With minimal drywall tools and a house that had foundation issues terrible texture this is very difficult and I'm losing hope it will ever look right...the ceiling looks the worst.😢 these videos are encouraging I will get there.
I am a wallpaper hanger. We typically do our own prep which can include anything under the sun then bring it to a level 5. I had to laugh when you said 99 percent of the time you don't need to skim coat. In my trade it's the reverse (for most residential coverings). I LOVE that you realize the difference between level 5 and 4! In my area, most drywall contactors will point at a taped and beded wall and say "what do you mean? It IS a level 5. Just feel it" lol Nice to know I was taught the correct way. Almost every video I saw was exactly how we've always done it. Not to mention, I picked up a few new tricks from you. Thanks!
Awesome Michael. Yeah, so many drywallers don't get that a true level 5 takes more work than just doing a great finish job. But the 99% thing was more for novices as it seems they so often feel that every project has to end with a skim coat, or that a skim coat will fix most any defect, so I wanted to clarify that for them. Thank you for this video. The most honest and straightforward I've seen. All other videos teach you how to skim coat but don't deal with whether or not it is actually necessary. Because of this video, I'm convinced I can get by with just minor fixes/patches and then a nice paint job. Bless you!
This was so helpful. After misinterpreting that I could skim coat over a painted popcorn ceiling, it bubbled up and I ended up having to scrape everything off and start all over. This was after the second coat and it looked like glass lol. Now I only have paint the ceiling and do a few repairs here and there

I am doing the same. This video helped me to see that I don't need to skim coat all of the walls. I can mostly fix/patch where necessary and then paint and get the same good results.

01/19/2022: Hello, I am almost 76-years old with limited working endurance. I have small small bathroom that I removed the wall paper. I spackled the bad spots, but I do not want to sand and breath in all that dust sanding. So, I thought I would just paint over the wall with a thick nap roller. When it dried, I was going to use a large sponge with big holes, and dab over the painted area to hide any imperfections and leave a slight texture look. But, looking at your video, I might try what you did here. I just want to hide some spackle repair with minimal amount of work. Thank you for the repair tips, and I will watch more of your videos. One note, skim coating is also used in recording studios, but the goal there is just adding a final layer of mass to the wall, over 3 or more layers of 5/8 to help even the littlest with increasing acoustic isolation.
Thanks for your informative videos, Guy! Just to verify, for new sheetrock installs, basically the entire surfaces of the new drywall should be skimmed so as not to have different sheen / finish levels appearing in the paint - is this correct? I plan on encapsulating many wall surfaces with 1/4" drywall because the previous owner painted OVER their wallpaper, so I believe a new sheetrock veneer will be the most practical solution.
You really only need to skim coat everything if you’re doing a smooth finish. If you’re doing a texture finish, you will prime afterwards and then two coats of paint. But it’s not a bad idea to prime before you texture also.

Many cracks come down to the location of the seam, like the corner you showed with the crack going across the ceiling. Placement of the board that way works well for the rocker but always cracks from load. I leave my seam at least 1' from any corner if not 2' if manageable. A corner should always float under at least a portion of the sheet.

Thank you so much! How thick should the rollers cover? I put it on a roller and after using the knife, it was leaving spots here and there as it was quite thin. It became almost like a popcorn wall after I skim-coated it (I removed the wall paper). Second question is that how to fix the cracks: (1) wall movement type of cracks, (2) uneven surface level (I stopped removing one section of the wall paper because it was acting as an ahensive of a fake wall, and now it is leaving a thin gap).

I would add that if you are not trying to cover any texture, meaning it is new drywall, you don’t need to leave any mud on the wall. Wipe it tight. You are only covering the (texture) of the face paper.
Hi, diy-er Cheryl here. How do you recommend prepping a wall that has a sandy texture? I want to update the color and the sand texture seems like it would look a little crazy if I just painted over it. I've never skim coated anything and am a little apprehensive. Thanks in advance.

