As a mom looking to buy a house, I would want a tub too or a shower that has a deeper floor well. Even adults like a bath. Maybe speak to a real estate agent to see if you can get more money
Let me tell you brother. I am a 44 year old tradesman myself, You're 25, and you got it going on Bo. I appreciate seeing this in younger men, for all of you younger guys that don't quite know what you want to do in life yet, I would highly advise you to learn a trade as opposed to any type of degree, the exception would be a lawyer, doctor or something along those lines. HVAC, plumbing etc, a trade can take you so far in this life. Stay blessed!
All that pex and old plumbing is wild. It wouldn’t be expensive or difficult to run new plumbing and make sure your shut offs are redone to avoid huge expensive issues down the road.
I know a lot of old houses had newspaper on the walls. They had to do something to keep the cold out. I'm glad to see demo day, and I'm looking forward to the transformation.
I think you should just add the bathtub now and then the bathroom will be completely DONE! It probably will be cheaper now than doing another Reno down the road. Skylight is a great idea
Definitely down to the studs so you can check for wetness and insulate. It is some plumbing work but consider put the toilet on the other end of the showe. You'll have sufficient room to stand and still have the room for a tub if someone wants later. Pocket door for sure!
It's getting more and more exciting. This will be a really nice remodel. Can you take your measurements and layout of the room to menards or some place similar. They could give you several different lay out designs. I really like your idea of the L shaped counter thing. That will keep you from walking to close to the lower ceiling on that side of the wall. 😊
Adding a tub now would help with selling the house. The buyers may need it or their guest, and they have to think about THEIR resale with no tub. Folks don't want to buy a house knowing the may need to remodel it for a tub - time and expense they won't want to hassle with. But I like a walk-in shower, great for those with mobility issues.
Very good points. I would never buy a house without a tub. We needed it when children were small, we both use it to relax now, but we also use it to wash our dogs. Just something to consider, who will be able to afford your house at its completed price point, because if it's priced for younger or first-time buyers, a tub would be a good selling point. I also had to use a tub after an injury for soaks. Walk-in shower is really important for mobility issues for sure, though, as well as aging--jodi made a great point there.
That wood you showed when you were showing the newspaper the walls left of that towel rack the wood with the lines in it, that's termite eaten. You have to replace those boards. The termites may have done it long ago and be gone now, but if you jab a screw driver in it, you will find that it's almost like paper. You can also put OSB or plywood across that entire wall. That's not water damage and it's an outside wall.
I think you should go ahead and put in a stand alone tub if you plan too sell. A complete bath is better for buyers. I would also add a bath fan with maybe a light to vent the steam out of the room.
Demo day, let's bust stuff! Sure makes things easier with a chain saw. The last remodel prep I did was with a smoky gas chain saw. Noisy and smelly but still quick and easy. So many questions. New wrinkle, slab means no crawl space. Does it have a decent footing? Pex and PVC plumbing tells me it's not that old.... 50 yrs is not that old to me. Shiplap says likely pre-Korean or WWII. The bathroom was a post outhouse era add-on. I would avoid crowding everything in one corner. No one wants to be knocking knees on the shower and tub while concentrating on... you know. It looks like a long history of remodels and changes. You're just the latest. Side note, I'm following another young guy who bought an abandoned school that needs a whole lot more work. He's pretty much working without posting so not much to watch. You're getting serious from the git-go. Kudos to you. 🤠👍
So let me tell you about my shower, Dalton. Previously there was a garden tub that was pulled out when the prior owners got older and needed something handicap accessible. They did not replace the tub, just tiled in the six foot by six foot box. Believe me that more room in the shower feels like a luxury. When we bought it, the flipper had not placed a door yet. I had just spent a week trying to clean the bathrooms in our prior house and the aluminum track, hinges and connectors from our glass door was a PITA. So you know what we did here? One 7ft by 3ft panel of glass on the showerhead side of the opening, that's it. No hinges, no track to step over. It is so easy to keep clean and looks great.
