    With all the research on plant-based diets ‘out there’, I’m still amazed that folks still ask where we get our protein. I’m 58, have been plant-based for over 13 years and I’m the healthiest member of my family - who all eat meat, by the way - by a long mile. Thanks for sharing your bubbly personality and your journey!

    Most of these are incomplete proteins, meaning they do not have all of the essential amino acids to build muscle. You need to pair these with other types of protein to make them complete so that the body can then use/synthesise the protein for collagen/skin/hair/muscle (build and repair), etc. for example, beans/legumes and grains make a complete protein, so beans on toast is actually a good meal in terms of being a complete protein; also hummus and pitta…. Beans and seeds also make a complete protein; also nuts/seeds and whole grains, eg peanut butter on toast… The key to making these proteins valuable for the body to use them is to make them complete proteins by pairing them with a food that contains the missing amino acids. I’m a personal trainer that specialises in diet and nutrition so I felt compelled to share this to help people who are going plant-based.

      Do your research. You’re quoting old and outdated nonsense. There is no such thing as “complete” or “incomplete” protein. We need amino acids and they are more freely available to assimilate from plants than from animal flesh.

      The concept that we need to eat so-called complementary proteins together (for example, rice and beans) to make up for their relative shortfalls was refuted decades ago. The myths that plant proteins are incomplete, aren’t as good as animal proteins, or need to be combined with other proteins at meals have all been dismissed by the nutrition community decades ago, but many evidently didn’t get the memo.

      You need another course on nutrition by Nimai and hundreds of vegans who look and feel way better than most carnis.
      Absolutely disagree with your hypothesis about plant based diet. That's archaic take in food . Even Arnold's views say that if anyone tells you plant based is incomplete food, REJECT THAT IDEA!
      and I am talking from LIVING ON THIS DIET...and what it has DONE TO MY BODY, HORMONES, AND MIND.
      As a fitness trainer, I'd humbly recommend to stay abreast with what hundreds of experts and saying and the mind boggling results of plant based diet rather than using dated ideas..

      All 22 proteinogenic amino acids MUST be present in a food in order for your body to synthesise/use it to build muscle. If only ONE is missing, your body cannot use it to make protein and will catabolise/break down muscle in order to get what it needs. Apart from tofu, all the so-called proteins listed here are incomplete proteins, meaning they are missing certain amino acids to build protein. You will need to pair them with proteins that have those missing amino acids if you want to build muscle. For example: beans + seeds; beans + grains (think beans on toast, peanut butter on toast, hummus and pitta, etc.). When it comes to building muscle, nutrition is key. Using muscle only builds muscle if you are consuming enough high-quality protein. Sorry to burst your bubble 🫧

    No way should you replace eggs with anything. Eggs are natures Super Food. Packed with protein, vitamins, minerals, very good fats and a whole load more such as Choline (read up on this, you'll be amazed). Also the cholesterol association with eggs is complete misinformation. One of the best sources if a total and balanced protein, around 6g per egg.

    • @blahblahblah2699

      I agree. Also you have to collect eggs if you keep chickens or you will end up overrun, not just with hens but with lots of cockerels as well and they fight each other.
      Speaking from experience here as we lived in the countryside for years and everyone kept chickens, if you didn’t get all the eggs in it could be a real problem.
      It’s such a daft idea to not eat eggs.

    For me protein sources you listed cause gas and bloating and aren’t recommended on the anti inflammatory diet.
    Soy has a lot of side effects too.
    I don’t see any problem with certain meats, meat has broken down minerals that the body can absorb easily.
    Googled- grass fed cows -
    Pasture feeding has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the nutrient profile of milk, increasing the content of some beneficial nutrients such as Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, vaccenic acid, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), while reducing the levels of Omega-6 fatty acids and palmitic acid.

    Just wondering. Is there not something that needs to be combined with legumes to make them a complete protein?

    • @tammyjoma
      @tammyjoma 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just a note it has been disproven that combining a grain with a legume makes a complete protein. My understanding is each food has different measures of the food-based, protein amino acids.

    • @evangelinatsadiosou6962
      @evangelinatsadiosou6962 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Adding grains or seeds to legumes adds the missing amino acids from the legumes so that all 22 essential amino acids are present in order for the body to synthesise/use protein.

