Hey just a tip for your popcorn recipe. That small plastic condiment cup that you used has the amount that it can hold on the bottom of the cup. So if you look at the bottom of the cup it will tell you if you are using a 2oz or 4oz so no need to get the measuring spoon dirty.
The deep fry can cut time to less then half if you heat the cast iron in the oven first. You can do all your prep while pan heating so that when you take it to grill your all ready to go in minutes.
Just one small tip for the popcorn. Don't use microwaved butter, it's full of water and will make the popcorn soggy. You can actually use clarified butter and it will come out just like at the movies. You can probably use clarified butter instead of the oil to pop it as well. Clarified butter is super easy to make. Toss some salt in the blender and make it a fine powder and it will stick to the popcorn super well.
Ya I wish I had a camping stove once my wife an I buy a house and move out of our condo I'll probably buy one for that exact purpose. I love fried fish but you just can't do it in the house especially not our 900 sq foot condo hahah. That thing would smell like fish for a week. Thanks for watching and commenting again Dale. Most videos are either paper thin weak batter or they go from start, miss the tricky bit and tadahh! Shop bought onion rings!
Thanks I'm so glad you like the videos. I'm not much of an expert on those thick batter onion rings either. I know they are hard to get that batter to stick. I think I saw someone soak the rings in buttermilk for like an hour once, maybe that will help. I usually just dip it in there real quick then go for the flour, but that doesn't seem to work well. The best way to do canned cinnamon rolls on the griddle is to use a burger press and press them down as flat as you can. You won’t be able to get it super flat, but get it as flat as you can. You will let it cook for about a minute or until you get that sense that they are ready and you flip them and press them down again. You will then let that side cook and warm up the icing in the microwave for like ten seconds. You will use that as a sauce. It creates a pancake-like cinnamon roll. Its delicious. Definitely try this. Also thanks for all the tips. Awesome video! I make popcorn like this when we go camping. Kids love it. One little thing/tip I do is when I put the oil down, I put 1 kernel on and when it pops, I know my oil is ready. I stick with the cast iron for some safety “peace of mind” I preheat with a small butane torch and it takes like 5 mins to warm up the pan then put oil in and in 10 mins oil is at about 325. If you have a outdoor griddle you probably have a burner set up to so if your dead set to deep fry on the griddle you can get oil a 25 50 degrees hotter say around 400 on burner then move skillet to griddle. Which I like that idea because it would be safer incase it spits or boils over a little then no big fire. Coleman makes a camp fire oven to stick on camp fires and wood burning stoves that would be perfect for griddle.
Thanks Randall it was my first time ever doing it and it was super easy. Normally I mess things up but this turned out good hahaha. Thanks for watching again buddy.
Johnny I’ve got coconut oil that I use in my kettle popper. Can I use coconut oil on my griddle? I hope so, because it gives the true movie theater taste. Thanks bro!
Hey Scott, I've never used it but I have seen people use it before so I think your fine. I would just make sure to clean it and wipe off as much as you can when you're done. I'm going to have to give that a try.
I find adding butter to oil-popped popcorn makes it too greasy.... so the best shortcut ever is to just use clarified butter as your popcorn oil. It adds all the flavor you don't have to add any butter after, just some popcorn salt and you're done, it's perfect.
Butter contains about 20% water which will make the popcorn soggy when drizzled on it, so I recommend _not_ doing that. Instead, drizzle the popcorn with some additional clarified butter or ghee which doesn't contain water and won't make the popcorn soggy. If ya want to go all out and make 'movie theater' popcorn, do this: Use butter flavored _coconut oil_ to pop the corn, then drizzle clarified butter or ghee on the popped corn if so desired. Salt it with a product called "Flavacol" popcorn salt which you can find on Amazon (I've never seen it in any grocery store). Instead of drizzling clarified butter or ghee on the popped corn, try using that spray-can butter which you can find next to the popcorn in the grocery store. Pro tip: It might sound gross, but you can save some money by using butter flavored Pam cooking spray instead of the popcorn spray - it's actually the _same_ stuff (butter flavored vegetable oil)! Happy popping!
As always…love this video. Planning on starting my diet next week too, so until then, I have one question. What do you do with the used oil from your “shallow fry” cooks? How do you dispose it?
Thanks Chase! I let the oil cool down then keep it in a gladware container. You don't have to throw it away each time, at restaurants they'll use the oil in there fryer for a few before they change it out. And they're frying multiple things each day. Of course this depends on the restaurant and how much they fry. When I worked at outback we changed it every night bc of the bloomn' onions. Anyways I wouldn't throw it away until you've used it like 10 times or so because it's still good. When you do throw it away still let it cool down then pour it in an empty can or old two liter bottle and throw it away. Just don't put it down the drain.
@@JohnnyBrunet I worked short order and Yuppie venues.for years in Louisiana (North). We would rotate our fryers and filter the oil hot. It held very well. When it was burned out we would pour it over the "Slop" and the guy running the place would sell it to pig farmers in the area.