Looks great. Interested to see if you can save any of that newspaper to get a year. Appears house is older than I thought. I would put the tub drain under the vanity and let any new owners aware it's available. Def put in the sky light above the shower. Pocket door seems doable and is a true space saver. Look forward to what you choose.
Hey Dalton, not unusual for old valves to leak through, you might want to consider replacing the water control to your bathroom. BTW way, have used "shark bite" fittings for several years, I've found them to be very reliable, not to mention ease of installation. Really like the skylight proposal, good quality and installation with attention the flashing is a must, skylights have a reputation for being leak freaks. For what my opinion is worth, I would go forward with installing a bathtub for the little extra it would cost, locating as you proposed; I think it would pay dividends when you want to sell. Besides, you may want a bubble bath after a difficult and sweaty day at work, LOL. Looking forward to seeing your glass shower creation, I'm certain your trade skills will ,make it over the top!
Yeah I’m thinking about proceeding with the bathtub. It probably wont add much cost and it’ll be overwith. Glad to hear something good about sharkbite. I’m thinking about using them as much as i can
Tyvek dog food bags are great for demo waste. if your dog doesn't eat enough to get 40-50 pound bags drop some food off at the local animal shelter and just ask them to save the woven fabric bags for you. It a great trade. They get food and you get extra demo bags. Tile and glass won't hardly cut them. I use them all the time.
A bath attached to a bedroom may have a “24 in door. And closet doors are just about anything that works. A 5 foot wide closet should have a minimum of a 28” door but most would find a 32 or 36 inch nicer to access the whole closet. Or a double 20” door is even better. Most walk in closet will have a 28” door.
Hi Dalton, you may want to consider a pocket door going into your bathroom. Looks like you have enough wall space for one. Demo is the funnest part of remodeling!
I have a pocket door that separates tub & toilet area from the sink vanity area and it's great! Tucks away when I don't need it, adds privacy when I do need it. That's a great idea if that wall is empty space!
Hi Dalton, your plan is good. Widening doorway’s and putting in a drain ready if someone want’s to put in a bath later on. An L shaped sink cabinet will solve the storage and hide the pipes. A sky light will look great, help with natural light and condensation. Well thought out plan. Taking out the cupboard has made the bathroom so much bigger.
well... since you've started and getting in to it all... then it's a good thing to shut off your water main and put in all new water valves (and go with the good ones... don't go cheap on them) and set the pressure on them down to 60 psi or maybe a little less (don't need to stress your water lines)... and save that wood (extra wood is always handy)... have fun...
Here a few things to consider. Resale house- set it up as s home for someone in wheel chair and they need wider doors, shower stale and accessible kitchen follow recommendations for the hand cap. Since you have a small home and single story and driveway you need to add small ramp to porch and porch doors. Would make it easy sell to someone handy capable or senior citizen with mobility issues. Put your big home build and workshop at the top of hill. Remember always put a shower wand in the shower area ( make easier to clean stall, pets and people with a wand) and consider to make a steam room/sauna in the shower comb area with a fold down seat make sure there it has as much room as you can in the shower use space next to your new wider door. If you have any wall space left remember a place to hang towels to dry or maybe put in heated towel rake, or better yet drying station with blowers to dry yourself. With blow drying station then do not need for towel racks or hooks and you will have less laundry to do. M Remember excellent ventilation especially if you do the steam shower. You want to avoid mold. Put in a place in the shower like shower nook or shelf with hooks to put your shampoo, conditioner body wash, back brush, hand towels or loofah, squeegee, and other stuff. Also consider water conservation when picking out plumbing supplies. Shower head must have a variety of water streams. If you go with rain shower head you might have to give up your sky light? If you do make sure you put a good light either way in the shower because if you want a shower at night you will still need light and the sky light is no good at that time. Also put in a Smart Japanese style toilet. It is both a toilet and a bidet in one very helpful for cleaning back sides specially for handicap and saves on toilet paper. Please leave plenty room around toilet no one likes being cramped in. And remember your standing height too. You will not need a tub if you do all these things listed above. Use that room to put in linen closet or open shelves or towel racks. Put in a full mirror behind the sink up the wall will great for someone in wheel chair or a tall person. If you want to get fancy put the water taps through the sink mirrored wall and the lighting too. Put in mirror medicine cabinet in the lower wall and set up a vanity table with lights if you want to add more luxury for your bathroom with a nice chair. Do not use small tiles- grout cleaning is a pain to keep clean. Use big tile or stone less grout. If you can go with one piece on the walls and shower floor no grout even better! Keep it easy to clean. These are just some ideas to keep in mind. I hope this gives you some new things to consider? Look at your goals do you want to increase resale, or do you want easy of cleaning, or do you want luxury or functional? Have fun making your dream bathroom.
