For those of us who already have the HIMI gouache: my number one tip is to use a good quality white gouache to mix with. Mine is from Windsor and Newton, and mixing my paints with it greatly enhances the painting experience.
Also, I recently painted in a new sketchbook with very smooth sturdy low-absorbant paper. And that was much more enjoyable than painting on watercolour paper.
Finally, painting on the (smoother) back of watercolour paper instead of the front tends to work better as well.
Edit: Oh, and thank you for the video of course. Despite the paints not being great, you managed to make very cool art anyway.
Do you know what kind of paper your sketchbook has or what paper is it? I'd love to try the Himi gouache on different papers! So far I've found smooth watercolor paper to be the best. Maybe I'll try some Bristol board next :)
And yes, mixing in good white is always a good idea!
@@VisualMind The paper is probably not easy for you to get, because it's sold by a small Dutch brand called Waar. The paper is partly made with elephant grass, which is supposed to be more ecological because it grows very fast.
I tried looking up the manufacturer for you so you could check availability in other countries. But that company (Viber) turned out to be Dutch as well.
It was actually sold as a notebook, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it performs as a sketchbook. And the paper has a really nice feel to it.
I wouldn't go out of my way to get it if I were you, unless you're super curious. But I noticed that the painting process was more pleasant, and that seemed mostly due to the paper being so smooth and dense. It almost feels like it behaves the opposite way compared to watercolor paper, if that makes sense?
I can imagine that other new types of paper, like stone or bamboo may also be interesting to explore as options.
And since HIMI is from China, and supposedly used in art schools, maybe it's meant to be used with a paper that is commonly used there? Now I'm curious if those schools maybe use a different type of paper for painting than the schools in western countries.

I have a few Bristol boards and marker papers that I'll try! What I like about gouache though and why I use watercolor paper is because you can also get watercolor effects if you add more water. I'll also try more hot pressed watercolor paper since it's more smooth :)
I’ve never seen those pan gouache palettes before 😮 they look like they’d be a lot less messy than jellies! Also really surprised me how good the caran d’ache painting looks and how opaque it is, considering they are dry gouache
Yes but I think you really have to soak them in water which makes it slightly more messy... still a bit less messy than the jelly gouache tough 😁

I have Pelikan watercolor sets...both the the "transparent" and the "opaque" pan sets of 24 colors (they don't call it gouache because it isn't.) I've had the transparent set for decades and there's been no degrading at all. They're technically student grade and have no pigment info, but they are really very high quality, beautiful colors. and have been around for many years. They're not cheap, but are what I call "almost professional" in their performance. In particular, the lay-down of the opaque set is so soft, velvety and give a slightly mat finish, but not chalky. Both sets are really great for sketchbook work. I'm always surprised that there are very few reviews of them on YT, but they're great and if anyone is looking for a solid set of high quality watercolors or opaque watercolors and not quite ready to buy the artist quality stuff, I'd highly recommend trying Pelikan.
They're the ones I grew up using! They're the #1 brand used in schools here :)

I'm more into gouache tubes than pans, but the caran d'ache set looks actually pretty cool.
I dried out my Himi gouache onto a palette and I honestly can't tell much difference from Caran D'ache. The only gouache I'm super unhappy with is honestly Holbein white, primary white, I think it is. It dries to a powder that you absolutely can't rewet.
Gotta check if I have that specific white from Holbein and test! So far my only similar issue I've had is the primary red from Winsor & Newton drying all crumbly... love that color so much when fresh but hard to reactivate 😅
@@VisualMind I had the same problem with a couple of W&N primary reds. Very crumbly.
Was it a air tight palette? I have holbein gouache but have been wanting to put them in a travel palette. I’m considering keeping both my whites in tubes tho

My first set of gouache was Caran D’ache. I now use mostly W&N, but I kept the Caran D’ache set and still enjoy it.

When you use a hairdryer ir heatgun to warm the tape a little, it will come off a lot easier. I use the Agave paper to and have never had an issue with tape tearing.
And Pelican also has a gouache pallet. Thank you for comparing the himi and caran d'ache. 💜

Yeah the heatgun helped a bit! Tape was still a bit too sticky though 😅 I didn't know Pelican is doing gouache now! I grew up with their watercolors
I prefer the Caren Dash one. The gouache is really nice and as good as my Himi pallet or vice versa. 😅. It’s just lighter for moving around when traveling.
I have always felt the himi gouache was more of a gimmick that everyone went crazy for when it came out. Regarding the Caran D'ache gouache, I agree with everything you have said BUT! There is one that is really good, & really opaque and creamy! It's the grey! That one I do actually rate. But otherwise, yes, if you can, buy Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney is also very good and can be reasonably priced (depending on your location) and any of the other more expensive brands like Holbein, schminke etc.
Yeah I really liked the gray tone! I mixed it into the paints to desaturate the colors and it was very nice 😁 Gotta try Daler Rowney at one point!
I like the Caran D’ache gouache because apart from being easy to use, there’s very little colour shift.