I have a split level entrance in my house. Stairs going up on the left. Stairs going down on the right. Staircase wall going down has sunlight coming in through the glass in our front door at a sharp 90° angle. Every seam and mud coating sticks out like a sore thumb even with flat light gray paint. Float out the seams and the screws they coated and sanded poorly? Or skim coat it all? Overall there is like 4 vertical lines of mud thst are 6+ feet tall, and the drywall joint is ugly too. I do own a Level 5 24" blade
What about a heavily painted and textured surface? My house was built in the 80's and has lots of DIY patches, small holes from drywall screws from hanging stuff, etc. My thought after youtube research is to hit it with a power sander, fill in the holes, prime it, then skim coat to be able to spray on new texture. Am I on the right track?
You say to use stainblocking primer on water stains before skim coating. What happens if you don't use stainblocking primer first? I'm guessing because the primer seals the damaged drywall, preventing bubbles. I don't think the stain would show through the mud layers...
I removed shiplap inside of our house that was installed probably when the house was built. There was nail holes everywhere and torn paper from them gluing the Shiplap. I sanded the wall and mudded the joist that they did not tape. I filled in the holes and the next day there were lines everywhere that looked like ghost image of the ship lap. I went ahead and did a skim coat after prepping with Pro999, which still got blisters. I let it set for 24 hours and came home to see that the ghosting bled through the skim. What gives? I sanded the wall before I skimmed. I don't want to waste anymore time skimming. Should I just put in new dry wall?
I have a 30 year old house, drywalls probably been painted 5x. Repaired all nail pops so many smooth spackle spots. How does one blend those smooth areas with old paint texture that appears smooth itself but actually when you look close it’s not?
Depends on why it's not, but make sure you feather all around the repair, and then you might have to roll some drywall mud on it very thin with a short nap roller. If you try that, put 1/2 cup of paint in a gallon of mud, it'll roll smoother.
will skim coating a wall make it close to as hard or strong as a plaster wall? I have Plaster board from 1956 and trying to match it with drywall has been a challenge. Thanks for the video !!
I wonder if it is necessary to skimcoat an entire wall while doing reno. For instance, I do a lot of repairs where a wall is old, already painted a few times but has some deep building sinking cracks, after I fill them and sand them they still seem too be uneven and show from under the paint later. It's easier to skimcoat the entire wall, but takes more time, but is there a way to just smooth those patches and kracks???? I'm talking hard plaster and gipsum plaster on brickwalls.
Great video I'm a carpenter, the wall paper took the top layer, the white off the sheet rock and I have a lot of paper tags. Will the gard take care of that I plan on putting the pole sander on it to see if it remove the tags/ flaps, about the size of your little finger nail if that big.
Please help 🙏😊 1. How do you fix areas where the drywall mud is too thick and sticks out without having to scrape it off? I have one small trouble area that I’ve been trying to thin out. 2. In addition to that, I have two interior windows that are floor to ceiling with 2 out of 10 inches at the bottom which is covered in mud. To the left of the window I have 4 out of 28 inches covered in mud so far, but will need additional mud to feather out the edges more. Further down the wall is similar with 8 out of 28 inches covered with mud which will also need additional feathering. I don’t want to try to scrape around the windows because I discovered some damage to the edges of the drywall which was hidden beneath the thick framing the previous owner had placed around the windows. I was considering skim coating those two areas Since they are not very large and it is taking me a very long time to try to even out the edges with sanding due to the thick amount of mud that was required. The space between the windows is 56 inches and has a cracked joint that will need to be fixed first before I finish with the drywall mud, but it’s a larger area so I don’t think that needs skim coating. Do you agree?
Can you skim coat over a painted wall and ceiling? I my bathroom I originally had wallpaper and it got taken down poorly left lots of uneven texture and defects and now we have holes from anchors and stuff hung and some drywall seam paper peaking through on the ceiling corners. So we are removing our own popcorn ceiling, not much defects at all, mostly smooth, what type of primer can we use to seal the dry wall so we can be ready to paint? One room we did is living room, removed popcorn ceiling, patched, skimmed, sanded and after 100 yrs the living room is finally done & ready to be painted 🥴 Pls help us with what type of sealer/paint to use so we dont have to skim coat. ☹️
Hi, my contractor just removed my popcorn ceiling with the exception of an area that was difficult to remove. He started skim coating the rest of the ceiling. Im nervous. Why wouldn't you just remove all the popcorn first?

