Honestly I feel like leg arms would be such an amazing auto tech teacher because how good he is at explaining things and how patient he is with working on stuff
What??
No!!! Scott might have too much fun and Welker Farms might lose him !!!
Leg arms would not have the security outside the farm working, him and his brother live in beautiful homes, who the hell wants to dump that?
But will it pick up bowling balls?
Hahahaha. Good point!
I'm sure when they are done, it'll pickup Volkswagens!🤣😂🤣
But why on earth would bowling balls be in fields????😅😅😅 lol
The green one I ran for many years would pick up as small as a softball and as big as you could feed through it. Many, many basalt lava rocks removed with that bad boy.
a special side hopper.. Bwwwhhahaa
The Welker ability to fabricate, fix, and come up with solutions is incredible!
The used rock picker makes perfect sense. Those rocks have been around for a long time. You don’t need a new rock picker for old rocks. 😂
The money you guys have saved on sending out for repairs must be over a million dollars! Thank God for Leg Arms, Hollywood and your expertise Papa Welker!
Easiest way to remember hydraulic hose sizes is dash size is in 16th of an inch increments. So -4 = 4/16” =1/4”. -5 =5/16”. -6 = 6/16” = 3/8” and so on. That’s the inside diameter.
No such thing as over kill there is only open fore, then cover me whole I reload!
So hydraulic lines are measured in 1/16th of an inch, IE 1/2 inch =8/16s
These are the best sort of Welker videos! Long time fan.
I did a first aid course the other week for work (tree surgeon/arborist). He ended up teaching us about hydraulic injuries. That is no joke!! Good to see you make sure they are tight, basically a pin hole in a finger can fill your arm with hydraulic fluid, which stops oxygen getting to your arm and you end up with what looks like extreme frost bite!! The only way to treat it is to go to the hospital and have a major operation. Stay safe guys 👍🏻👍🏻
Oh man that's nasty! I've heard stories too. Praying that never happens to us!
@@WelkerFarms the pictures he showed us were horrible. He said to use cardboard to check for leaks and keep your hands well away. But I never heard of it. Good you know about it 👍🏻👍🏻.
I remember when l could watch your videos 2 times a week like clock work. Can't tell you how much l miss those days. I believe l would watch if all you did was talk about the time of day. 😅 The shop work you show is awesome and anything with the Big Buds is golden.
God Bless You All !
The internal rod gland seal on a hydraulic cylinder is notoriously difficult to install without damage due to its tight location and stiff material.
A special tool and method has been devised to make the installation much safer and easy. Using a special three leg pliers the warmed seal is pressed from its round shape to a "W" shape which uses the mechanical advantage of the pliers to shorten the seal just enough to clear the internal bore where the seal must fit. Once the seal is positioned in its groove the pliers are released and the seal pops back into its round shape and mission accomplished without damage.
Three leg pliers for this application are available from tool companies sized individually or as a multi-size kit and priced for your needs.
👍
I bought one of those tools from amazon. It was a worthwhile investment and saved a lot of time
Mr Welker ,you taught those boys well. Always a pleasure watching what you come up with next.
That is a lot better way to pick rocks, especially if you have A/C. I had a Farmall C pulling a hay wagon with an old car hood chained on behind, small rocks piled on the wagon the big rocks got rolled onto the old car hood. Test the hydraulic hose for a leak with a piece of cardboard not your hands. Hope you all stay safe and healthy. Also thanks for explaining how you are doing things, you guys really rock at sharing information. The boys will no longer be living a stones throw away, lol.
Ah the Ritchie Bros paint job, nice to see the masters of mechanics back in the shop......the highness of hydraulics......the Faro of fabrication......the emperors of improvements,,,,,
I never cease to be amazed at your fabrication skills!
Thanks for showing us how a cylinder works and how to make hoses!
Micheal Bloomberg said farmers aren't very smart. They don't know business very well.
You are proof that a farmer is an engineer, a mechanic, a Pharmacist, chemist, irgraminist, truck driver, and certainly a business man, or woman. All around genius comes to mind.