The skylight would be amazing, and would change the look of the whole room with bringing in so much natural light. You’ve got some great plans and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!
When I moved into the house I'm at now, the master had a waterfall shower head in addition to the regular one. I had never had one before so I didn't think too much about it, but now that I e been here for a while, it's the best shower head I've ever used. Whenever I'm traveling for work I miss it. Since you're already planning on doing so much to that bathroom you might want to consider one. They are awesome!
I'll admit it, I'm a grandma. You didn't show yourself pulling the door hinge pins so on the first door, I thought you just man handled it! Too funny! Loved this video. Thanks😂
Dalton I have done a lot of remodeling of old houses just an FYI I have seen some really bizarre framing that was done many years ago just be sure walls aren’t load bearing as you go. Roof framing doesn’t matter. There could be chopped off rafters unsupported or who knows what overhead. Try to get an eye on what’s above at some point just so you don’t have surprises! 👍👍👍👍. Love it opened up. Looks great. 👍 I am with you, strip the walls down and go new. Insulate if you need to also. Get some blue painters tape and mark it off on floor. Make sure you allow for knee and elbow room.
An idea would be a velux window in the roof. These can open for ventilation and close if it rains. Light light and then more light. By a transom over the shower door do you mean closing it in to the roof? It would cause lots of humidity problems and the Louvre type are horrible to keep clean. Same as previous comment just a glass wall between the wc and shower. A wet room is soo much easier to clean. Grouting is horrible so not having any is my ideal. 20 odd years ago I thought it was good idea to have mosaic tiles in-our bathroom. Wrong! It wasn’t! In the US you have more options. Cladding that is one surface for walls and floor, no grout no leaks my idea of heaven.. glad not to see snakes. I could breathe when you came out from the crawl space🤭🤭🤭🤭👏👏👏❤🤞🤞
I love stuff like this. I’ve always admired people who have a mental vision for design. I could be helpful during the demo part, but trying to figure out how to put things back together where it makes sense is impossible for me. Good luck with everything and stay safe. I’ll be watching 👀😀
So happy to see the house renovation begin. You have some great ideas and I can't wait to see what you do with the place! Great confidence in your abilities based on everything you've done up to this point!
I don’t know how old the original part of the house is, but in the olden days, before sheetrock, they would use newspapers over the lap boards to block drafts. Wallpaper was expensive and if you’re poor you use what you have and use wheat paste to put the newspaper on. It was about function and utility and not beauty.
Currently, you are occupying the place, so make it how you like. I believe that by having only a shower stall is a great idea. Maybe a "sauna/ shower combo would be nice.