I wish to skim coat a bathroom reducing the heavy orange peel finish, so I will do just one coat for a light texture. My question is: the walls are painted with a semigloss paint. I had to put up an 8x4 sheet rock on the garage ceiling because the other one fell down and broke due to moisture and the rest of the ceiling is popcorn and it was built in 1988 someone suggested that I needed to have the ceiling scraped and skim coated. I haven’t decided what I needed to do yet. I know I never can match, new popcorn to old popcorn. Do I need to tape and mud the new sheet rock first before I have the ceilings scraped if I choose to do that?
I have lath and plaster walls with so drywall patches, multiple layers of paint and multiple spots with uneven cracks filled. Cracks on every wall and the ceiling. The room is curved where the wall and the ceiling meet. I have refilled the cracks with a flex filler for plaster walls. But I don’t know if I should skim coat or what to do from here. What advice would you have? Do you do video consultations?

I have a very old house and on some walls I think I need to skim coat in order to smooth over the cracks(I have taped and covered them) and the uneven bulges(which I also leveled). But my question is: do I need to put something down on the old walls to make the skim coat adhere to the parts of the walls that are just fine and have paint, in some cases it is a gloss paint, very old gloss paint. My house is 1927 and who knows what's going on with the history of these walls. I really do not want to see my work come peeling off or cracking, if ya know what I mean. Thanks!!!!
I always sand painted surfaces well, with coarse 80 grit paper to give the mud tooth to bite onto. Make sure it's clean too so you might clean it with TSP or Krud Kutter, etc. And thanks for being a subscriber and helping me reach my goal of 100,000 subs by my birthday in June of 2021!
So I have a ton of brown paper spots in a room in my house where I removed the previous owners DIY featuring liquid nails. Removing that subsequently forced me to rip up 10+ coats of paint off the whole room. I used guards on the brown paper spots which were huge and covering the lower half of the walls and I did a few coats of that. Then I used a ridiculous amount of fiber mesh tape and used quick mud to patch it all. I finally sanded all of it now and I’m wondering if my next step should just be to skim coat the whole room or if I can do a few other tough up patches with quick mud and go right to texturing?? It’s the whole room… so I was thinking a skim coat might be necessary, but the patches pretttty much covered the walls. I’m trying to save myself time so I can get to painting faster. Thoughts?
Depends on what texture you are applying? A hand texture, just apply it, a light orange peel, I'd probably skim coat it. The heavier the texture the less need for a skim coat, and the better you are at getting it smooth, the less you need to skim.
I’m going to do a knockdown texture and I have the air compressor hopper so I can apply it with a spray. I guess I don’t know quite how heavy I need to do it. But it does need to be applied to the entire room, because I removed all of the paint by scraping and peeling and then mega patching 😂

Thanks for the videos, they really help a novice like myself. One question if I may. I am removing old wallpaper and there is some slight brown paper damage, which i will seal with Gardz and mud over. My plan is to do a knockdown texture after the repairs. Is there any need to skimcoat the entire wall? I'm thinking that the thickness of the rolled on mud and the inherent coarseness of the finish would make it unnecessary.

