What if The Doctor's accent is due to his companion has that accent? Like maybe The 11th Doctor's relationship with Amy could have explained why The 12th Doctor has a Scottish accent. It could be something to do with the TARDIS' ability to translate languages, which would explain how Shakespeare and so on have MODERN British accents despite the fact that modern British accents only go back as far as the 18th century (or was it the 19th?), with British accents prior to that sounding more like modern American accents.

I already binge watch doctor who and would never Skip a single episode and couldn't imagine ever using the word filler to describe a show as unique as doctor who.
Actually, I would use CGI classic Doctors, but for animating lost episodes and Big Finish episodes. That's different from using CGI for appearances in new episodes, which might be alright for brief glimpses instead of stock footage like they've done many times, but I agree that using CGI for a significant appearance (more than a few seconds) isn't the right way to do it.
The silly thing is Multiverse is how I explain how the doctor can do things like having Tom Baker teach Isaac Newton about gravity in a bar while also having 14 land in his tree way later in the doctors timeline. The tardis can move through space, and time. Space plus time equals dimension so why not multiple
I mean Robert Picardo? (I mean he played a character called the Doctor :P - which i'm sure is known :), more so by this channel :D) - I think he'd be a good Doctor (as in Doctor Who) )
I'm just going to assume that the script writer for this video knows that Ryan Gosling isn't actually American. (He was actually born in London. Granted, that's London, Ontario, Canada.)
FYI, James Earl Jones signed the rights to his Vader recording sessions to Lucasfilm before his death specifically so that they may use them with AI to create any new Vader lines if needed should he pass on. The great man planned...
I think it'd probably be fine to have an american actor so long as the PART is still British. Like having Henry Cavill (a British actor) play the all-american Superman - who fights for "truth, justice and the american way". We've also had TWO British Spidermen. All three still play their parts as american, because that's the character. Especially in Superman's case - like the Doctor, he embodies characteristics of the country that created him, despite being an alien. It worked perfectly fine that way round so I don't see why the same can't be true in reverse, if you can find an american who can do a convincing enough accent.
@@gerryandersonisbestwe also had an English man play Batman cause Christian bale is English and that could explain his lisp when he was Bruce Wayne trying to cover the accent
I am American and ..... no, no, no... never an American doctor. I agree with EVERYTHING you listed within the video. Then fact is, I prefer British television over American.
Remember, the Master's TARDIS once appeared as a Greek/Roman style column in Classic Who in order to blend in, while the Doctor's was still the police box, and it made perfect sense, as the Master was overtly deceptive, as the Doctor was not.
@@DittoGTI I'm aware of that, but it still doesn't change the sense of it in my head. The Master used the circuit to deceive, while the Doctor didn't feel a need to fix it.
I'd be fine with them changing the TARDIS from a police box if: 1.) It was only for 1 episode, probably the episode of a regeneration 2.) When it goes back to being the regular looking Police Box TARDIS they make a comment like "Ah. This is much better! It just felt OFF before, you know?"
I do want to see what an "American" Time Lord would be like. Maybe name them "The Mechanic," basically an inventor. Someone who got bored of the upkeep of a facility on Galifrey and wanted to see what was out there to be invented. Or some BS like that. LOL
Agreed on all counts except that I would have no problem if the Daleks were permanently wiped out (or even just never used again). They, like Star Trek's Borg, are scary and interesting on the surface but ultimately incredibly boring when you actually use them a lot. And the Daleks have been used A LOT. At least give us a few-even several-seasons without them before bringing them back.
I see no problem with an American actor playing The Doctor. Matt Smith even said that he would love to see John Lithgow as The Doctor. The Doctor can literally be anybody, so why not an American, or an Australian, or an Indian for that matter!
I think it's a matter of time before we get a Doctor from America, Australia, Canada, or Ireland. Obviously, at first there'll be loads of outrage and complaint, but once we see it, and realize how wonderful they are we'll laugh at ourselves for ever doubting it.
At least make the first non-British Doctor someone with a stage background. Between that and her history on the West End, I could see Patti Lupone as The Doctor, preferably exclusive to Big Finish audio dramas.
