To also be fair the games also establish that in Metro 2033 you're supposed to choose the bad ending (destroy the Botanical Gardens) and in Metro Last Light you are meant to get the good ending because if you do not get the good ending Artyom doesn't survive D2. Nor would he survive Novosibirks (Dead City) in the finale of Metro Exodus as it was the Dark Ones who showed Miller where to find Artyom.

And you easily believed into that?
Why then if player hasn't done any of Captain's requests you would automatically get the ending where Sam goes to USA. Giving automatically "good" ending for nothing, eh? Something wrong here, don't you think? May be because it's just working name of the files. If you scan soundtrack of the game, you will see that most of the tracks are not named by their proper name as well too, for example.
When the developers make such stories where you can't easily say what's "right" or "wrong", you would barely get the proper answer what is "good". Cause no good/bad decisions here. Just choices and consequences - and that's it.
Only if delevolopers gives interview about that and adding what their team considered to be canon ending or smth like that.
In Sam's story all the choice is up to the player.
As this story contains(though it should be presented better) the main theme "the person i wants to be" vs "the person i used to be".

I always wondered : The power factions in Moscow firmly believe that the Soviet Union had been hit far worse in the nuclear exchange of 2013 than NATO countries were, right ? Thats why they kept silent, pretending Moscow was dead as they feared renewed nuclear strikes by an enemy still absolutely capable to do so. They even feared that the country was at least partially occupied by NATO. They must have had at least some solid evidence for that. Then why is a missile sub potentionally still carrying hundreds of nuclear warheads allowed to enter and just sit in the harbor of Vladivostok, for decades, without getting nuked as soon as it was discovered on satellite imagery ? If remnants of the Soviet military, like the recon base at the Caspian Sea were still capable of satellite reconnaissance...then a much less devastated NATO must have this capability and more aswell. They cannot know if the sub is still armed, nor who is or will be in control of it. Why do they accept this massive threat without acting against it ? Maybe there is a cease fire in effect, which nobody in Moscow knows about ? I hope Dmitry Glukhovsky will give us answers at some point. :-)

@@TheShadowFox1 pirate flag also represents denial of authority and complete independence. One thing is clear, Tom is a man of his word. He could easily kill Sam or simply leave him behind. At no point in story he was portrayed as a bad guy. Village thrived under his rule, he treated people fairly well, if you listen to dialogues in the Market at the beginning. He could easily be like Baron or Silantiy in the main game, but he wasn't. I actually believe that he genuenly wants to rebuild the world as it was, because it's simply good for buisness to have many "thriving" colonies. Captain himself many times says that he is kinda OK with Tom, and it's Klim who bothers him.
Also, it's completely possible and even likely, that there are dozens of functioning submarines and warships left in the world, and who knows who owns them. So having one at least neutral guy with power like this is kinda good thing.

@@kakhakheviashvili6365 "complete independence" in dead world. Independence from what?
It's bad ending. Black Flag means that Tom started use sub to murder people and rob ships. In the cut scene, you can see a burning ship.
And Sam in this ending justifies the killing of people and the use of nuclear weapons with his ghostly dream of meeting his father.
He calls the world a corpse, which can no longer be resurrected, which can no longer be helped. And so you can do whatever you want. But this idea contradicts the entire Metro series, where the idea is that the world will not die, that you cannot continue to wage war, that you cannot continue to destroy each other. But this is exactly what the submarine is doing.
Note, he says that he had friends in Moscow, although he was a stranger to them, and now when he met Tom he became a real stranger without friends.
Then the question arises why he went home at all? A dream is a dream, but only his dream is really not feasible. His father is one hundred percent dead, and all the people to whom he was close and dear are now on Lake Baikal. In America, no one needs him and knows no one. It is clear that he will never meet his father, either in the first or in the second endings. But in the second, he acted as a Spartan, he saved people that would be terrorized by this submarine in the future. He still lives with the ghostly idea of meeting his father, but his hands are not stained with blood.