    • @tammyjoma
      @tammyjoma 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to clarify my answer, there are 9 essential acids we need to get from foods. The old belief that we needed to combine a protein and a grain at a meal to get a complete protein has been determined to be a ‘myth’. Eating grains with beans can help provide more of the various amino acids we need each day, but they don’t always have to be eaten at the same time. Eating a variety of grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables and if desired, nuts & seeds, can provide all of the nine amino acids we derive from food. A free app like Cronometer can help show specifically how much protein amino acids (& vitamins & minerals) we’re getting each day. (Just a note, too, that athletes and those building muscle may want to more carefully combine foods at meals to supply enough complete protein.) I also like Dr. Gregor’s daily dozen as a general guideline, although nothing has to be so regimented. It does take some effort to eat a variety of foods to get enough nutrition, in my experience. I also find Dr. Esselstyn’s heart-healthy diet helpful which adds more greens, but my family is prone to high cholesterol, so that may factor in. Best wishes to all. 🙂

Veggies totally messed up my digestion, indigestion kept me awake most nights, insomnia led to depression.. One day i ate 2 grass fed and grass finished beef burgers and i had the best 24 hours of my life! Felt energized and happy. Started researching carnivore and there are thousands of testimonials from former vegans who reversed all of their health problems by going carnivore and have been so for many years. It seems for many people the carnivore diet is healing. As a vegetarian there’s a lot of missing information here. Just saying “ blah blah has this much protein” is not really helpful. Like the sunflower seeds- in 100 grams there are over 500 calories, 51 grams of FAT and 21 grams of carbs. If that’s all you are going eat- well… but obviously you can’t down 100 grams of sunflower seeds and call it good. Good nutrition information takes everything into consideration. I guess I’m tired of self- proclaimed experts on TH-cam making these kinds of videos because it’s half of the information you really need to be wholly healthy. Do some research and give complete information or please don’t give nutrition advice. Just because you feel good eating like this doesn’t mean you should be giving advice to others. You can cause more harm than good. People think everyone on TH-cam is an expert.

    Misleading info here.
    All of those protein percentages for grains and legumes refer to the dry product.
    Once they are soaked and cooked, they only contain about 7% protein, rather than e.g. 19%.
    They therefore don't compare favourably to chicken, as this is 25% in its normal high moisture form.
    I love all these legumes too, but let's be honest!
    Hummus is actually very low in protein! It has a high water content.

    And it’s as easy as that. The nuts and seeds are pricey in the volumes I eat them 😋. I was a vegetarian but I have reverted to eating anything. I still eat like a vegetarian for most of the month but I eat chicken sometimes. I take Flaxseed aka Linseed for ablution benefits mainly. One big negative about the nuts and seeds is that they are highly fattening-good fat but highly highly calorific. If you can’t do high intensity workouts then huge discipline is required in the quantities.

      Yeah, how well I know! I suck at "moderation" so find it easier to avoid certain foods than try to resist the temptation. As for vegetarianism... it's important we do our best for our health and of course that of the animals and the planet, but not everyone wants to be religious about how we eat. I firmly believe if you wouldn't or couldn't personally kill, gut, and butcher an animal yourself, you have no right eating it... just because you let someone else do the dirty work. I grew up on the coastline, and fishing, foraging clams, mussels, snails, crabs, etc. was how our families supplemented our groceries and budgets. I'm not justifying it but I've made peace with the fact that I will still occasionally (once a month or so) allow and give thanks for the privilege of indulging in some sort of seafood.

    Thanks for suggesting how to eat more vegetables that contain protein. I need to highlight your comparisons are great at 100 g but you’re comparing 100g chicken to a 100 g of dry split yellow beans. When split peas are cooked this is vastly different to 100 g of chicken and as your other commentators have made that we have naturally complete proteins and incomplete proteins that require combining to ensure that there they contain all the essential amino acids this can be done throughout the day preferably. I’m a Dietitian practising in a community for the last 17 years and eating largely a plant based diet. Just need to be clearer when making comparisons , although it’s understood you’re just saying what you eat.
    BTW love your hair !!
    But thanks for looking at the veggies that contain protein. We need to eat more of them.

      Grams measure weight. Teaspoons measure volume. One pound, 16 ounces, is 454 grams. 100 Grams is 3.5 ounces by weight. The amount of space that equals will vary depending on the density and weight of each food item. An inexpensive digital kitchen scale is a useful tool.

The other downside is chemicals and eating a lot of indigestible fiber that makes your digestive system work overtime.
