    One tip when using a roller to spread the compound is to slightly moisten the sleeve before dunking. This helps with the initial adhesion to the new knap.

    I'm a plasterer in England, but also live part time in Canada, so am interested in your techniques and materials for skimming a ceiling. I was curious as to that little motion you were doing along the edge. I'll give it a try. Normally I just firmly press the trowel up into the edges/corners, then afterwards run the narrow edge of the trowel along the lengths of the corners to ensure a straight and true corner.

    Very enjoying your videos, btw the camera auto focus system uses contracts focus. Since interior mostly white it is very hard for the camera to find focus. Only thing you can do is using smaller Aperture like f5.6 to f8 by using manual focus that will put everything in focus but you have to prefocus before filming. Another option is using auto face detection on the camera that will focus on you with combination of f5.6 to f8. This will keep you focus yet allowing few feet of focus, yet you will need more light to compensate the depth of field.
    Question for you, I did remove my popcorn ceiling and did two coats of mud but after three days the surface is still feeling soft. Did I used the wrong mud or still needing time to cure. Yes, I’m from Vancouver and using the Classic finish mud from Homedepot. Thank you and keep up the good work!

    • @zmania101
      @zmania101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just removed ~200sqft of popcorn, and have another 1k to do. Important part is to get your texture tested for asbestos - I bought a $30 kit on Amazon. Just take some scrapings (dry scrape, wear a mask and treat it as if it were asbestos) from each of the rooms you are doing, bag it up and send it in. Once you've got a negative test, use a garden sprayer filled with water (with a drop of dish soap in it), and do a couple of passes over the popcorn, letting the water soak for 10min or so between passes. You'll want the popcorn to be saturated, but not dripping. Then you can just use a standard 14" knife, the texture should come off like butter. If it's still not coming off, use some more water.

      Skim coating is used on walls or ceilings that have imperfections. Such as, bad drywall repairs, poorly done wall paper removal, textured ceilings, and also on larger walls a skim coat might be done after taping so the paint looks the same all over the wall. Paint will look different on the spots where the seems are so a skim coat evens things out. Ben makes it look easy, but skim coating can be messy and difficult without practice.

    swimming pool trowel will help alleviate some lines as you spread. A bucket of water and a light wet sponge float will help you smooth so you can avoid sanding all together.on the final coat. sanding is no fun .. neither is the dust. USG DIAMOND VENEER BASECOAT is a great economical two-coat drywall finishing plaster that mixes easily and offers superior coverage. You could also use a bonding agent to coat the drywall first to provide MAX adherence .. like larson's plaster weld. Thanks for sharing your technique !!

    How best to tape around a replacement ventilation fan when there are some larger gaps to cover (due to larger older fan) around the edges? Gaps are some places about 1" and not regular.

    If you have a couple of light grey spots can you paint over them or do you have to re-skim?

    I am about to remove popcorn ceilings. So is it best to prime the whole ceiling after this step then paint?

    The video is GREAT. I'm attempting to do a ceiling. What type of mud do you use for the ceiling. In your other videos you mention the desire for 'hot' mud. Is this loose hot 'setting type' or some other type of mud?

    Skim coat takes time, but it fills in little scratches and pin holes. It’s worth it to do this because you’ll get a smooth finish ceiling. Then prime and paint it.
