- Hey everyone, the air suspension on our E550 recently failed. Instead of replacing it, we decided to convert it to a static suspension for reliability reasons. We purchased our new suspension from strutmasters. So far we are really liking the new setup, minus the high ride height in the rear. Enjoy the video!

I watched this video a few time before I made my decision but I am glad I did. The Benz is a very reliable vehicle but when that suspension goes man you will be stressed. Please don't let it have a leak during the winter months it will be all the way on the ground. Guys great video and thanks for helping make the decision Mercedes Benz enthusiast hate lol and that is castrating the airmatic suspension. The ride quality is still Mercedes Benz like and ride height is perfect. I went with Touring Tech conversion kit. Thanks again fellas
looks good - its kinda nice having it on the high side especially after dealing with the broken airmatic suspension.
The reason why the rear is so high is because the shop they took it too put the bottom spring holders on backwards. There’s a slight angle on them so if you don’t install them on the correct side or correct angle it cause the car to look higher or one side look higher

Great to see. I’m considering ordering for my CL500 even though I ain’t had the problem yet. Wondering if there are any other parts needed to do full conversion? ie sway bars etc ??
I'd recommend going with BC racing coilovers because they are adjustable
No BC option for CL w215. Got 03 CL55. I have Yellow speed racing coilover ready to go in. First I will cap lines to see how it feels. Then I will get power steering pump and install sway bars, which I already have parts for.

It's really close to the air ride and I'm a Mercedes enthusiast, you do feel a difference at lower speeds especially with cheap tires but above 45 mile-per-hour it floats so similarly. Only issue is if I go over up three or four inch big pothole the rear struts make a loud knocking sound at the top of the strut by my rear seats? Does yours do that too? Again thanks for your review or I might have bought are Arnotts conversion and heard it's a way stiffer ride with them.
MRBADASS ours makes no noises at all. Maybe it wasn’t installed properly. You should probably have it looked at
@@theconfortibrothers2827 Okay, I installed them myself it's only 4 bolts slides into place honestly nothing to mess up..might be a S Class weight issue I mean they make zero noise only if I hit a big hole at semi high speed..thanks again
I have strut master, how much the average installation would cost?
I recently bought a used 2002 CL600. The previous owner installed a STRUTMASTERS KIT. The front sits about 1.5 inch off of the front tires and the rear looks like a 4x4 pickup. I called STRUTMASTERS customer service trying to remedy it and can't even remember a good conversation out of them because they instantly defend the fact that the warranty is not transferable to me as the new owner. I've even asked about purchasing a new set of coils. Reply " you'll have to purchase the complete kit"!
So I just purchased a complete set of YELLOW SPEED adjustable coilovers.
Did the back of the car ever settle ?

Fit higher profile tyres…problem fixed. I had a ML350 and had nothing but problems with the air suspension
so e500 2004 can be fit on regular air suspension and be comfortable
Having the opposite effect on my 210 wagon. It’s low in the back. I hope when I choose to put this in my 211 wagon I get that lift in the back.

I own a 2008 Benz E550 and I just replaced the back airmatic suspension (on the drivers side). I noticed that the car level isn't the same since the replacement. On the drivers side, front and back level is lower than the front n back side of the passengers side. Do I need to replace the airmatic for the passenger side too or convert the coils? just like you did with yours.
Cabana Mbaekwe if you only replaced the drivers side, chances are the other side will go out soon. Usually, you’ll want to replace both sides so they are both new and the ride height is perfect. If you only replaced the drivers side rear, you should also replace the passenger side rear.

Coil Suspension seems to be the best option after the airmatic suspension breaks.... I'd buy your car because I believe there's nothing to worry about... It's a stable ride and safe...
Any idea how to stop the malfunction code that keep coming up after replacing it with normal shocks?
There's a relay you plug in. Google air ride warning light delete.

Murat Shamshidinov we had a new custom kit made for the rear so now the ride height is perfect. If you put in your info on the strutmasters website, it will give you the set for your car. It was about $800 to have it installed

hey guys good job...i prefer coil suspension over air...my old 330i Bimmer had coil and the ride was pretty good now I am trying to see some rock solid coil overs for cls550 4matic 2012..strutmaster dont make it...any suggestions???

Supreme Benz we had the company make us a new kit for the rear to make it lower and now it's perfect. When you purchased the kit, it comes with a module to clear the suspension light but we never installed it.

Murat Shamshidinov the company said there was a flaw causing the rear to sit high. They sent us out the new kit to lower the rear for free

@@johnnymurphy2015 A strut was missing from my order so they had to send a replacement. I sent them some pictures and they 2 day fedexed one to the same place so that's good, but I'll have to find time to make another trip down.
Also I don't think these are adjustable, and I've heard they often sit a bit higher than stock. I'll come back and let you know how mine turned out when I eventually get it done lol.
hi. the air suspensions went off on my 2003 e500 it's rear wheel drive and a friend of mine have a 2004 e320 with standard suspensions his Benz needs engine so he offered me to have his ca r suspensions do u think they'll fit on mine?
Monir Obaid if his is also a rear wheel drive model, it will probably work. Keep in mind that the malfunction light will be on your dash unless you install an override to turn that off. It's not a big deal though. Checkout some forums to see if anyone else has done that conversion. If you do it and it works, let us know!
Can I just replace my air suspension on my E550 4matic with coilovers from a similar year E350 4matic? My theory is that since it’s the same vehicle underneath parts should be interchangeable. Having said that I really don’t mind malfunction errors
Yes you could do that. You may need to replace the rear control arms

