Ysaÿe/Kvitko: Piano Transcription of Solo Violin Sonata No. 3 "Ballade"

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 เม.ย. 2013
  • EDIT Oct. 13, 2021: I know it has been absolutely forever, but the sheet music for this piece is finally available here: www.bluegriffin.com/sheet-mus...
I wrote the piece many many years ago on paper, eventually entered it into Finale (version 1.0, I think :), then lost the original manuscript, then lost the file in a computer crash... and then miraculously found out that I gave a copy to a friend who kept it safe. The work is now published by Blue Griffin Music and registered with ASCAP.
    _____________________________________________________________
Sergei Kvitko plays his piano transcription of Eugène Ysaÿe's Sonata for Solo Violin No. 3 "Ballade"
Sergei says: "as far as I know, this is the first and only piano transcription of any of Ysaÿe's violin music for solo piano. To anticipate the question "why do this transcription, as if there were not enough music for piano", I can only say that I fell in love with the power, scope, melodic and harmonic complexity, the explosive expressiveness of this piece so much, that I had to "own" it, I wanted to play it (but not badly enough to start learning how to play violin). I have not changed a single note of the original work, but expanded the harmonies, added inner melodic lines, passages, arpeggios, etc., utilizing the enormous possibilities of the piano to deliver the same musical ideas. This is probably one of the most difficult and technically demanding pieces I have ever played, largely due to some ungodly jumps and abundance of tenths that required extreme stretches in both hands."
Filmed at Molly Grove Chapel, First Presbyterian Church; Lansing MI
Cameras: Jack Schaberg and Bob Kunc
Directed and edited by Sergei Kvitko
From Sergei's CD "Ad Libitum", available from Blue Griffin here bit.ly/AdLibitum

...now hold on one minute! Actually, being a violinist and pianist this is a great idea. It only further displays Ysaÿe's compositional variety and genius. A harmonic richness that only violinists were privy to knowing. And quite a few sections benefit from the polyphonic fleshing out that the piano affords. Bravo.

@@rainchen7846 I'm also not familiar with Rachmaninoff's style of arranging (don't know if he did any). What I meant to say was that the way this arrangement sounds it could have been an original piece for piano by Rachmaninoff. This piano arrangements adds lots of notes (tastefully, in my opinion) like contrary motion in left and right hand, some two against three motions, and cascading arpeggio's.
Not an expert at Rachmaninoff, nor at piano, but it was just my impression. :)

That “vibe” sounds more Scriabin than Rachmaninoff to me.

@@fyliao I think that's Ysaye's composing. The extensive use of melodic chords and in general the more maximist pianism makes me think of Rachmaninoff's piano writing.

Truly a piece between the ages and styles. Starting with Expressionism, then trying desperately to hold on to Late Romanticism, a brief impressionistic interlude, and then back to firmly re-establishing the piece itself in late romantic tonality.

Ever since I heard this piece for the first time (rendition of Vengerov), I absolutely adored it. However, I did have some trouble understanding the underlying harmony starting at 3:36. This arrangement with the added harmonies in the left hand at 3:44 makes so much sense and so beautiful, I prefer this piano arrangement over the violin one. (I am a pianist so I may be biased).

I completely understand what you mean about needing to play this on your instrument; I've only discovered the piece in the past month, and I keep listening and searching for someone who will play it the way I hear it! (I'm a clarinetist and opera singer.) I think your version is very successful; it works so well that it almost sounds like Ysaye really meant to write it for piano.

Your transcription is beautiful. I always thought Ysaÿe's music as full of "chopinesque" vibes, it becomes even more obvious here. The great belgian virtuoso is too often underrated as a composer, so you do him justice here. Great work and interpretation !

Interestingly enough this piece was specifically written to emphasize and celebrate one of ysaye's contemporaries at the time, so maybe you should check out George Enescu too! Ysaye actually did this with with all 6 of his sonatas to pay homage to different European composers of his time and their unique sound.
