A nobody? In Australia, Heal was a sporting icon and minor celebrity known for his tell-it-like-it-is attitude. He played in 4 Olympics, 2 NBA seasons, was the premiere point-guard in the Australian league for over a decade. Down here, he's more recognised than Luc Longley. The NBA was only just starting to open up for international players in the 90s. I suspect if Heal was 25 now, he'd have got the full NBA experience he deserved. One of the greatest LONG range shooters I've ever seen.

Shane Heal was ahead of his time. The Aussie Steph Curry - before Steph Curry was a thing! Just look at that crazy step back at 6 minutes...

Awesome for posting this. Australia played alot better against the Dream Team in the 1996 Olympics semi-finals. They were able to stay with the USA for half of the game, largely thanks to Gaze and Heal. But Reggie Miller was able to lock up Gaze in the 2nd half and the USA won by 20.
Barkely was interviewed by a Australian television network and said some very nice things about the Australian team after the sem-final.

He won an NBA contract with the T-Wolves not long after this game. Played a season or two. Never got the minutes to make an impact. Spent the bulk of his career playing in Australian National Basketball League. One of the best LONG distance shooters I've ever seen. Aussie sporting legend.

This video doesn't show Bradtke blocking olajuwon and then Malone in succession then gaze throwing it to heal for a 3 pointer.

I remember watching this game and thinking how great Shane Heal was.
Stockton at the end of the game said "You need more than just a 3 point shot to make it in the NBA" . At the time I thought Stockton was just being a prick.
Heal did play in the NBA and so did Gaze because they both could shoot the lights out but their play making skills were just not NBA standard.
Also, (and this is probably the main thing) Heal didn't have the speed to guard NBA point guards and Gaze could never guard anyone.
In the end Stockton was right.

    • @brettm73
      @brettm73 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** When they let the NBA players play internationally, it was the first time the best of the NBA played on one team competitively. The "exhibition" was to see how severely they could destroy other teams (they didn't hold back!) That's where the excitement and jingoism came from. It's actually was disgraceful and I'm surprised by the commentator when he's talking about Heal verbally retaliating against Charles Barkley after Heal got bumped hard twice (I'm sure Heal thought he deserved the foul, which he DID!) Had it not been an exhibition game, Barkley would have received a technical for that chest bump. Another antic like that would have got him kicked out of the game.
I think the current sports culture in the US is less jingoistic as we see the community in a much more international light (ironically, the "Dream Team" years boosted the competitiveness of basketball on the international stage.) Although there's still a little of that (we'd punch our grandma's if they play for the other team) mentality. It's less of a jingoistic thing. :)
Being a Jazz fan, you always have a chip ob your shoulder. Many NBA fans and players can be disparaging on Utah in general (less a bigotry issue and more of small-marketing phenomenon in this age I would think.) Jazz fans are known to be extremely belligerent during games. It's kind of the fun of being at Jazz game. Also, we're really loyal (most of us) to our players. We already LOVE Dante and he hasn't even played a regular season game! Also, hoping Motum makes the team (was fun to watch in Summer League.) By the way, DON'T LET THEM WATCH THIS VIDEO!!! HAHAHA.
Surprised John dissed Heal though. He was usually known for being a nice guy (although so incredibly competitive he was known for playing dirty on the floor.) He leads the NBA all-time in steals and assists for a reason I guess.

I'm pretty sure he meant that the '96 Games were in Atlanta. Not this exhibition game.

IMO Dream Team III was the best of all Dream Teams. Every player on the roster was in his prime and the bigs on this team are unrivaled in basketball history.

Are you seriously suggesting there is a team better than Jordan, Magic, Bird, Ewing, Robinson, Drexler, Malone, Barkley, Pippen, Stockton? Legends of the sport each and every one of them.

That was in Salt Lake on the Delta Center floor (Jazz homer here.) I don't remember it for some reason (even though this was the year Stock and Malone went to the NBA finals against the Bulls.) Makes me feel a little embarrassed for USA basketball where that was an exhibition game. Supposed to be a friendly but Charles Barkley and Karl Malone never knew the definition of friendly apparently. :)
I love Karl, but it's no small fact that everyone hated playing against him (even his own teammates in practice) because they usually had their ample share of pain. :) Even Enes Kanter (3rd year Jazz player from Turkey) commented on Malone in his 50's being rough in the paint when Karl was mentoring him!
Yeah, players don't really get away with the bumps anymore. It was okay to clobber each other in the NBA back then. Detroit kinda made a name for themselves doing it. I think they are just more subtle about it now. :)

Why would you expect Barkley and Malone to turn it off? Those guys are world class competitors, that's how they play. If MJ or Bird were there, they'd have it turned up all game...no apologies.
Barkley was a good guy to Heal after the game, he can respect what that guy did.

Charles Barkley was quoted as saying that this particular USA team(There was only ONE Dream Team) didn't really get along and that guys were complaining about playing time...Pretty intriguing...I mean they dominated everybody! I'd put this team over the 2012 version!

name one of the boomers that was working part time.. 96 was the peak of basketball in Australia. The min pay for a player is 50k a year these days, and thats with crowds of only 2.5k a game.

If they using the white fiba 3 point line then heal hit 10x3s. All through that commentary I kept thinking they were off on the count. He had five at halftime ffs and according to them had only his 6th after his third triple of the 2nd half

He means really play. Dude got cut basically because of poor defense & lack of opportunity. I know he only shot 27% but its impossible for a streak shooter to shoot a high % while avging 2 shots per gm. Today he'd have a lot more opportunity w/the way defense is played today. He could come off the bench for the Heat & just run around shooting open jumpers off of Bron's & Wade's kick outs. He'd avg 9ppg on 45% shooting easily.

Im pretty sure he did play when he was younger at barcelona and then again in 2000 when they hosted the olympics...i think he had injured himself surfing or something during this time..or he had just been traded to Chicago and they didnt want him getting hurt or something. But this couldve been the best team they ever fielded with Heal, Gaze Longley had he played.