Thanks for providing that to us. God Bless you all.
If a farmer isn’t very smart, they don’t stay in business very long.
Good choice in rock picking wagon. Hydraulic is the only way to go. Use a tractor where you can adjust the flow rate. You want it fast enough to give your hyro motor enough power to tose a 100 ib rock or so, but not to fast were it just pounds itself to pieces. When you get good with it you will tose a rock and the reel will only make a half a revolution to pick a rock. Also put a big frame about 2/3 of the way back on the dump basket, and hang a heavy curtain made out of muddlap material. It will keep rocks from being tossed completely over the back of the machine. They put them on new ones.
I owned a degelman rock picker like yours in the 80s but mine had a hydraulic motor that ran the reel. I picked many loads of rocks with that machine without any breakdowns. I also owned a rock rake that I used to rake rock in a windrow which the degelman picker worked great with because I could travel slow while the paddle reels speed could be adjusted for the amount of rocks in the windrow. It is a quality made machine and will do a great job for you.
There is a fantastic tool for putting that seal in the gland. Did them for a number of years.
The fabrication by the Welkers is just amazing.
The bat teeth look quite worn. Consider cutting some small wedges to weld on to square them up and then hard surface them.
When the teeth are nice and square they grab rock like a dream and don't slip over top of them.
We built ours back up and works much better now.
put some lite oil on the hose and fittings before putting the fittings on the hose and then some oil on the outside the fitting before cripping. the hose goes together faster and not has hard to get a good crip. less failures. keep an eye open for a rock rake to windrow the rocks to make rock picking faster and you get more of the rocks out of the field. rock rakes level the ground too
Now this is a Welker video I can enjoy. Legarms and Dad getting creative and fixing stuff. That thing is huge. 😀👍
Degleman is a great machine! One addition you might want to add is the apron at the back that stops the stones from being tossed over the hopper.
It’s pretty simple and it helps a lot!
I think Zak the millennium farmer has one of these hydraulic drive.. good job guys. That thing looks great.
House building is obviously important but I must admit I prefer the agricultural workshop & actual farm work more, just say'in, thanks for the video.
Love the "Safety squints" there Leg Arms when you cut the hose.
All the years on the farm, I never rebuilt a cylinder. That was great, thank you!
We have rebuilt cylinders on our 100Ft ladders truck! So I trust rebuilds! LOL
that tensioner was also a softener for when the motor starts and stops shock absorber we will see how long it holds together hard working men great stuff
There is a tool to put that seal inside a gland, you can do 10 seals with the tool in the time it takes to do 1 without it.
Yes, you need a guard for your drive motor to stop rocks from bashing it. And breaking hydraulic hoses too! Need separate spinner and Dumping hydraulic circuits 8:52
Your fabrication skills are absolutely amazing. I never get tired of watching you make things!
Many years ago, as a teenager, I was raking hay with an Oliver 66. Every time I spotted a rock I stopped and picked it up, and placed it on the platform on the tractor where your feet go. By the time I finished that field, I could no longer use the brakes, because the brake pedals were covered with rocks.
If you welded a bunch of the concaves together in a circle and double stack them that would make a great fire pit burn ring. Just a thought.
its always such a pleasure to watch you work and problem solve...thank you all for everything you do cheers
It’s good to see you guys back in the shop again, it’s been a while 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beets using "stonen boat" for picking rocks, "armstrong lifting stones on and off." Great conversion job, treating hydraulic leaks.
Legarms is a gangster, Straight crimpin his hose.
That was informative for sure. Thank you for showing us how to rebuild a cylinder and how to make hoses. By the way, I noticed your funnel drain that you showed us how to build a few years ago. Your Welker channel has been a great asset showing us how to make stuff for around the farm.
I always suspected that Bob rocked...but who knew that collectively, the Welkers are ...ROCK Stars??!?🤣🙃🙂😆🙃🙂💯🎯👍
We admit we all have been stoned many times.......just dont take us for granite.... 😊👍
@@RobertWelkerFarmerBob I'll imbibe to that!🥃
Thanks for another great video Welkers. It was interesting.
