It's easy, my friend DR has a prosperity for which it had not prepared itself with infrastructure, you will find the same in Colombian cities like Bogota and Medellin, but DR is working now, they are making more subways to get more vehicles out of the city center, in short, it is also an education problem.

I moved 2 months ago to DR (it’s my native country) and I don’t plan on getting a car. I did a video about transportation options in DR and I talk a lot about the driving and how dangerous it is in DR. Anyhow, it has to do with the lack of accountability that unfortunately is part of our culture. Good job on this video and thanks for bringing it up.

good video for sure. I drive here all the time and I have rules to drive by. 1. DO NOT BE IN A HURRY. Any appointments you make LEAVE EARLY and if you are still late, so be it. 2. Try to time your trips for certain times of day. If you can avoid 6:am to 10:am - 3:pm to 7:pm do so. 3. LIVE with your missed turn offs! , Don't
try to force your way back into traffic if you missed the freeway on ramps or off ramps. EAT your mistake, it may take you anywhere from a few minutes to MUCH longer , but live with it and circle back. 4. If you can avoid it - DONT DRIVE A BUCKET! Breakdowns always happen in the WORST places. 5. practice road courtesy, be a role model. I never use my horn.

You're absolutely right-driving in the Dominican Republic is very dangerous. I live in the U.S. but spend my winters in Santo Domingo, and I've chosen not to own a car because the risks of driving are too high. Instead, I rely on services like Uber or Indrive to get around. Walking, however, can be even more dangerous. There aren't enough crosswalks or traffic lights. For example, the roads leading to MegaCentro, the busiest mall in the country, don't have any designated pedestrian walkways. People have to run across the road and climb over the divider after getting off buses or the Metro just to reach the mall.

    • @Hillsidedojo

I've read in the newspapers more times than I'd like to remember stories of accidents involving large vehicles usually that take the lives of 25 to 35 people at one time! Dead on the side of the road. Many reasons why but its heart rendering and frightening to me. Another thing I don't do in foreign countries is ride moto taxis. I still can’t believe how these mass shootings continue. Almost feels like it’s not going to stop. I graduated from Evander Childs high school in the Bronx. It was considered one of the roughest schools in NYC. It was the early nineties, and we had to go through metal detectors to enter the school but I never once worried about getting shot in school. Jay, I feel you on the air condition. The worst drive of my life was a vacation trip from Dallas to Houston in the middle of summer over 100% heat and the air condition decided to stop working two hours into the four hour trip. It was a mess. Opening windows seemed to make things work. It did not help that my fiancee was from Poland and I felt bad because she sweated profusely. We still got to to the stuff we planned to do like going to the Space center, Galveston, Austin, parks, zoos etc but it ruined the trip a little.
I get your fear about the bad driving also. I think at a base level as human beings we hate the idea that someone else could cause our demise without us doing anything wrong which is why the mass shootings are making folks paranoid in the US. For me and many people not having control over a circumstances causes worry or fear. There was a shooting outside a gym where I go in a very safe neighborhood and i can tell you a few times after that happened it crossed my mind that if some lunatic entered the gym we could be doomed. It sucks to even have those thoughts when all we want is peace of mind when we are exercising.

The same situation is taking place in South Florida. Folks have become animals here as well. When in Dominican Republic get yourself a private driver, taxi driver, Uber, In Drive, train or bus. There are numberous options. Dominican Republic has numerous laws on everythning. However they lack the personnell or resources to inforce anything. I was there on the 30th of August and I got caught twice in a massive traffic jam due to the rain and power outage on most of the traffic lights in Santo Domingo. It was hell on earth. I can say something here, cause I witnessed myself, a big problem....August 2022, me and my wife came to the DR to visit her family there, and we stayed at a Resort in Las Galeras but you know, we had to drive out there from the airport in Santo Domingo...we had a taxi friend of my wife's family that picked us up and drove us out there...my wife son, who is in his early 30s, came out to see us and he had to drive from Santo Domingo to Las Galeras, long drive...he made it, no worries, but we drove around with him in his car to Samana, Las Terrenas etc the whole Samana area....the police were doing stop checks, and my son-in-law was stopped, he got out to talk with the police, then my wife did, I stayed in the car, I was looking in the mirror and I saw him hand the Police some cash, they gave him a ticket, and they got in the car and we drove off. I was like "wtf just happened", my wife told me her son got a ticket for not driving with a drivers license...and I was like "WHAT"....she said in the DR, its not obligatory to have a drivers license. So, long story short...If they made it mandatory, and go through drivers school, and pass a drivers test, to get a drivers license, I'm positive that will improve that situation. Crazy

I f you're in her country, I think the burden lies on you to learn their language and vice versa. Your situation is not unique as I'm sure you know, and many people have been faced with this and was able to make it happen. To me the most important part is that the lady is genuine and in it for the right reasons. If that's established the rest can be worked out.

Excessive amount of vehicles (cars, and old vehicles), here in DR you have to be driving defensively taking care of you and the other disrespectful driver, not to mention that truck driver are some of those you have to be careful too. I normally drive and see the other drivers a bit lost or seeming like drunk I slow down and let them go or speed to leave behind. In santo domingo, Santiago it's totally crazy when it comes to driving. If I'm going to a river or beach I take my time no matter the time it takes. But government have to do something about it. In radio it a daily topic. Stay blessed

Phoenix, Arizona has experienced 100 consecutive days of temperatures at or above 100°F breaking the previous record of 76 days set in 1993. Also tied the record for most days above 110°F in a year with 55 days. The global sea ice extent was the second smallest in the 46- year record, at 8.32 million square miles, which was 1.5 square miles below the 1991~2020 average. There is a chance that 2024 will rank as the world's warmest year on record. Thank God that we have Constanza (-my town-) and Jarabacoa to cool off. At the end I had to travel to the States because I was unable to afford treatment to fight a bone infection (product of the accident and also product of a very poor healthcare system).
Doctors in Boston saved my legs, and I didn’t pay for a thing. (I’m grateful)
The driver that provoked the accident left the scene, showed up 4 days later, no toxicology tests were done, no consequences at all (because there are no legal consequences for leaving the scene of an accident in the D.R.)

Police should start giving tickets for all driving infractions. Once people see and hear about how easy is to get a ticket for doing the wrong thing, that is not stopping at stoplight, changing lanes without using this turn signal speeding, etc.
If all this becomes normal, it will send a message to the country that you can’t drive like a fool you must follow the rules.
If not, it’s gonna to cost you a lot of money and can eventually cause you to lose
your license, if you get too many tickets.

Very impactful video Jay. Unfortunately, reckless driving is a problem worldwide. Even here in the states, thousands are killed/seriously injured each year on the local streets & highways/expressways due to excessive speed, alcohol/drugs, impatience/inattention. It is the responsibility of both vehicular operators and pedestrians alike to use caution & common sense out there. Unfortunately drivers will continue to speed, use drugs/alcohol and get behind the wheel of a vehicle or operate a vehicle and become distracted by use of a 📱 while driving. Pedestrians, unfortunately, will continue to cross the roadway without 👀 for vehicles or entering the roadway while distracted by a 📲 or 🎧. These accidents, injuries, & deaths can be significantly reduced/prevented by the “CC “ method: Caution & Common Sense. Let’s all drive to stay alive!!!! Don’t operate to incapacitate!!