Sorry, had an important phone call, got here as soon as I could. I agree almost categorically with everything on this list, if not completely with all the reasoning. Close enough that we're not going to fight about it. Sorry if that was your intent. #1 for me was an American Doctor. I feel very strongly on the subject. Doctor Who is British. It's part of the cultural identity. And so, it must always remain British. So strongly do I believe this, it got me blocked on Twitter, by one of my mutuals, no less. The Doctor's name is a close second. Good list. As mentioned, with the exception of maybe some of the reasoning, I wouldn't change a thing.
The trouble with the Daleks is that there's no ideal resting period for them. When Resurrection of the Daleks came out, I was 11 and had only seen them in a new context once in five years (The Five Doctors), so it felt like a big deal. But five years to an 11 year old is roughly half a lifetime. At 51 it goes in the blink of an eye! So, rest them for ten years. And wake me for the second reel.
I remember an interview that Verity Lambert gave when she said that seeing the Timelords and landing on Gallifrey decreased the Doctor's mystery and spoke about the benefits of not knowing the Doctor too much. In a way, if we ever have an episode where we meet the doctor's family members, it would feel as if we knew his name. Think about, imagine if we knew everything about the Doctor and the only reduced mystery we have is his name, we might as well what his name is. Yeah, like Colin Baker was humble. I would not mind a little de-aging on some of the surviving actors, provided it isn't too distracting.
That was the whole idea of the Carmel Masterplan, of which "Silver Nemesis" was a part. It was intended to restore the mystery to The Doctor because by that time much of The Doctor was known. In "Silver Nemesis" we got hints that The Doctor was far more than we've been shown, When the villain starts to hint at The Doctor's past, The Seventh Doctor looked to be afraid.
The Doctor Falls would have been a satisfying ending, it doesn't need to be an open ending. We can still have adventures with all the known incarnations and all the characters through spin offs and other media once the main show ends.
It'd be stupidly expensive but if The Rani came back but due to The Master experimenting on her making her experience 2 regenerations at once. Big Finish did something like this and it'd be cool for the show and make The Rani twice as interesting/powerful/unpredictable. Maybe a more coldly charismatic Rosamund Pike type and campier Elizabeth Hurley type plauing her two halves?
It would be funny as a one off episode if they did everything purposely wrong and the dr's entire mission that episode is fixing what is wrong/getting back to his normal self
The biggest reason why revealing the Doctor's name would be a bad idea is because nothing that gets revealed would mean anything. There is absolutely no answer to the mystery of their name that would be remotely satisfying, or have any relative meaning to any viewer at all. The mystery literally doesn't mean anything outside of just existing for the sake of existing

@@SamuelBlack84 You want modern day politics out of Doctor Who? You must hate the Daleks, the Green Death, the Sun Makers, the Happiness Patrol, Aliens of London, World War Three, Gridlock, The Sound of Drums, the Last of the Time Lords, Oxygen
I'd do #10 one better - if you're only going to do only 6 or even 10 episodes, why not drop them monthly to spread out the joy and shorten the droughts? The weekly episodes are a throwback to the serials of Classic Who.
I've heard that The Ninth Doctor destroyed the Chameleon Circuit so that it would never work again. He did it because the TARDIS' Police Box Form had become a key part of Earth History.
Relax, Americans. Our British friends like to punch up every now and then, but don't let it rankle. Obviously, there are many actors from all over the world who could portray The Doctor brilliantly, but it doesn't matter. One of the great contradictions in Whodom is represented by the repeated message that the idea of nation-states is holding Humanity back, portrayed most excellently by a cabal of actors who all hail from one small island. The irony is almost charming.
I strongly agree with you on the first five, but I'm not so sure on the last five. Especially number One: Not yet, but eventually, with their, or their families permission, I think I'd like to see other Doctors return, even All Doctors return, IF the story (and the effects) are exemplary! And of the first five, I most strongly agree with number eight, The Doctor not being a divine being; just a really good Time Lord. As always thank you so very much all for the videos.
I gotta somewhat disagree with number 2. It's understandable . don't get me wrong!, culture wise it would be different and clash but it's more or less you need the proper actor and designate a focus for the doctor incarnation they play as, there really isn't a base line of what defines the doctor other than a humble traveler from the stars. Giving an American actor could be good to bring a different flair to the role, I see RDJ's Sherlock Holmes type of role as a good example but only time will tell. Also, it's disney now so I kinda doubt they are gonna respect that.