Great looking car but that ride height and the dash light should be fixed. Seems like a downgrade from the airmatic but it’s good for a daily driver
where to get the override on the too low stop car sign in dash??????
the only down side to having that in the dash is that we can't check oil level

Brian Monge it comes with a module to clear that. However, we never installed it and ours just says malfunction when we first start the car

ragnar barker all we did was remove the air struts, springs, and a fuse in the fuse box. So yes, the car can be put back to airmatic

What does the malfunction light look like and would it interfere with registering the car

How did you get the rear fixed what did you do?
I installed these Strutmasters coilovers on my 2003 S600 and it sat the exact same way. Front lower than stock and the rear way up in the air. It looked ridiculous and for looks I definitely don't recommend this kit. Ride and handling were comparable to factory

presariomizuno this suspension is not adjustable. We installed a new kit on the rear to lower it. Checkout our update video on it
presariomizuno it's a static kit. Not adjustable. I believe it was $1200
do you need bypass ecu kit? does the car show any error?

Do not replace the original air suspension with the strutmaster suspension you will regret it. Changing mine is actually one of the biggest mistakes I've made in my life.

Why not swap to the OEM E350 suspension setup? Cheap to switch to Bilstein B8 shocks and H&R springs.

Sean Jandu we have 19 wheels on it and you definitely feel more going over bumps buts it’s a smooth ride other than that

You have to do front and back together. It was around $800 for install
A problem with mine is that it doesn’t start because all the air suspension is blown out so I’m going to do this hopefully it will start after this
Exposzheho we didn't know it was possible for it not to start with broken suspension. Ours still started but never raised

yes a malfunction light will come on but the kit comes with a module to turn that off

Other than the fact that the strutmasters units totally f*cked your car up at the rear, and they never respond, it all went "great". Good job.
It will break in and lower down over time about 3 months
We posted an update video on it. Strutmasters sent us a new custom lowering kit. It's perfect now
Coil suspension is the way to go especially on a Mercedes that's older, on the E class and S Class, if you are not a DIY person, you take these vehicles to the Mercedes Benz Dealer get ready for a enormous service repair bill. The service might be worth more than your older Mercedes, Arnott Coil suspensions are great on the S Class versions. These ABC systems where not reliable from the start, benz knew it, and still put them on the vehicle. Monopoly at the dealership to charge customers exorbitant repair costs. Once you change out this horrid system you can sleep good at night knowing your Mercedes Benz will not be leaking fluid or sitting on the ground by morning.

@Phuong It could be, but I don't know to much about BC. It could be other coil suspension conversion kits. But some Mercedes Benz enthusiasts, I have had talking with about S-Class Mercedes the S500, S430 S55 Amg models informed they have gotten 100k miles on the Arnott kits with no problems.
@Phuong Yes it rides wonderfully, I have gotten the chance to ride in a S500 that had the Arnott Coil suspension kit, it was very smooth its just not adjustable like BC, I am thinking, but still a wonderful plush ride for the particular model Mercedes.

The Conforti Brothers I called them and he told me to use the e550 kit for my e500 came with the bypass sensor but is that sensor really needed cause i would expect the work to do that would be a headache

Ralph Bowen it was sitting too high so we told the company and the designed a whole new kit for the rear that was lower to match the front

This people from Strutmasters have a rip off with the so called "conversion kit". They advertise this conversion kit will solve the issue of the expensive airmatic ride in Mercedes Benz. On the contrary, the product is a very low quality, highly expensive replacement part since it does not last more than a year and a half. When you contact them, they say it is not their fault, that they only buy parts from other vendors and put them together and they supposedly do not have any control on the durability of parts. The kit is $1,300 initially and they don't sell just the front or back sets, you have to buy the whole thing. Later on, when it fails, they urge you to buy the whole thing again. And the discounted price they tell you they will give you if anything happens in the future is not true. They charge $586 for each seat, front or rear, which is basically the initial price. I urge all owners of Mercedes Benz to buy the replacement airmatic struts and save the headache of having a below average conversion with a kit that does nothing of what is advertised and really turns your car in a piece of junk that is almost impossible to go back to the airmatic. The movements of the car change and then when the Strutmasters shocks begin to fail they make a horrible squeaking noise that is almost unbearable. I wish I never bought the kit from them. I only had to save a little and buy the real thing, the OEM struts that would last years and years before failing.
Seti Depp we left the air lines so we can go back anytime we want. Honestly, we haven’t had any issues so far but we can say from experience that their customer service sucks. We would’ve went with BC racing coil overs but they aren’t available for 4Matic cars. We do miss the air ride quality but the car only gets driven a couple hundred miles a year so it’s not bad
@@theconfortibrothers2827 I agree 100% with you about the cuatomer service; simply the worst!! That, combined with a poorly designed and manufactured system is a recipe for disaster. On a long enough timeline you'll be back to the Airmatic. I am sure. I am in that process right now...

Stay away from Strutmasters…… you get garbage from them, cheap expensive parts, I'll probably have to replace the struts and shocks in a year or two, go with Arnotts or Coilovers.

Easy fix. Open the trunk and load brick by brick until designated ride height is reached. Problem solved. Lol

Im about to buy a e550 too, strangly they came out in germany 2006 with the 7 speed gearbox and the newer engine
GT Haus you can get the E550 w211 with the 7 speed but only on the RWD models
A Benz with blown out suspension, you cant even turn the wheels 2 inches without it rubbing against the inner fender . Any other low riding car can be adjusted with wood blocks or shims under the front tires.

A) strutmasters is trash arnott is the only company that makes a legit conv kit. B) Why do people not realize, suspension is not only struts. That suspension was designed to govern important specs. Thats why its built like a swiss watch. Enjoy replacing your ball joints ever 20k miles
