Using the VEVOR Diesel Heater while WINTER Camping Overnight on the Ice

- With some solid ice it was finally time to get out and test the diesel heater for the first night of the season. With an active perch bite it took a while to get setup but once I got the heater pumping it was more then comfortable inside the pop-up hut. Without any complications I was able to run the heater for 16+ hours while I fished, made dinner and slept through the night. Definitely happy with this little heater and ready for more trips out on the ice!

I have never ice fished, but am quite an experienced fisherman. This whole icefishing-camping-on-the-lake thing, is so attractive to me, because you actually camp and fish right next to your bed, its warm, you can cook. weather can be bad,..I mean this is really am awsome way to spend entire weeks during winter season. I would love to try this out.
I love it. I honestly look forward to it each year. I love back country camping, exploring and fishing. Winter time gets a little hard to explore but there is something about camping out on a lake and catching a few fish while your at it. I definitely suggest giving it a shot! It also gets you out there for the prime time moments without setting up in the dark
@@castawaytv i have seen guys pulling real mobile home onto frozen lakes. This is so awsome. Here in germany, there are no frozen lakes, only very rarely.

I love my diesel heater. I just built a mobile hunting/fishing camp out of a school bus. I heat it at night with the diesel and wood stove for cooking and heating during the day.

This actually is in Canada on the St. Lawrence River. This area used to be known for its perch but other than this day I rarely catch any decent sized ones.

you can run these even cheaper, most things running on diesel are pretty lenient on fuel, but since these arent trying to drive an engine but just burning the stuff theyre extra lenient.
kerosene/heating oil, vegetable oil, used motor oil, used vegetable oil etc. ofc depends on what you can get your hands on/whats legal where you are. Used vegetable oil you might even get for free, if you dont mind asking around cooking places that fry stuff.
Obviously any old/used oil you have to filter first and it still might clog up some mesh/filter inside, but these things are build incredibly simple and very easy to just screw open to clean/replace those.
Loved the video. I am building a similar set up with the new SS2 from Hcalory for my Otter flip over, but also plan on using it in my hub style fish tent for winter camping. I am contemplating either installing it inside the tent with the exhaust ported out, or outside the tent with output coming into the tent like you have done. I do like your hard lines instead of flexible hose. Can you tell me what size stove pipe you are using in the video and where did you find the strait piece and elbow fitting?
Thank you! They are 3 in pipes. I picked them up at Home Depot or any local hardware store should have them. I keep the heater outside mainly to keep the noise down especially for filming.

I am seriously interested in this type of heater for my tow behind shanty when chasing walleye on Saginaw bay this year. I am currently use a buddy heater connected to a 20 lb. propane tank. My question is the durability of the heater. Will the heater withstand the bumps and bangs of being towed behind a snowmobile?
I think it would. A bungee on it to secure it would help from to much bouncing. I go down some pretty rugged backroads with it just bouncing around in my truck and I have no issues!
Wow, that heater's fuel pump sure is loud.
If you research it, there are several methods out there to lessen the sound of the pump. My heater is similar but isn’t pre-mounted in a case. I’ve assembled mine inside of a tool box and lined it with sound absorbing foam. Keeps the pump noise to about 50% of it’s typical levels.
Why do I not see anyone insulting the hot air pipe? I would have to believe there would be a lot of heat loss before it even made it inside
This is what I’ve been thinking about as I’ve been getting close pulling the trigger on one of these heaters. I want it to be outside of my truck canopy in -40c weather.. and it’s bound to lose heat during travel down the pipe
I'm working on a hardpipe/ flex insulated supply for mine. The heat loss is huge.

You definitely could and I’m sure it would help. Every time I used it I always had it on a low setting and was more then enough heat to keep me comfortable so I never felt the need.

Yes, I had no issues anytime I’ve used it. Hoping to get out more this winter on some multi day trips. And thank you, you already have enough gear when heading out on the ice. Don’t need to much more lol

I was using a 45 ah battery. Diesel heater is definitely the way to go!

@hunt4me80 longest I’ve done so far was 24 hrs with no issues. I unfortunately haven’t done a multi day trip with it. Hopefully will get the opportunity in the future.