I’ve tried spraying texture and knocking it down or waiting for paint to get tacky and then rolling it again but unfortunately to no avail. Any advice on this?
I can't find a video on skim coating textured plaster walls and ceilings. I want to make them smooth. I will fix all plaster cracks first and then I plan to skim coat all plaster ceilings and walls to make them all smooth. Is there any prep work I need to do to the plaster wall first? I had a double atrium door removed from my bedroom outside wall removed, and replaced it with a small window 3' x 2' centered in the middle of the wall where the double door was......the sheet rock that was put in to fill in the hole from the large door is now proud and I don't know how to mud to make the wall flat to the corner of the room on each side of that small widow to the corner of the wall . The wall is about 12- 14 ft long,.......can you help?
When I bought my home the walls were all painted with an off white color and were basically ready for me to repaint them to any color I wanted. In my dining room I have chair rails about 36-40 inches up from the floor around the room. I chose to wallpaper the lower area around the room and I painted the walls from the chair rails up to the ceiling. Here 20 years later I removed the wallpaper and I want to repaint the area below the chair rails one color and above the rails a different color. I did a pretty good job removing the wallpaper with a few minor spots under the rail that tore parts of of the sheet rock down to the brown paper. I purchased the Pro-999 R35 and I plan to touch those spots up before I paint and I wanted to use the USG All PURPOSE Joint Compound to smear over those spots and sand them to blend in before I paint. My question is,…will using a hand sander to go over the wallpaper area with 80 grit sandpaper suffice so I can begin to get it painted? Can we put lining paper on wood panel with grooves. If yes will it not bubble up from the grooves if those grooves are not filled. What is the best and easy diy way to make wood panle smooth?
Thanks for the quick reply! So I seal any brown paper spots with Pro-999, then repair with mud, then sand smooth just those repaired spots but not the entire undamaged wall parts, and no need to skim coat. Can I then prime and paint over that, and the sanded repaired parts won’t show under different light?
That’s really a complex question that I can’t answer without being there. If you want to guarantee that, skim coat the whole thing. Sand anything that’s painted first. Then prime it and put two coats of paint on
This is a great video, thank you! How should I prep the wall before skim coating over texture? I have semi-gloss paint over knockdown. I am planning to wash with TSP, sand, and paint with primer before skimming. Is that right? What kind of primer is good over paint but under the mud?
Great video. We have a peeling paint issue, where all the paint on the walls of the house we just bought is failing to adhere. We scraped off all the finish layer of paint, and in some areas pulled off the primer with the paint, down to the bare drywall. Would you recommend skim coating all the walls to even it out and create a surface to allow painting, or scrape and sand off the remaining primer down to the bare drywall? Fresh primer and/or paint won't adhere to this remaining base layer, I tried it in a test spot.
Well the general rule is you need to get down to sound surfaces meaning not peeling flaking or resisting adhesion. Whether to skim coat or not depends on how smooth you want it.
Sounds to me like you are putting latex over oil. If this is the case you should really consider sanding the entire wall, then priming it (have your primer tinted to 75% of your topcoat color) then apply 2 coats your topcoat paint. Check the adhesion of your primer after you apply it to your sanded wall by trying to scrape it off with your fingernails.
@@TheMwasson I've discovered what the problem was. It appears the previous owner had done a level 5 finish with some sort of product that doesn't seem to be drywall compound as it was very chalky and became soggy when moistened with a damp rag (even after it was on the walls for like 15 years) it was then painted with a primer + paint product...this is why it peeled so easily. So we ended up peeling ALL the paint off (up to the point where it seemed to have good adhesion, like inside corners). Then we primed with an oil-based primer and did some patch skim coats on damaged areas. Next, we'll prime the patched areas and finish with a topcoat.

I have cracking in a plaster walls, i was going to repair the cracks with screws and durabond. Also there are large spots where the paint is peeling. I was planning on skim coating the whole room with all purpose mud, big job, now I'm wondering if I should shim coat or just repair each individual imperfection? Thanks Rick
Skim coating only fixes very minor imperfections which is why I say it’s often overused. Fix each area individually and if there’s a lot of them, then skim coating is not a terrible idea. I am a wallpaper hanger. We typically do our own prep which can include anything under the sun then bring it to a level 5. I had to laugh when you said 99 percent of the time you don't need to skim coat. In my trade it's the reverse (for most residential coverings). I LOVE that you realize the difference between level 5 and 4! In my area, most drywall contactors will point at a taped and beded wall and say "what do you mean? It IS a level 5. Just feel it" lol

Awesome Michael. Yeah, so many drywallers don't get that a true level 5 takes more work than just doing a great finish job. But the 99% thing was more for novices as it seems they so often feel that every project has to end with a skim coat, or that a skim coat will fix most any defect, so I wanted to clarify that for them. This was so helpful. After misinterpreting that I could skim coat over a painted popcorn ceiling, it bubbled up and I ended up having to scrape everything off and start all over. This was after the second coat and it looked like glass lol. Now I only have paint the ceiling and do a few repairs here and there

Absolutely agree that coating a joint is simply another coat on the joint, necessary to achieving a smooth finish less than L5.

01/19/2022: Hello, I am almost 76-years old with limited working endurance. I have small small bathroom that I removed the wall paper. I spackled the bad spots, but I do not want to sand and breath in all that dust sanding. So, I thought I would just paint over the wall with a thick nap roller. When it dried, I was going to use a large sponge with big holes, and dab over the painted area to hide any imperfections and leave a slight texture look. But, looking at your video, I might try what you did here. I just want to hide some spackle repair with minimal amount of work. Thank you for the repair tips, and I will watch more of your videos. One note, skim coating is also used in recording studios, but the goal there is just adding a final layer of mass to the wall, over 3 or more layers of 5/8 to help even the littlest with increasing acoustic isolation.
On certain walls I've used lining paper and that has worked.