@@paulsherman7802 Oh wow that's super interesting. I worked at Outback for a year and we had filter four fryers a night so I know exactly whay you're talking about. It was a heck of a process but had to be done daily because we breaded so many items. Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience.
@@JohnnyBrunet I was a manager at Burger King in a past life, and we filtered the oil every night after it had cooled down to about 200* (for safety reasons). When the oil started looking a little _too_ dark, we'd only replace about 75% of it with new oil. The reason we didn't replace it with 100% _new_ oil was because fries cooked in 100% new oil didn't _look_ right and they didn't _taste_ right either! So I use _that_ as a model/example for how I handle my cooking oil today! I always retain about 25% of my old oil to mix with the new oil. That way I get a good head start on the flavor/appearance thing!
The mason jar lid works the best....kinda a pain if you forget the spray....I've been using them for a long time now.....couldn't find and silicone deals so I found lids and I won't never use silicone
Ya Jay I forgot the spray once and it was a mess 😂😂. I e never used the silicone ones but I've heard mixed reviews. I have the Cuisinart metal egg rings too. Those work ok. Thanks for watching and for the tips.
Oh ya if she likes them that way she may love the direct cooking. I also did some cinnamon rolls directly on the griddle which she might like. I will link the video.
Are you talking about for deep frying Travis? I'll have to look for a video where Sam does that. I needed a reason to get a nice stainless steel pan anyways 😏. Thanks for watching man.
Can you put your microwave on the griddle and then do microwave popcorn so you get the best of both worlds? Sort of like you cook the microwave into the popcorn.
Ok...so, could you do the aluminum pan on one of those plug-in kitchen griddles? I would be afraid it would melt and burn down the house. Second, think you could use that movie theater butter coconut oil that makes homemade popcorn taste just like at the movies?
Ya I wouldn't do it inside I'd probably just use the stove. And I've never used the coconut oil but you're the second person to mention that to me this week so I am definitely going to try it. I'm sure it would work just fine as long as the oil gets hot enough. Thanks for watching Lloyd.
Hahaha thanks that was my thoughts exactly before I started making them. Then my first few videos were lie really long of me making 1 egg McMuffin and I realized I wouldn't even watch my own video all the way through 😂. So I changed them around and try to stick what's important and only throw in like one joke. I appreciate you watching.
Ya mine fall over all the time but it's kind of fun. I was going to re shoot then I thought whatever this is more realistic. Thanks so much for watching!
Another great video. I really like you doing the good and the bad. I wonder how the popcorn would come out if you evenly coated the popcorn in a bowl before putting it on the griddle? Sounds like it would be more controlled. Stay well Dave “Obi Wan”
Haha thank you master Kenobi, one day I will truly become a griddle Jedi knight 😂. I do think that would work better. I preheated the oil because that's how this popcorn maker at one of my previous jobs worked. It always said put the oil in for a minute then add the kernels. I'll try your way next time because I'm definitely going to do a kettle corn version. Thanks Dave and have a good one buddy.
@@JohnnyBrunet I have no idea. It just seems like it would be easier to coat it more evenly. I’m not suggesting leaving it for long. Keep up the great videos
@@davidstouffer6561 there's only one way to find out and I'm going to give it a go. I like doing experiments on the griddle. And thank you I'm glad you think the videos are great.
If you really want to save time- you don’t have to coat them all in oil. The kernels in the hot oil will pop and the popped kernels stay on top of the uncooked kernels. Just a bit of science. The smaller denser particles will sink to the bottom whereas the larger, less dense particles will always end up on the top
Melt your butter on the griddle maybe in a pan until the water is boiled out and it stops bubbling. Melting butter in the microwave doesn’t remove the water and turns the popcorn soggy.
Hey your well on your way to making your own ghee or clarified butter! All that's left to do is skim off the whey and milk solids and you've got it! Full disclosure: I've been making my own clarified butter for _years_ now just to dodge the high prices in the grocery stores!
I like the taste of it, I don't think it's too strong or overpowering. I've also heard that movie theaters use coconut oil in there popcorn. I'm going to give that a try.
Haha very good point. The griddle pop corn is just something fun to do after you've already used it and have it on, or a lot of people use these griddles at camp sites and it's really fun there especially with children. I'm certainly not pretending like it's something I do every night. I love some microwave popcorn and a movie or tv show. Can't beat that. Thanks for watching.
That's a fantastic idea Mark. I will have to try that. I needed an excuse to get a pizza peel anyways. Figure I get that first then tell my wife "well we got the peel, might as well buy a pizza oven now!" 😂😂😂
Thanks Ryan I do think that would work. I have those 8X8 baking pans (I call them brownie pans because that's what I make in them). I bet that would fit under the dome and help to contain the popcorn. It wasn't terrible getting it off with a spatula but it did take me a minute. I appreciate you watching.

