When I play guitar, my pinky rests on the body, beneath the strings, just like yours. If I’m to believe the many guitar tutorials on TH-cam, that would be detrimental to learning to play fast. And then I come across your videos, where you’re playing Alan Holdsworth, no less. There’s still hope :) Great videos, by the way.
One of my all-time favorite short motifs of Allan's occurs at 1:40-1:42 in the timeline. Thank you for delivering it with grace and fire! Derryl you always do impeccable playing. Thank you for sharing!!!
One of my favorite Holdsworth solos that I've gone back to listen to over and over and over. Honestly, that REH performance is perhaps one of his best. You absolutely nailed it, but that's hardly surprising at this point. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You Derryl, your work is so stunning this just builds and builds on it. Just WOW for the up close presentation of the Foundry and the title and the timing is EPIC ! Yeah, if WE had the LOOKING GLASS, WE the People would be immediately victorious. The people are not the issue its the infiltrated control factions. The People ?, We Love each other, sea to shining sea and we celebrate with music and food amongst one another. Duh. You playing, it just shines man, please don't stop coming to the people. . . WE LOVE YOU Derryl !
Amazing! (as usual) Seriously, great work & attention to detail. I’m still baffled by the lines that start on higher strings/lower positions & work their way down to lower strings/higher positions. (0:26 and 0:46)
Derryl : It's wild that you popped up on here at this moment, as I had just listened yesterday to your "Visions and Dreams CD , which I hadn't heard for a while. It's hard to find someone who has a grasp of the Allan Holdsworth idiom quite like you do. I'll have to dig out my old REH video of Allan and watch his version and yours back-to-back. Bravo !
Incredible as always Derryl. That has to be one of the best Looking Glass solos Allan ever did. Long time fan here, I bought Visions and Dreams back in 2002 when it came out. Tell Me is one of my all time favourite songs.
The tune Visions and Dreams is my homage to Frank and Allan and was inspired by their work on Truth in Shredding. Tell Me was like a mix of Greg Howe, Shawn Lane, and Allan.
I generally start phrase by phrase after I have listened to the solo enough to sing or play it in my head. Once I have the whole solo memorized, I'll start playing with the track at about 70 percent tempo to get the timing and nuances down. Then I'll gradually increase the tempo over time. Looking Glass took me about 3 weeks to memorize and work up to tempo. The hardest Holdsworth solo was the Devil Take The Hindmost Live 1992 in Koln Germany. That took me 6 weeks.
This is a patch I made. I'm using the "Dying Rain" Dual Rectifier amp from the Mesa Boogie Reference package in ToneX, The Mesa Boogie Road King Black cab from the Mesa Boogie 2 in Amplitube. My signal is wet, dry, wet, three amp/cab set up. I sell my patches. Shoot me an email if you're interested. Just remember, you will need the Mesa Boogie Reference Package in ToneX and the Mesa Boogie 2 package in Amplitube. dgabel70@gmail.com
The majority of this as you know is legato ( hammer-ons and pull-offs ) but I would say it's a mix of economy and alternate picking. Generally, the way I pick is when there is an even number of notes going in one direction, I use alternate picking. When there is an odd number of notes going in one direction, I'll use economy picking. There are exceptions though and this is when I want something articulated in a certain way and the timing.
Like 10 years ago I didn't think i'd ever hear people figuring this stuff out so I'm going to ask you since you did being I saw Allan a bunch of times and are predominantly am a rock player is this exclusive to the Jazz language or something unique to Allan Holdsworth , the Late great Larry Corryell once told me in person that he thought Allan reminded him of Coltrane on guitar .
Nice playing Derryl! Tone is great. Do you remember you sold the Powertab "book" on your website for like $10 many years ago? I still have it, after like 5 computers later, was just practicing the 313313 arpeggios the other day.
Yes, I retired that ebook and now I just sell all the documentation from my courses as the new ebook. It's $97. derrylgabel.net/product/the-derryl-gabel-guitar-technique-ebook-2020/

@@derrylgabel Thank you Derryl, awesome reply! I wasn't aware of this Tonex pack. From the Tonex website, it appears to be a capture from an early Dual Rectifier. I'm wondering if it is a RevC which Allan used (orange channel), or possibly a RevD. Once again thank you for your reply. All the best.

close my eyes and it's Alan!
Been watching him for 16 years The G.O.A.T.🎉🎉🎉
Holy cow! Just amazing! I am not going to touch my guitar for a couple of weeks and quietly sob in a roadside ditch.
This solo by Allan is a masterpiece. Perfectly executed in every nuance.
Outstanding.
Thank you!
Awesome playing, what a technique you have Sir 👌🏼
Thank you kindly!
Masterful performance and as always so inspiring. I’m sure Holdsworth is somewhere hearing this thinking “was that me”.

I have no words!!! I cried! This is FANTASTIC!!!
Can't beat a bit of the amazing Tony Williams, who featured on this song from the album Atavachron. He's my favourite!
Allan in Vein!!!! Great
Smooth like silk.

AH was Shawn Lane' hero. I would love to hear someone as awesome as you cover a SL tune!
There's a guitarist named Richard Marchbank who covered some Shawn tunes. He's probably the fastest guitarist alive.
