onto everything in your basement. Would work out to the same amount of good while freeing up your basement in the future.
It does make sense as far as it’s A LOT less work!! lol!!! But for myself, it’s more meaningful talking to the people at the yard sale, they tell that their kids, grandkids are going to play with the toys, etc. It brings me that emotional closure I need. I also love food shopping and talking to the food pantry and talking to their volunteers!! Until I find a charity where I can be more hands on rather than dropping off, I’ll prolly have yard sales!!
@@ahoardersheart👏👏👏 You go girl, You know what works for You. To Me that is very important!!!🥰❤️😀
14 bins of stuff out of the house is HUGE! Congrats. For a rough start, it went well.
You are very strong to keep going in the middle of the night. You didnt quit, you washed the clothes and made the best of a really bad situation!! Very very good job!! 💕
All those empty bins and boxes are SO EXCITING!! And congratulations on processing all those emotions and knowing that keeping things for another yard sale is part of the healing process. You are amazing!
It makes total sense to me that what soothes you a lot is knowing that the items you are letting go are going to be made use off.
You want them to have their value recognised.... ❤
❤ You did awesome! I'm glad you're going to have another sale. For the next one I think you should sell some of your totes since you won't be needing all of them anymore.❤
Despite all the excitement with the rain you still managed to eliminate fourteen boxes and bins! Well done.
Hi Mel, this was difficult because you are such a lovely person, who loves doing stuff for others, and it wasn't fair. But you are strong, you pushed through and you stayed up probably half a night washing and drying the clothes. You did great, 14 boxes is fantastic!
Mel I wanted to say this for a while. I went through some tuff times and my flat ended up very cluttered few years ago. I found you by searching TH-cam and watched every single decluttering video you ever made. I credit you fully for helping me learn how to declutter, learn how to deal with my related emotions, and thanks to you, i am now 4000 items lighter (yep I counted) and i feel so much better!
You are such a generous and lovely person and i thank you for being there for me, and millions of others of us across the world who need some help and don't know where to turn. Thank you for being so brave and opening your doors and taking us on your journey. You helped me regain control and take the clutter burden off. Thank you.
Lots of love from UK to you and your supervisor Pepper😺
You did well.....14 boxes and bins is a lot! Your goal was to get stuff gone to help others and you did exactly that.
Yes amazing totally agree!!! Glad it still turned out good even with the disaster. ❤ Making peace with it is important!
No disaster..a definite WIN for you! Stay strong and positive. Hugs 🫂
I love how you described how you talked yourself down from the rising panic❤
Congratulation Ms. Heart on your yard sale and your continuing growth and recovery. You may want to talk with the food bank that you are donating to first before buying food. Food banks often prefer to receive money because they can buy food at a big discount. So that $156 that you use at a grocery store can go two to three times as far if the food bank buys the food directly. That's how it works with my local food bank. Awesome that you donate your profits to the needy 🥰
I completely understand the need to keep that stuff for the next yard sale. Your nervous system has already had a shock with the rain. I'm impressed you still managed to let go of so much stuff & you're being kind to yourself.
You're doing a brilliant job. ❤️
Maybe set up the tables in the garage so you can just pull the tables out in the morning. You can keep the clothes in bins and lay them out as there is time.
I would LOVE to do that…we just need to clean that garage, maybe this fall well get in there 😉🦄🌟🙏🏼💜
She has no space in the garage
Perfect moment to plan for the next yard sale! Maybe use the light green bins just for yard sale from now on? 💚Maybe give them a designated corner in the basement just like the Christmas cave? That way you don’t have to go through them again and again each time it’s time for another yard sale 😊
I had a yard sale that got rained on once but luckily I covered everything with lots of tarps which were secured by rocks and bricks on the corners. No damage. You live & you learn❣️❣️❤️❤️
I love how you turn difficult activities into something positive.
I am so excited that something so challenging was turned into a successful event! God is good and He took care of you.
