    My old VX-7R is getting weak on tx, even with the brand new battery. It's max output is down to about 3.7, and as much as I love it, and have for many years, I have been wanting for some digital features. I bought this radio from HRO, and received it today. Your video SERIOUSLY helped me getting to know all this fancy new stuff. Thank you for the excellently done video! 73 from KF7RXT

    I'll be receiving my new FT5DR this Tuesday (5/17/22). I've looked at a lot of videos and most all were comparing the 5DR to the 3DR, UGH! All they did for the most part was to confuse me. I am new to the YAESU world. I'm coming from an older ICOM (91A from 2006) and other's dating back to the mid to late '80s. Your tutorial made perfect sense and I will be referring back to it as it contains a wealth of great information you made understandable. It's great that you took the time to show the time points for different topics. Frank, thank you, thank you, thank you from an old HAM - N3GOR

    This is really fantastic Frank, I had no idea my FT5D would do all this! I’ve had the FT3D radio for some time for APRS and when I saw the advent of the 5 I jumped on it, but as far as I knew it was just to supplement my APRS hardware. Now with your guide here, lots of new doors are opened to me. Thanks a lot! 73 Tom KC3QAC

Plug it into a windows computer and look at it with disk manager. Delete all but 1 partition. Then you can format it with the pc or put it into the radio and format it.

I have went with the FT991A and about a week ago I bought the FT5DR. Even though this video is 58 minutes it has taken me almost 6 hours to complete it. I would follow along with you and replay some to make sure I had it right. Thank you so much for taking your time to make it. I do have 1 questions. Excellent video Frank, this is a great introduction to the FT5D. I am caught between the VX-6R and the FT5D. Having an issue with deciding which one I want. Any suggestions you can offer?

    • @frankwc0o
      @frankwc0o  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have both. I can really say the VX radio is a tank. It also has three bands. It’s harder to program, but it’s compact and ready to go. On the other hand, the 5D has APRS built in, you can listen to two frequencies at a time, it has a touchscreen, you can record your QSOs, etc. The VX is less expensive and that’s delicate if you drop the radio. The 5d has a colorful screen and the buttons are a bit bigger. On the 5D you can do digital. Both radios you’ll have a lot of fun. But if you want to experiment and have a radio that can expand your curiosity, then the FT might be the radio. On the other hand if you’re just beginning Ham Radio and you want to learn some rudimentary basics on how radios used to be before touch screens, and colorful screens then the VX could be your next radio. Keep watching different videos, listen to what people like about the radios. Then I would recommend going to your nearest Ham Radio store and check out the size of the radio, how it sounds, the feel of the buttons, and just the overall build. The cool thing about Ham Radio is that there’s a variety of radios. There are also ICOM HTs. Good luck.

    Hi Frank - How can I have a list of 2m Repeaters on "A" and a list of 70cm repeaters on "B" and scan them both at the same time?

    What's this big downside I have heard about this unit? I heard someone saying how they messed this radio up and could have been perfect if not for this one factor that pretty much ruins it now? Something about scanning and stopping or picking up the signal but now it can't. You probably know what I am saying but I was thinking about buying this but..... thank for any info you can provide.

    Excellent video tutorial. Just received radio and this was just what I needed. Concerning the lamp. If I set it to 30sec display time when display is dark and radio receives a transmission will the display stay dark or auto light while it is receiving. Like a standby mode dark until receiving. Mine stays dark when incoming transmission just hear audio.
    Thanks

      Thanks for the comment. My 5D stays in the dark when there is a transmission. I think the 30 seconds happens when you touch the buttons or screen. -73

    Very nice! But you said nothing about SCAN function. Is it possible to monitor the frequency while scanning is being process?
    I heard in FT3D we could see the actual frequency of scanning in real time but in FT5D can't.
    May be there is a special option in config menu to change the parameter?

    • @frankwc0o
      @frankwc0o  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time scanning wasn’t like the Ft3d. I talk about it on my comparison of the ft3d vs the 5.

    Frank, I know that all this stuff is in the Yaesu manual, but is there a book that goes through the manual the way you do? (Did you write such a book? I bet it would sell big time! 73 Tom KC3QAC

      Hi. There is no manual like it. There are some ham operators that have a sheet with steps. You may find it online. I would write things out when u learn them, keep a record of it and refer to it later.

    I've got a new FT5D. When I record and set it to also record my microphone while I'm transmitting (3 AUDIO > 6 RECORDING > MIC = ON), I notice when I play file back, the audio level of my own voice is very weak compared with audio level of received stations. Have you observed this also?

    • @FrankRomerophoto
      @FrankRomerophoto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because it doesn't transmit in marine frequencies. TX 144 - 148 MHz or 144 - 146 MHz and 430 - 450 MHz or 430 - 440 MHz

    Thanks for the video. Can you charge the FT5D with 12 volt battery or USB? Thanks K7WHN

    • @frankwc0o
      @frankwc0o  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No USB charging. As for 12 volt battery, I use the cigarette charger. You should do some research on the Yaesu DC E-DC-6 cable. It might be possible to connect that cable directly to the battery. But, again, you should do your research!

    • @frankwc0o
      @frankwc0o  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just read this in the manual. Connecting to an External Power Supply Using a Power Cable
      The optional DC cable (E-DC-6) allows the transceiver to be connected to an external DC power supply. That should be a great start.

      The portable antenna was the Diamond SRH230A It's a triband antenna: www.dxengineering.com/parts/dmn-srh320a?cm_mmc=ppc-google-_-search-_-vendors-_-keyword&gclid=Cj0KCQiA64GRBhCZARIsAHOLriLW5Nnhtvp5LNla6RFEGIAn6XvhWOpVlkRKiWD2co1EMV52HnejJk4aAjJHEALw_wcB. The other antenna was Dr. Fong's J-pole made of ladder line cable. It's the ham - (144-148 MHz and 440-450 MHz) Includes adapters for BNC, SMA and SMA - female. Also includes a 6 ft extension cable. Maximum power input 50 watts.

    54:30 How do you get the CTCSS tone search to work? I've tried tapping that button in the bottom left to search for a tone, but nothing happens (as in, the screen doesn't respond to the tap). Is there an option that you need to enable someplace?

      @@frankwc0o So I got one and have tried it. It will record forever untill the mem card is full. It pauses when there’s nothing on the repeaters which is cool. What’s not cool is the timer works but you can’t time the recording feature. If you go to bed early and want to listen to a freq at a time when your still asleep you’ll have to leave on REC all night and hope the battery doesn’t deplete.