No multiverse please, at least not with Doctor. Maybe if they brought Dark Raven Productions on TH-cam with the multiverse and Second Empire stories with the daleks being actual soldiers/officers with feelings fighting
"An American Doctor would potentially be bigger, brasher, louder, elements that clash with the Doctor's default setting of humble traveler helping out wherever they can." That's a pretty big generalization you are making about over 300 million people.
The point being made is that American media production and British media production are fundamentally different. Having an American actor play The Doctor would bring in elements of American media production that would clash with the pre-existing style of the show. Just look at the TV movie.
Never ever can the Tardis not be a police box! Totally unthinkable! No AI doctors! No, there can never be an ending. I do hope the series is not being Americanized. I much prefer the British style. I wouldn't mind the Doctor and the Master to be siblings - much. But I did like the chemistry between the Doctor and Missy. Actually, Missy was by far my most favourite Master. I'd be grateful for never seeing a Dalek again. There were some episodes where I didn't hate them. But those few are enough, I don't need any more. And I could do very well without the Cybermen either. I'd like the Doctor to be a god-like creature, though. Isn't he? Why else would revealing his name destroy the universe?
I thought the ending provided by World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time were good and a great way to end show, but then Chibnall and RTD then had to wreck it. Thankfully, we have so many more years of content to satisfy us (the audios, books and comics). And if you have a problem with Series 7B's opening titles, you have a problem with a lot of the show's history as every doctor from the Classic Series (apart from William Hartnell) had at least one point their faces in the opening titles.
When DW stories were multi-part serials (as in ClassicWho), releasing in a chunk makes more sense, so you can watch the story as a "movie" in one go, as opposed to NuWho, which are more singular stories (maybe a 2-parter thrown in)...
As an American, I respectfully disagree with #2. My belief is that just as there are many accents and dialects of this planet, there has to be as many (if not more) on Gallifrey. With that being said, I wouldn't mind if the Doctor had any accent they hadn't used before (French, German, Italian, Ukranian, et al). They're still the Doctor and will do what's right.
As an American and second generation Whovian, I always connected with the idea that The Doctor could be anyone. Any race, gender, sexuality it doesn’t matter as long as The Doctor holds true to their core character traits. While I agree an American Doctor would definitely be weird at first, if they found the right person for the role who’s to say they couldn’t pull it off?
I've thought that although the core of The Doctor remains the same, the various personality aspects vary in how prominent they are. The Fourth Doctor combined aspects of his three previous personas, and The Sixth Doctor was the opposite of The Fifth Doctor.
I wouldn't mind an American Doctor, obviously I'd like it to slowly shift, first the UK, then the UK and the Commonwealth, then UK, Commonwealth, and Europe, and *then* other international actors.
A just phoned up Robin Whitehouse. "Eddow?", said a voice, sounding like he got a block'd up nose. It was Whitehouse. A then proceeded to take the mock out of Whitehouse, for a full harlf hour. A said lots, but it was mostly mocking his peg. Then, A threatened to tar and feather him. Whitehouse got mad. Suddenly, A heard a thud. "Oh no, oy'm having problem's breathing! ", A heard whitehouse screaming down the line, sounding like his nose totally block'd up. Then, suddenly, the line went dead. A hung up, laughing.
I am not a fan of the idea of an American actor in the part, but I think we'd do far worse than Jeff Goldblum. I mean, like Tom, he's a bit of an eccentric to start with.
I disagree that Doctor Who can't do a definitive end. In a way, I wish that they had done in 2017, do away with the David Tennant regenerated into himself thing from 2013, and have the Twelfth Doctor die at the end of The Doctor Falls. The show can always be timeless without going on forever; we can always have novels, audios, and comics without the main universe lasting on TV forever. Hell, if you still wanted it on TV, you could have gone in cycles of the doctor reaching thirteen lives, dying, and a new universe beginning. Closure is a good thing every now and again.
"The Doctor is not Superman" - Of course, not. The Doctor is just the (mostly) only survivor of a destroyed alien civilization with powers and technology far beyond that of humanity. While Doctor could have chosen to rule humanity, instead the Doctor is here to help us and guide us, and to defend against threats humanity is helpless against (as contrasted with the ambitions of one of the few other survivors of his people). The Doctor instead chooses to live among humans and help out of the goodness of his heart-because it is kind, because it is the right thing to do. Yeah-Nothing at all like Superman. "The Doctor's Name" - The Doctor's name is the Doctor. That's the whole point. "An American Actor as the Doctor" - That's just crazy talk. It would be like hiring a UK actor to play an American icon such as Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man. No one would stand for it. Can you imagine the outrage if an Englishman was cast the successor to Captain Kirk on Star Trek. That sort of thing would never happen. Our American pop culture icons are just too sacred!
