  • This is our Group Reaction & Review to MULAN. In this movie, we see Mulan is a responsible young woman, seen as a fearless warrior, leader, and beloved role model among her people, both men, and women. Nevertheless, she is also fun-loving and optimistic, especially when seen with Shang, with whom she had developed a strong, romantic relationship by the start of the second film.

The way the emperor just walks away will never not be funny.
The fact that Shan Yu was the least misogynistic character is hilarious to me. Apparently in the Hun culture, strong women are recognized, there have been female generals and what not. Thats why Shan Yu wasn't shocked at her being a woman, he just said "the solider from the mountain"

I have to say I find this movie a far better representation of women's issues than the remake. She's a normal girl not some super powered flawless mary sue and she has to run around at the end of the film trying to get someone to listen to her for a bit and being dismissed just because she's a girl. However she earns their respect and its a nice if probably unintended touch that the barbarians reaction is just "the soldier from the mountain" he doesn't care that she's a girl just that she's the one responsible for stopping him.

I don't mind the superpower angle, I guess? It was more about her attitude; live-action Mulan seemed to join the army moreso out of rebellion than for selfless reasons.

@@OpticalSorcerer I think it bothered me for a number of reasons. First Disney made a huge deal in the lead up about it being more realistic as their reason for removing Mushu then we get witches, superhuman martial arts and a phoenix so that felt like double speak. Second and more importantly it felt disrespectful to the source material (Chinese source material not animated film) as the whole point of Mulan was her being an ordinary girl who did extraordinary things through hard work and effort rather than some supernatural gift. Third it made her feel flat as she was better than everyone else around her to the point they added in a sister to mess up during the match making scene so it wasn't actually Mulan's fault she just got blamed for it.
I do agree with you that she didn't really feel like she was doing it for her family so much as for herself but I can rant for quite awhile about my issues with the remake. I just felt the animated one did a better represenation of a normal girls struggles and what they can obtain if they apply themselves rather than the "Do you have superhuman Chi? No then go away you're useless." message in the remake.

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@liamwarner5749 I could be WAAAY off but I think when they said "more realistic," they meant more accurate to the culture--which, like you said, they didn't do. It frustrates me that the director said rumors of it not beong a musical were false and they were still deliberating it, only to drop the music because the film was about a girl going to war and she didn't know how to incorporate the music--but she would if she could. Kinda feels like she was the wrong person for the job, then. It reminds me of how the writer for Raya said they didn't make it a musical because it would take all the seriousness out of the film (despite the fact that they had a significant amount of comedy in there anyway).
As someone who is a BIG fan of superpowers and desperately wants more Disney films with superpowered protagonists (Encanto trolled me, lol), this was executed poorly. Saying that Mulan had an innate talent for being in the army could've been a very ppwerful message concerning gender roles, and even seeing her train and hone her chi/qi could've been a fun journey taking from Chinese fantasy and wuxia films to make something mystical yet authentic. But Mulan's power was naturally controlled (except for it being dunbed down due to her lie) and completely random. Throwing in magical powers deserves some lore building.
And of course, removing Shang and Mushu will always frustrate me. TLM remake seems like it'll respect the source material more, and I hope Hercules is the same. If we're getting a bunch of remakes, I'm gonna have HIGH standards.

    FUN FACTS:
First detail: It’s well known that Mushu (for some reason) could not wake the Great Stone Dragon. Remember that there’s a scene earlier with Mulan at the statue, where she makes the decision to leave. There are many images of dragons in the following scenes with Mulan preparing to leave to protect her father. It’s believed the reason the Great Stone Dragon couldn’t wake up was because IT WAS ALREADY AWAKE AND WAS OFF TO PROTECT THE FAMILY (Mulan)
24:34 Remember! The two weights represent DISCIPLINE and STRENGTH, but you NEED BOTH to reach the arrow. Everyone kept climbing with the weights separated, but once Mulan used BOTH, she then succeeded.
32:07 notice that the first target to get hit was SHEN (the leader of the group). The archers then aimed at the canons with fire arrows, purposefully trying to destroy them. Afterwards, once everyone stopped firing their canons and were down to one, Shan Yu and his army went for a full cavalry charge downhill with absolutely NO FEAR of artillery fire. Needless to say, this ambush was really thought through with the intention of victory. The plan didn’t account for potential avalanches though.
ANOTHER DETAIL: Remember Mulan singing, “When will my reflection show who I am inside.” There was a scene you didn’t show with Mulan previously around 33:36 looking at the REFLECTION of her sword, which reflected a MOUNTAIN back at her.
45:21 Actually, Mulan being a woman probably wasn’t that surprising for Shan Yu. Historically speaking, the Huns would allow women to fight as warriors too, so Mulan’s gender probably had nothing to do with Shan Yu’s reaction.