Tour de force! Wow! Having the right tools ( never mind the strength!!) made that look easy! No music was great!! This house is going to be so much fun to watch come together! Already so satisfying! Thanks for great video!🙏
Hi Dalton!☺ Just removing the closet in the bathroom made a huge difference with the space! I love the idea of a skylight over the shower to help brighten the space. I would suggest eliminating the door from the bedroom into the bathroom since the small room next door already gives you access to the bathroom without going through the laundry room. Since it would be expensive to raise the roof angle on that entire side of the house, adding a dormer window in the Bathroom and small room facing the back of your property would bring in more light/ventilation and give you more headroom. It would also allow you to keep the vanity in the same location. Also a right hand swinging door into the bathroom would make it more open now that the closet is gone. Just my 2 cents lol🤣 I love the progress so far. 😊
I think a little port window (not sure thats what they are called, kinda like roundish, and it can open for air if u want and a screen.).. would look good inside the shower where that square window is.. then u can look outside., or at the stars or the moon..hehehe Great demo job, btw,, cant wait to see the finished product.
I'm age 21 but have been doing construction for almost 2 years. This demo is my jam. I'm curious about the ceiling is right next to the drywall. Is there any insulation up there? I don't know if there is any insulation in the wall with the plumbing--that is one concern to check on of course. About the ceiling--I think I had oped there was more space up there that could be tapped into. I look forward to seeing how this remodel comes out!
You have a great vision. I think your idea for the shower is nice. Think about your plan and make it so your resale will bring you the most profit. Or, if your plan is to keep it, make it the best for your own comfort. Either way the end product will be beneficial for you. 👍👍👍
@@kathrinekerns8398 absolutely! I’m going to stay cheap on material everywhere i can. I don’t see a good purpose in going expensive on anything, except the shower. Just because thats my specialty
Well, you upped your thumbnail creation. You remind me of Bain in Batman. I would recommend buying some graph paper and draw the space with the placement of the shower, toilet and vanity. Be sure to consider door swings. Good video hardest working man I see.
Hey Dalton, some of the construction was quite well done. You made a lot of progress on the demo in this video. I noticed you use mostly Dewalt/Black and Decker battery tools. I used to like them myself except for their sawzall and their battery lawnmowers suck big time. Adding a tub would add to the resale value especially if someone has small children.
@@frankintx699 haha they have several different reciprocating saws, some are better than others. Did you have the 40v mower? They discontinued that one because of how poorly it performed
@@marchingmoto No I had the dual 60v self propelled $700. It and the batteries lasted 2 seasons I bought 2 new batteries at $600. plus tax then the mower quit, it melted the pulley. I returned the batteries for a $549 Honda Mower.
@@frankintx699 yeah i’m not sure the electric technology is there yet for the mowers. I love battery trimmers, but i’d stick to honda for mowers as long as you can.
They make a tool to remove shar bite fittings. You will need to buy a proper basin wrench for the future . I think another way to do this forget this space as a bathroom and put the bathroom on the porch side of the bedrood and put in a beam and open the interior wall and use some of the old bathroom for closet space .
A sawz all (corded) will serve you well. I don't understand the demo chainsaw. But I'm old and when I started there were no batteries on chainsaws. Just cords on sawz alls 😂
Why not do a freestanding tub with a freestanding shower kit? You would not have to make any surround for a shower or even tile the walls. The vintage look would be very aesthetic too and you could just do drywall and paint for the walls.
If you do just a shower, corner shower won’t take up much room. Run the shower tub along the same side where toilet is and put toilet where the towel rack is.
And away we go.... Progress will be obvious, good going. .With your works planned, is it worth hiring a skip? It would save you trips to the tip. Just an idea. It's good to think about things as you progress. Things often look different and options can open up. Honestly don't be in a hurry to get rid of windows, they make everything seem more open. It can be opened for the shower easily. Different but possible.
@@dbrew2881 i’d love to but theres nowhere for it to slide since the ceiling rakes down. And it cant slide the other way because of the wall separating from the living room
I think your plans for the bathroom sound really good, although i do find it strange having two doors to work around aswell....ill have to look for the layout video again as it does confuse me 😂 what do you listen to when you are working? What type of audiobooks or music ?