I think having the yard sale bins not return to the basement makes sense and for now having it outside is fine, but I have a dream that someday you could have a staging space in the garage for your yard sale bins to be staged. And I think it is fine having some stuff go from one sale to the next. ♡♡♡
I had a property broken into that stored a lot of mine and my family’s personal belongings. A lot was stolen, including personal documents in a safe. Insurance covered all of it, but it definitely made me have a panic attack. Plus side is it did trigger my journey to minimize my life! I was a hoarder too and now I’m getting it controlled. I’ve downsized from 4 houses where I kept my stuff to now only 2, and that has been huge progress! You got this❤
Sorry about the rain, but you still emptied 14 bins! That is fantastic. Keep it up.❤❤❤
Great Job despite all odds!
You should also Sell some of the Empty Storage Tubs! I Know you Already have some in the basement, you dont need Most of them Because stuff will get even less over Time ! Bulky empty bins can also be Clutter 😊😁
You’re such a genuinely good hearted person!
Thank you so much my friend, that means the world to me 🩷🙏🏼🩷🦄🌟
@@ahoardersheart you really are! Well done for taking a lesson from this too. I know it’s not easy but shows just how far you’ve come in your recovery! I know I speak for everyone when I say we are very proud of you!
WE ARE WITH YOU IN THIS JOURNEY SO DONT U GET UPSET ABOUT THE RAIN. U R THE BEST.
I agree with you doing another yard sale . I think it’s a wonderful way to recover. Great job !!
As long as Miss Pepper approves you know it’s a success 😂
LOL!! Yes, Miss Pepper gave me the thumbs up!!! 😻❤️🌟
I've seen the title and was like: "What...?! NO!!!" And now I am watching the video and hope for something positive.
I loved this video for so many reasons, 1st the way you dealt with the situation really shows how far along you've come in your journey, 2nd happy to see that you could make people happy and 3rd yea, keep going! Excited to see some decluttering and then another yard sale soon. Be blessed, we are all very proud of you! ❤
Thank you so much my friend, you’re sweet encouraging message fuels my heart to keep going 🦄💜🌟🙏🏼🩷
Mrs Heart, I’m so sorry your yard sale didn’t go quite according to plan. It must have made you feel so deflated after you saw the effects of the rain. However, you persevered and didn’t give up. As a result you still achieved your goal of decluttering and raised some money for the food bank in the process. I am so pleased for you, because you showed real strength of will.
I think maybe having one last yard sale this year will be good for you, as it will help you to get some closure and re-balance your nervous system; and replacing this memory with an even more positive one.
Also, Mrs Heart, I completely get why you didn’t want to take the rest of the things straight to goodwill, because you must have been so exhausted after all that effort.
I think it is a good move to keep the totes that are left out of the house, to reinforce that they have been decluttered. Just make sure they are covered well with tarps just to ensure they stay dry. Wishing you good luck for the next yard sale. Take care. 🤗
Thank you for always sharing your heart. You let us know how hard it was when items were destroyed and yet you carried on. As others have said, Great Job! Fourteen empty containers is huge!
I’m sure your next sale will be more fun, a good reason to keep some things back. You can replace the memory of a disastrous sale with the fun more successful one. I am also impressed with how generous you are. ❤
You did great! You don't have to explain yourself for keeping stuff. It just means more money for the food bank !
You are such an inspiration and shinning light in this world. You are a beautiful person with a beautiful heart!
So sorry you had such a struggle - SO impressed that you found a way to work through it! 👏👏👏 If having yard sales helps you let things go, keep having them! The rain may have been God’s way of showing you you’re strong enough to throw some things away if you need to. Or, someone else may have desperately needed rain. Good luck with the next yard sale!
You did so great in every regard! Your attitude is truly admirable and your transparency makes you even more beautiful inside and out.
Much love and a big hug from Germany.