Pretty much. Like one of those cast iron lodge griddles that you can put on the stove. The seasoning and upkeep is exactly like cast iron. The main benefit is it's a lot larger and like you said, it's outside. Which is great for keeping the kitchen clean. I haven't cooked bacon inside my house for two years and my wife is pretty happy about it. Thanks for watching John.
I've never used natural gas on a residential griddle but I know it's possible with some brands. I don't know if it would cook any better or more evenly but I gotta imagine it's cheaper and very convenient. If I had the ability to do it at my place I would definitely consider it.

I know this is an older video but I found it at random but I really enjoyed it you made this a lot of fun
Thanks so much I'm glad you liked it!
Great tips, thank you. Can’t wait to try the popcorn.
You're welcome Lisa! Try adding sugar to make kettle corn.
Have you tried using a carbon steel pan instead of cast iron? They're a bit less massive and may heat up more quickly.
I have not but you're the second person to recommend that so I need to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.
The cast iron pan can be quickly preheated on a side or stove burner or propane torch, then placed on the griddle and filled with oil.
That's a great point, thank you.
I love the popcorn hack. That looks fun😊🍿👍
Thanks Bobbi it was a lot of fun. Now I need to learn how to do kettle corn.
Really appreciate you gave the things that are good and what not to do.....
You're welcome Sandra I hope it was helpful.
I like to use a wok to deep fry in, on the griddle, because it’s much thinner than cast iron heats up real fast.
That's good to know Vet Dad thanks for sharing. I'll have to get one and give it a try.
That's a good idea Jimmie, I don't have a camp fire stove yet but I want to get one. When I do I will give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Another great video. Loved the popcorn hack
Thanks as always for responding Johnny! I’m sure I’ll never meet you in person, but I feel like I’ve made a friend through your videos.
@@scottk2774 for sure man. Maybe one day we'll meet you never know.
Never tried the griddle popcorn method, but I put butter in my oil on stove. That way the popcorn butters up as it pops
Oh that's a good idea I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for watching.
That sounds good, but does the butter burn at all?
@@webgem14 if you add oil then it will prevent the butter from burning.
@@webgem14 No.
@@JohnnyBrunet I don’t have a griddle yet, but can’t wait to try this once I do.
I find adding butter to oil-popped popcorn makes it too greasy.... so the best shortcut ever is to just use clarified butter as your popcorn oil. It adds all the flavor you don't have to add any butter after, just some popcorn salt and you're done, it's perfect.
Thanks for the tip Andri!
@@MikeInExile thanks so much!
You use a gas burner to heat up the iron pan before using it on the grill of you can place in under the grill where the burner is until you need it
Great hacks Johnny. I never thought of popcorn.
Thanks Jim! Ya it was my first time doing popcorn but it was super easy and turned out great. I appreciate you always watching and commenting.
NOBODY wants a McDonald's anything! 😂😂
I love the popcorn one!!! Gotta try that, yum!
Thanks!
Great hacks, The wire rack is one of my most used things on the griddle, they are really handy and I need to give the Volcano a try!!
Thanks so much Pop! I agree I love my wire rack. Thanks for stopping by and watching.

We like to make Smashed Cinnamon Rolls on the Griddle!! So Good

Wow bro you just made my day with all this stuff you can do on this griddle! Great video! 👍
Thanks so much Danny! I'm glad you liked it man.
Great video man. Thank you!
Thanks Jordan I appreciate you watching it.
Mmm!!! I want some of that popcorn!
🍿😊
Nice, pretty cool ideas. Thanks.
Glad you like them!
@@MikeInExile thanks for the suggestion that makes a lot of sense.
Just what the internet was made for!!!! 😁
Thanks, glad you liked it.
@@JohnnyBrunet Bro!
Love the video! Holy smokes that was A LOT of butter you put on there... I assume that was or the video!
Thanks so much Yussef! Ya I went full movie theater with the butter hahahaha.
I'm about to get a griddle this week!
Congratulations Man! I hope love it as much as I love mine. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and for the tips.
all that and you end up microwaving the butter :) lol Thanks for the video, I'd never even considered some of these.
You're welcome!!
My wife loves extra-cooked biscuits so I might have to try a direct cooking next time around.
Oh ya if she likes them that way she may love the direct cooking. I also did some cinnamon rolls directly on the griddle which she might like. I will link the video.

