It’s not even that the anime style is bad, it’s that Konami’s art direction is either Dragons, Mecha Robots and Waifu bait with a few generic warrior, devil or angel stuff
@@TheBossManBoss319 Maybe if they actually credited the guest artists for the freaking card artwork, we'd see more artstyles and variety. There's an interview with Akina Fujiwara, the artist of Droll & Lockbird and the Charmer and Traptrix monsters, regarding how screwed over these guest artists can get from Konami in terms of recognition and compensation.
Kinda dropped GX but picked it up around it's last dub episode. But what brought me back into YGO, and I also mean collecting and dueling, was when 5Ds came out, and it was also the first time I watched YGO subbed too. 5Ds will always be my favorite series.... But when Zexal came out, dropped it again.... Then I came back when ARC V was close to ending, binge watched it, after 2 weeks, I caught up just in time for it's final episode. Went back to give Zexal another try and enjoyed it. Still not a fan Xyz as well as Pendulum. Sticking with YGO till the end now.
To be real with you, the "pandering" has been LONG overdue. A lot of these newly released cards are over 7-10yrs "too late" to be as impactful as they could've been if they were released during those years. Like that new Mystical Elf re-train....BRO, that should've been marketed the moment Yugi used it in Duelist Kingdom.
honestly the nostalgia is what mainly keeps me into yu-gi-oh me and my friend started with the kaiba and yugi structure deck, me using the yugi one and we just slowly build them up from all the support cards for our aces and just casually play, it's one of my favourite parts about yugioh
:) then you should play Speed Duels get the Speed Duel Battle City box (3x so you have all the cards) and build the decks based on the skills and characters
@@yu-gi-ohheathen Yeah same. I mean I didn't care about Bandit Keith at the time back then but the theme of the heavy metal raiders is badass. Even if they don't make new barrel dragons, a retrain of slot machine or pendulum machine would be awesome
@@dumon4264 I don't have a source myself I mostly remember hearing people at my locals talking about how it's design is based off of something (a super hero I think) and they can't reprint it because of copyright issues thanks to that.
Maybe something like ... NEO BLUE EYES ALTERNATIVE ULTIMATE SOLID WHITE DRAGON SPIRIT negates three times, banishes three backrow, gains 1000 ATK for each card negated or banished by its effect
It doesn’t help that the current meta is complicated even for returning players, and not to mention the objective of the game these days is to basically ensure that your opponent doesn’t get to play Yu-Gi-Oh. I got back into it, but only for collecting
If that's the reason why they're milking DM it's just naive, like bro the game is too complicated and most of those people say "modern ygo is bad, the old days were better". And there are so many weird rulings. Yesterday we had like a 30 minute discussion (maybe even longer) in farfas stream about an interaction between stareater and gale. The question was if stareaters atk. go back to normal if he attacks, because of his unaffected clause. The reason why this was so compliacted is because there is also a ritual beast (apelio) which boosts ritual beasts and a ritual beast fusion which is unaffected and it's atk. go back to normal. In the end we came to the conclusion that apelio has a completely diffrent ruling than gale and farfa had to talk to 2-3 judges to confirm that like WTF? It's a childrens card game btw.
@@bl00by_ This reminds me of The Earthbound Immortals vs The Legendary Fisherman. They both have that can't be attacked if a condition is met. With Fisherman, if you have only him, the attack becomes direct. But from a ruling I remember, the Earthbound's prevent you from attacking.
@@bl00by_ I just think they sped the game up so much, than slowed it down, than sped it back up again added so many new things, the game hardly resembles itself from when I used to play it during the Duel Monsters days. I watch videos because I loved it as a kid and got interested again but it doesn't even LOOK fun, it looks so damn convoluted that I wouldn't ever wanna play it.
@@MagusSin Then dont focus on the meta, you don't have to play like that, just make fun, casual decks that play more slowly like when you used to play and have fun with your friends not worrying about whats competitive, that's something i like to do and it's great fun!
I want a miniseries where each protagonist uses an updated modern version of their deck using every summoning mechanic (maybe not pendulum, leave that for Yuya, maybe)
I've felt this way too, especially when I hear the original duel monsters' voice actors say "I Syncro/XYZs summon a monster" in duel links and seeing in those aforementioned extra deck cards having archetype support for those characters' decks (Like Azure-Eyes/Blue-Eyes Spirit for Kaiba and Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon for Joey). Though I'd want a full blown arc, one thing that I liked about Arc V was seeing what had become of some of the legacy characters from the previous installments. Enough new characters for a while, revisit some of the old ones who started it all, for example showcase the lives of the characters in duel monsters 10 years after the events of darkside of dimensions, when kaiba corp might have developed the new extra-deck summoning methods and it would work since the real life cast members are older, the anime cast's voices sounding older would make sense. And that's just duel monsters, GX, 5Ds, Zexal and the rest can get that treatment/love too.
I dont think it would even be all that bad if they completely rebooted the original anime. I really appreciated DSOD and would love to see 8000 lp duels with each person using new support
This is why as a nostalgic 30-something Yugioh player I loved Speed Duels (especially the Battle City box). Skill cards have the faces of those iconic Yugioh characters in addition to condensed decks with their most iconic cards. The only Yugioh products I really care about anymore honestly (after that, yes, I am now sick of seeing repeat Duel Monsters characters on products).