I like that the DLC doesnt have a clear-cut good or bad ending, but I still think that destroying the sub is better. Think about it. In the ending where they get to San Fransico, Sam calls the world a corpse. There's nothing left to save, and no reason to work for something better. Doesnt that entirely go against the lessons of the main game? The whole story of the main game is that the world is *not* dead, and that it *is* worth saving. If Sam goes to San Fransico, Miller (and maybe Artyom) died for nothing.
And what about Tom? Do you really think he fully understands the gravity of wielding nukes? These are the weapons that ended the world, and he's waving them around as a show of force. He was an arms dealer before the war, he already doesnt value human life. Klim might be responsible for the atrocities Tom's faction committed, but Tom still signed off on it all and profited from it regardless. Even without using the nukes, whats stopping Tom from becoming the next Baron? Not much. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and what little conscience Tom has will be eroded away eventually. If Sam lets Tom go, the problems that caused the Last War will persist, and things will only get worse. The Captain, Miller, and Klebnikov all understood that.

I hope they'll make another DLC or another sequel where, depending on the ending you choose, Sam's story will continue.
There are some games where if you'll just keep the data of your game, you'll be able to continue where you left off. Or if it's not applicable, then default new game will be continuation for blowing up the sub. Once completed, then an alternative new game option will be available for the alternative ending in Sam's Story.
For the blowing up the sub: Sam will continue his journey looking for another way home and will eventually meet his old guys back again and this time seeing Artyom's face and him talking. Then when he gets back to America, he'll discover that his dad was already in the grave. Died because similar to Russia, factions of greedy group are fighting and taking resources to innocent people. In the end, he will be successful killing the primary faction/kingpin but will also die because of fatal wounds. Cutscene where in his funeral, he'll be honored a heroic soldier with gun salute.
For not blowing up the sub: Will just continue to be in America, a revelation what happened to Ed, the captain. Is he still alive and what did Tom do to him when they discovered the bomb despite the switch is no longer with Sam? This time, he'll meet his dad but will die along the way because of some fight as mentioned. Then Ed will continue to live in America but still holding a grudge against Tom. And Tom, being a "businessman", will sell his nuclear warheads or will have a battle about it and Sam and Ed will be fighting them. Same ending but Ed will live in the end and Sam will die. Sam will still have his funeral with gun salute, and with Ed in the crowd giving respect to him.
Edit: I just finished the previous game Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light. The story of the Dark Ones wasn't mentioned in this game, Metro Exodus.

So just to be clear, with the "good" ending, if Sam just turned around and walked away when he first met the Captain, the Captain, all of Tom and Klim's men, and all the bandits would still be alive, and the sub would be no greater threat. So Sam just killed several hundred people for no reason. And that's the "moral" choice?

I choose 2nd Option For Sam To Get Home . That why we worked so damn hard in the beginning of Sam's story . Was to Get Him HOME TO FIND HIS FATHER🇺🇸

2nd ending is better simply because it's sunny. And you are standing proud. 1st is just death and cold.

well realistically, theres clearly other boats around, so if he was able to get his hands on enough fuel, food, and a couple people for help he could theoretically cross the sea. I mean, the colonists got to America on sailboats for pete's sake

Actually, if you pay attention to the story halfway to the game you'll hear a story about a mysterious plane flying through the sky on the vladivoska on the south, one of the guy's names Kozch (Sniper) had seen it while on the sea as huge plane (AC-130 perhaps) run-pass above them and nobody believes him. If you think of Sam not having to push the button I think he will for me but that does not mean his options are zero in, after all in the ending he did say He will find a way and the south might where he goes and story for another sequel.

How in the world the good ending is the bad one, and the bad one isn't the good one?
So in good ending you kill Tom, who trusted you, and an entire crew, just because the captain is paranoid because of another nuclear war in an already damned world, which tbh, it wouldn't make any sense to nuke an already nuked world, but in bad ending you will have all alive, and you will even go home.
    Bad ending = good ending.