Since i started working on the house i’ve listened through: Breaking Free From Broke- George Kamel Necessary Endings- Henry Cloud Thou Shall Prosper- Rabbi Daniel Lapin Traction: Gino Wickman Besides that its usually the Ramsey show. Rarely music anymore
Dont know if this is possible but I would move the toilet snd use all that shower wall area for a large shower and use same drain. A lot of vacation units do this for a big bang. Over head rain shower with side body spray.
Do you have a community college or technical school nearby with a drafting or architecture program? Or know someone who uses CAD programs? You might could take in measurements and a rough drawing for them to work up a blue print of placement options. They would know standard sizes of tubs and spacing needed around the toilet, etc. Could be good practice or assignment project for students. Or a side gig for an experienced architect, for a small fee. Or you might get some valuable free advice just for asking.
Seems like you might end up with too big of a bathroom for a small house. Is it possible that some of the extra space could be better utilized to add space or storage to the room next to the bathroom? Just a thought. Also, from my experience, trying to guess what future buyers might want (bathtub) is not always worth the trouble. The shower alone would appeal to plenty of buyers (or renters).
After thinking about this more you should definitely include a bathtub or have a place for one. With only the one bathroom any woman or anyone with kids would want a tub.
Sink won't work there because you are putting a 2' deep counter to the right of it. A 2' sink would be very cramped. Put the vanity where it is now. Put a 30" x 60" shower where the tub was. With the 36" door your house could be attractive to handicapped or elderly. Accessible homes rent like hot cakes. Empty walls allow for the tenant to put in their own such as an antique holding towels etc. I tear out all exterior walls and insulate them. Nothing is wrong with the old layout now that you've removed that huge closet.
As a mom looking to buy a house, I would want a tub too or a shower that has a deeper floor well. Even adults like a bath. Maybe speak to a real estate agent to see if you can get more money

That much plumbing inside cabinets could take up a lot of storage space. However, maybe using Pex would solve that.
Yeah it would just be two pex lines along the back wall of the cabinets and a drain

I imagine that a lot of people don't know what Troy Lee Designs is. As a motocross guy I know all the brands.
Back in the old days people would put anything they could to keep out the cold, newspaper pasteboard, just anything.
I think your ideas are on the right track make up for the space by making the bathroom as luxury looking as possible
great start , its going to be grand
Those Sharkbite caps are removable. You can get a removal tool at Home Depot/Lowes.
What a name! 🐬
I don’t know how old the original part of the house is, but in the olden days, before sheetrock, they would use newspapers over the lap boards to block drafts. Wallpaper was expensive and if you’re poor you use what you have and use wheat paste to put the newspaper on. It was about function and utility and not beauty.
Wish we could see the year on that newspaper!
I would move in ASAP, you will get way more done if you are living there. Is it possible to end your lease at your apartment early?
Love your video’s!! The skylight is a great idea!
Currently, you are occupying the place, so make it how you like. I believe that by having only a shower stall is a great idea. Maybe a "sauna/ shower combo would be nice.
He's in Arkansas!
Tour de force! Wow! Having the right tools ( never mind the strength!!) made that look easy! No music was great!! This house is going to be so much fun to watch come together! Already so satisfying! Thanks for great video!🙏
I really your neatness and work ethic 😊
oh wow house action!
You have great ideas! I appreciate the input a lot!
@@marchingmoto You're very welcome!☺ It's what I do so I like to help when I can😁
Wow, you're getting there, doing good.
❤😊 Can't wait to see your design vision ❤😊
You have some awesome ideas.make sure you have room around the toilet so you can easily work on it if necessary
Looks good
Looking forward to seeing that glass shower exiting!
Yeah, looking good,almost 10k too.