Thanks to Scott and Bob for showing us the part of the rock picker they worked on.
My compliments to you both for your engineering skills. You are doing great on redoing the rock picker.
Scott you can fix just about anything I believe. I would have been completely lost trying to figure out what you and Bob did and made it look easy.
Great skills both of you have.
Believe you will have a nice piece of equipment when done.
Thanks again for showing us the building of the rock picker.
You all take care and be safe. Enjoyed following along with you both. Totally enjoy my time with the Welkers always.
The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
These dudes have mad fabrication skills. Very impressive
O Gees, I've got loads of experience picking up rocks ,we had two ,with rakes. Happy picking. 😊
We use a zip tie on the inner seal install. Zip tie the center together, slip the seal down inside and place in the groove then cut the zip tie and slide it out. The seal falls in the groove when the zip tie is cut.
We could only manufacture air and hydraulic pipes at our company. The hoses had to get ordered.
Since we made custom builds we could not have hoses on stock.
But we had old hoses, that we used for measuring...different lengths and connectors...that way we could already check the position of the hoses and adjust it if required...in the end just note down the hoses that we used and order them.
Scott, overkill is underrated: Said every fabricator! Also my dad taught me that, and it has to me never been disproven!
Pressure relief is the re-set circuit breaker ,to shear pin fuse.
Have ya'll ever raised cows/bison/hogs/chickens for meat ,by feeding your seed screenings?
Interesting how regions differ in soils.
In coastal Ga we have sand but no rocks, except small baseball at about 2 ft deep in areas.
Our rocks in central NY won't go thru that reel. Two to three rocks fit with just straight tines. We left your size rocks for another day. We grow them. Frost is our best friend and worst enemy. The soil gets mellow with deep frost and brings rocks to surface.
Agree
Degelman, good Saskatchewan implements.
A man could make a decent living with just that hose crimper and a little know how!! Thanks for sharing!
My dad had a rock picker like that but it was PTO ran never seen one ground driven now you have to go get the rock rake we had a 14-footer
Best videos are those of you makin', fixin', and/or re-purposin' stuff. Well done, everybody 👏 👍.
Great job working on the rock picker LegArms
Not sure why the rock picker gets paint, yet the pea cleaner still waits for a couple coats of love.
I used a Degelman rock picker in Alberta that was always hydraulic. I always enjoy your videos. God bless your family.
Always enjoy shop time with you guys. You are quite the fabricator Scott. Thanks for the schooling on hydraulic cilinders Bob.
Hope you all had a great thanksgiving 🦃🦃🦃
Stay safe and warm guys !!!
Nice project on the rock picker for Scott!
Leg arms you sure hanger lost allot of weight, seems like allot of people are on the weight loss Highway right now. The rock picker looks great. You spent a great deal of time and welding getting it done.
Hydraulic number fittings go by 1/16 inch. 1/4 inch is 4/16ths so -4 size. 5/16ths is a -5 size. 3/8 is 6/16ths so a -6 size. 1/2 inch is 8/16ths so a -8 size. 5/8 is 10/16ths so a -10 size. 3/4 is 12/16ths so a -12 size. 1 inch is 16/16ths so a -16 size.
Spring tensioner instead of a bolt for the chain. My unwanted two cents.
We need that in our creek bottom fields
That is a lot better way to pick rocks, especially if you have A/C. I had a Farmall C pulling a hay wagon with an old car hood chained on behind, small rocks piled on the wagon the big rocks got rolled onto the old car hood. Test the hydraulic hose for a leak with a piece of cardboard not your hands. Hope you all stay safe and healthy.
