The Dominican Republic isn’t as cheap as it was 5-10 years ago, but it still offers a more affordable lifestyle compared to many other countries. However, if you’re looking to live extremely cheaply, the DR might not be the best fit. The local mindset tends to focus on enjoying the present rather than worrying about the future. Ideally, you should have a steady income of at least $2,000 - 2,500 per month (couple) to live comfortably. If that’s not feasible, you might want to consider Thailand as a more budget-friendly option. Note: Budget does not include what’s needed to party every nights.
Thailand isn't much cheaper, you really need the same amount to live right and not pinch pennies. The DR is closer and just as good as Thailand and the Thai visa can be difficult if your bread ain't right.
One thing to note is that most brothas are low budget travelers and don’t necessarily have the strong financial means like other tourists/expats. DR has gotten notably more expensive in the last few yrs, so it’s no surprise that many brothas are packing up and leaving for other countries that are more economical, like perhaps Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, etc.
This was awesome. Love the point about making sure you’re getting perspective from someone in a similar lifestyle. And just go yo the places where the prices are listed. 🔥🔥
I get the same questions all the time. My response is always, “what I like may not be what you like. The only way you’ll truly know is if you make the move.” But I can say that just like in the U.S.A. , with the nightlife type of lifestyle, eventually you get burnt out and you’ll be looking for what’s next. I’m a family man and my wife and I live good
Jay, great topic. I heard recently “everybody is leaving, Florida, Cancun, Brazil “ don’t plan your life by silly comments like this. I plan to retire in DR. Very soon. 😊
That’s the exact point I was trying to make when I commented on your last video. I was saying that since you are married to a Dominican woman who knows the country, and who speaks the language, your experience and transition would be different than someone who decides to live there without that advantage. I thought my perspective on that was accurate, but somehow that comment got deleted. 🤔 As far as the ex-pat leaving D.R., I think he might be exaggerating about the number. Single TH-camrs who live abroad are always on the go exploring new countries and cultures. If I had to guess, I’d say one of the people he is talking about is TaylorMadeDreams, who I follow as well. Early on, he was hyping up D.R. as Paradise, and encouraged people to get their passports and move there. After living there for years, he had a bad experience and bounced to Thailand. That shocked a lot of us, but I understand why he did it. But his lifestyle is totally different from mine, so that wouldn’t necessarily be a deterrent for me moving there. I don’t drink alcohol, or participate in “Pay-For-Play.” The low cost-of-living, the weather, and the majority of the people looking more like me is what would be my reasons.
Many people come and go for many different reasons. You have to choose your own reason why you fell in love with the country and why you chose to stay. Now if you love the country, just make friends everywhere you go and you’re gonna be fine if you choose to leave because you rather go to places that your friends are Then make the choice but always make a choice for yourself.
Once again this is a very interesting topic, the benefits of living in the Dominican Republic, are amazing, a breath of fresh air, natural foods, the countryside, the environment, restaurants, museums, awesome shopping centers, it depends on your, lifestyle, wonderful weather, nice beaches, wonderful workout, facilities, there are so many places, to live here, and very quiet, if you are interested in that kind of life, everyone lives here, or always plan to visit. always plan ahead, and venture out, in all the neighborhoods, and see if this your , destination, however Jay, information, is on point, and direct, and his wife wonderful, just listen to your, heart, and enjoy the experience, energy of this country.
I agree with him. I’m also married to a Dominican girl from over there should be the US with me for three years now and we’re gonna go buy us a vacation home over there in Santo Domingo and as he mention it all depends on your lifestyle how you’re gonna be treated how are you gonna be perceived as well the Dominican republic the best way I can describe it it’s like Miami call 1000 times cheaper weathers beautiful palm trees are beautiful good seafood, fruit, beautiful women, beautiful culture and I can’t rave more about it if you don’t feel comfortable living there at least by vacation home Dominica republic is gorgeous
I believe it's the state of mind you bring with you and the reason you come. Your experience will be the sum of your actions, meaning take actions that produce positive results....Most single guys head to places where it's more touristy and English is spoken more and their experience is different than a dude with a woman living in the city..
