  • I bought some new gouache the other week and wanted to try them all in a gouache off! The brands I have are: Royal Talens Designers Gouache, Windsor & Newton Designer Gouache, and Caran D'ache Studio Gouache.
    I do mention this in the video but just in case - this is not a review video. To be honest I saw no difference in these gouache, because I am a n00b.
    If you would like to learn more about gouache, and these brands in particular check out these links. They are all by Sandra Ruberto who has lots of amazing videos.

    Have you tried any of these brands? What's your favourite gouache?

    My favourite gouache brand is Turner acryl, not sure if it’s vegan but I love them so much! The pastel colours are lovely.
    I really enjoy layering with different thicknesses with gouache, so I start with a watered down layer and then put less watered down goauche on the top. It’s great for adding more texture

      hhhmmmm...I think when I was researching it wasn't...but I have heard Turner are nice. To be honest I am such a n00b they all felt the same to me, I wasn't joking 😂 I might try that layering process. I have been a bit scared to layer too much as I am used to acryla gouache which doesn't re-wet. But so far I have really been enjoying using them.

    Love that you called it a gouache off! 😁 I had a family member pronounce it like "gooshy paint" I have never tried any of those so that's interesting. I have Arteza gouache, the jelly gouache (Himi/Miya), and the Turner Acryl gouache.

      I think you unboxed the him gouache a while ago? I remember a few people doing that though so I could be wrong 🙈 I think I have enough paint for a while now! They have been fun to play with :)

    I like the winsor and newton gouache! It's really rich to mix and use, but I say that having only started using gouache a couple months ago...Thank you for sharing, I love your sketchbook!

      Thanks Kathleen! I am very new to gouache too, but it has been fun to learn :) The Windsor & Newton set is nice, mine had just dried out so much after 2 years of not using!

    Thank you for the fun video! I'll have to check out that Talens set, they are so bright and affordable. I just wonder if they could be chalky.
    I have Arteza gouache right now, which is fine but definitely difficult to learn how to work with as a beginner. I recently saw a video where the reviewer described the exact problems I was having, which made me realize I wasn't necessarily doing everything wrong. The gouache just behaved very differently from the brands used in instruction videos. Mainly, they dry super quick so it's really hard to get and maintain a workable consistency. Other issues: they aren't as pigmented so they lose opacity and vibrancy when they aren't super thick. And they get muddy when mixing quite easily because they're multi-pigmented.
    Now that I know all of this, I can work with it. It really helped when I found the videos by WeroNoYume. She does amazing videos on using cheap brands gouache. I learned so much from her, highly recommended!
    I now have a Himi set on the way, I'm very curious how I'll like those paints. At least they'll be nice and moist, which was the main attraction to me.
    Finally, maybe you could do a video on vegan (and maybe vegetarian) art supplies? I'm pretty sure there are plenty of people like me who may not be vegan but don't like the idea of animal products in their art supplies.

      The talens are probably my favourite of the three, just because I think the oranges and greens were a little brighter. I didn't notice any chalkiness though. I have watched WeroNoYume, they have very aesthetic videos! Enjoy the Himi gouache - I know lot's of people like those ones. I could do a vegan art supplies video! That is a great idea. I will put it on the list and do a bit of research for it :)

      Hi! I just wanted to pop back and let you know I am uploading a vegan art supplies video tonight. Thanks so much for the great idea!

    My absolute fav standard gouache brand is Schmincke. Their tubes are just so easy and clean to use. W&N caps are so hard to open when they dry. All the paints I use (W&N, Schmincke, Holbein) are alright, but sometimes the packaging makes me choose what to buy
    OOPS

    • @monkeymintaka
      @monkeymintaka  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are things I hadn't thought of! I guess I don't have enough experience to start looking at packaging comparisons BUT I did almost take my finger off while opening a dry W&N tube 🤣

    I was so done when you said "gouache-i" for the plural lol I have tried the winsor and newton gouache but I think they stink and are a bit streaky Vegetable glyceryn is a good idea but I try not to leave paint in a palette because I like to control the consistency of the paint. All the fruit came out awesome! Fun to see you play with gouache-gouache instead of acryla gouache

    • @monkeymintaka
      @monkeymintaka  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't noticed a smell with any of them 🤔 the glycerine definitely helped though, especially with the w&n ones as they were all pretty dried out

    very colourful spreads 😀 i think the only difference between them might be pigment content, but that is sometimes very hard to see when you use them and its only after years that you might see a difference

      Thankyou! That makes a lot of sense, I am happy with all of them and I've actually been using them this week in my sketchbook but just mixing then all together! Looks like I won't need new gouache for a while 🤣

    I have only ever tried arteza and royal talens, but like the really cheap gouache and they were so bad! I really liked the strawberries!

      Thanks Liz! I was surprised how big the royal talen tubes were! They were still pretty good quality though

    I like the Apples. I have a cheap set of gouache that is a local art supply brand and I haven’t really used them enough to form an opinion. I think I’m too stuck on acryla gouache right now.