I mean, what Konami is doing is no different than what Pokemon is doing with rehashing and plastering Kanto Pokemons all over the place. Nostalgia is a big weapon for marketing
I honestly respect it a lot more here than Pokemon, with pokemon while the 3d games have let me down the new pokemon designs are still really cool and interesting and have a lot of that original appeal. With Yugioh I think that when it comes to the cards Takahashi's design sensabilities have aged well but the serious stuff after hasn't. CUTESY modern stuff like dragonmaids and prank kids hold up with modern art to me but stuff like Odd eyes, code talkers, true dracos etc doesn't. it just feels like it lacks something
Legendary duelist sisters of the rose is actually what got me back into yugioh! I was always a huge fan of Mai Valentine when growing up and watching Yugioh. I always would use Harpie lady and Harpie Lady sisters even though they weren’t that good of cards so when they finally got support I was so excited and got back into yugioh to get the new Harpie cards. Getting back into the game as an adult made me appreciate it more and I’ve been playing ever since!
The problem for me is even with the nostalgia pandering it’s still for nothing. The support doesn’t make dark magician or blue eyes competitive . Like not even tier 1 or anything. But the worst part is that the cards that are made for them like dragoon and souls get used in other decks and aren’t limited enough so they’re expensive even if the archetype isn’t top tier
That's what you're not understanding, the nostalgia pandering is for fun. It's not meant to be competitive. Everything doesn't have to be meta related dude.
I honestly agree with this. They go out of there way with the double digit attempts of making the decks good, but they're not even close to comparable to stuff like Eldlich.
Blue Eyes in 2016 was meta. Dark Magician is a fine Rogue deck. You don't need a deck that's tier 1 off the box. You just need them to Top 8 a regional at the bare minimum since majority of people don't play the top top meta.
They aren’t ever going to be meta again and they don’t need to be, the support is literally just for the nostalgia. If konami wanted BEWD or DM to be top-tier, they could do it in 1 set.
To be fair, people “6+” couldn’t play this game if they wanted to with all the rulings XD ‘oh you missed the timing of this!’ Def not the easiest thing to grasp lol
U tried teaching my kids while getting back into it. I had no idea how to explain how to play to an 8 year old and 6 year old. Hell i dont even know how to explain it to adults it's one of those things you just know how to do without knowing how you know how to do it to me
I don’t think there’s any issue with resorting to nostalgia from the previous series. But I do wish they would have some new anime/show that appealed to an older audience.
honestly does the newer anime even appeal to the younger audience? cause its kinda seems like yugioh has an ageing player base. The nostalgia stuff seems like trying to bring people back rather then make new fans
Right I been thinking the same what about us older fans now I'm sure they could pull it off. Make something that will make us want to return to yugioh.
The Duel monsters pandering will only be fine if i get more lunalight support soon. Serenade dance, sabre dancer, and yellow marten are great but i need more cards for my favorite archetype
The pandering helps me get friends into the game; they often have a favorite anime deck from Duel Monsters, and it helps me quickly set them up with a deck as well as (recent) product to buy if they want more - it's great! As a more 'competitive' player though, it irks me. These decks often aren't even rogue tier yet they take multiple products a year. I hope they increase the power level of the nostalgia support to actually help broaden the competitive landscape.
What Konami gets wrong is the price tag on these "nostalgia" decks. It shouldn't cost so much to put together a tier 3 deck. They should be like structure decks with a few cards missing at most to collect.
@RewindBobo Wait you mean the Eternity code Booster box? A booster box isn’t comparable to a structure deck like not even a little bit. Generally All booster boxes are fairly pricey. Structure decks and what not are usually reasonably priced and will have a set card list and try to have cards that work together so you can create a deck, in some cases buying 3 of the same structure deck can let you actually create a somewhat useable deck. A booster box is just a massive box of booster packs with random cards inside from that specific set nothing is guaranteed. You can buy multiple booster boxes and still not get the specific card you’re chasing. Where as a structure deck you get what’s advertised.
@RewindBobo that’s because ETCO was fairly popular if I recall so a lot of places have likely ran out or are running out of stock. Some places will increase the price on a set if they start to run low, especially if it’s a decent set. Again I’m sure not all places do this but quite a few do, my normal go to place does this for better or worse I remember legendary duellists 4 was like $90au for the longest time but when they were finally running low on stock the prices hiked up to like $160 and now you can’t find boxes for that particular set anywhere at all for $90au. So yeah it happens quite a bit. Meaning if you can’t find a set in a store you’ll Need to go online to like eBay, Or other trading card sites where people mark up the prices a lot when a set is getting harder to find. Hell even Toon Chaos last year went from being reasonably priced very early on to ridiculous prices in just a few months because of how popular it was. So yeah that’s likely happened to eternity code now. This won’t happen nearly as bad with less popular sets like chaos impact or rising rampage as even my local place still had a few boxes of them but they still fairly cheap as no one wants them.
Dark Magician costs an arm and a leg to play, almost as much as an actual meta deck, and Blue Eyes can get kinda pricey too. I hate they’re so expensive because they’re kinda cool and I’d like to play them without dropping hundreds for a casual deck
Vanguard spent the last 3 years doing nothing but nonstop nostalgia pandering to the point it became obnoxious, it's a big reason why the new OverDress series has been so refreshing because there's no nostalgia in it. Then the second core booster set gets revealed and they're already shoving nostalgia pandering into it. Getting a big wave of all original and fresh ideas only highlighted more how stale and done to death those nostalgia pandering cards are compared to the new themes.
If Konami hadn't released the Blue Eyes Structure deck, I would have never gotten back from my 5 or 6 year hiatus. ^^ I grew up with my Starter Deck Kaiba and love the fact new Blue-Eyes support made it semi-relevant for a time.
