I think the History of Ygo and progression series are doing wonders for ppl who just either never played old formats or simply forgot and just shows how fun they can be.

Swagkage's Yugioh meta documentary is what got me into Yugioh a few months ago. After that, I jumped into Duel Links and have been playing a lot of Magician of Chaos, which fueled me to start building physical decks. I've currently got a few structure decks (my favorite so far being a somewhat modified Shaddoll Showdown structure deck) and a hand-made Magician of Chaos budget deck that's based off of a deck-list i found online.

Both those Cimo series really have done it for me. Made me realize how much I vastly prefer old YuGiOh before we hit this
"stop or break my board" meta where games are often decided within the first couple turns.
I do like Modern YuGiOh for what it is but the power creep has really made the game less fun for me.

well thats cause modern yugioh isnt fun. its just flashy like a casino. you get roped in by the lights and the short attention span, (hence the special summons out the ass)
older yugioh makes you think about what you're doing every turn, instead of just how to get the best first turn.

Its funny cause one of the things that "drew" me to Yu-gi-oh is the art style. I used to draw the characters on the cards all day. I remember, at one point, we were really poor and couldnt afford Yu-Gi-Oh cards but me and my little brother loved playing so I took the time to cut out and draw 2 decks for me and my brother to use. I was a really big Yu-Gi-Oh fan and knew most the card effects by heart so I wrote out all the text as well. Then, I built a homemade battle arena out of beds and boxes for us and it was time to d-d d-d d-duel!

I think the reason the og anime is so ingrained in people's memory is the method through which we all saw it.
Saturday morning cartoons and weekday reruns. Ask any educator, the best way to embed information into someone's head is repetition. We watched the same episodes of the old show constantly. Its why duelist Kingdom is so ingrained in our memories because we watched it the first time. Then we watched It again while waiting for battle city episodes. Then we watched it and battle city again while waiting for new episodes of Waking the Dragons. The Kaibacorp Grand Prix and Pharoah's memory arc don't stick as well because we didn't get that repetition.
Nowadays, we binge through an entire season of anime in a day, and forget about it until the next season comes to crunchyroll or netflix. It doesn't stick.
Its not the writing being better or worse. Its not nostalgia goggles. Its the lack of repetition.

For me, I played from the very start, through 2009 when I left home for college. It was around that time when synchro strategies were all the rage, with TeleDAD having just left its mark a few months prior. In school, I haven’t really thought about the game at all until I was at Walmart one day and saw the Marik structure deck, and was completely floored by the decklist! Lava Golem? Mirror Force? Allure of Darkness? Gravekeepers? Magical Stone Excavation? I immediately bought three copies of it. But even then, I never had anyone to play with in school, so I never did much with it. It was in senior year when I started dabbling in online dueling through Dueling Network. I think XYZ monsters were just coming out around this time. But ultimately I’d stop playing that too, and I haven’t thought about the game much since, completely bypassing pendulums and links.
Fast forward to 2021, and I stumble across one of my old trade binders, and got incredibly nostalgic about all the cards I was finding. So I then set out on a quest to dig through my attic and my basement to find all my old cards, and started going through them. I couldn’t believe what I had forgotten I had. Including a really strong Extra deck, a fully-functioning Gravekeepers deck, and an Ultimate Rare 1st edition Solemn Warning! It’s also around this time that I started researching Goat format, a way to seriously scratch that yugioh itch that’s being bubbling up while also keeping the rules and games both simple and familiar. And here I am now, considering investing in several Goat format cards!

What I want most out of yugioh is more format support. My favorite time of Yugioh was the beginning of the synchro era. The decks weren't as insanely fast as they are now (where you see first turns taking 10 or so minutes and people spilling out 3/4ths of their deck and extra deck in a single turn to make unbeatable boards), but it also wasn't super slow/bricky/topdecky like early yugioh. I feel it was such a nice middle ground and I really want to be able to play in that sort of format again, but outside of playing with some weird ass ruleset me and my 1 friend made up every now and then, I don't even play yugioh at all anymore and it's sad. I miss this game. I miss the memories I made in 2008 to 2011. I miss the decks and the pacing from that era. But it's now lost to time. Even now in 2021 we really only have Standard, GOAT, and Duel Links (the latter two barely being supported at all). So my only option to play the decks I like in the format I like is just playing my one friend, with the same decks, over and over again (and we both feel like it would be a waste to spend a bunch of money on these cards just to play with each other every now and again).

For me, I grew up on classic Yugioh, before the full rules were available and playing with cards I bought at a flea market (probably counterfeit) with my friend, using the rules from the show...ooh boy that was rough..and then playing with the ACTUAL rules and it being a big thing among certain groups in my high school..you had the MTG players and the Yugioh players, trading for cards..all that. My memory though sticks most heavy with E-Heroes from the GX series..it's the one I invested THE most time into, even using the manga cards once they started releasing Judai/Jaden's cards he used in the manga instead of just the anime stuff. One of my friends in high school had a hellacious Relinquished deck cause he combined it with Ground Collapse and Gravity Bind..if he got set up right with that before you could stop him, you might as well give up back in the day..2 Ground Collapses to leave you with 1 SINGLE monster zone, and a Gravity Bind to stop you from attacking except with weak monsters and then just taking your monster over and over again for his Relinquished..I'm having horror flashbacks of that set up...I actually prefer the simpler times of how duels went then..now I need a magnifying glass to read a list of effects...

