I played NWN, I built with NWN, I scripted for modules, I co-ran an 80-player server and DM'd for all of them, and my kids grew up learning to read from NWN. I wish the world of video games had gone farther this direction rather than pulling out completely. Some very sweet memories. Thanks for the nostalgia.

If it makes you feel better, there are still companies making roleplay focused games. Bioware may be going in a different direction, but I'm still holding out hope for DA4. Nothing will ever beat NWN for me because it was my first RPG, however, there are lots of amazing games still out there being made, you just have to know where to look.

It's pronounced "Tommy" but is spelled "Tomi," and Aribeth was supposed to be the tragic fallen heroine. I think her story could have been done better, though.
There are still a lot of online servers running their own specialised modules, both in the original 1.69 Diamond Edition game and the recently released Enhanced Edition (updated with some bug fixes and re-released by Beamdog who obtained the license to the original game)

    • @veneticazero5106

It is my first RPG too. When I was a kid - I really spend a lot of time there.
Yet I couldn't finish the introduction. I was like.. 6 years, I don't know? I literally played for days there, tried different things. Killed npcs, found many npc spawn bugs, learned all dialogues, but couldn't find the exit, lol.
Meeting Aribeth was the Reward after all my researches!
And she seemed like an Angel to me, kid's perception was pure and absolute.
Her music theme, her story, her attitude.
I've stopped playing for an unknown reason during the first act (never could complete any of 4 locations), so this ''image'' stayed with me for years, in my mind.
When I came back to this game later and completed it - Aribeth's story seemed so tragic to me. Personal.
In this regard, I can't imagine it to be better than it is. Very personal story, you know. Haha.

If you don't already have it, there are two main versions. The last version before Bioware stopped updating was 1.69 and Diamond Edition is available from Good Old Games (gog.com)
When Beamdog obtained the license, they updated it and re-released it as the Enhanced Edition. You can buy it directly from their web site or (I believe) also through gog.com
As I understand it, both versions still have a large community of on-line games running, which is where the real strength of the game lies.
While the Original Campaign and the add-on campaigns are good, the real strength of the game and the reason it's lasted so long is that anyone with the game can use the game's "toolset" to create their own game module. There's even at least one Diablo-based server out there, with NWN used to make a game which is very similar to Diablo in most respects (apart from the random dungeon generation which can't be simulated in NWN).

Such wonderful music almost hurts with nostalgia to listen to. It's hard to pin point a single game which started my career as a game developer, but if i could pick only one it would be Neverwinter Nights. Both easy to approach and flexible to code with, it taught me invaluable lessons in design and the overall value and fun to be had with developing your own games. I wish the Enhanced Edition had attracted more funding for a more dignifiying revival.

    • @Zyrek1
      @Zyrek1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly, I think the online portion of the game is probably where most people's fondest memories are. I think I liked the single player campaigns more than most, mainly for their dark, fairytale-esque charm. That said, I wouldn't go in expecting an epic RPG such as Baldur's Gate II or KOTOR. The single player is very charming, but not particularly grand or ambitious.

Majestic! Masterpiece at 19:48 - "Temple of Tyr" & 23:19 - "Resurrection". Maybe, someone knows others similar soundtracks like these ones in the other games??? I really like this type of sounds(melodies). Will be very grateful!

    • @Zyrek1
      @Zyrek1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

The closest soundtracks I can think of (in regards to the overall "tone") would be Oblivion, Morrowind, and possibly Guild Wars (with Oblivion arguably being the most melancholy). I mean, most of Soule's work has a similar sound, but I don't think any of his other soundtracks--save Oblivion--quite compare to NWN. Let me know if you find any others, because I'd love to hear them.

@@LT72884 It starts with an Eb Major arpeggio in 11th position so pretty high up the neck haha! The reason I thought nylon string, is harps don't seem to have the same woody 'twang'. But then, it could just be a virtual instrument, likely with gaming composition? A nice plate reverb yeah!

    😢
i started on this game on 2003. (i was 13 years old)
It was Lady Aribeth that i tried my best for.
Did not even understand most of the story, did not understand character building.
had to struggle with the campaign like mad.
Imagine charisma and wisdom on a fighter. hahah.
i only ventured into online persistent world in June Holidays of 2007.
from then on, I only played Arelith until about 2023.
I had quite a few roleplay scares that made me almost shat my pants in real life.
my first time RPing a drow in the Underdark Udos as a male. did not even know what is matron // Valsharess.. as a clueless Jaluk, daring to say no to a priestess of Lolth. I was almost fed to the kivvil..
    Vith..
Then i played a female priestess so i am not on the bottom of the food chain right?.
and i am foolish for showing sympathy to the lesser races. Stupid me.
i am supposed to rule via fear. right? totally character breaking.
    Lolth Tlu Malla.
So, I figured i had difficulty 'roleplaying' as characters and races i do not know much right? Never quite fitted in and never did leveled far and high enough to survive and explore further.
So, why not, make a male human. fighter.. Weapon Master with a greatsword!
That was when 2010--2012, my most memorable life as a roleplayer. Hahah.
I had the best fun i had in Neverwinter Nights and I totally loved simple fighter going toe on toe with the enemy. easier than magicks and of course, not as strong against a totally buffed up opponent. So i had to resort to rushing into battles i guess.
Honestly, I think i grew up during this time a lot. i had to put myself into the shoes of my character 'Gracielo Espada' and make decisions, moral choices, immoral ones, and watch them play out. and this in turn teach me a bit more about the complexities of the working world.
Around 20ish years old, it was this time when i replayed the Original Campaign. And now, with better command in English, I fell in love with the storywriting, understood the Lady better and the various side quests.
2:28 and 19:48 does make me tear up still.
it is like, i am watching myself now, imagining myself still in those simpler years too.
    Hah! WHAT A RIDE!
    Thanks !!