I kinda hate that 2016 and 2017 had DM tins, they spiced it up a little in 2018, and went right back to DM themed in 2019, 2020, and it’s looking like 2021 too Like cmon konami you were so close
Not gonna lie, the Gaia the Dragon Champion retrains got me back into Yu-gi-oh. But yeah, there are a bunch of archetypes out there that could use some support
GX was massive in the day, I wish they kept going with pandering to nostalgia but with GX haha. Imagine if GX main character archetypes got new support every year like DM and blue eyes. hero support, cyber dragon support, and imagine what decks like roid, cyber angel, and freakin koala would/could be like if they were given support like the original duel monsters cards that had entire archetypes created around them.
I wanted to name some other anime archetypes after mentioning those 2 haha, they definitely did better. At least for the early seasons, the supporting cast of the main character were syrus and chumley, I just wonder as a "what if" situation, if roids and koalas, GX in general, got some love in the card game if they could be playable decks
I love anything Yu-Gi-Oh anime. I live dm and love to see new dark magician and blue eyes support. I do like seeing support for other anime characters as thats all i care about. No other archetypes interest me in yugioh unless its from the anime, with very few exceptions
@@rabbittris A boss monster that can be played in every deck that can summon 2 monsters, it also has an Omni negate and built in protection. Oh and it can destroy 2 cards during the controller's turns. Oh I forgot it gains 1k atk for every negate it does. Oh forgot it burns you aswell. If it wasn't for me spending hundreds of pounds on cards like IDP and Shaddoll schism (I play Shaddolls) I would have no real out to it in my main deck. What outs dragoon: Cards that are not budget friendly like IDP KAIJUS DRNM (not really cheap but affordable imo) but you need a follow up. Maybe I'm missing something here but that's all I can think of right now.
@@Realblack_m0nster ok thanks I usually don't play red eyes dragoon in a way to take advantage of all the effects and forgot some of them so yeah red eyes Dragoon is op
I think the Nostaliga phase is an "in-thing" right now. The same thing has happened with Pokemon and PokemonGo pandering to the Kanto series repeatedly to bring people who are familiar with that back, even if it is only temporary. The Nostalgia stuff also helps build a bridge for those who might have not played for a long time to come back to the game with something they're familiar with. I remember trying to come back to Yugioh with what I had and got my butt kicked because all my old cards were useless due to how much the game had changed and I didn't have any connection with all the new mechanics or cards.
I love support for older strategies. If Konami came out and said that all of 2023's products were gonna focus on giving support to less competitive or older strategies support to try and bring them in line with rhe modern meta, I'd be so excited! If anything I moreso hate that new archetypes are constantly created and then immediately forgotten about. We have 100+ archetypes in this game, I think it would be ok to give at least half of the more neglected/unviable strategies some love.
Also I'm just gonna say it. The reason YGO has had a new player problem for the past half a decade or so is because the game has been in an unforgivable state for years. If the existing playerbase wasn't fueled by anime nostalgia or just the investment that comes with being in a community for 10+ years, the game would be dead. No one would forgive another game for being the way YGO has been
I love a lot of decks from the anime (especially from GX despite my profile picture!), but there are so many decks that just don't have enough support or have been power crept into oblivion. Konami has been doing a great job overall with legacy support lately though. so even though my faith in Konami doing good by the players is low, I can always count on awesome new support for old decks! Personally I'm hoping (but not expecting anything) for possible Battlin' Boxer retrains because they are a special kind of out of date!
This year is the 25t aniversary so nostalgia is expected to happen but it wouldn't hurt them to include a card or 2 for a deck that needs support instead of some meme traps that are always toward the endo of the card list
see i joined around the yugioh zexal era so for me the nastolga bait doesnt work to great on me but ngl i do love blue eyes i just wish they would do more zexal and arc v stuff
Got into the game during 5Ds and Zexal. I’ve never really given a damn about DM or BEWD. So good for everyone who grew up with that, but I like seeing the Utopia support and Rose Dragon cards. More of that kind of stuff please! Also Dragoon is symptomatic of the nostalgia attitude leading to absolutely busted cards to satiate people wanting to play their garbage normal monster-based decks competitively ruining the meta for everyone else
Said but yes it's true, if they want to show off their product, gotta feature the characters that many will recognize. Sucks that they get more love but it is what it is. I'll buy anything 5Ds related tho.
My issue with the old school pandering, is that Konami uses it as a crutch to sell inferior products. Take the last Mega Tin. That thing is abysmal in comparison to the one before it. Yet, for some reason you're supposed to be excited, because it's based off the stone tablet from the anime. And comes with the chance to pull some terrible support cards for DM/BEWD out of the packs. Which comes to the real issue: Most legacy support is hot garbage.
It's the dualism of legacy support in konami's eyes. They want to make the legacy support good enough that it can give some semblance of life to an old deck, but not strong enough to actually make the deck viable even locally, because they also need to sell that new set on the horizon. They either need to stop entirely, or accept that sometimes it's fair that some old deck can compete. Otherwise we're just stuck in limbo.
Funny you should say that as I've been pining for some sort of a Duel Monsters continuation as of late, preferably in the form of a single player JRPG console game. Even though 5D'S is overall my favorite series and era, I'd still really love to see a DM sequel of sort but not as a movie or even a show. I feel a game exploring the post DSOD world without the Pharaoh or Kaiba would be great, especially to give a chance to all the DM side character the chance to shine and actually update their decks to match the current meta.
