    Steely Dan is one of the few, rare bands that flipped all expectations of what progressive rock is supposed to be. Instead of writing long, epic songs with heavy keyboards and classical influences, they incorporated elements of jazz and melodic pop into a unique musical experience. In addition to their musicianship, they were also meticulous about their production values in the studio, which is why their catalog is revered among audiophiles worldwide. Great reaction! And you're only beginning. The album 'Aja' is a true masterpiece.

      Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were known to, once they got a sound in their collective head had actually been known to occasionally spend a whole day of studio time trying to find it. When the day was done, and everybody went home. they called in a whole new group of musicians to come in the next day and see what they could do with it. Unfortunately we lost Walter a few years back but Donald is still playing

    You are right, the beat never changed, but by doing both a sitar solo and an organ solo on top of the beat, it sounds active and moving. This was their very first track on their very first album, and it was a surprise huge hit.

      "Do It Again" by Steely Dan and "The Remembering" by YES inspired me to buy an electric sitar for Christmas one year.
      I haven't played it in years now...I have tingling in my fingers and can't really feel the strings anymore.
      My sitar, acoustic guitar, Les Paul, and bass guitar are retired now.

    • @roundtownKen
      @roundtownKen 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It is not a real sitar. It is a special (6 string) electric guitar created to sound like a sitar made by Danelectro. It is tuned as a "guitar" so it is easy for guitar players to play... vs. A Sitar, which is completely different- in tuning, strings, bridge, everything. Danelectro made electric basses and guitars and was popular in Britain.

    They were an actual band for the first 3 albums, after that it was just Donald Fagen and Walter Becker writing incredible songs and bringing in a plethora of ace studio assassins to record them. Fagen and Becker were notoriously demanding of always getting it to sound just right to their ears. One person in the music industry once dubbed them the "...Manson and Starkweather of rock and roll..." That meaning Charles Manson, whom I assume you have heard of,and Charles Starkweather, who was an infamous mass murderer of the same time period. So,yeah, they weren't the most cuddly dudes in the industry, haha.
    That solo you were trying to place the sound of,it was done by Fagen on a Yamaha YC-30 organ with a sliding pitch control. The "guitar solo" was actually an electric sitar played by Denny Dias.
    The Dan are all over the place musically, but they always find their way back to jazz elements,as Fagen and Becker both considered Dave Brubeck to be a huge influence.

    Steely Dan is its own genre, because they blended styles like no one ever had before or since. No one’s ever tried to sound like them because it’s not possible.

    Oh wow Steely Dan !
    In 1990 my wife and I emigrated from UK to Australia. We stopped off on the way in Hawaii for 1 week holiday to break the journey.
    We rented a Pontiac Firebird 2 seater convertible sports car for the week and almost every day we would drive from Waikiki to the north shore to Sunset Surf Beach .
    The only cassette tape we had with us was a Steely Dan compilation which we played over and over in the car for the whole week.
    Ever since, for over 30 years, whenever I hear Steely Dan, it takes me straight back to Oahu, Hawaii, 1990, driving through the pineapple plantation in a beautiful red convertible with the top down, with my gorgeous young wife, ray bans on, music blaring, to the surf beach on the other side of the island.
    It was the best time in my life, very happy memories !
    It’s amazing how music does that huh ! 😀❤
