    This is definitely a debatable discussion. I don't believe owning a bike with a lot of tech classifies someone as a poor/unskillful rider. Tons of seasoned riders buy newer bikes with these features and turn them off. The way I see it, it's good to have options. What I recommend anyone starting out is - learn the very basic, then develop a very good understanding of the do's and dont's.

      How the hell is this debatable.Its baffling to me.They take nothing away from your riding expierience while providing you with safety.How can you say no to that?So you can feel a bit more manly?Is that it again?You think any chick in the world is gonna drop her panties down because you're riding with no ABS or traction controll?.Its laughable that you put your life up on the line for cheap thrills with minimal to no returns.Europe made ABS mandatory on every bike sold after 2017 because they estimate it will reduce accidents at up to a 1/3rd and i hope they do it with every single rider aid out there

    I started riding at 23. I'm now 46. No rider aids on those bikes back then. I have a 2016 Ninja 1000 now and I like the rider aids. I ride a hell of a lot safer now than I used to on those old bikes. When I want to mess about I turn them off, but I mostly ride with them on at their lowest settings. I can ride fairly well, but everyone thinks they can ride fantastically. Everyone is a street rossi until they find out the truth by sliding down the road (I've learnt my lesson a couple of times). I think anything that helps you not put the bike down is a plus. Anything that keeps us alive and on two wheels is a positive thing. Just a couple of cents from an old fart! :)
    Ride safe Night Rider! ;)

      Ninja Life Crisis true man .. everyone thinks they are street Rossi .. a 200 bhp bike has been deemed unsafe for streets by Moro gp riders themselves... I don't get these ppl who think they know a lot about bikes... taking a test ride here and there is different and owning Owning one is very different .. it starts with electronic aids are for a kids, then goes to helmet is worn by pussies,.. technically u shouldn't even wear a helmet then.. cause if u boast about being such a SKILLED RIDER u shouldn't be worrried at all then...

    I can admit this is why I bought the R1s and went from a 300 to a liter, felt more comfortable knowing I can build my confidence with the rider aids and then like you said turn down slowly and eventually off.

  • @pb77
    @pb77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I personally think rider aids are a good thing. Cars have them too. I'd use them if my bike had them, just in case I hit oil in a curve or I have a tire blow out...you never know what could happen...and those aids could potentially be the difference between eating shit and staying up...skill level is key, but a little extra help when needed could never be a bad thing.
    I do get your point though. I think they can instill too much confidence, and that's disaster waiting to strike. If a guy wants a 1000cc super sport, but will only buy one IF it has those aids....that's a no no. Besides, what if the aids fail? If you can't handle a certain bike riding the way you normally would without the aids, you don't belong on that bike WITH the aids!

      Yeah, you could be taking the same corner for years perfectly but then the time off you take from that corner an accident could have be spilt and you end up crashing. It's better as you can keep WOTing every corner w/o fear of spinning the rear while leaning.

    • @cmj20002
      @cmj20002 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree totally. These are designed to help avoid crashes. Even the best rider can get into trouble. If I had traction control on my Firebird I probably wouldn't have crashed. When the tires break traction you now have lost control and you are going for a ride at that point. I would rather a bike with traction control than not have it.

    I'm 57, over a million miles on many bikes, 20 yrs of racing, racing in rain, street riding in rain, without electronic rider aids. If you watch one of the new Panigale S V4 reviews, you'll see the Ducati test rider turn everything off and back the bike into a turn. There are already people removing the ABS on the 2017 GSXR1000R because the ABS cannot be fine tuned and is worse, than your ABS being in your own hand. And TC is in your wrist. As far as Moto GP riders using them, they have them practically turn off or down so low, they're hardly on.

  • @maikeli7

    Interesting!! With what I ride, such things are non-issues. I have never ridden a 1000, so I admit my inability, but if I got one, I'd want a non-electronic version--or at least The ability to turn that off so I could learn what the bike was truly capable of and develop the skills needed to control that.

      Maikeli7: Motovlogger Since 2007 The difference between an Ultra Classic and a 1000cc is EXTREME. Basically you can hit almost 80mph in first gear,100 in second,150 in third.At first ride it will seem impossible to tame or ride safely but it is.They can be ridden as slow and safe as a scooter.But it takes much skill to ride one well.

      If I owned a 1000 REPSOL, I am sure I would get myself into trouble. I'd be too tempted not to speed. If I lived where there were a track nearby for superbike-style riding, I'd go there religiously, but around these parts, I don't think there are any. I'd never want to do extreme riding on regular roads for fear of hurting other people and myself.