Konami releases duel monsters sets because of the demand for it, the ghost rare dark magician is now going for over 1000 bucks because of the insane demand for it and the battle city box already hit a 100% price increase in only 6 months (released at $30, now sells for $60) and was hard to get one for a good price at launch.
Tbh, the nostalgia content is mainly for reeling in returning players. And even still, Speed Duels tried to sell Rex and Weevil decks, but those products cluttered shelves at half price (while the Yugi and Kaiba starter decks are now 8x the price)
I mean weevil and mako got cards in legendary duelist sets already, and dinosaurs are already pretty stacked so there probably isn't much they can do for Rex. I'd be down for some Paradox brother support though
@@afish.fish4 outside of the skills they didn’t offer anything new that helped or contributed to they’re decks, plus those characters don’t have enough support to begin with; but if they get more support to expand on weevils parasite/insect queen strategy and rex’s Dino beat down with a dragon boss they might get some people interested
Personally I think if Konami wants to get more of the younger generations into Yugioh they need to stop marketing Duel Monsters so much and start making the newer anime's be the main focus; because lets be honest. How much of the new generation is familier with Yugi and the gang?; probably not as many as those who are familier with Yuma, Yuya, Yusaku, possibly even Yusei. If Konami marketed Yugioh with each new series instead of Duel Monsters all the time I feel they would probably pull in more new players from this generation, and we need that so much.
In My Opinion Nostalgic Sells that's why it seems we are Constantly being Bombarded with Reboots Remakes and what have you in recant years on every single Form of Media that you could think of Including Toys. Like The Power Rangers with them Mainly Focusing on the Original MMPR (Mighty Morphn Power Rangers) Series. But I personally don't really mind but I do wish they did Dial It Down just a little. Because when it comes to things from my childhood and Nostalgia, I'm Starting to feel a little Fatigue for it with Yu Gi Oh Included. Right Now I'm at the point where I'm sort of losing that Excitement over things from my childhood being rereleased redone or whatever which includes announcements, but at the same time I understand why it's done. In addition to my reason above it's also a nice way to get New Fans or just simply New People coming in to the IP in this Case Yu Gi Oh Not only a Good Place to start, but also to show them where the IP Started and what IP was back when it first started.
Syrus definitely inherits some of Zane's cards after they put him in the hospital. So whilst Zane is iconic for Cyber Dragons (Well, Cyberdark), Syrus did definitely play them.
@@crewie94 Yeah, plus to me that was a very memorable duel. And we are getting a Structure deck in the TCG that's based around Cyber Dragon & Cyberdarks working together so it's fitting to tell that to people if they didn't know.
Yeah then they go to locals and their opponent plays shaddoll invoked. No, but seriously most of those wouldn't come back into the game. They would just play with their old cards at home and this is not what konami wants. Konami wants active players who buy products and go to tournaments. Btw. aren't those people the ones who allways say "modern ygo is bad and complicated, the old days were better"? How do you want to get those players back into the game? An anime won't be enough.
@@bl00by_ I think if they treated it like the live action duels we see at events with the VA's, using current strats or the new legacy support with XYZ, Pend, and Link then it may promote the old fans to learn the game. Something about the new protags is not grabbing our current youth, I think we need our own Ash Ketchum.
@@Roddan96 The current youth has no intrest in card games. And that's the thing, konami would have to create some sort of hype to get them to play. So you would need big influencers like streamers, youtubers, etc. to promote/play the game. And now come up with an idea which attracts young people to the game, but remember it's the most powercreept and complicated card game which exists. So have fun getting young people to learn this thing and not getting f*cked by stuff like geist, guru or even shaddoll, zoo, d-link etc. And no an anime isn't solving the problem, remember the kids you want are playing fortnite, watch twitch/netflix/youtube and are fans from logan paul, they aren't intrested in an anime, this time has allready passed.
If you think about it konami is smart for the way they have been bringing back old cards and strategies. When i hear new players coming back to the game they usually aren't looking to build the newest decks or archetypes, they want to buy the decks they played as a kid or decks their favorite anime character played. It's nice when a returning player can build a deck they are fond of and if there is a chance that old deck has been revitalized in some way then thats better for everyone.
The good thing is, it is tamed here compared to things like pokemon, PR\super sentai and transformers all center on to much g1 or the 1st 151 mons getting wayyyyyyy to much attention looking at you Charizard etc. It gets old seeing the same old stuff but for yu-gi-oh it hasn't hit that point (aside from BEWD ugh) that extreme yet unless I'm out of the loop again. Just need better damn support for some of the old cards because of power creep.
They need to finish the anime series seasons that were not completed in english. And they need to dub any episode that was not aired in english just to finish out storylines. Like how Jack Atlas got a new lv12 dragon for his deck that nobody had any information on. Oh wait, he got it when he fulfilled his destiny as the warrior of the crimson dragon. But it was so "religiously" based that it couldn't be aired in the US.
Duel monster era is not problem it's just too much DM and Blue eyes support when they have others to pull from that era like Flameswordsman , gate Guardian etr.
Pls no more Joey based support, it's literally inconsistent trash, cause the guy's gimmick was relying on luck and shoving in random cards with 0 synergyin his excuse for a deck. Literally the only successful nostalgia Red-Eyes cards were the fusions with Yugi's cards. Gate Guardian retrains would be neat though
Agree with u 100%. These older decks is what keeps alot of older players still interested in Yugioh. I remember a few years ago i was going to quit because I though Konami forgot about older decks particularly in the DM era. Then the same day Clash of Rebellion was announced with the new Red-Eyes Support and almost instantly my love for game was restored.