    Fun facts
Po (the biggest guy) was actually a monk as he says traditional chants while "calming" the black eye guy. So when they said "one man from every family " they dont care what man/age/or vows of non violence.
It was historically accurate that any woman found trying to impersonate a soldier or just sneeking into an army camp would be killed
Horses have aways been seen as status (because they are hard to feed and care for) so the common farmers/merchants would not have much more then a plow/cart horse at best (which is what this army group is made up of). mulans father was a farmer made famous for his acts in the last war, so he was probably gifted with a war horse (special training is needed to ensure they wont run away from the fight) and probably breed Khan(mulans horse) and trained it to ensure more breeding as they would get more money that way. (I hope this makes sense)
And the emperor never bows. I think its a "if i show respect to someone, others will see me as weak and try to kill me" thing (but they already did or thought they had assassination attempts on their lives)

I liked in the moment when she revealed she was "the soldier from the mountain" Shang Yu wasn't annoyed by her being a woman. In fact huns didn't mind if you were man or woman, they only care if you were a great warrior. So, he was actually the only one who didn't see her down, unworthy or less, he only see an opponent, an enemy, the one who stole his victory. The villain was the only one who respect her as the great warrior she was since the beginning.

Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female. The Huns have female soldiers who fight just as well as the men do, if not better.

Despite how the other males in the movie act, Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female.
Mongolians were surprisingly some of the most progressive people internally for the time, and had several women that were leaders/warlords.
It's why he didn't seem surprised by her gender and still referred to her as "The Soldier." He was just surprised that it was the same person, since he didn't recognize her at first.

@@hebeyuet9314 Well I'm Native American too so that's a big part of it. But similarly to Mulan, they're both different from the typical princess story. Also the animation is beautiful.

@@katwebbxo That's pretty cool. I personally haven't seen the movie myself but I've seen a lot of criticism online towards the movie's depiction of Native Americans. But I'm glad you like it. Also yeah I gotta agree the animation is stunning from the clips I've seen.

    • @katwebbxo
      @katwebbxo ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@hebeyuet9314 Yeah, I know a lot of people have an issue with the historical inaccuracies. But I think it's fine to enjoy it for the story itself as long as you know most of it is fictitious. Personally, I don't have an issue with the way the Natives are depicted. Any mentioning of stereotypes is done intentionally to show how they were viewed by the Europeans back then. So it all serves a larger purpose. I definitely recommend watching it sometime. 🙂

A lesson from Mulan: there are different types of strength. She didn't use brute force, she was very subtle and smart, doing things differently, her own way. She was herself all the time, even when she was pretending to be a man. She didn't try to act like she was the best man ever.

38:25 relax, every country in the world was like this at the time. Life was hard for everyone, men and women till late 20th century; life expectancy was really low, people died from so many causes, to live in an invasion free society is a recent luxury I'm grateful for. Back then honoring your family and doing your duty was a matter of life and death, today we can mess up and restart, pressure is less.

    About military drafts --
in the US, men from 18-25 have to register with the government. If a draft is called for military action, then something called the Selective Service System will randomly pull names from those registered. Right now, the military is all volunteer and the draft is used in emergencies like times of war. As far as I remember, the only reason you can decline being drafted is for being a conscientious objector, but even then you can be posted in non-combat roles like hospital work.

3:27 Its a metaphor guys 😅 Its like saying “Dog is a Man’s best friend” … House pets are considered family more so when raised from birth, all the animals my family raised and/or adopted were part of our family 100%, they became adoptive siblings and we’re an American family. So, yeah!

Anyone else find it kind of unsettling how the only one who isn't sexist is the villain? He doesn't say man from the mountains, he specifies soldier. Still acknowledging her as a soldier despite the fact that she's in a dress now. He's not holding back at all from trying to kill her or anything

Conscription is actually fairly common in the World. I know Denmark's had conscription for forever, though it's highly debated if it should continue. Denmark is not even at war and before Russia's attack on Ukraine, no one thought war was even a real threat since the Cold War and Soviet's disbanding. Currently, it is used as a way to have a reserve army... like... _if_ war broke out, there would be a large amount of men with the necessary training to step up.
Women are not conscribed but that is a more... complicated topic.
