  • Powder Coating at Home DIY Guide | Best Cheap Powder Coat System | How to Powdercoat Stuff | Fireblade Project | 003
In this video I share my technique for home powder coating. This method of DIY powder coating using a cheap ebay powdercoating system has yielded some great results using a simple domestic oven in my home workshop.
Here's what I used in this video:
    Home powder coating system: ebay.us/hz6df6
    Gloss Black Powder: ebay.us/H0rrZx
    Sand Blasting Cabinet: ebay.us/vcr3kY
    Iron Silicate Blast Media: ebay.us/njGttg
    Bench Grinder: ebay.us/v51tzY
    150L Compressor: ebay.us/JW0n9m
Powder coating is a great tool to add to your arsenal especially if you're into restoring classic motorcycles and cars. Compared to paint, powder coat is considerably more durable and long-lasting.
In this video I use this cheap ebay DIY powder coating kit to refinish an old rusty grab rail I purchased for my latest motorcycle project, a Fireblade.
The grab rail was originally powder coated, but being the age it is, and probably following considerable use, the bar was in a real sorry state. The original finish was peeling away, and beneath it rust was starting to spread.
Having checked that this relatively large item would fit in my relatively small domestic oven first. I decided that the right way to go in restoring this piece was to powder coat gloss black rather than my usual 2k painting.
As the item will be a contact point on the bike, powder coat was definitely the correct choice of finish and should last for a long time.
Powder coating with a domestic oven at home is quite simple to do and as you'll see in the video, if you can figure out how to hang your metal object in the oven, you can powder coat all kinds of items.
Once the powder has been applied evenly with the powder coating gun, I've had the best results allowing it to bake on for around 30 minutes at 200 degrees celsius. Following this, allow it to cool and your item is ready to go.

You get rain just like us in South Florida! The powdercoat "cake" turned out very nice! I like the coffee container trick too. Speaking of coffee, I think I'll have some! Take care brother!

There's a constant threat of rain unfortunately, but it could be worse.
Cheers, I was pleased with how the grab rail came out in the end too. :) Enjoy your brew mate!

Thank you for this, something I'm thinking of getting into. I think a pot gun seem easy for cleaning for little jobs.
I'm most likely to use pot gun more " though I think I would buy both.

Great video, I learned quite a bit from this video, I've also just bought a grab rail for my 98 CBR 900RRW and was watching your video just to see how you went about tidying up yours and especially the fitting of it. Great video,s by the way 👍👍👍

Great to hear! Powder coating gives such a great finish, and it worked out really well on my grab rail. I find having the grab rail a real boost, especially when putting the blade onto a paddock stand, makes it so much easier.

@@SPANNERRASH that's the only reason for me getting a grab rail, to make it more easy to grab hold of when putting it on a paddock stand or to manoeuvre the bike around 👍👍👍

@@SPANNERRASH you wouldn't no where to buy the little PCB transformer inside this powder coat gun or maybe the full circuit board ?

@@officialmysteriousrider130 Sadly I'm really not sure about that. I'd recommend getting in touch with the supplier. They often stock spares.

I really don't recommend using an oven you will cook in for this! You won't be able to blame me if you do!

What brand and link for this system? Looks like the Harbor Fright model in the USA but with adjustable voltage.

Not sure of the brand, but looking on eBay today it looks like this one from China ebay.us/zHENkH or this one available in the US www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394394816192.

The biggest problem is having an oven large enough to fit things in. If you have an oven that it will fit in then you can powder coat it. You have to get it to the right temperature for the powder to melt and fuse to the item. We keep thinking of making a bigger oven so that we can do frames, but haven't got around to it. Good luck.

If you power coat a long gym bar, can u skip the baking in the oven?

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

The oven baking makes the powder into a solid coating, so I'm afraid you can't skip it, the powder would just rub off.