Thanks for your informative videos, Guy! Just to verify, for new sheetrock installs, basically the entire surfaces of the new drywall should be skimmed so as not to have different sheen / finish levels appearing in the paint - is this correct? I plan on encapsulating many wall surfaces with 1/4" drywall because the previous owner painted OVER their wallpaper, so I believe a new sheetrock veneer will be the most practical solution.
You really only need to skim coat everything if you’re doing a smooth finish. If you’re doing a texture finish, you will prime afterwards and then two coats of paint. But it’s not a bad idea to prime before you texture also.

Thanks. Most products are real similar so if I show a Lightweight product, and you can get a lightweight like it, it should work fine.
Many cracks come down to the location of the seam, like the corner you showed with the crack going across the ceiling. Placement of the board that way works well for the rocker but always cracks from load. I leave my seam at least 1' from any corner if not 2' if manageable. A corner should always float under at least a portion of the sheet.

Thank you so much! How thick should the rollers cover? I put it on a roller and after using the knife, it was leaving spots here and there as it was quite thin. It became almost like a popcorn wall after I skim-coated it (I removed the wall paper). Second question is that how to fix the cracks: (1) wall movement type of cracks, (2) uneven surface level (I stopped removing one section of the wall paper because it was acting as an ahensive of a fake wall, and now it is leaving a thin gap).
Skim coat is also necessary for wallpaper removal in my opinion

I would add that if you are not trying to cover any texture, meaning it is new drywall, you don’t need to leave any mud on the wall. Wipe it tight. You are only covering the (texture) of the face paper.

Hi, diy-er Cheryl here. How do you recommend prepping a wall that has a sandy texture? I want to update the color and the sand texture seems like it would look a little crazy if I just painted over it. I've never skim coated anything and am a little apprehensive. Thanks in advance.
I would scrape and sand the entire surface first and then skim coat it if I wanted to go smooth or to change the texture to something else

I have a split level entrance in my house. Stairs going up on the left. Stairs going down on the right.
Staircase wall going down has sunlight coming in through the glass in our front door at a sharp 90° angle.
Every seam and mud coating sticks out like a sore thumb even with flat light gray paint.
Float out the seams and the screws they coated and sanded poorly? Or skim coat it all?
Overall there is like 4 vertical lines of mud thst are 6+ feet tall, and the drywall joint is ugly too.
I do own a Level 5 24" blade
I have a true challenge...Mobile home vinyl..I will probably have to remove some..as I do not think I can skim coat this crazy unlevel by a lot! Wall
What about a heavily painted and textured surface? My house was built in the 80's and has lots of DIY patches, small holes from drywall screws from hanging stuff, etc. My thought after youtube research is to hit it with a power sander, fill in the holes, prime it, then skim coat to be able to spray on new texture. Am I on the right track?

What happens if you don't use stainblocking primer first? I'm guessing because the primer seals the damaged drywall, preventing bubbles. I don't think the stain would show through the mud layers...
Stains will come right through drywall mud. You can use the stain blocker after texture if you want
I removed shiplap inside of our house that was installed probably when the house was built. There was nail holes everywhere and torn paper from them gluing the Shiplap. I sanded the wall and mudded the joist that they did not tape. I filled in the holes and the next day there were lines everywhere that looked like ghost image of the ship lap. I went ahead and did a skim coat after prepping with Pro999, which still got blisters. I let it set for 24 hours and came home to see that the ghosting bled through the skim. What gives? I sanded the wall before I skimmed. I don't want to waste anymore time skimming. Should I just put in new dry wall?
I have a 30 year old house, drywalls probably been painted 5x. Repaired all nail pops so many smooth spackle spots. How does one blend those smooth areas with old paint texture that appears smooth itself but actually when you look close it’s not?
Depends on why it's not, but make sure you feather all around the repair, and then you might have to roll some drywall mud on it very thin with a short nap roller. If you try that, put 1/2 cup of paint in a gallon of mud, it'll roll smoother.

You would have to use fast setting joint compound to do that

I wonder if it is necessary to skimcoat an entire wall while doing reno. For instance, I do a lot of repairs where a wall is old, already painted a few times but has some deep building sinking cracks, after I fill them and sand them they still seem too be uneven and show from under the paint later. It's easier to skimcoat the entire wall, but takes more time, but is there a way to just smooth those patches and kracks???? I'm talking hard plaster and gipsum plaster on brickwalls.