😢 I have tried acrylics in the past and just gave up on them after struggling for a big
I have a background in arylic and then moved to watercolor. I STRUGGLED with watercolor but was determined to learn to use them lol it took the right PAPER! 100% CP to finally be happy with my art. I’m trying gouache now which I wish I would have tried first since it’s a happy medium between the both. Maybe try arylca gouache it’s the best worlds like acrylics and like watercolor. Once it dries it’s won’t reactivate with water so when you layer your colors won’t muddy!!!! Check out Holbein arylca
I personally prefer the himi, the Caran d’Ache is really only good for very small projects or used kind like watercolor, but personally I prefer my opaque watercolors, bcuz the Caran d’Ache gets a tad clumpy, but I’ll definitely use your suggestion and this may change my mind. I actually have Winsor and newton & m.Graham but my personal favorite student option is savoir Faire 20 set. I was really surprised by them, much better than the royal talens

@@VisualMind I actually have 5 colors from the savoir faire in my 18 well stay wet palette that has my Winsor and newton and m.graham colors. I think it’s after using the professional gouache that I’m able to work with the cheaper ones, but I definitely understand others who find a way to work with cheap stuff when that’s all they have. I think I just dislike the the super mess that the Caran d’Ache makes, or maybe it’s bcuz I like scooping or pouring my colors onto a white palette and can’t really do that with the Caran d’Ache.
they both work well, i think it comes down to costs and which is easier to get where you live.

Have you ever tried the Jack Richards Gouache set? That's what I got to try gouache. Super messy and I haven't had a lot of success, but also haven't done much of it. Still a newby!

Melanie, can you please tell me, which is a better option in Gouache? Caran D'ache Gouache, or Winsor & Newton Designer Gouache introductory set? My sister gifted me the W&N Introductory Set, and I am excited to use it for your Skillshate classes. But is Caran D'ache a better set for learning from? The white comes in a tube that comes with the palette :)
how many euros at Muller? My friend always grabs stuff for me in Zagreb and there is a giant Muller. 😀

I have tried some cheaper Gouache paints so far (Reeves, Mont Marte, Arteza, etc) and even tho i really love the Arteza Gouache so far, the Himi Gouache in my opinion is better.
I am a Gouache beginner and i have such a good time with the Himi set. It seems like you use an old and kinda dried up set allready because i am nowhere close to the water-gouache ratio you are at to get the paints to a nice consistency.
I also spray my set every few days with a tiny bit of water to keep them from drying out.
The paper i am using is also on different thickness and some smooth and some textured and i am very pleased with it :D
Saying you maybe should buy a new set to try seems a bit over the top but your struggles may really come from the allready half-dried paints itself.
It all comes down to preference i guess! I've been using this Himi Set since it was new and refreshed it a few times... didn't really make a difference though honestly. So now I'm saving myself the hassle and just let it dry up... The consistency is still either gooey or streaky when there's more water in the paint. Personally I liked Arteza way more but have to admit it's been a while since I used it. Gotta try it again and compare :)

Girl, the Avatar movies are not racist at all 😂 It's anti colonization, and they are literal aliens. It's fantasy, and most fantasy movies take inspiration from other cultures and combines them. Star Wars, the avatar series that is the anime one, Genshin Impact, and many others. It sounds like you want to cancel the fantasy genre.

If black or indigenous people did not like this then why did the actress play in it? Also I am part native american and Mexican so when I saw native american things I did not care honestly. I am not wanting to start a fight honestly. I was pointing out what I believe. Nothing was meant to be rude but was supposed to be in an educational way. Having white saviors try to tell me when something is racist is putting people like me down. I just stated what I thought.

@Visual Mind it means who are you when you run out of issues and grievouses? They are fictional blue aliens. No racism or cultural appropriation. "When your identity and activism is based on grievance and identity, and based on the expectation of victim hood and appropriation, you see it everywhere. It is the lens you see everything thru" The rest of us, don't. And we don't have racism in our worlds. Never enters of days and we never give it a thought. So who's the problem ? And largely, I don't even think that you actually think that. I think some dip on Twitter told you that's what it is. And I am not sure which is worse, someone who's identity is all grievances that don't have anything to do with them, or artists that don't have any independent thought.