  • @JondreaSmith

    I'm anti rider aids because I'm an engineer and I trust a cable over a servo. Throttle by wire, traction control, and launch control all rely on sensor/actuator loops that have multiple points of failure. Also I do a lot of my own wrenching. It is much easier to troubleshoot and repair systems with fewer points of failure. A throttle cable is either broke or it ain't. The addition of all the electronics also increases the dependency on the dealership for troubleshooting and repairs. And like you said, rider aids are NOT Jesus. No amount of fancy electronics is going to save you from the responsibility of learning to properly ride whatever bike you decide to get on.

    A year late, but w/e, Imma call you out. I put 30k on my bike a year. I'm switching to a bike with abs and traction control by the end of next year. Rider aids aren't there for a clear dry day on good pavement. Good rider don't mean shit if you hit oil in a corner in the rain. • @ChrisJohn_444
    @ChrisJohn_444 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ya, Moto GP riders use them because they increase tire life and optimize fuel efficiency. Power modes are a nice feature to have if you want to skip buying a smaller bike as your first bike, even if you just use the lower power modes for the first couple of weeks of riding. But, I prefer the feel of the bike without the rider aids. Like wheelie control is a pretty dumb one, imo. Having said that, in the rain, I'll turn the traction control on, or at least choose a lower power mode, since, in the rain, I'm not trying to go anywhere fast, anyways.

    But my problem with this is that I/you could be the best rider in the world
    but the little old lady that somehow still has a license wont see you me all the same, I think the problem is the unpredictability of other people some people just shouldn't be on the roads...
    If I crash its my fault, But is someone hits me in an accident that (somehow could have been avoided by these rider aids) then I say why not... Going for a ride and somebody didn't cover there load properly some dirt fell off around a bend....... you see my point its just to unpredictable and a RISK WE take every day...

  • @elmSTREETnasty
    @elmSTREETnasty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Agreed 100%. If the power of a liter bike scares you because you don't know how to respect it, you don't need to be riding. If you can't learn what throttle control is without electronics helping you, you don't need to be riding. If you never rode a motorcycle before and you buy a liter for your first bike, you're a moron and chances are you're gonna get hurt either way because the electronics won't help. Most new riders can't even handle a 600 properly let alone a 1000 because they don't understand the power to weight ratio. If that offends anyone, you're the exact type of person NR was talking about in this video.

    Having ridden Harley's hard and then moving onto the MT-10 Yamaha I choose this bike because it only has 3 traction control and 3 power modes. Unlocked with a custom map it does 260 klms in 6th, very fast. I worked my way through the modes to now just turning them off. I still leave the least traction on because it wheelies very easily in 3 to 4 gears now. I also use the Standard mode when my daughter wants to ride with me. it's just a cruiser then and she feels comfortable and safe. If I do a early mountain run and just have have a cup of coffee. after the run I'm sick from all the G-force. Adrenaline, coffee and a very fast bike. Adds help hone your skills or you could just get a Harley, add a performance kit and beat most rider's on Sports bike. Learn to ride whatever bike you have. edge to edge and hang off even a Harley. I miss drifting on the Harley's. The Fatboy was the best.

      Night Rider It is analogous. Tires are a form of technology. They have improved much over the years. Accepting that improvement doesn't make one less skillful in itself. Same goes for other kinds of technology to improve safety like rider aides. Anyway, you don't want to ride with aides, that's cool. I don't ride with aides either. But if someone prefers to have them, that's cool too.

    I agree with you. I have a 1992 ZX7 with a ZX9R engine, which means my bike has carbs...all rider control no aids. I may add a drag shifter just to keep up with newer bikes but that's the only aid I want. I feel that riding that helps me ride anything. The only reason I see the need for any rider aid is to help someone get used to a new bike up to the point they don't need it anymore. After that cut them off or disable them and learn to be a better rider.

      If you know how to operate the braking system on a motorcycle you don't need ABS. If you're inexperienced or lack the skill to operate a motorcycle with efficiency then yes I agree, ABS is needed because they will stop a newb faster than foolishly slamming on the breaks on a non-abs bike.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been down in ABS for a long time, but only because of everything I've researched and read about the systems in use. They interfere, interrupt, take away feel and control of a situation.
      Well, that's changing. As precise and accurate as traction control has been on high-end bikes now, even so far as allowing tail-out drifting on a track without hi/low sides, the ABS is starting to get as intelligent working through the front wheel. What TC has been in the back end, ABS is getting on the front end. That's a good thing, because it allows control at the limit without obnoxious interference and pulsation. But it's required IMU and other gizmos to give the system enough feedback about what's going on.
      Bottom line is all this stuff costs money for R&D, electronics, programming algorithms, and adds complexity that may, or may not increase breakdowns. Do we want that as a community? Well, things are going that way whether we like it or not. :\
      What I fear more than anything, is that soon the motorcycling community will forget what many people got into riding for in the first place: having FUN. It's a sand-kicking war in a lot of ways.