We use to have a ground drive like that. We looked a getting the covert kit from Dagelman, but traded instead to a Rockomatic with hydraulics. The ground drive, like yours, had four bats. The non-ground unit had three, I think. It was a great machine, this one we have now is also. Like watching you fellas work things out 👍👍
Got one of them exact rock pickers, honestly you guys got a very dependable picker. Only thing we ever found was the short hitch frame impeded some visibility on our newer tractors. The Old cockshutt/Oliver 1900 open station tractor was ironically our go to machine for picking stone( though I wouldn’t recommend it if one values their hearing hahaha). Nevertheless keep up the awesome work guys, folks up here enjoy your content!
Awesome fabrication and repairs!
I will say with those rams inspect the collars that screw onto the tubes. I have 2 of them pickers. This spring one decided it didn’t want to work on a Sunday morning so it literally blew the collar off the casing! I know it’s not a common thing to happen but now I pay a little closer attention to that to try and prevent it.
Loving the rock picker upgrade 💪🏻 awesome 👌🏻 Look forward to seeing it in action, I remember rock picking loved it 😂! I only found your TH-cam channel the other week but loving it! Been over 20 years but really makes me want to come back to Montana… 🫶🏻 Worked on the Olsen Ranch 3 hours west of you (Whitewater) in 2001 for nearly a year. 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
I love the fabrication! Another great video! Thank you.
Hi from Australia, we have exactly the same Degleman rock picker. We imported it from Canada. It has done a great job of picking up rocks in our irrigated cultivations. Enjoy your videos.
You should call it "Rocky"! 😉
Thanks a lot for the video! 😊👍🏻
Scott.... waaay too long-winded... perfect!
Mad skills on Welker Farms!
I had the identical rock picker with the hydraulic motor and it was a beast for picking up rocks. As long as the ground was nice and dry
My favorite videos of you guys fixing and building things! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The Lockwood Rock picker is a simple good tool, large locks are a good match to. I think Lockwood is out of Fargo, or close by. Was hoping to see more of Nicks house.
Can't believe you don't have an old hotplate lying around.
I love these videos! Making good equipment even better is impressive.
The scraper that went by is owned by Pete Woods
Those old degelman chain drive rock pickers should have had a lever for engaging the chain, I have 10 s of thousand acres with one of those . Always the first tractor job on the farm as a little kid
Great to see you guys working in the shop again. Love it
❤❤❤ the best way is to make it your way. Leg arms keep an eye 👀 on nick ...you need to give him some crap like he gave he was lol . He is your brother so be kind to him 😂😂😂
Awesome video! I love seeing you buy and fix up/customize your equipment. God Bless.
Haha I squint when I use my chop saw too.
Love watching y’all videos!! Can’t wait until the next one!!😁🙋🏼♂️👍
Theres a sweet tool for those pressure seals that folds the seal into a V shap and allows you to drop it into the bore and allows it to unfold into the groove seamlessly... And it never hurts to lap the cylinder with fine Emery cloth! Nice work Gentlemen 👍👍
I figured ther was a tool for this
A zip tie works also.
Scott great info on hydraulic hose crimping maybe someday you can make a video and go even deeper and talk about two wire versus four wire hose and skive versus non skive fittings
You guys can fix anything. Impressive!
😎 Truism from Grand Pa: measure twice...cut once! Ya can't un-cut it!!
Our Scott takes care of his toys !!!
I absolutely love your videos thank you so much for sharing
please do a show on your older equipment. I watch another channel where a John Deere tech works on all the new equipment and I can see why you run the machines you do. I worked at a truck dealership and I'm real familiar with the engines you run and even the hose machine you have
Always find your engineering interestingly.
Love seeing you on TH-cam Bob your ace 😊
Take a look for manual/design in making a side rake that will feed the main rock picker, speed up picking rocks
Picked a lot of rocks with those rock pickers they work great might need bigger tyres so they don't leave ruts
Great video guys! I use a Kivi pekka rock picker on my farm in Norway and could not be more happy with it (we have huge amounts of rock on our fields).
Those are nice machines...
Thanks for the tutorial Leg Arms. Awesome!
Your a good instructor, hyd fittings are a conundrum
Y'all are amazing family love your channel