Thank you so so much my friend from beautiful Germany 🇩🇪❤️ You made my heart so incredibly happy 🙏🏼🦄💜🌟🩷
On the next one, if you tarp, put a spring clamp on each corner holding the tarp tight so at least it doesn't blow.
I'd be really upset too.
I really want to see those cardboard boxes in the recycling!
Hello from Germany, hi Miss Heart and miouw pepper. In the end you make it,good to see you donate the money(food), for the foodbank❤❤❤❤ you are good Heart ❤❤❤❤❤
Aw, I'm sorry it didn't go as planned. You do really look after your items and it's understandable that you were upset to see them ruined. But, overall, you made some good money for the food bank and had a major clear out. You also have managed to regulate your emotions and have come through it. Well done for making the most of it.
Great Job - fourteen bins emptied - six more to go in October :)
Wow. I can feel the emotional roller coaster. I know you get so excited for yard sales and you have tried so hard to watch the weather. I could hear your disappointment and sadness when you explained how it rained, no down poured, TWICE. I’m so glad that you were able to find some joy from it - that you were really helping people find things they will appreciate (since other yard sales have been canceled) and that you are helping more people with the proceeds. I can really understand how precious you would have been so triggered by the loss of stuff that you would have had an anxiety attack. Go you for talking yourself through it so you could still be functional and help people!! Yay!!!! ❤
Ms Heart you truly have a huge generous heart! I'm so glad u r giving yourself what u NEED. That's true self love you have learned. Good job not bringing the containers back in the house. If you need to keep them on the side of the house until the next yard sale then you do what you need! Keep that nervous system nice and calm
What a night you had and you must have been pretty tired the next day. Thank you for sharing this with us. It shows everyone, not only those who are hoarders or those with ADHD, how they are not the only ones who feel alone when rough patches occur, but also how to do the best that you can to make the best of the situation. It certainly is another story for you to add to your public speaking engagements. Applause to you Melanie!
Well done!
Thank you so much my friend 🦄💜
You prevailed Mrs. Heart. The rain was out of your control but you prevailed. I am concerned that rain may get in the yard sale bins with them being outside though, even with a tarp. Tuck them in the garage and have no guilt.
Thank you so much my dear friend!! That is a fear of mine too even though it is doubled wrapped in tarp and strapped down! But you’re right, it’s safer in the garage but that space is filled too. I think Fall is the perfect time to start Decluttering it!!! 🦄💜🌟🙏🏼🩷
@@ahoardersheartGo for it! Fall IS the perfect time to declutter the garage! Would it make sense to make the next yard sale a deadline by which you want to have the garage cleaned out? If you would need help from hubby, could you ask for his time as an early Christmas gift? (Full disclosure - asking my husband to help declutter as a gift has not worked for me!😁)
I do love the idea of decluttering the garage but I also think it would be good for you to have one space entirely done. How is the shed looking? It is the smallest space and I'd love to see it set up with a potting station!
So sorry about the rain. We can't control that. You were able to prevail....🙏💜🙏
I’m sorry you went thru this. I can see it pained you. There’s a big lesson in it. You built this up for months and months and gave yourself emotionally and physically so much work. But as you say, it’s all part of your journey.
You're amazing ❤and should be proud! Cheers from Ontario Canada. ❤🌷🌻
14 bins! Fabulous! You're doing great. You inspire me to keep letting go in small increments. Like you, I find it so much easier to give things away and see the happiness that brings others. My Buy Nothing Facebook Group has been great for this. It feels wonderful when someone posts a "wish" and I have just what they need to give to them! Keep going! ♥
Way to fight through that tough weekend!
I hope you get rid of the colored bins soon and continue to switch to clear bins for your storage!
Your front flowers looks so beautiful!