Yes he is correct a lot of brothers are leaving the Dominican Republic I've live here for over 10 years and there is a mass exited brother's leaving the DR . There coming for vacation only but not to live anymore. Yes there's a few investors but not like before. The reason I can say this because I'm a realtor. One of the reasons are health care and the infrastructure and the woman as well . There are better and cheaper countries like Thailand the Philippines and Panama and Brazil Columbia. The DR isn't the same anymore. I'm on my last stretch than I'm leaving as well next move is Thailand in 4 yrs. And the bottom of the bottom line is its getting to be expensive.
Hello brother, your comment caught my attention and I want to say this: The infrastructure of the Dominican Republic is just as good as or better than some of the countries you mentioned, and it is still growing. As for security, Brazil is much more dangerous, and so is Colombia, not to mention the poisonous and dangerous animals in Thailand and Brazil. A country is not just about women, but also its culture, food, and how people treat each other. But if you're only going through life looking for the cheapest or easiest option, I hope things go well for you.
DR will just fine so let them brothers leave. I don't care what they say Thailand and Brazil are not better options and their prices will rise with the influx of the brothers. As far as health care anything major like surgeries etc etc should be done in the US and nothing beats a 4-5 hour flight to see your primary care doctor. Guys have problems with the women there because they try to turn women of night into girlfriends and wives and that's not possible unless you want to set ya wallet on fire and even that won't stop her from being outside.
The biggest reason why brothers are leaving is the gringo taxes. We all know the price is higher for non Dominicans and we okay with paying slightly higher price. But the locals have gotten ridiculous with the price gouging!
@ lol matter fact if you do ask any Dominican that goes to this places that you are mentioning we also get high prices, it’s not about being Gringo it’s about the place, not the person.

As an ex-Floridian; now living in the DR… Florida gators, just don’t go swimming in a lake or river at night, and don’t feed them 😅as far as hurricanes, yeah there are vulnerable to them, but many places are high and dry… it all depends what you are looking for…
I do have a friend who sold out his condo in Punta Cana. His reason Rounding up and deportations of Haitians. What is your take - short term and long term @ these deportations.
My take is, it doesn't have anything to do with what me and my family got going on. Regarding your friend, I've never heard anyone selling their condo, home, land, cars, dog, bicycle, microwave, air fryer, because they were rounding and deporting Mexicans in the US. @@JayAbroad i am staying put-so much invested/married to native. Though not directly impacted. He has his apprehensions and sometimes i wonder if one becomes a statistic due to mistaken identity. Stay blessed.
Hi, Jay. I read a few years ago that more than 40 million people move to a new country every year but a bunch of those people keep rolling trying to find the "perfect place". Unfortunately that dreamed "perfect place" does not exist. Let's take Finland as an example, Finland is considered to be the happiest country; however that conclusion is based on what the people can accomplish materially and all the services that the government offers to them. But sadly the country suffers from isolation amongst neighbors they have one of the highest suicide rate of the world and alcoholism is really notable. They have one of the hardest winters of the Nordic countries. What I'm trying to say is that there is not a perfect place or thing on this planet. The wise thing to do is to learn to prioritize. What do I personally like of this place that other places don't offer. Is this place politically stable? Is it safe for me and my family? Do I see people laughing most of the time? Ect, etc, etc. Sorry, I'm going to have to cut this message due to too many people around me jumping out of joy up and down. Ah, look at this, they are just celebrating the fact that they are Dominican. They do that twice a day; when they get up and just before they go to bed. ¡Ah, Dominicans! The older we get the more we love this country. Jay, is it true that we may have petroleum in Pedernales? God bless the whole planet from the Dominican Republic
Price gouging has gotten out of control. We all know there is a gringo tax on non Dominicans, and we okay with that. But now the locals are going to the extreme with the gringo taxes. No way I should be paying prices I wouldn’t even pay in the States.
