    Throw some stock rims on it, and cheap used tires(in the rear). It'll drift. Don't need more power, especially when you're still learning. I learned with an AE86, then a KA NA 240. It's all about the technique & seat time to get a feel for the weight transfer, and getting used to the speed you need to follow through around the corner. Also knowing when to yank that e-brake. You'll get there! Just keep at it. :)

    Seat time would be the most valuable, a 285 is a lot of tyre to break loose so yes more power needed. I would say keep it N/A for now but with a tune and a smaller tyre until you get comfortable in it. Drifting a turbo setup is difficult as you need to stay in boost to keep the power up.

  • @dethbox32
    @dethbox32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Back when I used to host and instruct grassroots practice events for people of all skill levels, the beginners that we’re struggling used to always have the same response as you. They always thought they needed more power. Reality is, you need to learn how to make an underpowered car work before getting into something with more power. The driving skills and knowledge of car setup that you will acquire learning in a low powered car, will do nothing but benefit you in the long run.
    I remember the first track day I ever went to, being a kid right out of high school, driving my first 240sx with a stock single cam KA that only had coil overs and a welded diff, and I thought the exact same thing... I needed more power....
    And then I found out that the guy that was driving better than everybody else, that was sticking it to the door of all of the higher powered turbo cars, had a car with exactly what my car had (which was realistically 105whp on a good day).
    *I’m pretty sure his name was Eric Castro if there is anyone from the early 2000’s-2009 SoCal drift scene here in the comments....
    Start by lowering the vehicles grip level. But don’t just lower rear grip, you have to lower front grip too. That’s a big mistake that people make. When you just lower rear grip and leave the front end gripped up, the car is going to want to rotate too fast around the front end causing you to constantly spin out.
    Next, you have to use vehicle speed and momentum to get the vehicle through whatever corner or combination of corners you are attempting. Low powered cars don’t pick up speed through corners, they lose it, so you have to enter with more speed than you need will need by the end of the corner to still be sideways (which means that you will have to initiate the drift with a technique that doesn’t cause the vehicle to slow down like a handbrake pull would. My favorite was always a full throttle run up where my initiation point was at about 1000rpm less than limiter, stay flat out, use a faint/Scandinavian flick with a clutch kick at turn in).
    You then have to continue to stay full throttle at all times, using angle to scrub speed if it’s needed. And any time you you feel the engine starting to bog down because it’s gripping up, just kick the clutch to get the tires broken loose again and back into power.
    It will teach you how to use the vehicles angle and momentum to navigate through a course instead of relying on the throttle and handbrake to cover your mistakes. It will teach you real car control and commitment

    • @michaelbannan9972
      @michaelbannan9972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      More power would make it a whole lot easier to break these tires and it would allow him to keep drifting into 2nd and maybe even 3rd gear. The motor just doesn't have enough to get a high enough wheel speed to get a deep angle with it. As soon as he shifts into 2nd gear, it grips right up. He needs to be able to break the tires.

    Don't be embarrassed trying something new, its inspiring to people who would want to get into motorsports like what you do and seemed like you were getting the hang of it. If I can drift my volvo 240 NA, you can do it with the k block and might be limited by the gear ratios or wide tires. Should already be a 4.10 diff, with the cars stock engine making 228hp and needed a final drive swap to really stay NA. Use older tires, over inflate them alittle to reduce the contact pad and add some camber/toe to the front because when you were turned it was + camber while you were moving too easily forward. Sitting should be -camber, half lock at 30mph+ should be closer to 0 and should have some resistance in the front wheels going forward. That alignment is meant for street driving and fuel economy. Older wheel bearings will give more resistance then you have now, can get the same effect from adding very little toe that will do alot and would will notice it wanting oversteer more. Remember to do one change at a time so you can dial it back while knowing what you did to get that effect. I know this is BoostedBoiz, may want to shave the head down .40-.60 to raise compression to get some low end torque. 9.7:1 is good for low to mid rage boost and thats on a fresh engine. If your compression is under 165psi or close to it, that's the power loss and being some random junkyard engine I doubt it was treated nice. But I'm sure it hasn't seen anything yet and will get those big jobs on new builds. Kinda want to know what it dynos atm

      That instant torque would help a lot with drifting too! Wouldn't have to fight turbo lag or trying to keep the turbo boosted. Kyle needs to switch up the different types of boost too, too many turbo k swapped cars. A twin screw blower build would be so sick!

    • @codmphildeeze4202
      @codmphildeeze4202 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could not agree more, something around 15/20 lbs boost on tap instant would probably be all that it needs to do the job. Some drift stuff would help like an angle kit.

    • @ZedTee77
      @ZedTee77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A supercharger will be 5 grand, an eBay turbo will be 500. A small turbo will light off quick and stay in boost easier, all u see on TH-cam is big turbo stuff. Everyone will be surprised on how driveable a small turbo would be on it

Keep practising corners up until the grip goes away then you'll get it easy, less handbrake the better. You'll get it Kyle. Glad to see you out having fun finally doing some slides. Much love brother Yee Yee!

Get comfortable with the car being sideways and controlling it in circles like you were doing then pick up the pace.