Thank you so so much!!! They make me so happy 🌷🌻🪻🌸🌼
So sorry that happened to you, Ms. Heart! 😢 I live in Minnesota and the weather is so unpredictable! I would store the remaining bins in the garage so that you can easily add to them without having to go all the way outside. Also, set up your piles inside (either the living room or garage) the night before and move everything out the morning of. That way your time isnt wasted and things can be even more protected. Short term inconvenience for long term gain. Don't be discouraged! You have grown so much!
Thank you so so much my friend 🦄💜🌟🙏🏼🩷 Yes, the weather has been unpredictable!! The garage is filled with stuff and there’s no room to store the bins…yet!!! I think Fall is the perfect time to get in that garage and start clearing it out 🦄💜🌟🙏🏼🩷
Oh no! That must have been so heartbreaking. I am so glad you were able to make the best of it and you even are motivated to do another yard sale. Just saying with the empty bins you might be able to sell some of them.
Well done for rising above the setbacks ❤ xx
Yay for you and the food bank!!
You are brave. You found a good way to handle this difficult situation. Did you know that people with ADHD are actually quiet good in handeling extrem situations. Happy you made the best of it. I think you find the right Solution dealing with all of it. It is the right decision to make a new yard sale with the unsold items.
Good job doll! Sorry about the weather.
Oh boo that stinks that it rained when it wasn't in the forecast. Glad you were still able to have your sale. 😊
Using spring clamps to hold the tarps onto the tables would prevent the wind from blowing the tarps off. People who takes things to sell at flea markets often use them.
I know I shouldn't be recommending a purchase to a recovering hoarder, but Ms. Heart loves doing yard sales and they would help her not feel anxious about this reoccuring.
Wonderful work! I just donated this morning more garden produce to our pantry. Such a good feeling.❤
I'm sorry you had a hard time!
Great job! Keep going!
Awww...I'm so sorry it rained! But way to make lemonade out of lemons! Hooray! I'm excited for your next yard sale!
I was thinking when I read comments on your last video where it was being suggested that you just donate the items rather than have a yard sale and I thought back through this journey and how important it has been to you to KNOW that your items are going to a good home. That they will be used and loved. And I love that you view all the work of the set up of the yard sale as something that you feel lucky to be able to do, rather than something that you HAVE to do. I see how important it is to you to complete the cycle and I’m so SORRY that some items were ruined and had to be thrown away. I don’t have hoarding disorder but I do HATE waste and man, it killed me too to see those things get ruined. Arghhh!! You seem to have a handle on things and have a few more weeks to collect more items to sell. Good luck with everything, you can DO IT!! Thank you for your sharing and transparency ❤
Warning - this won’t be a warm fuzzy comment - 14 bins gone are great, but now the hoard is moving to the side yard? No Mel, This is not good, and if I was your neighbor I would be very upset. It needs to go! I live next to hoarders and if there weren’t visual barriers, I would be calling the county. It’s very inconsiderate to your neighbors and your family who lugs the stuff up from the basement. If selling and community service is what you want to give, there is a better, more effective way- better for you, and better for those you want to help. Moving the hoard for your neighbors to have to look at is not the answer. When I saw the title of your post, I thought that this was the day you had a breakthrough.
I'm so sorry to hear about the rain. Still love to see you having a yard sale.
You bring me all the feelings! I love your videos (and you ironically) -- Keep going!!!! We are here in supporting each other!
Oh, I´m so sorry that it happened, you didn´t need it now! But at the same time I am so happy to see how the new you was able to deal with this, learn and grow more 💜 I understand totally that you took the rest in for the next yardsale.
You handled this so well. Thank you for sharing. You are awesome ❤
Thank you so so much my friend, that means a lot to my heart 🦄💜🌟🙏🏼🩷
Rugs - maybe consider letting go of them - rugs are so much extra work.
Oh no, I am so sorry.
Maybe this is a good motivation to continue the garage declutter. So you can prepare the tables in there 😊
Def ! Donate your empty totes !!!!! You’ll 100% have plenty even after getting them out !