    I would like to point out that almost all of the developmental work around rider aids has occurred in motogp, from the original simple wheel-speed based systems to the most advanced 6 axis IMU systems for slide control. Because they can also make you far faster.
    Rider aids are going to make an inexperienced rider safer and allow an experienced rider to come closer to skirting the edge of traction than human reflexes allow, you may not like it but given two people of equal skill, the one with rider aids is going to be faster.

    You're absolutely right when it comes to people who know how to ride turn off their rider aids. I have traction control on my bike but I only turn it ON when it's raining. You didn't mention that rider aids take a lot of fun out of the motorcycles.

    Interesting perspective night. I actually like rider aids. See I started on a 300 (balance) moved to a 750 (taught me about TC) then a 1000 (TAUGHT ME Wheelie control/throttle control/braking distance lol) but I went back down to a 650 to learn actual handling characteristics. When I started I was scared of big bikes mainly because I know myself. Even now I have a good amount of skill to operate my 650 at a high 90% I wish I had rider aids to hold that our 10 while I push through my barriers where mistakes get magnified. My next liter will be tracked and I know I don't have the skill off hand but it can be learned in a matter of summer commuting and track days. On a liter I consider riding aids because I been doing on one pushing with no safety net. I would like to learn with a safety net then turn it off. Then push my limits with the safety on until I'm comfortable with how the bike reacts. It beats another 10k totalled bike and 12k hospital bill.

      Eh.. I do that on the 109 since it doesn't have any. That said, I hate riding the 109 in the rain. Tire slips out a lot easier. Can ride full throttle on the S1000 with TC on.

      The Dunlop E3s are meh. I run a 250 Avon Cobra rear and Avon Viper on front. The 109 just isn't an easy bike to ride in the rain. That Dunlop is gonna be your worst nightmare, lol. It performs great on the highway, but it eventually flattens out and makes that rear push against you in a turn.

    You are absolutely right. And why start with big superbikes "small dicks?", start smaller, then gradually develop your skills. Then switching to high performance suberbike should not be so terrifying. I'll trust my own skills and bikes abilities when there is now electric gizmo to "help". I started again riding 2011, and started with slow as hell 500cc Royal Enfield. Now I also have Honda SevenFifty from 99. And I am fine that is old bike. If you crash it. I won't be expensive to repair and your learn riding skills again. No I am trusting this machine and I can take it to near to it's limits and be alive to tell next day. Now to changing to >100hp suberbikes is not a big deal. And I'll buy well maintained older bike without any driver aids. Because you should have to have real skills to ride those machines.

    Not really any different than putting all that same tech on cars. The reality that many don't want to face is the fact that a computer is vastly superior to a human when operating machinery. Lots of cars come with driving aids like traction control or ABS and motorists are a lot safer because of it. Kind of the same thing with motorcycles. I can ride without ABS, traction control, wheelie control, electronic suspension and a quick shifter, but if the bike comes with it I'm not going to turn it all off or not use it so that I can go around thinking my skills are on par with a MotoGP rider... because they're not.

He pushed a button to put it into an "economy mode" (I think that's what he called it), but as he rode it, he seemed a bit, un-impressed. Then he put it into a "sport" mode and as he pulled off, he screamed like a little girly-man. I couldn't help to think that if this guy's "Bike Foo" was half way decent, maybe he shouldn't be talking about how "uncivilised" the bike was and start to adjust his skillz upward. Rider aids are 100% a point of sale. Manufacturers want to entice new riders into buying more powerful bikes than they normally would because "it has traction contral, ABS, wheelie control, etc." and spend more money. I don't disagree with that necessarily because the more these companies make the more they expand and innovate. Although driving the prices up on a 2017 R6 because you ad 6-level traction control is kinda lame.

    I am not at all upset about this, but I do disagree with you. I've had quite a few bikes -- several were the fastest of the day -- and never had rider aides. I have ridden year round and, thank God, am still in one piece. But I look at ABS like airbags in your car: with skill and luck you'll never need them but it's nice for them to be there if needed. ABS doesn't impair your performance and if it kicks in it means you pushed things too hard. On the other hand, if you need launch control you probably shouldn't be riding.

    Well said bruv!
    Not to mention that EA gives the wrong ppl a false hope that they can ride a bike. Some ppl just don't belong on 2 wheels. Period.
    Clutchless bikes ? wtf..?
    Its like being a racing car enthusiast that prefer automatic transmission :/ gtfo..
    1k+ cc sportsbikes demand a certain respect. Its a language between you and the machine and the very thing that fuse you together in a weird biomechanical way.
    Now, give that language to an electronic box that translates it for you. What you have left ? Nothing!
    Imo the only good thing past years is ABS and only for street not track.