@@hybridgxvlogs5343 You can, you just need the will to do it. And that's the thing most people don't want to learn a card game over weeks just to play it. They want a game they can pick up, learn the basics in maybe 1-2 hours and play.
I feel that the reason they do sooo much dark magician, blue eyes, etc. Support is to make them more viable against todays cards...sure they wont be meta but you dont have to fear the days where its 2 sacrifices for 1 2500 atk monster in a day where it takes 45 min., half your deck, and the endless patience of your opponent for 1 turn to fill the field with 3000+ monsters with relative ease
Honestly I kinda liked the last two Legendary Decks cause of the diversity of characters that we got like for example with Legendary Dragons Decks we got Yugi with his Dark Magician cards and the Atlantian Dragons, Kaiser Ryo with Cyber Dragons, and Yuya with his Odd-Eyes stuff and with the Legendary Heroes Decks we got Edo with his D-Heroes, Team Ragnarok with the Nordic Gods, and Yuto with his Phantom Knights
I do not play Yu-Gi-Oh, but I do love Trading Card Games. As someone with very small knowledge about the meta and how the game evolved from when I played it, back in 2003, I have to say that your content is really good. You really have a love for the game and enjoy sharing your knowledge about it. Just wanted to say kudos for that and hope you guys keep it going
Well… I think it’s less that the new Protagonists aren’t as memorable - it’s partly that new Yugioh shows are not getting as much marketing and as much of a push as Yugioh and GX. Also Konami seems to love a lot of DM characters but only focusing on the main characters of the other series (if that… Zexal and Arc-V havent really seen any of their characters on YGO product in a while… except with Synchro Storm.) Although I would like if the Tins could be more expansive then just DM era
Casual players are still the vast majority of players of any TCG. Konami has much more card equity in the classic cards than anything else, which will be unfortunate to hear for the vast majority of current active players. Expect a continued regular flow of nostalgia based products over the next couple years.
I don’t mind it as long as other decks get support for jaden, yusei, Yuma, Yuya if they get some more support that will be good but I do want to see more things base around the other characters
I just want alternate art/rarity bumps of cards. The charmers (not familiar possessed) the actual 500/1500 old charmers, have secret rare printings in Japan. I bought the set of 6 Japanese secrets, and they’re beautiful. Even if the cards aren’t good. That’s the kind of nostalgia is what I want for the TCG.
The familiar possessed have secret rare versions of the original art, AND secret rare printings of the alternate art. (Only in Japan) Their spells have secret rare printings too. We want more of this kind of stuff.
Nostalgia pandering is everywhere and it's really annoying. Digimon being one of the worst offenders. It's one thing if they do something new with it, but if they just throw out the old stuff without any thought or care about the execution, that's where it gets contrived and annoying.
I've been playing duel links and when they added even more blue eyes support it was everywhere, people were going insane trying to find creative ways to beat blue eyes. And once everyone got decks that were able to beat it people started getting smarter. They found ways to make creative and unorthodox ways to build decks and now it feels like everyone got better than blue eyes
I've always advocated for support for legacy archetypes or retrains of iconic monsters. Things like Desperado Barrel Dragon, Metamorphosed Insect Queen, Armed Dragon Thunder, Roses and the like. I'm always hyped for those kinds of reveals. Those are some of the first decks I consider when looking at things to build. The upcoming Egyptian God Structures in the TCG have my eye just to see how it's handled along with the newer God support. That's why side sets like Sisters of the Rose and Duelist of the Whirlwind are exciting to me. But I do not have that same excitement for DM or Blue-Eyes since I know it's basically guaranteed (but not always good). TBH Considering picking up one of those to always know support is on the horizon.
I knew nothing about Yusaku or the Vrains universe until a friend at my church helped me get back into Yu-Gi-Oh and showed me Link Summoning - which I also knew nothing about! I guess I was always an OG guy myself
!!! love your take videos Paul, but one blaring sign you don’t mention as often about this late era of yugioh can actually be found on every card printed since late 2019 2020. KAZUKI TAKAHASHI isn’t printed on any of these new products, its STUDIO DICE now (the entity behind yugioh manga and anime) which is why we are getting this nostalgic products. it makes me wonder tho if STUDIO will try to print all the KT cards again...I hope not (good for value bad for new progress)
I wish Umbral Horrors and malicevorous got some support along with No. 96 Dark mist as well as its choas form. They can swarm the field quickly to summon good monsters, but... they don't have much else going for them.
The new structures, legendary duelist and the legacy support we’ve received like Karakuri, Fabled, Armed Dragons is the type of legacy support I want. Older neglected decks are being given new cards that actually benefit them and let them be at least playable in the modern game. The “you remember when this happened in the anime? Isn’t our protagonist so cool!” support is not what I want to see. The kings court stuff looked really interesting when it was retrains of the arcana knight monsters, then they added in a bunch of random “remember when yugi did this?” cards
I think it'd be really interesting if they remade Duel Monsters but with the modern rules. I'd love everyone in the Egyptian God Card battles to have to slam down all the support cards like Mound of the Bound Creator or all the Ra spells just to be marginally effective while still pretending that they're unbelievably powerful
I'll say that a good thing about Rush Duels and YGO Sevens that pretty much separating the main game from from the anime has help get other older archetypes support. For awhile you basically had to have packs filled with a lot of stuff the anime was showcasing and everything once in awhile they put some older in. Otherwise it was usually something new that built on the new machnic. I also think it's just a time thing. DM is just an easy target for older people getting back into the game or just want a little nostalgia moment. Over the last two years and really recently it seems that GX is getting a lot of that nostalgia love for that gen of kids that grow up with it. I'm sure Konami can capitalize on that with more GX support. Maybe five years down the line they'll be heavy 5Ds love and the cycle will continue.