Love being the first arrival
You are the Unicorn of the Day my friend 🦄🌟💜 Thank you!!!
that was very enjoyable miss heart.....
hugs hugs hugs!!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏💗🤗🐈 you got this!
Oftentimes towns put a limit on how many yard sales a household can have in a year. It'd be good to keep an eye on that limit so that you'd never get fined or so that it wouldn't disrupt any of your neighbors due to increased traffic etc. for more that what is allowed.
Think you did Great even tho u got Rain on the yardsale! ❤
Donated some of my yard sale profit to the cat rescue, food pantry and woman’s shelter !
Had a blast doing it ! I will treat myself to a pedicure after my musical Legally Blonde closes :)
Hello this is Stacey Coker from Stafford Virginia thanks for sharing your nice videos 🤩🤩📸📸🆒🆒😎😎🌅🌅🪷🪷🩷🩷💜💜💙💙🩵🩵🌷🌷🦩🦩🪻🪻🧡🧡🍂🍂
Also think of what keeping the boxes in the basement, waiting for a yard sale to spend a lot of time prepping everything and spending time sells and staffing the event, has an effect on you. Is it taxing you having those 10-20 boxes in the basement in a holding pattern? Is it worrying you? I suggest when you make the decision to get rid of it, to get rid of it: donate or throw it away so you can totally complete that task. Decide to let it go: and then actually let it go by bringing it to the donation center.
A lot of people with hoarding disorder overvalue their stuff and price it higher than what it’s worth at a yard sale. Then negotiating hard during a yard sale. Is it worth it? Then what happens with all the stuff that doesn’t sell? The best option would be to bring it all to a donation center. Don’t bring it back in your house to sit in limbo for an unknown period of time. This stress of all the boxes and doing the yard sale and cleaning the clothes, is not necessary. Thinking about your extra yard sale boxes in the basement is something you don’t need in your healing too. I wish you the best and I’m sorry the weather disrupted your sale.
As much as it is easy to comment 'just throw away what's left over', I know I would not do that either, and I am not a hoarder at all, I just would want to give the sale a 2nd or 3rd chance before donating. I completely understand you also enjoy the process of having a 'chunky' yard sale. Emptying so many bins I'd say you're doing great, and everyone has their own way to do it. Maybe once you reach the end of the basement hoard, donate 'the rest' you're left with? But I don't think that time has come yet! Enjoy this process and take all the time you need for it!
ps. I love Pepper
😢❤
❤❤❤
Whatever you didn't sell at one but sold at another well, that would be you had the right person who "neeeeded' the item the second sale. LOL Someone found just what they wanted and it was something left from a previous sale. Maybe the Christmas items will sell closer to Christmas. Sorry you lost some things due to weather. It seems you moved a lot of merchandise though. Hello to Miss. Pepper the helper kitty! I have a silver tabby in my family named Pepper as well.
❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Another yard sale in October !!
It rained take a message from god and donate the ALL items
So sad wet items went into the garbage
❤❤❤😊
Food Pantry prefer if you donate money instead of donating food because they know what they need and they don't get stuck with stuff that they know people won't eat.
How would a Halloween yard sale go? Knowing that Americans love Halloween and trick or treating and most of the area will be out and about visiting houses to request sweet treats, what would happen if you did one on the evening on Halloween - kids get the sweets, adults get to browse a yard sale.
Did you bring up all the yard sale stuff from your basement
🤗👍🏻🫶🏻
Do you think that maybe God used this to show how the material things we place so much importance on can be so temporary and ruined so quickly? It was a reminder for me to place my faith in God and not stuff.
You’ve got such a great attitude! Maybe the rain was God’s way of helping those items leave your house for good. ❤️🩹
Great response! Well done for turning this around! ♥️❤️🩷
I'm glad you decided to get back on the horse. I know how long you've been waiting for that yard sale.
Hopefully one day your garage will be clutter-free so you can set up in there instead!