I agree. I would do a 36”x36” walk in shower
I love the idea of a skylight
Yes! Skylight great idea! 🌫
@@marchingmoto Your skill level is awesome. I was only trying to encourage you, not to discredit what you are doing. Drive on. 🤗🤗
@@kathrinekerns8398 i was agreeing with you! Haha
@@marchingmoto 😎😎😎
What about a walk-in shower, I always like those. Lots of room
Demo by chainsaw, love it! Ann in Indiana
Hi Ann! Judy in Arizona.
Well, you upped your thumbnail creation. You remind me of Bain in Batman.
I would recommend buying some graph paper and draw the space with the placement of the shower, toilet and vanity. Be sure to consider door swings.
Good video hardest working man I see.
My coworkers always say i look like bane in that respirator hahaha. Thanks!
@@marchingmoto I am 71 and do not plan on purchasing any more mowers.
You could move the tiny window to above the toilet too.I skye light is a great idea.
Can't wait to see what you do with that bathroom.i say, build it bigger
Skylight sounds great but may cause roof leaks. Also make sure you add lighting inside the shower or it will be dark at night. Enjoying your videos!
@@minniequintanilla510 like i mentioned i’m a glass guy as my full time job. Installing skylights is part of my trade. Thanks for the support!
@@cannedheat33 my chainsaw was just already in the room. 22:00 i’m using my reciprocating saw
Dalton-I’m trying to gage the ceiling heights-how tall are you?
@@tomholmes1350 i’m 6’2” about 6’4” with my boots on
ahh, always enjoy demo days.
Why not do a freestanding tub with a freestanding shower kit? You would not have to make any surround for a shower or even tile the walls. The vintage look would be very aesthetic too and you could just do drywall and paint for the walls.
Oh yes, demo day!!
Alot of work but will be very satisfying in the end
Was already pretty satisfying!
Ever thought of a barn door? Loved the demo with the chainsaw 😅
@@dbrew2881 i’d love to but theres nowhere for it to slide since the ceiling rakes down. And it cant slide the other way because of the wall separating from the living room
Don't like barndoors! They seem cutsy?
Would washer and dryer fit on the short ceiling wall? Then a nice mud room at entrance.
Maybe a pocket door would work
I think your plans for the bathroom sound really good, although i do find it strange having two doors to work around aswell....ill have to look for the layout video again as it does confuse me 😂 what do you listen to when you are working? What type of audiobooks or music ?
Since i started working on the house i’ve listened through:
Breaking Free From Broke- George Kamel
Necessary Endings- Henry Cloud
Thou Shall Prosper- Rabbi Daniel Lapin
Traction: Gino Wickman
Besides that its usually the Ramsey show. Rarely music anymore
Man even though its electric careful with that chainsaw dude thatll still do alot of damage if it throws the chain.
Dont know if this is possible but I would move the toilet snd use all that shower wall area for a large shower and use same drain. A lot of vacation units do this for a big bang. Over head rain shower with side body spray.
Are you able to check the hot water heater?
Do you have a community college or technical school nearby with a drafting or architecture program? Or know someone who uses CAD programs? You might could take in measurements and a rough drawing for them to work up a blue print of placement options. They would know standard sizes of tubs and spacing needed around the toilet, etc. Could be good practice or assignment project for students. Or a side gig for an experienced architect, for a small fee. Or you might get some valuable free advice just for asking.
I like your idea
I found your tearing the bathroom apart to be strangely satisfying. I think you should just put a tub in straight off.
Go to Home Depot or Lowe's with the bathroom measurements and they'll do a 3D layout in front of you for free.
Save the window to get rid of the humidity, or are you installing a fan?
Gonna add a fan for sure
👍
My 2 cents. Forget tub. If need be a small freestanding claw foot tub. Do not spend all your money on bathroom.
So do you have another bathroom or is that the only one?
This is the only one
Nothing is wrong with the old layout now that you've removed that huge closet.
anyone going the mention that the foundation is borked 😬
