People have been sleeping on Dionne. Her range was great...and she is a technical singer because of talent and education. She also had this trick she would do where she backs away from the mic to showcase the power of her voice and continues singing and the audience can still hear her. She also earned a doctorate......earned!!!! Not a honorary. Lol

I played with Dionne as her woodwind soloist for 2 years. She was ALWAYS kind and gracious to me & I respected her deeply. I have many fond memories of her. John Phillips.

She really is a Legend. My adult children love her but their contemporaries dont know much about her because her best work came out in the early 60's when I was a child they know her because I played her all of the time. Burt Bacharach, Hal Davis & Dionne were magic. When they broke up none of them seemed to recapture what they had together. I am sorry, I think Dionne can outsing Aretha...that is just my humble opinion. I just preferred her voice and style over any other of her contemporaries. I never cared much for anything she did after leaving the guys until she got with Clive Davis, but even then it was never the same for me.

The older musica is, was and will ALWAYS be better, because that was true raw talent that went into songs and musica...I like newer musica too, but I own more older musica, once you get introduced to the older musica, I was introduced to a lot of older musica, having older sibling's and one parent who loved listening to musica and dancing....It's in my blood.....Especially the dancing....I am one Israelite who has got rhythm and ain't shamed to say it and show it!

Thank you so much for this. I always wondered how a girl out of Jersey rocketed to the top seemingly from no where with a such a great unique sound. I was fortunate to meet her at her dressing room at the Apollo Theatre in the 60s. She was gracious and warm. I’m glad she’s still gracing us with her talent many decades later.
Aside from Whitney, Dee-Dee had the voice in that family. Her voice was incredible. I think she didn’t acquire the success that Dionne because she did not have that star quality. She was a little rough around the edges, heavier and didn’t fit the beauty standards of the time, but she definitely had the voice. “Foolish Fool” is one of my favorites of hers. Like a lot of siblings of super stars, she was overshadowed. Aretha’s sisters suffered the same fate. She was also known to like the company of women. She didn’t announce that she was a lesbian. At that time it was just unspoken, but she didn’t hide it either. It just wasn’t acceptable at the time. She also suffered from drug addiction for many years.
In Russia we say "Talents need help, mediocrity will break through on their own." Dee Dee was very talented and she was herself. There could be no question that she was playing some show business games or intrigues. She just wanted to sing! She was openly gay, unfortunately she did not meet her soul mate. She suffered from diabetes and arthritis, which also affected her life.
That woman was a child molester. Whitney Houston's brother spoke about it in a documentary.

If I'm not mistaken, Big Mama Thornton who wrote You Ain't Nothin', but a Hound dog, Elvis Presley or his manager or recording agent bought the song (I'm surprised they didn't just straight out steal it) from Sister Thornton for maybe $100.00 and Elvis recorded it, well it ended up being his first huge hit for him and the sales of that song alone made hundreds of thousands, if not million's more than his people paid for the rights to that song.

Ms. Warwick is CLASS. I will never forget my mother and I running into her on Chestnut Street in Philly, Pa. when I was a little girl. My mother, who was a celebrity buff said, "That's Dionne Warwick!". Dionne was walking with this big burly sloppily dressed caucasian guy - I am guessing he was her bodyguard. Dionne was dressed to the nines in this classic pastel colored suit, pumps and a handbag (think Jaqueline Kennedy a la mocha). And let me tell you television did not do this woman justice; she was drop dead gorgeous- pretty smooth skin, gorgeous smile and those cheekbones and facial structure that just won't quit! Very petite, sophisticated and classy! I asked for her autograph and she graciously signed a piece of paper and gave it to me. I remember sitting in my room listening to her songs as a little girl: Walk on By; Message to Michael; Don't make me over, Raindrops Keep Fallin on my Head. She is one of the foremost artists who influenced my singing style. Her delivery, range and style are inimitable. Love me some Ms. Warwick.

Ashley, Dionne was into psychics for a long time...she added an E to her last name in the 70s because a psychic told her it would add to her success. The backlash she faced because of the Psychic Hotline fiasco was no doubt embarrassing, but she actually seemed to believe in it. On another note, my dad dragged me to one of her concerts and it was phenomenal! Stage presence, wardrobe on point....and that voice was everything you heard on wax TO THE 10TH POWER.

I've loved Ms. Dionne Warwick since I was a young child. She should get KENNEDY HONORS for her iconic hits of the sixties with David & Bacharach, Ms. Warrick is over eighty years old and needs to be honored. As far as her personality is concerned, it really is her choice to be gracious to her fans or a witch and being the latter is the chance she takes.
My parents introduced me to her music as a child. They played her vinyls all the time.

I love her music and always have. In the early 80's I got a ticket for me to see her performance at the Chicago theater with Johnny Mathis, I was in college but working, so I. buy a ticket and it was very pricey. I rushed from work to get there and she never comes on stage. She just never comes out. I was heartbroken. I use to pretend to be her and sing her songs with a hairbrush. Johnny came out and said that she had the flu and wouldn't be coming out. He gave us a wonderful show without her. It was unsetting because the ticket was so pricey and of course with him coming out there was no refund. Now, Diana Ross came to Chicago and I bought a ticket to see her at Poplar Creek and I went and she came out and said that she wasn't feeling well, but we'd see how things go.
She did her best for us. She left the stage briefly only twice, and you could see that she was really sick and trying. I think we got a little above an hour from her, when the stage manager came out and said that she was throwing up in the back and was just too sick to continue and she really apologized for not finishing the show. He hoped that we'd forgive her and we all cheered. The next time she came was at Arie Crown and I bought my expensive ticket again and She gave us quite a show! It was over 3 hours.
I will never go see Dionne again. She's such an unbelievable talent, but her lack of respect for others bothers me.

Loved your fun delivery. Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson were my favorite singers, with Nancy being my special favorite. It amazed me that they were close friends and yet hearing what different people they were. Nancy was always so kind to her fans. I was also disappointed when when after Nancy's passing, Dionne was asked to comment on their friendship and she said they met at the Grammy Awards when Nancy won for R&B with How Glad I Am, over Dionne's Walk on By. And Dionne said Nancy sang jazz and never should have been nominated in R&B. Truthfully I thought both ladies were slighted and under appreciated by the Grammys and it would be Dionne who would break the barrier and win in the Pop category. I was just disappointed that she threw shade on her old friend, but clearly Ms Warwick was as complicated as the rest of us. And I confess I called Psychic Friends one time for a reading.