      Damon Khan Except that almost all modern cars have abs, and almost all modern sports cars are going to have traction and stability control.
      A poor rider is going to lean on them not to crash, a good rider is going to use them to free up mental space to perfect lines, body positioning, etc.

      3, Throttle, bodyposition, riding the correct line, weight distribution, temperature of tyres etc is something you develop naturally along the way, IF you where born for it.
      3, why do you think the NSX or Elise are still very respected sportscars ?
      Because the engineering is mechanical. You are part of the engineering on a bike, and guess what ? You are mechanical by nature.
      4, Every time you try to justify EA, just ask yourself one question: Do you really need EA or are you just riding too fast ?
      5, The more you ride the less is the use of TC and AW, trust me!

    you come off as a bit biased here. I'd expect you of all people to appreciate the tech seeing as you started on a Hayabusa. Sure there may be people who are scared, and want to have the computer help them out, but why make that seem like a bad thing? I know you don't intend on putting those people down cause judging from your vids you respect all riders.
    Maybe someone wants to buy their dream bike as their first bike which may happen to be a balls off the wall 1000+cc model, but don't want to wait by having to start off with a 300 and work their way up, or buy it and wreck the first day cause they were overconfident. Yes, everything you are saying is true for most people, but again, why make it seem as a bad thing?
    that being said, your vids have inspired confidence, enough so that I got my sights on a HD Night Rod for my first bike.

    Love you man but I have to disagree. If you are a road rider exclusively yes u r correct but if u ride track then this is the safest way to be fast and minimise your risk

      stefano cioni I ride faster on the street than most do on the track.And who goes to a track to ride safe?Thats the place to unleash the beast.

      Night Rider ok. Can I ask if u have ridden an r1m or s1000rr? I only assume u haven't because these things do need the technology that they come with in order to do quick lap times. Hey, believe me I support your concept, but for strictly track riding, technology is required for quick lap times. I ride an 07 zx10, the main reason being that it is a beast and it has no technology. But I have ridden newer bikes and am a lot quicker on them without much effort, hence I am faster and safer. Just my 2 cents. Keep on posting man, love the videos dude, and the accent LOL

      stefano cioni No i haven't. I respectfully disagree though. you said you're faster "without" much effort.I like to put the forth the effort to learn to control it myself.Its possible to ride without them.Look at these guys riding an h2 and see the difference in skill...

    I'm not that good of a rider, I mean I'm alright for having been riding for a little less than a year. I personally welcome rider aids, the more the better, for me personally it'll make up for my lack of skill. Traction control, abs, all that bullshit gimme gimme gimme. I'll continue to build my skills but I don't wanna get fucked up in the process
    Whichever of the new liter bikes is the least powerful is the one that I'm going to buy with ALL the rider aids on that joint. If they made the gixxer 750 with rider aids I'd just buy that, don't even need all the power of a 1000 but something stronger than a 600. Might just get the 959 panigale since it's not quite 1000 and pad my seat from the heat lol. I'm not that good of a rider and that's exactly why I want rider aids.......not offended btw

      You're right, like anything else you learn by doing. All the new liter bikes look so damn good, naturally you're gonna want one, being able to ride one is another story hahaha. I'm workin on it though my dude. Good video as usual

      Night Rider!!... What up from a Bruh in Japan!...a shout out!
      Yeah...you have a point but I think that you kinda sum it up by just stating that the move was done by manufacturers to "gain more market share along with improving the safety quotients for the company.
      Of course all makers want more sales and if you can get a percent of that increase by making most of your production line rideable to all then it should be put in place.
      As you advocated,..noobs are gonna want cool ass 1000cc bikes from jump street but fear there abilities so they would be interested in "riding aid equipped" bikes. So they can ride'em and check in with other riders/veterans..to catch up or be compatible so to speak.
      So this works well for the parties involved; makers and customers alike.
      So,..like the other commentators here,..like such an quipped bike??...great!!.. buy it,..ride it with it on or off...you reasons,..your choice.
      On the Moro GP tip tho'...that system is there to "assist" the rider's techniques and improve lap times and endurance/performance issues on parts during a race. It could also be said that,...the tech is "tested" there for benefits in production of future bikes thus sales.
      So that's my 2cents!!...keep up your blogs cause they do touch on good issues for the riding community worldwide!!...thumbs up Bruh!...(but do prepare your ego for debate tho')..👍🏾👨🏾
