Great video! It's nice to see someone with a more positive take on companion. I understand why they caused so much controversy and I know the mechanic was busted...but personally I adore the mechanic. The flavor is great, the card designs are awesome, and I love the puzzle they build while deck building. Hopefully one day we can see a take on this where it can be the fun option it was meant to be, not a game warping mechanic.
I hope they make a return someday too! I think with some more time to balance them, they're could be a fantastic addition to the game, but they are incrediblyyyyy hard to balance
Thanks for this video. I know some about mechanicflavor of Companions but never thought about deckbuilding restriction ties to compromises. Eye opening
Hearing the lore behind the keyword is interesting, as I havent seen anything about it before. WOTC almost entirely deleting the story from the game after WAR had tons of casualties in the process
Thanks for the great question! "711.4a. While a double-faced card is outside the game or in a zone other than the battlefield or stack, it has only the characteristics of its front face." This means that if the front face is a creature, it will fulfill the requirement for having a deck of only creatures. Another side note related to that: "903.4d. The back face of a double-faced card (see rule 711) is included when determining a card's color identity. This is an exception to rule 711.4a." So if the front face is a creature and the both faces fulfill the color identity restriction, you could run it in a deck of all creatures. I agree. Companion is a mechanic that has the potential to become a fun yet strong mechanic without breaking stuff up. I'm pretty sure in the future, Companion will be a loved mechanic among all.
So I can build a normal 60 card deck with an additional companion who I can pay the mana cost of to put him on my hand where I can play hik as a normal creature? Right? If not please correct because I have 4 companions and I want to build some decks with them.
It depends on the specifics of the companion itself! As long as it doesn't break the rules of the companion itself or the banned and restricted list, you can have 1 copy as your companion and up to 3 within your deck. A Legacy deck with Lurrus of the Dream Den for example WOULDN'T work because it would break BOTH of those rules. But a deck with Keruga, the Macrosage as a companion and 3 in the deck WOULD work because it it's CMC is > 3 and it's not banned or restricted.
@@mtgexplainers Makes sense since Lurrus is a 3 Mana creature which breaks his rules. But why isn't he allowed in a Legacy deck? Is it because he is banned im not so sure.
Yes! They can be a part of the 99 or run as the commander as well. Using them as a companion is really difficult in commander, but they're great cards for other uses.
A meme is a little bit different than a joke! I did see it absolutely CRUSH in Standard before Spark Double rotated and there was the infamous legacy mill deck built around it too
@@mtgexplainers right now my favorite thing is the modern deck that just uses gyruda as a nuts ramp payoff. Why get Titan when you can get A 6/6 Aaaand Titan?
I still think the community was just being stupid and overreacted hard with companions they where strong sure but we didn't get enough time to learn to counter them
Lurrus basically gives you a free black lotus every turn in Vintage. Turn one: black lotus, sac, play lurrus, bring black lotus back

Great video! I’m fairly new to magic so it’s always nice to hear the history behind changes like companion

I'm glad that they're bringing it back so strongly with Kaldheim !
Cool concept. I hope they don't let it die but expand it every now and then
Did someone say [[Keruga, The Macrosage]]?
👌😔👀💦💦💦🌶️🥵
Obosh is my commander and I love him, he's so powerful :)
So, if one of my cards is a flip, one side artifact, one side creature, can I just say it's a creature only to fulfill the companion restrictions?
Thanks for the great question!

@@sammoss226 Yup yup! He's banned in Legacy.
So can you put them in a commanderdeck without useing the Companion thing?

Hadn't heard of that one, great suggestion!
First!
