  • January in Piemonte. The second week at our Italian Farmstead. We get a visit from Isis’ mother, who lives in Italy. We crack open an “ancient” bottle of wine. We show you the inside of some of our outbuildings. We do a few chores around the property. We explore the south-east edge of our land. And we say goodbye to the farmstead for a few months.

    You have found a gem of a place. Wish you joy and happiness in your beautiful new home.

    The January sunsets and winter colours in the landscape are appealing to my artisitc eye, but the way you two work carefully together appeals to my heart. The photography (and editing) are also very artistic. I am eager to return and follow your story further tomorrow.

    Congratulations on your Farmstead truly she is a Beauty. You understand she will take time and work to bring her back to life and you have wonderfully demonstrated the methodological approach of prioritizing those tasks. You have shown her that you care by lovingly taking the time to introduce yourself in a nuanced manner to preserve her integrity. Your farmstead, land, animals, plant life all feel your presence. The postive peaceful energy you have brought her will be reciprocated in kind.
    Blessings for Bounty to both of You and to all of the Farmstead.
    *the birds excited chirping in the background was natures way of telling the good news to all.

It's really great how you colour along on the drawing as you tour the property. I've seen property tours where they haven't done that, which eventually causes the viewer to get lost, and then feel disconnected. So thanks for showing that respect!

      @storiesfromthecascina  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hoi en welkom! zeker weten dat de oude gebouwen ouder zijn, maar hoe oud is lastig te zeggen. We vermoeden intussen minimaal gebouwd ca. 1850. Het kapelletje is een verhaal apart - waarschijnlijk is het een laat-middeleeuwse constructie die verplaatst is (elders afgebroken en op deze plek opnieuw gebouwd). Wij zijn qua opleiding acheologe en historicus dus we gaan zeker nog verder op zoek naar de geschiedenis van het huis.

    Hi. Thanks for sharing your journey. I love the way you guide us through on paper and then show us the building. It helps a lot. I’m not an expert on tree pruning but I think you should trim the branches closer to the main branch. This will help the tree heal over better so I’ve heard.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll end up taking away the entire tree (we're bringing a chainsaw in the next video ;-) This tree is a European ash, they grow to 40 meters tall and that would cause so many problems in this spot.

    You did a Great job, many more videos to come, it is Lovely, Are you going to have Solar, or wind generator??? The view is Amazing, your property is spectacular, I once lived in a cabin for 7 1/2 years with no electricity or running water, inside the cabin, burn firewood, for heat, a Big garden for fresh food, it was really The Best Time of my Life, No modern day distractions, ( No radio, television, computer, or cell phone). I have to say it got me soo in Touch with my Spirituality, and my Creative Imagination

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lori! We are exploring both solar and wind energy - gas is going to be mostly a temporary solution. Since we have 8 hectares of forest it also makes sense to look into wood as a source of energy/heating. And yes, a slower paced life, close to nature, the seasons and the cycle of life gives so much meaning to our existence indeed.

    Thank you for sharing your adventure! What a beautiful property, so full of potential. I am living vicariously through you, Martijn, and Not Useless Yet while I wait for my dual Italian citizenship to be recognized and figure out a way to be a "digital nomad" until I retire in 5-7 years. I read "Under the Tuscan Sun" twenty years ago and have dreamed of purchasing and renovating a long-abandoned but structurally sound property like yours, full of old furniture, tools, and memorabilia. My great-grandparents emigrated in 1903 from a hill town in Sicily, and my dream is to one day purchase a property there and split my time between there and the US.

I'm not sure if there's a difference between bottled wine and when it's in a barrel in terms of how well it keeps.

    A beautiful setting, a lucky find - the old red! Please think carefully about hacking down semi-mature trees! Once down it takes many years to replace and leaves are a natural aspect of farms, trees etc. Greeny from NZ

      @storiesfromthecascina  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky find indeed! We don't take cutting down trees lightly ;-) but having an ash tree that can easily reach 40m grow about half a metre distance from a building... that can only cause problems. we'll plant something smaller in it's place, maybe a lilac tree or a fruit tree.

    There is a special relationship that can develop between a person and a place that is rural, unlike in an urban situation. It is one of becoming related to the sky, trees, the soil, the climate and the wildlife.
    I moved to a rural environment that was very wild unlike in Europe where everything is so ancient and settled. The Olympic peninsula of Washington state on the edge of the National Forest and Park is quite different and an unknown place to much of the world. It is so different from the town that I had previously lived in. It is an adventure in living to be awakened by coyotes in the morning, to see the bald eagles soaring over the Bay, and to be surrounded by the verdant evergreen forests which are punctuated by the red bark of madrona trees. I love the life adventure and feeling closer to nature even if it is frightening at times to be near cougars and bears. In contrast to the larger animals there are the two different species of hummingbirds which are such a delight to experience with their buzzing. Sadly, I know that that experience will never be yours in Europe since they only exist in the Americas.
    But you can experience the ice covered mountains. In your case the Alps in my case the Olympic mountains. There is a beauty here of experiencing the sky which in your video I can see that you experience too.
    You have entered into a new life adventure. I hope that you enjoy it in a special way that will be an expansion of your life in new ways and imaginations that can only be known in dreams.

      Hi Michael! Thanks for sharing your story :-) In terms of wild-life we have deer, wild boar, hares, foxes, badger, marmot, beaver and occasionally wolves. It will never be the same as your part of the US but by European standards it's not bad. (Apparently there have been some sightings of vultures too, I just learned)

      @@storiesfromthecascina Are there eagles? They are so magnificent as they soar so gracefully in the air. Sometimes I hear the young ones who make such a distinctive squeaky sound demanding to be fed in the early Spring.
      I love Italy and have traveled there some years ago. I hope that you have some more discussion about its distinctive culture and people.

    Nice property and nice job. Hope to see many more videos. For cutting small branches of the tree I suggest You to buy a "coltellaccio" (large knife, machete), instead of using the hand saw, it will be more efficient and fast, but You need to pay attention not to put hand or nails near it or it will cut it. Congratulation from Treviso province, north-east of Italy.

      ciao Luca! Grazie per il tuo commento. sono andato in una piccola tana di coniglio e ho scoperto di un coltello chiamato roncola. risulta che ne abbiamo circa 5 in casa nostra. vediamo se riusciamo ancora a farne buon uso!

    Место с красивыми видами! Но берегите супругу, чтобы не надорваться от работы и не перегореть. К тому же от настроения жены и зависит весь микроклимат в доме! Так что пусть она занимается тем, что ей приятно и не сложно делать по дому!
    Удачи вам!

    Good job! you guys. Maybe invest in a small tractor to help you move heavy items around the farm. Something like a weed whacker or weedeater, as we call it in the US, would be a good addition to help with grounds maintenance.

    There is a modern version of the bow saw for pruning, it’s called a reciprocating saw and you use a bow saw blade in it. Just easier. I’m sure you will be buying cordless tools, so pick your brand