Use a thick stainless like Sam The Cooking Guy uses on his EVO and it works crazy good !!!! Great stuff
🤣🤣🤣 only one way to find out.
Great suggestions!
Thanks!

Definitely appreciate the length of your videos. It doesn’t take 25 minutes to make a sandwich.
Hahaha thanks that was my thoughts exactly before I started making them. So I changed them around and try to stick what's important and only throw in like one joke. I appreciate you watching.
The volcano collapsing is very realistic. A lot of times they do that in real life!

I do my popcorn in deep, 10” round aluminum foil pan. I still use some to cover n when done, I just pickup the foil pan.
That's a great idea, thanks for sharing.
Melt your butter on the griddle maybe in a pan until the water is boiled out and it stops bubbling. Melting butter in the microwave doesn’t remove the water and turns the popcorn soggy.
Thanks so much I did not know that. I appreciate the tip man.
This is the way.
@@mikeyfoofoo This is the way.
Hey your well on your way to making your own ghee or clarified butter! All that's left to do is skim off the whey and milk solids and you've got it! Full disclosure: I've been making my own clarified butter for _years_ now just to dodge the high prices in the grocery stores!
Preheat your cast iron pan in an oven saves a lot of time ✌️🤠
Great idea Lawrence!
Does peanut oil taste good? I heard that some movie theaters use peanut oil in their popcorn butter.
I like the taste of it, I don't think it's too strong or overpowering. I've also heard that movie theaters use coconut oil in there popcorn. I'm going to give that a try.
Yep, next week.
Bout time to bust out my blackstone ... thanks for the tips.
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
You make all these things with a griddle, even a griddle to make popcorn, but a microwave to melt butter. Got me thinkin.
A stainless steel pizza peel would slide right under the dome so you could flip it over and have all the popcorn in the dome!
That's a fantastic idea Mark. I will have to try that. I needed an excuse to get a pizza peel anyways. Figure I get that first then tell my wife "well we got the peel, might as well buy a pizza oven now!" 😂😂😂
Awesome thank you
No problem man, thanks so much for watching.
Popcorn may have worked better if you had a thin foil pan that fit under the dome. Just a thought, idk how hard it was to get it off the griddle.
@@JohnnyBrunet I appreciate the tips! I got a 36" Blackstone for Christmas and I've been watching your videos to get me started. Love that your vids get straight to the point, and the tip about the infrared thermometer was by far the best advice I've seen so far!
@@ryanh6378 you're welcome I'm glad you enjoy my videos and tips. Also congrats on the new griddle man! They're a lot of fun, definitely a learning curve but if you already got an infrared then that's half the battle. Thanks for watching and commenting.
L🤣O🤣L!!! About when you're going to start your diet.
Ps With all your GREAT recipes,
DON'T KEEP DELAYING YOUR START DATE😂😂😂
Griddles don't get hot enough for tepanyaki style fried rice, so I am trying to retro-fit mine to get the temps to 500+ sustained.
What brand do you have? Mine goes over 500 but I usually just cook my fried rice around 400 and it turns out fine.
Must not have a camp chef my FTG 900 hits that on low
Nice!!
Thanks
What if you preheat the oil on the stove then transfer the cast iron pan to the griddle or carefully pour into the foil pan? 🤔
I've had a few people suggest that and I think that would be an easier way to do it. It would also be more dangerous lol but I still think it would be easier. Thanks for watching.
“Think I’ll start my diet next week” my thoughts as wells
Great minds think alike 😉
it is just a large cast iron skillet for outside
Pretty much. Like one of those cast iron lodge griddles that you can put on the stove. The seasoning and upkeep is exactly like cast iron. The main benefit is it's a lot larger and like you said, it's outside. Which is great for keeping the kitchen clean. I haven't cooked bacon inside my house for two years and my wife is pretty happy about it. Thanks for watching John.
We are all under the dome brother.
😂
Use 151 for the volcano 👍
Ya I've heard that works well too. Thanks for watching.
I'm wondering if you could give advice on propane or natural gas griddle
I've never used natural gas on a residential griddle but I know it's possible with some brands. I don't know if it would cook any better or more evenly but I gotta imagine it's cheaper and very convenient. If I had the ability to do it at my place I would definitely consider it.
