He should not have let garfield die, there are three 0 mana counterspells i can think of off the top of my head. If he has 1U, 1UU, or 3UU he could've dazed, force of negation or force of will to protect him.
@@AlchemicalLove nope, it says the card may be played as other cards with that mana cost. The mana cost of the card doesnt change, its an alternative casting cost that allows it to go on the stack. The ability exists on the card but doesnt change the cmc of the card so for example, prohibit (counter spell with cmc 2 or less) cannot target force of will even if you paid 0 mana for it because force of will is a 5 cmc card.
"Do you have a counterspell in your hand?" Now not only do they have to answer honestly, but also they cannot counter any spell this turn, because they would no longer have a counterspell in his hand.

Not everyone at FNM keeps up with B&R announcements and at least our local judges don't treat it as intent to cheat, but they will enforce it this way. Hell of a way to find out your playset of Okos is no longer legal though, happened to a friend of mine.

Could you use richard garfield to turn lands into suspend spells without suspending them? Suspend is technically an activated ability, not a cost, but the cards don't have casting costs

"We should ignore actual rulings because cool" is all well and good, but if you're asking "could I do this?", it's still going to be correct to give the actual rules answer. From there, if your local unsanctioned players choose to deviate, that's great. Glad you're having fun. But this is a scenario where it makes a *lot* of sense for them to not deviate, and that should be respected as the baseline.

Jim Dear also you can't cast pact of negation because it's not cmc it's mana cost. Land has no mana cost but pact has a mana cost of 0 mana

It gets removed on cleanup, end of turn effects stop at the endstep
Staying Power references effects that say "end of turn". If you look in the rules for creature damage, those words are not found