Good place for some horrible for others. Same thing in the states with Florida NYC and California. Some leave some stay. I laughed when the media was telling the world Californians are leaving. I lived in San Diego and couldn't find parking anywhere n also rented out my house n had dozens of applicants wanting to live there. It's all entertainment
I would say that the Dominican Republic has gotten more expensive the last few years and i do know people who have left the Dominican Republic for Colombia due to it being cheaper.
I used to go to Dominican Republic in the 80s & 90s. And it was great with $500 Party money you had a great week. But now with the taxes and the service charge that total 28% No thank you... It is no travel zone for me !!

Hey jay, planning on moving there very soon. I’d really appreciate some advice tho my wife is Dominican. I need expat experience.
I’m on Facebook
What type of advice do you need? You can email if you have questions at iamjayabroad@gmail.com. I'm not on Facebook
I’m enjoying living in Santo Domino
I’m not leaving
Unless God say so
Me and you both😅😅
Trying to move to Orlando FL from Europe… but the alligators and storms have me wondering. As an ex-Floridian yourself how much does this impact your life in Florida when you lived there.
good question it's not only crocodiles or storms don't forget tordators season and violence specialists in Caribbean celebrations it's a lot of problems with those people they are violence and start shooting just make sure that you get safe wherever you go
As an ex-Floridian; now living in the DR… Florida gators, just don’t go swimming in a lake or river at night, and don’t feed them 😅as far as hurricanes, yeah there are vulnerable to them, but many places are high and dry… it all depends what you are looking for…
It didn't have any impact on my decision to move to Florida.
Let me know if you have or he has.
@@JayAbroad i am staying put-so much invested/married to native. Though not directly impacted. He has his apprehensions and sometimes i wonder if one becomes a statistic due to mistaken identity. Stay blessed.
Move over Jay. I am moving there. You will be my vecino in one of those cities.
Fa sho. Let's go!
Thanks for sharing this perspective i agree 👍🏾. As far as the petroleum in Pedernales I'm not sure.
Price gouging has gotten out of control. We all know there is a gringo tax on non Dominicans, and we okay with that. But now the locals are going to the extreme with the gringo taxes. No way I should be paying prices I wouldn’t even pay in the States.
That's interesting. I don't pay gringo tax. If it doesn't have a price on it I don't shop there. Very simple.
😅😅
I would say that the Dominican Republic has gotten more expensive the last few years and i do know people who have left the Dominican Republic for Colombia due to it being cheaper.
Yeah I've heard this actually
What's your definition of expensive? Cause some of these guys are just cheap
@Carlos_vibes67 it is becoming more expensive than in recent years but to me it's still affordable.
@@moneymakingmitch😂😂😂
Yes, Colombia is my second choice in many ways.
I love what you told me about but tell these people we are not racist
I don't believe Dominicans in general are racist.
DR needs better infrastructure and healthcare system
They're making progress. It's not the same DR from 10 years ago. Things like this don't happen overnight.
The country is quickly building the infrastructure. For healthcare, private low cost facilities are everywhere…
I used to go to Dominican Republic in the 80s & 90s. And it was great with $500 Party money you had a great week. But now with the taxes and the service charge that total 28% No thank you... It is no travel zone for me !!
It ain't for everyone that's sure.

Man if I play this on mute I feel like my Dominican uncle bout to give me a talk
😅
Pookie and Ray Ray's are leaving
😅😅
1 person knowing that 5 are leaving is a big ratio
😂😂
I need to find a wife, so what about me ?
It's plenty women here for that.
😅😅😅
They can’t afford it 😂 it’s getting expensive and the new buildings are making everything expensive
That's a reason too😅
Everybody about to leave the USA lol 😅