I'm fine with a new dark magician or blue eyes card every now and then, it get's bad when it's constantly jammed down our throats that we hate it. I mean, who wants to see so much support back to back to something so fast? I haven't really noticed a huge flood of Hero support recently and so we are not as likely to groan at that deck getting supported. I think that it could be toned back a bit so that it's not as annoying to see "Yet another useless dark magician card that doesn't support x archetype" Nostalgia pandering is a thing that should be done in moderation, not in the heaps we're getting.
Honestly whenever I get play yugioh all of my decks are majority nostalgia decks. I literally play dark magician and hero’s as my go to decks. The fact that dark magician is getting new support sometime this fall is getting me soooo hyped. I only wish summon skull got its own deck it really shocks me that it dosn’t.
You know what needs more support? Chaos. jk but seriously though, I want penguins to get meta relevant cards but it seems any kind of deck/archetype doesn't become relevant unless it has an easy boss monster they can summon that has an omni-negate. Which is just the sad state of affairs for yugioh atm.
Watch Legendary Duelists: Synchro Storm not sell well. Not because the quality of the cards are terrible but because it DOESN'T Have Yami Yugi on the cover but this other guy named... Yugo or somethin'? What is a "Sherry Le Blanc"? Lyrilusc? These... Baby Blackwing lookin' knockoffs? Sometimes, I just feel bad that because your favorite archetypes are not as popular or maybe even niche, you just have to deal with it. I mean I POPPED OFF when Dawn of Majesty revealed new Gusto support (they didn't win the OCG structure deck poll) and it was... Good?! And I'm one of those guys who grew up with DM and all its ups and downs. The nostalgic memories playing with friends at school, going to a locals occasionally... But even I will admit that I tend to roll my eyes at more Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, and even HERO support (I loved Elemental Heroes and it's subsets) Also, shoutout to Payne96 and his never ending journey to get new Volcanic support to this very moment in time!
No, Synchro Storm "might" sell well. Many time, booster packs with good chase cards alone already sell better then nostalgia bait products. And in Synchro Storm, there are many chase cards that could potentially sell...
I think the reason why there's so much disdain for the DM era is because of its "casual bait" appeal and the fact that the year's biggest product (Mega Tins) has focused on that era so much. 2016, 17, 19, 20, 21, and 22 will all be DM tins. 18 was the only exception with Jaden and Yusei. But honestly the side sets and core sets have done a great job at giving other eras love. Each 7s core set has visited a different era and I've really appreciated that. I also wholeheartedly agree that the lack of an anime promoting the show and pulling in new players is a huge weakness. I don't have a solution for this, but I do know that if a DM remaster comes people are going to lose it. 😂
I mean, we have to be grateful that the new series 'Sevens' has its own format different from the official format. If '' Sevens '' had been created for Master Duels, rest assured that all sets would be focused on Sevens archetypes.
i agree with both sides on one hand i grew up till 5ds so i love like every kind of support from dark magician to black wings bu ton the other hand i discorvered "newer" archetypes too mainly through duel links like brotherhood of fire fist, shiranui or noble knights which are really cool themed decks. i just wished konami would more structure decks or legendary decks type products which include the actual good cards for the anime decks so that it wouldnd be that expensive(e.g. dm support from magical hero or like every other hero card)
1:38 KEKW I grew up with 5ds, zexal and arc 5. Ofcourse the most part of the community grew up with DM/GX, but you shouldn't forget that there are allways people who were born after you and saw other stuff. 11:45 I think that konami should slow that nostalgia thing down. It's just annoying to see dm support so often and it's also annoying to see that the mega tins are just DM now. Remember the dragon ruler tins or the bujin/firefist tins? Why don't we get mega tins which are more like this? I mean I get it yugi and kaiba are the face of the game, but that doesn't mean that they should put it on almost every set (I know it's not almost every set, but it feels like that too me).
I just wish for more sets like battles of legend where they dont necessarily focus on old archetypes support but actually print archetypes from the animes that people wanted. The biggest example is the fossils but also Vrains had some really cool anime exclusive archetypes
I want XYZ or Link monsters for Barrel Dragon. Maybe a structure deck based around the monsters. And have a dice based structure deck. Like Battle of the Gamble would be a cool structure deck name. Battle of the Gamble: Flip of Luck and Battle of the Gamble: Roll of Fate
they should make support cards for all my old favorite normal monsters like flame champion, cosmo queen, science soldier, trance, mystical elf and more generic support cards
The nostalgia is the only thing keeping me into Yu-gi-oh I think. I wouldn't mind them toning down Blue Eyes and Dark Magician support though. Would love a new version of Reaper of the Cards and some other notable monsters from DM instead.
Throwbacks are nice but I do think it's a bit oversaturated. But I can't argue if it makes sales though, it's what people want. But as long as fun non-DM era stuff is still around, we're still getting new archtypes and so on I'm fine with it.
Honestly the old stuff is what got me back into Yu-Gi-Oh!
Yes me as well! I have a lot of fond memories of early yugioh sets.
Same.
Yeah I just got back in after 16 years lol
Same i got the legendary boxes in 2017 and thats what got me back into it.