Great video I'm a carpenter, the wall paper took the top layer, the white off the sheet rock and I have a lot of paper tags. Will the gard take care of that I plan on putting the pole sander on it to see if it remove the tags/ flaps, about the size of your little finger nail if that big.
Gardz will take care of the majority of it much better than doing nothing.

1. How do you fix areas where the drywall mud is too thick and sticks out without having to scrape it off? I have one small trouble area that I’ve been trying to thin out.
2. In addition to that, I have two interior windows that are floor to ceiling with 2 out of 10 inches at the bottom which is covered in mud. To the left of the window I have 4 out of 28 inches covered in mud so far, but will need additional mud to feather out the edges more. Further down the wall is similar with 8 out of 28 inches covered with mud which will also need additional feathering.
I don’t want to try to scrape around the windows because I discovered some damage to the edges of the drywall which was hidden beneath the thick framing the previous owner had placed around the windows.
I was considering skim coating those two areas Since they are not very large and it is taking me a very long time to try to even out the edges with sanding due to the thick amount of mud that was required.
The space between the windows is 56 inches and has a cracked joint that will need to be fixed first before I finish with the drywall mud, but it’s a larger area so I don’t think that needs skim coating.

You don't need an airless to spray it on, you can use the same hopper gun you use to shoot on popcorn ceilings.
But it's way slower, way rougher and splotchier.

Can you skim coat over a painted wall and ceiling? I my bathroom I originally had wallpaper and it got taken down poorly left lots of uneven texture and defects and now we have holes from anchors and stuff hung and some drywall seam paper peaking through on the ceiling corners. I had to put up an 8x4 sheet rock on the garage ceiling because the other one fell down and broke due to moisture and the rest of the ceiling is popcorn and it was built in 1988 someone suggested that I needed to have the ceiling scraped and skim coated. I haven’t decided what I needed to do yet. I know I never can match, new popcorn to old popcorn. Do I need to tape and mud the new sheet rock first before I have the ceilings scraped if I choose to do that?

The room is curved where the wall and the ceiling meet. I have refilled the cracks with a flex filler for plaster walls. But I don’t know if I should skim coat or what to do from here. I have a very old house and on some walls I think I need to skim coat in order to smooth over the cracks(I have taped and covered them) and the uneven bulges(which I also leveled). But my question is: do I need to put something down on the old walls to make the skim coat adhere to the parts of the walls that are just fine and have paint, in some cases it is a gloss paint, very old gloss paint. My house is 1927 and who knows what's going on with the history of these walls. I really do not want to see my work come peeling off or cracking, if ya know what I mean. Thanks!!!!
I always sand painted surfaces well, with coarse 80 grit paper to give the mud tooth to bite onto. Make sure it's clean too so you might clean it with TSP or Krud Kutter, etc. And thanks for being a subscriber and helping me reach my goal of 100,000 subs by my birthday in June of 2021!
So I have a ton of brown paper spots in a room in my house where I removed the previous owners DIY featuring liquid nails. Removing that subsequently forced me to rip up 10+ coats of paint off the whole room. I used guards on the brown paper spots which were huge and covering the lower half of the walls and I did a few coats of that. Then I used a ridiculous amount of fiber mesh tape and used quick mud to patch it all. I finally sanded all of it now and I’m wondering if my next step should just be to skim coat the whole room or if I can do a few other tough up patches with quick mud and go right to texturing?? It’s the whole room… so I was thinking a skim coat might be necessary, but the patches pretttty much covered the walls. I’m trying to save myself time so I can get to painting faster. Thoughts?
Depends on what texture you are applying? A hand texture, just apply it, a light orange peel, I'd probably skim coat it. The heavier the texture the less need for a skim coat, and the better you are at getting it smooth, the less you need to skim.
I’m going to do a knockdown texture and I have the air compressor hopper so I can apply it with a spray. I guess I don’t know quite how heavy I need to do it. But it does need to be applied to the entire room, because I removed all of the paint by scraping and peeling and then mega patching 😂

I am removing old wallpaper and there is some slight brown paper damage, which i will seal with Gardz and mud over. My plan is to do a knockdown texture after the repairs. Is there any need to skimcoat the entire wall? I'm thinking that the thickness of the rolled on mud and the inherent coarseness of the finish would make it unnecessary.
I skimcoat less than 2 times a year. It’s way overused, so just finish it well and texture.