You worry waaaaaaay too much. You would have faired far better by putting the heater inside with you and running the exhaust outside. These heaters will absolutely cook you out of your tent if you let them. I run mine in a HF Apache box and mounted it to the side of my rig. I run it in the dead of winter while camping and the thing has NEVER let me down.
There is a dark side, however. Do get into the habit of carrying spare fuel pumps; I carry 2 or three at all times because, for whatever reason, the fuel pumps seem to be the preferred food of the CDH goblins. If I have to take that one downside, then I will gladly take the tradeoff. I run my exhaust (wrapped) out of the bottom of my tent flap and it has never melted anything nor even remotely acted like it wanted to catch on fire; it simply doesn't get hot enough for that when it's wrapped. I find that 21 - 26c seems to be the sweet spot for my heater and it manages to keep both my tent AND my attached vestibule nice and toasty via a y splitter (adjustable). Also, ditch that clumsy metal pipe that you've got running and get an insulated "dryer" hose, it's way better, flexible and it will help minimize your heat loss. Honestly, you could have gotten it to the point that you wouldn't have needed to be bundled up in your tent; for whatever reason you chose not to. You ran the heater straight off of the battery and you absolutely could have run the heater all night on full blast with minimal draw and just a little more fuel consumption. Nice fishing.

Hi, probably a silly question but can you explain what you mean by having spare heat pumps please? I have been hearing about these diesel heaters but I can't find any videos that fully explain them and their maintenance.
I'd never want to get anything I don't fully understand or couldn't properly maintain myself but enjoy learning new things especially when it comes to staying warm in a tent during winter
Fuel pumps, spare fuel pumps. It's the little dose pump that regulates the fuel into the burner. For whatever reason, they have a penchant for going on the fritz often enough that a person should buy 2 or 3 as spares/backup. They are easy enough to change out and inside of 5-10 minutes you're back in business. Let me know if you have any more questions :)@@lizziexkittyx8650
Personally I like the heater outside as I don’t want the noise while filming and honestly I didn’t want it any warmer then it was. That was my first time being out on the ice and being actually comfortable throughout the night. Using propane heat on the past was always still cold and so much condensation. I know having it inside would keep it much warmer but for what I’m doing out there this setup was perfect! They are great little heaters, haven’t had fuel pump issue yet but I should definitely get a couple.

I have 3 diesel heaters.
I have the original Vevor like the one you have. It's about 4 years old. It still works great.
I recently bought a suitcase style from Hcalory. It was a dud out of the box.
Amazon gave me a full refund plus told me to keep it. They can't take back that it has fuel in it.
I went and bought another one except this is a kit meant for RV or camper.
I placed it inside the med size Ridgid tool box. It fits perfectly. I had enough room to place a 20ah battery and a solar controller. I can charge the battery with solar panels.
I did fixed the dud diesel heater. It ended up being dud $20 mother board.
That’s awesome. Ya I love these heaters. We use one at work on the tool trailer to keep the batteries in warm and use as the break room.

I prefer to run my Diesel Heather inside first it consume less fuel because outside the heated air it cool partially if your pipe it not insulated if you keep the heater inside it preheat the air and the exhaust will heat the air even more i build like a radiator to increase the exposure with the air inside the tent so it increases the efficiency of the diesel heater not mention i know if it works or not the battery stay warm and functional all it OK i will try to use Propane next time it more cheaper and burn clean no fumes just mitigation of CO2 !
Don’t you think runnig it inside would burn indoor oxygen? What do you use to insulate the super hot exhaust pipe and how do you route it outside (i have otter i shelter)
I’d rather keep the noise from the heater outside since I am filming and it also worked great from the setup I had. I’m going to try it in colder weather this season to see how it fairs but i was really happy with it. And no condensation like I had with the propane heat

@@castawaytvwell then you need a box with noise dampening sponge ofer termoinsolation and noise cancelation..,....and less fuel consumption !
You cook the wrong way.....if you got one of those portable power bank with inverter and solar panels you can't use a Induction Stove made for camping another big minus i see in this type of TH-cam channels and videos are the pans and pots coated with something similar with Teflon they are toxic just do your research and Reed i prefer stainless steel or iron pans......and the correct way to do french 🍟 fries is complete immersion in cooking oil that oil have to be hot again plenty of tutorials on TH-cam about this subject and special in cooking !

@@dthorne4602 i got 8 kids man and i love camping and fishing expeditions so i buy myself a Mercedes Unimog latest model expensive 🫰 as fuck take my tribe and go to the wild install a big power bank with inverter solar panels custom made a detachable box in the back wen i don't need it and i want to haul dirt or gravel i convert the truck into a dump truck......and it got plenty of hidraulic lines for plenty of accessories......so yeah i made my homeworks !