Go play duelinks and speed duels then. Ppl quiting the game cuz of it
Also please bring back some scary looking card art. I’m tired of looking at anime for every card art.
It’s not even that the anime style is bad, it’s that Konami’s art direction is either Dragons, Mecha Robots and Waifu bait with a few generic warrior, devil or angel stuff
@@zyro7756 exactly. It’s not bad. It’s genuinely good art, but it’s all the same. I want some variety.
I agree with this, I especially dislike the new art style for old cards as well, i.e. dark magician and blue eyes
the sorta dark fantasy vibe of early yugioh is dearly missed.
I actually got into the game when 5D'S came out. But GX will always be my favorite series.
Had the exact same experience
I got on yugioh since i was 5 but started playing it in about 10
GX is terrrrrible
Duel Monsters is my favorite series, but GX was my favorite era for playing.

Now the big question is when will Konami create the inevitably broken Blue Eyes Light Dragoon in order to prey even more on nostalgia?
Blue eyes alternative ultimate dragon already has a similar effect to Dragoon.
Maybe something like ...
NEO BLUE EYES ALTERNATIVE ULTIMATE SOLID WHITE DRAGON SPIRIT
negates three times, banishes three backrow, gains 1000 ATK for each card negated or banished by its effect
It requires a blue eye synchro blues eyes fusion and blue eyes ritual to create though.
@@anthonyt4154 Aka a broken custom card, hey wait a minute... that's excatly what dragoon is!
@@bl00by_ haha yes
The Duel Monsters era was the most prominent time in Yugioh, they want people to come back to the game as it's not growing.

Ticked me off not seeing yugi and the other protags in the dimension war it would have been bonds beyond time on steroids
I dont think it would even be all that bad if they completely rebooted the original anime. I really appreciated DSOD and would love to see 8000 lp duels with each person using new support
Bru that would be awsome
This is why as a nostalgic 30-something Yugioh player I loved Speed Duels (especially the Battle City box). Skill cards have the faces of those iconic Yugioh characters in addition to condensed decks with their most iconic cards. The only Yugioh products I really care about anymore honestly (after that, yes, I am now sick of seeing repeat Duel Monsters characters on products).
I mean, what Konami is doing is no different than what Pokemon is doing with rehashing and plastering Kanto Pokemons all over the place. Nostalgia is a big weapon for marketing
Yes, and a lot of pokemon fans are really sick of it.
@@Dreadwyrm with how much the games and merch sell despite the shit quality, clearly not enough are sick of it 🙄
I honestly respect it a lot more here than Pokemon, with pokemon while the 3d games have let me down the new pokemon designs are still really cool and interesting and have a lot of that original appeal.
I will always love dark magician and every single one of yugi's rivals
And the same goes for Jaden with heroes and his rivals in the series
The problem for me is even with the nostalgia pandering it’s still for nothing. The support doesn’t make dark magician or blue eyes competitive . Like not even tier 1 or anything. But the worst part is that the cards that are made for them like dragoon and souls get used in other decks and aren’t limited enough so they’re expensive even if the archetype isn’t top tier
That's what you're not understanding, the nostalgia pandering is for fun. It's not meant to be competitive. Everything doesn't have to be meta related dude.
You competitive players just dont get it
I honestly agree with this.
Missing timing shouldn't even be a thing honestly. It's so stupid

Wished it didn't which was why I hated Vrains aside its from production issues.

Right I been thinking the same what about us older fans now I'm sure they could pull it off. Make something that will make us want to return to yugioh.

The Duel monsters pandering will only be fine if i get more lunalight support soon. Serenade dance, sabre dancer, and yellow marten are great but i need more cards for my favorite archetype
Tri-brigade works as a splashable engine in Lunalight. To me, that was indirect support.
@@zachbrown9350 my main deck is lunalight tri brigade
The pandering helps me get friends into the game; they often have a favorite anime deck from Duel Monsters, and it helps me quickly set them up with a deck as well as (recent) product to buy if they want more - it's great! As a more 'competitive' player though, it irks me. These decks often aren't even rogue tier yet they take multiple products a year. I hope they increase the power level of the nostalgia support to actually help broaden the competitive landscape.
I for one have a bottomless pit of hunger for blue eyes support
What Konami gets wrong is the price tag on these "nostalgia" decks. It shouldn't cost so much to put together a tier 3 deck. They should be like structure decks with a few cards missing at most to collect.
@RewindBobo
Wait you mean the Eternity code Booster box?
You mean vanguard players want their signature deck and cards to be playable in every format?
*GASP*
If Konami hadn't released the Blue Eyes Structure deck, I would have never gotten back from my 5 or 6 year hiatus. ^^

No one would forgive another game for being the way YGO has been
ngl the new god card support tempted me to come back to the game but covid said nope
maybe after all this over...
@Mr Mistah Every competitve player online: I'm so sorry for what I'm about to do to you.

This a great topic to talk about. I was thinking the same thing recently.
@@starbound100 How true.
Konami sells what sells. Who can blame them. I assume they have the data on it.
Wat we need is a focus on more niche or minor characters like I'd love a legendary decks for rex raptor weevil mako and the paradox brothers
Yes I want all of those especially the paradox brothers
Tbh, the nostalgia content is mainly for reeling in returning players. And even still, Speed Duels tried to sell Rex and Weevil decks, but those products cluttered shelves at half price (while the Yugi and Kaiba starter decks are now 8x the price)
I mean weevil and mako got cards in legendary duelist sets already, and dinosaurs are already pretty stacked so there probably isn't much they can do for Rex. I'd be down for some Paradox brother support though
@@mr2oxking it's super weird that gate guardian never got an xyz retrain.
