  • Tullus Hostilius was the polar opposite to his predecessor in that he abandoned the gods and relished in war. He showed no mercy to his enemies and tore traitors limb from limb. Literally.

I think Hostilius was a aggressive yet overall a normal guy. He agreed to have a fair fight, he didn't betrayed his allies but was betrayed himself. He punished the guy who betrayed him.

You must remember that Rome during the kings (753 - 509 BC) was a far cry from the city of the Emperors (27 BC - 476 AD). It was more likely a small Village made of mud huts and the Romans were no better than the contemporary Celtic and Germanic Warriors of Northern Europe. So I count Romans as a barbarian nation too.

He seemed like a war hungry and ambitious person but reasonable, otherwise he would've not agreed to a pact with albans, absorbed them and spared a temple of their city. He could also have an atheistic view of the gods or just too prideful to worship them.

the artwork reminds me of Carlo Pedersoli (or as he was known "Bud Spencer") an italian actor with a series of succesful action/comedy movies. I wonder whether the artist actually took inspiration from him.

I think Hostilius and Pompilius are supposed to be seen as extremes that must be avoided: While Numa was absorbed in his own mysticism, Tullius believed he could do everything by himself without the benevolence of the gods. The truth is, no matter how mighty and powerful someone is, we are never completely masters of our fate and must accept that we can't control everything. It could also be a reminder of our mortality, and that the greatness of youth is fleeting.