  • @danieltaylor4185
    @danieltaylor4185 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There's probably a combination of different things feeding into this wave of Yugioh Collectors. For starters, many players resent the current state of the game - the power creep, the expensive cards, the oppressive effects that dominate the meta, the new card art style... it all adds up, and a lot of people don't like any of these things. So, seeing a familiar card like a Dark Magician or a Blue-Eyes White Dragon might remind them of a time where they enjoyed the art style and were probably blissfully unaware of the game's balance issues that were always present. Many children grew up watching the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City arcs of the anime, and as a result Yugi and Kaiba are incredibly popular characters. Even Joey and Pegasus have their fans.
A second factor is the age of people who grew up watching the anime. It was quite popular, and those people are probably in their mid-20's and early-30's by now, which is generally when you get your career going and have enough disposable income to really dump into hobbies like collecting old movies, or restoring cars, or, indeed, collecting classic trading cards and the associated memorabilia.
There was also the Pokemon card boom - they were often seen in the 90's as dueling TCG's for roughly the same demographic and shared a lot of similarities; they both had prominent anime running at the same time featuring very iconic characters and various 4Kids-dub-related memes, as well as having popular games, and less popular manga adaptations. Essentially, they were both huge multimedia projects that were related to a trading card game. So, it's likely that even if you only had Yugioh Cards, you'd probably be well aware that Pokemon cards existed, so the news that Pokemon cards are worth something now would probably remind you of your days playing Yugioh, even if you've moved on to a different game like Magic or found a new hobby altogether.
EDIT: Also, let's not forget that 2020 and the beginning of 2021 has been a time where scalping has been a hugely popular practice, as unscrupulous as it is. Things that are scarce tend to be more coveted than the same item with the same nostalgic attachments, but when there's a relative abundance of that thing. So, the scalpers buying all the sealed product they can get their grubby hands on probably also is a contributing factor.

TPCi releases a "shiny set" (basically purely a collector set) every so often that is almost identical to GFTP. It's 90% reprints just with alternate artwork that rotates when the original card rotates. Shining Legends, Hidden Fates and Shining Fates were all made like this. As a player, they rarely have new cards that make sense in the meta so we don't care too much other than having more shit for max rarity. It sounds like GFTP is basically a shiny Pokemon set for YGO.

I honestly think channels like Team APS are the reason there's a boom in nostalgia but also partially because Sevens is lukewarm to some/not Yugioh enough on the surface so they don't even bother to look under the hood. There's also some people who I believe are just fed up with the power creep in general ruining what used to be at least a fun time with friends.

My number 1 want is an anime adaptation of the original manga that remains faithful to the intent of the first story, by focusing on other games as well as the TCG. But when they eventually animate the TCG around Death-T and Duelist Kingdom, they rework all the duels to be accurate to real world rules. Maybe by giving some characters their retrain cards. Its a long shot, but I love the original manga so much I can't help but dream.

Nostalgia beats everything. In every ascpect of human's lives, not just card games. Nothing beats those old feelings of excitement and Konami knows this well. The many reprints of those glorious cards of the past is a very good thing since many people now (like myself) can get their hands to beautiful looking cards --even if they aren't necessarily 1st edition they still look gorgeous. Some very steep/crazy prices exist and will always exist, since it's a game heavily focused on collection and that's fine, even if i can't afford them. Konami will be making a huge bang with the past cards, I'm having this gut feeling.

I think the reason it is becoming more relevant is because of scalpers and what I call the "seeker hype train." Where people don't really care about collecting or playing, they are in it just for the money and what not. Which sucks because it takes away from people who have always been a fan or new people trying to get into it legitimately. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the original series needs a remake or some kind of stylish way to return to it but make it so that it’s updated and possibly in completely separate timeline that allows for all the new card types (Synchro and Xyz etc) to be incorporated into it.
It would make for a fantastic series and Digimon is kind of pulling out all the stops with their remake of the old show so YuGiOh could definitely learn a few things from it, hopefully in the sense that it doesn’t necessarily HAVE to be western family friendly to really feel a stronger connection with the characters in both the sub AND the dub.

As a grown adult, old school not only brings nostalgia, but it seems more worth my time to invest in bc as an old format, we know that the rules and gameplay are gonna be consistent. The cards stay at the same value in terms of strength of play. So long as you play in the old format, you don't have to worry about power creep and BS rule changes. I can take a break and come back to it and I know things haven't changed drastically while I've been busy with work and life. The current meta is just a bloated, constantly power crept mess. it doesn't seem worth it to invest in a good deck that becomes worthless in just 3 months due to power creep/banlist bc for most adults, 3 months can go by in a blink of an eye.