Did I just hear Syrus & Cyber Dragons in the same sentence? Dang Paul its Zane that played Cyber Dragons not Syrus.
Didn't he play cyber dark in 1 episode tho?
Syrus definitely inherits some of Zane's cards after they put him in the hospital. So whilst Zane is iconic for Cyber Dragons (Well, Cyberdark), Syrus did definitely play them.
Syrus used a Cyberdark Vechiroid deck in the last duel with some Cyber Dragon cards against Makoto.
@@randomprofile5853 Now there's a fan. Trivia city over here. 😅👊🏻
@@crewie94 Yeah, plus to me that was a very memorable duel. And we are getting a Structure deck in the TCG that's based around Cyber Dragon & Cyberdarks working together so it's fitting to tell that to people if they didn't know.
Yoo a remaster DM anime would bring soooo many people back into the game.
Legendary Duelist season 1 will be my favourite set ever just because of the Crystal Beast support.
Those were in 2
They need to finish the anime series seasons that were not completed in english.
I would still be annoyed. I've just seen so much of those cards in the last 3 years that I just can't anymore.
Which reminds me, its been already 2 decades and we still don't have Gate Guardian support. ;-(
Pls no more Joey based support, it's literally inconsistent trash, cause the guy's gimmick was relying on luck and shoving in random cards with 0 synergyin his excuse for a deck.
Literally the only successful nostalgia Red-Eyes cards were the fusions with Yugi's cards.
Gate Guardian retrains would be neat though
Im 16 and still had a bit of trouble learning
The support cards for Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes are the only reason I got a renewed interest because I like nostalgia duels between those two 😁
Agree with u 100%.
It’s not pandering when the modern game is hella complicated to the point you’re losing profit when new gamers want nothing to do with it
honestly, I wanted to come back but I cant get into this game anymore.
@@hybridgxvlogs5343 You can, you just need the will to do it. And that's the thing most people don't want to learn a card game over weeks just to play it. They want a game they can pick up, learn the basics in maybe 1-2 hours and play.
What are you talking about? Yu-Gi-Oh! is still profitable. Duel Links is still printing money.
@@hybridgxvlogs5343 Get the Link Evolution video game it teaches you everything.
Also Konami seems to love a lot of DM characters but only focusing on the main characters of the other series (if that… Zexal and Arc-V havent really seen any of their characters on YGO product in a while… except with Synchro Storm.)
Although I would like if the Tins could be more expansive then just DM era
All I want is Elemental Hero Neos Kluger( Fusion Monster) lol
I just want the nostalgia support to be good
Right? If they’re gonna print so much, at least make it good
Casual players are still the vast majority of players of any TCG.
No, I need more Raidraptor cards!
(Only in Japan)
Their spells have secret rare printings too.
What kind of camera do you guys use?? It looks great, I need one for personal vlogs.
Abandoning the classic monsters would be like Pokemon abandoning Pikachu and Charizard lol
I think it would cool to have a reboot! Maybe we can get more of a story about old man Solomon and his little card shop.
I wish Umbral Horrors and malicevorous got some support along with No. 96 Dark mist as well as its choas form. They can swarm the field quickly to summon good monsters, but... they don't have much else going for them.
Yugioh would be dead without "pandering"
The new structures, legendary duelist and the legacy support we’ve received like Karakuri, Fabled, Armed Dragons is the type of legacy support I want. Older neglected decks are being given new cards that actually benefit them and let them be at least playable in the modern game. The “you remember when this happened in the anime? Isn’t our protagonist so cool!” support is not what I want to see. The kings court stuff looked really interesting when it was retrains of the arcana knight monsters, then they added in a bunch of random “remember when yugi did this?” cards
Maybe if they’d finally make an anime with likable characters like in GX or 5Ds, they wouldn’t need to do so much nostalgia pandering
zexal and vrains was fireee their poblem is that thery dont know to finish the story
The shows after 5D's had likable characters. Zexal was actually more successful than 5D's in Japan.
Sometimes i feel like we still miss a really powerful and strong branded support
I like my Dark Magician cards
But even I will admit that I tend to roll my eyes at more Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, and even HERO support (I loved Elemental Heroes and it's subsets)
Also, shoutout to Payne96 and his never ending journey to get new Volcanic support to this very moment in time!
The seasonal legendary duelist boxes make fun duels between friends too.
i agree with both sides
on one hand i grew up till 5ds so i love like every kind of support from dark magician to black wings bu ton the other hand i discorvered "newer" archetypes too mainly through duel links like brotherhood of fire fist, shiranui or noble knights which are really cool themed decks.
i just wished konami would more structure decks or legendary decks type products which include the actual good cards for the anime decks so that it wouldnd be that expensive(e.g. dm support from magical hero or like every other hero card)
Still waiting for drones and armatos legio...
I want XYZ or Link monsters for Barrel Dragon. Maybe a structure deck based around the monsters. And have a dice based structure deck. Like Battle of the Gamble would be a cool structure deck name. Battle of the Gamble: Flip of Luck and Battle of the Gamble: Roll of Fate
they should make support cards for all my old favorite normal monsters
like flame champion, cosmo queen, science soldier, trance, mystical elf
and more generic support cards
I like the nostalgia stuff
I wanna see some of the other Duel Monster stuff get support though, like Pumpking, Gate Guardian, and the Slime monsters.
@Ramon Lopez true
