Guardian Bee Apparel compared, a Suit for all seasons, Protective Clothing for Bee Keepers

  • Two VERY nice beekeeping suits. Full suits, one standard with many extra pockets and knee reinforcement, and one vented suit with opening veil! Ventilated Suites keep you protected while you stay cool, they cost more and are heavier but you won't notice the weight in exchange for perspiration free comfort.
    IF you are only going to own one suit, choose vented, you can always wear more clothing underneath if you are in a "sting-storm" or if you want to be warmer.
    I like them both and with summer in full swing, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the ventilation!
    There are things I really like about both suit designs and as with many beekeeping decisions, suits are really about personal preferences and practices.
    MY FAVORITE SUITE is no bee-suit at all, but there are definitely times when you simply have to protect yourself as well as the bees. A sting, is also a dead worker.

    and
    guardianbeeapp...
    Both are excellent companies run by truly wonderful people right here in the good old USA.

      Will this suit work good to get a wasp nest out of my bay window from my house? Was thinking about getting into bees as well but my first experience with any suit is now looking like a fight to kill paper wasps sweat bees who have moved into my house. Let me know your thoughts

    I just sent for a ventilated jacket. I have a regular jacket (unventilated) that I absolutely roast in here in Tennessee on a hot day.I'd like to get a full suit but, at 6'6", just try to find one that fits...lol. Thanks for the vid brother.

    • @waltertchapman32
      @waltertchapman32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      357lockdown a lean to medium build 6'6" would put you in a 3xl suit with Guardian Bee Apparel. Over approximately a 50" waist and you would possible consider a 4xl... Even then the 3X would probably fit you well.

    How do you get the bees off the suit when you are finished? Can the stingers stick into the material?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never had a problem getting bees off the suit. You can use low pressure air, or a foxtail brush etc... I've never found a stinger in the vented suits, but have found them in the goatskin or leather gloves.

  • @Lampropeltis

    Very interesting.
    What drew me to your channel was the torching the Baldfaced hornets.
    I really,really, really hate stumbling onto yellow Jackets nests!
    We are retiring in the future and have been doing Verbo rentals to quieter places in the south to experiment and on several occasions while enjoying the woods I’ve seen the Bald faced hornets. (We don’t have them where we live) I’m embarrassed to say the Yellow Jackets scare me but the Bald face hornets are even MORE frightening. I’ve been wondering if it makes sense to acquire a really good Bee suit to keep on hand for when they have to be taken care of. Can you suggest a kind that is Bald face hornet proof?
    Thank you for your very calm explanations.

      These are for honey bees, but you can wear extra clothing underneath if you are working with longer stingers.

    Manufactures go to a lot of trouble to make white suits yet 90% of the veils have a dark screen instead of white. What's with that?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's intended to cut down on glare.

  • @Lsmith-ly2cm

    Are the Guardian bee veils made of metal screen?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so, I think it's stiff synthetic fiber. Nothing on the website clarifies the material composition. Not aluminum screen.

    What size was the suit for your 5'9 190# body? I'm 5'8 and 184. Looking for good ventilated suit as I have hot flashes from total hysterectomy last year that are harsh.

    What do you wear under the ventilated suit if you’re doing a wasp/hornet removal?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeans and a hoodie... but if I'm going to "war" I wear the Natural Apiary Max-Protect suits. Wasps have successfully pushed their thin abdomens into the mesh of the ventilated suits. I discussed a thicker vented version with Guardian Bee Apparel, but they never developed it.

    • @l.v.i.bushcraftandsurvival6692
      @l.v.i.bushcraftandsurvival6692 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bee suit companies need to step up their game and make thicker suits to deal with hornets/wasps. I talked with Guardian the other day about this. I think so many bee suit companies are in denial the Giant Japanese Hornets are in the US now, though they have not spread- yet.

    Great review Fred, thank you. I'm looking at getting one of the guardian apparel vented suits. Now that you have maybe used these for a season, how did you find their abbey style hood vs the fencing? What is your preference now and why? Many thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tell them that Fred sent you!!! :) My personal preference is the zippered fencing style veil because I can loaf around and sip coffee - the Abby style has zippers, but it doesn't open the way the fencing style does. This is still my favorite ventilated suit by far!!!

    You said you prefer to wear no suit at all. Is there a specific veil that you like?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the lightest and most useful veil I wear is the one that comes from FlowHive... I wear that most of the time and the veil portion just sets on top of the broad brimmed hat. Very comfortable and I cover it in my first bee-suit comparison video. Unless I'm really going to take a hive apart, I generally don't wear bee suits. Thanks for that question Kevin!