I can't find a video on skim coating textured plaster walls and ceilings. I want to make them smooth. I will fix all plaster cracks first and then I plan to skim coat all plaster ceilings and walls to make them all smooth. Is there any prep work I need to do to the plaster wall first? Depending on your situation you might need to use plaster weld. I also recommed using durabond 90. NOT "Easy Sand".

I had a double atrium door removed from my bedroom outside wall removed, and replaced it with a small window 3' x 2' centered in the middle of the wall where the double door was......the sheet rock that was put in to fill in the hole from the large door is now proud and I don't know how to mud to make the wall flat to the corner of the room on each side of that small widow to the corner of the wall . The wall is about 12- 14 ft long,.......can you help?

When I bought my home the walls were all painted with an off white color and were basically ready for me to repaint them to any color I wanted. In my dining room I have chair rails about 36-40 inches up from the floor around the room. I chose to wallpaper the lower area around the room and I painted the walls from the chair rails up to the ceiling. Here 20 years later I removed the wallpaper and I want to repaint the area below the chair rails one color and above the rails a different color. I did a pretty good job removing the wallpaper with a few minor spots under the rail that tore parts of of the sheet rock down to the brown paper. I purchased the Pro-999 R35 and I plan to touch those spots up before I paint and I wanted to use the USG All PURPOSE Joint Compound to smear over those spots and sand them to blend in before I paint. My question is,…will using a hand sander to go over the wallpaper area with 80 grit sandpaper suffice so I can begin to get it painted? Yes, just sand it with 80 grit, clean off the dust, then prime and paint.

Can we put lining paper on wood panel with grooves. If yes will it not bubble up from the grooves if those grooves are not filled. What is the best and easy diy way to make wood panle smooth?
Clean it all, sand it, dust it, fill lines with mud, tape joints and finish like normal.

So I seal any brown paper spots with Pro-999, then repair with mud, then sand smooth just those repaired spots but not the entire undamaged wall parts, and no need to skim coat. Can I then prime and paint over that, and the sanded repaired parts won’t show under different light?
That’s really a complex question that I can’t answer without being there. If you want to guarantee that, skim coat the whole thing. Sand anything that’s painted first. Then prime it and put two coats of paint on

Great video. We have a peeling paint issue, where all the paint on the walls of the house we just bought is failing to adhere. We scraped off all the finish layer of paint, and in some areas pulled off the primer with the paint, down to the bare drywall. Would you recommend skim coating all the walls to even it out and create a surface to allow painting, or scrape and sand off the remaining primer down to the bare drywall? Fresh primer and/or paint won't adhere to this remaining base layer, I tried it in a test spot.
Well the general rule is you need to get down to sound surfaces meaning not peeling flaking or resisting adhesion. Whether to skim coat or not depends on how smooth you want it.
Sounds to me like you are putting latex over oil. If this is the case you should really consider sanding the entire wall, then priming it (have your primer tinted to 75% of your topcoat color) then apply 2 coats your topcoat paint. Check the adhesion of your primer after you apply it to your sanded wall by trying to scrape it off with your fingernails.
@@TheMwasson I've discovered what the problem was. It appears the previous owner had done a level 5 finish with some sort of product that doesn't seem to be drywall compound as it was very chalky and became soggy when moistened with a damp rag (even after it was on the walls for like 15 years) it was then painted with a primer + paint product...this is why it peeled so easily.
So we ended up peeling ALL the paint off (up to the point where it seemed to have good adhesion, like inside corners). Then we primed with an oil-based primer and did some patch skim coats on damaged areas. Next, we'll prime the patched areas and finish with a topcoat.

I have cracking in a plaster walls, i was going to repair the cracks with screws and durabond. Also there are large spots where the paint is peeling. I was planning on skim coating the whole room with all purpose mud, big job, now I'm wondering if I should shim coat or just repair each individual imperfection? Thanks Rick
Skim coating only fixes very minor imperfections which is why I say it’s often overused. Fix each area individually and if there’s a lot of them, then skim coating is not a terrible idea.
