  • The Colorado Z71 is Chevy's answer to the off-road midsize truck. Under the hood is a 3.6L V6 producing 308HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Even though the interior needs an update, is this the 2019 Colorado Z71 the best off-roader for the money?

I’ve had a kinetic blue Z71 Colorado for a year now and it’s been great for my family of 5 and lots of fun as a daily driver. I’ve had two full sized silverados, 2 corvettes, mini cooper, miata, challenger r/t, vw golf gti... With seat time in various vehicles I can honestly say the Colorado has not been disappointing.

I've purchased 3 of these Colorados now. 2 for company use and one for personal use. My personal ride is a z71 Crew Cab 4WD, Midnight Edition. It will get a 3-panel tonneau cover, carpeted bed liner and side rails next week and I'll be done. Unlike the too-large Silverados I USED to drive, I look forward to getting into and driving this truck every day. The only thing I miss is a powered rear window; the 4 door needs it.
    Thanks for a great review!

After three or four years and at that price I’d expect some nicer interior materials. Dodge needs to bring back the Dakota with a beautiful interior like the Ram. Why do they de-power the 3.6 in the Colorado? My 2013 ATS has 321 hp and newer ones have 335 like the Camaro. Nice job Joe! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

Probably for reliability. OEM's will generally tune motors different for truck duty. Good thing is the torque numbers are about the same which IMO, it more important with a truck. Also your Cad has the 6 speed whereas this has the 8 speed. 8 speed is good but it did have some issues with shudder/torque convertor failures with some. I think GM has a new fluid and special bosch transflo machine that fixes the problem now. But it was a problem. Even on the camaros, cads and corvettes. GM can't make a decent transmission like ZF can.

I paid $31,900 for my Z71 crew cab brand new. And it has 6 directional power seats in front. I've never even thought about discomfort in the seats. Makes me wonder why I've heard so much about it. But the 308 horsepower is by far the most I've ever had in a mid size pick up, and I've owned 2 V8 Dakotas and an S 10 with the the 4.3 vortec V6. I think the hard plastic interior makes it very easy to keep clean. I do wish it had a power rear window. The ride is smooth and it handles very well. From what I've heard about the Ranger and the Tachoma, it is much more enjoyable to drive as an everyday truck. I have 71,000 miles on it and have had zero issues with anything. It also came with the 7 speaker Bose stereo system that sounds great. I just don't understand what all of the bitching is about. I guess I'm just easy to please.

I will say this, The new Ford Rangers same price ranges but for 4 cylinder boost motors that lie about gas millage. If you are running under boost you are not getting the 20-29 MPG or whatever the Rangers claim they get. Ford is misleading on this. At least with the chevy you get a N/A v6 that will get good decent MPG for a v6. Also Does the Chevy shown come with a bedliner? Ford asks 35-40k for a decent ranger and no leather and no bedliners. TO me this truck shown is a better deal than the Rangers.

The running boards have to go and a Dremel tool would be needed to cut off that massive front air dam that really saves nothing in terms of gas mileage. Price is high. I'd say a fair sale price would be about $33k-$35k. And no push button start? What year is this again? Not a big deal, but it's still an expensive truck. For $29k out the door, I can get an outdated Frontier PRO4X that's as capable, if not more capable off road.

  • @evo1video

42k??? Wtf the zr2s are going for 39k here in southern California. I would think we would have the higher prices in the country. Most Z71s are going from low 30s to mid 30s depending on 4x2 vs 4x4

  • @thegofastkid806

I hate to leave a negative comment because overall the video is super informative. But when you’re looking at a truck and as you say a Z 71 that is made for work and off-road use. The absolute last thing I am looking at on my list is the texture of the buttons in the dashboard. You said 1 million times how cheap the plastic felt. When I am looking at a truck the number one thing I am looking at his reliability how does the engine perform how does the transmission perform how does the locking rear differential perform. Under load pulling a trailer how does it perform it’s a truck first it’s not a luxury vehicle. I think you’re kind of missing the mark on a truck review by stressing all of the tiny minute details of the interior. To the average truck guy that means absolutely nothing to them

My son and I went car lot cruising tonight after dinner. All the dealerships were closed, which is the best time to go. I hit the Ford dealer and Ram dealer. I left both lots after looking at several trim levels and realized that I'll never be buying a new truck ever again. I'm sorry, not sorry that I refuse to have a $1k payment per month plus taxes and insurance and fuel. Even the new Ranger is out of my price range. Sad.

@DisneyChannelFlow it's pretty damn close. If you get a truck costing $50k out the door, then add in taxes and fees and interest and a five year payment plan...that's around a grand per month. Ridiculous.

I have driven the Colorado, new Ranger and Tacoma. The Ranger seemed the most fun to drive probably because it is the only one with a decent transmission. The Tacoma was a lumbering bore and did not even hold the road very well. I can't see anyone buying one after driving a Colorado or Ranger.
All three have cheaper crap interiors than what we could buy in the 80s.

Why is it Tacoma owners always bring up resale value? The Tacoma must really be junk if their owners are so worried about how much they can get for it when they get rid of it. If were truly great truck, you'd keep it until the wheels fall off.

If you want to off-road in this truck you have to spend an hour removing the air dam (17 torx screws) and the running boards. Plus there's another 1.5 hours to put it back together AFTER YOU CLEAN IT. I don't know what this does for the warranty. If you want an off road vehicle don't buy this. If you want a city vehicle to drive to the hardware store then an SUV is probably good enough.