@@judithstrachan9399 Well, I don’t believe we ever HAVE had a British actor play Batman or Superman. Tom Holland, on the other hand… but we do have some Brits and actors from Oz who can pass surprisingly well, so I could be wrong. As far as Americans doing British accents it used be standard in old Hollywood. Likewise you always had one or two bits doing southern accents. Most notably in gone with the wind
The Doctor and the Master must be the same person! The reason there is so much affection and emnity between the two is they are in fact regenerations of each other. Yep, my fan fiction reigns supreme
I wrote my Doctor who book. Where the Master is the related to the Doctor but he’s become a slave to Rassilon who put the drums in his head to control him. It’s why he hears the heart beat of four, heart beat of a timelord. Rassilon controlling him. If you think about it Rassilon is quite a dominating headstrong villain and the Master seems to match that entirely all the way up to hurting the Doctor at any cost.
Or you can have The Master being the path that No. 14 ends up as after bi-generation. Then "The Doctor" is still pure but you can see what he could become should he fall
@@bawintermage8351 As well as a potential reason on why The Master is slightly insane and hearing drums. The "Drums" could be a byproduct of 14 being shot by The Toymaker. 14 still should have died there even with Bi-regeneration but didn't. Then they could have it so at some point The Master suppressed his older memories to try and deal with it which would both explain why the original version of The Master wasn't quite so insane (make it so this is shortly after he suppresses them) and why they seemed to get worse the more and more time they spent fighting The Doctor (The memories weren't removed and they would still technically be crossing time with their old selves)

The bigenerations make sense when you consider the multi Doctor episodes with the older Doctors being older.
Not all, Dr's 11 grew old in Trenzalore!
To me from a in-universe standpoint it is rather weird that the doctor only regenerates into british people. Or people from earth.
It's only a matter of time until we get a blue skinned Doctor with 5 eyes and 8 arms
Well in universe he doesn't look human, we look Time Lord. If I'm remembering an audio drama right, the Time Lords literally tailored evolution and the timelines of certain races to make them resemble the Time Lords.
@@ZootLives the American accent (which one? Texan? New Jersey? Boston?) being the old English accent is a fallacy. The only similarity being they kept the rohtic r still used in the south west of England. In fact, Cornwall and Devon are the closest we have to that old English dialect

Thank you, Ellie, for bringing us the best Dr Who commentary on TH-cam. You are such a bright spot in the Whoniverse❣️
Luke Perry as Inspector Spacetime made me LOL for real. Good show.
I already binge watch doctor who and would never Skip a single episode and couldn't imagine ever using the word filler to describe a show as unique as doctor who.
As an American I will make you eat your words when I play The Doctor
Let's do it together
I get to be The Master then 🤣🤣
Yea no thanks to CGI classic Doctors, that would feel even more disrespectful because they're still doing Doctor Who with Big Finish.
Because we need "Inspector Spacetime" 😆
I mean Robert Picardo? (I mean he played a character called the Doctor :P - which i'm sure is known :), more so by this channel :D) - I think he'd be a good Doctor (as in Doctor Who) )
I'm just going to assume that the script writer for this video knows that Ryan Gosling isn't actually American. (He was actually born in London. Granted, that's London, Ontario, Canada.)
You can assume they don't know much at all since they started using AI to write scripts
This make him from the British Commonwealth so he could play The Doctor
FYI, James Earl Jones signed the rights to his Vader recording sessions to Lucasfilm before his death specifically so that they may use them with AI to create any new Vader lines if needed should he pass on. The great man planned...
Thats horrible actually
More like a great man was coerced to make a bad decision.
Thanks Ellie. It's always pleasant listening to you.
Id love an American doctor
I think it'd probably be fine to have an american actor so long as the PART is still British. Like having Henry Cavill (a British actor) play the all-american Superman - who fights for "truth, justice and the american way". We've also had TWO British Spidermen. All three still play their parts as american, because that's the character. Especially in Superman's case - like the Doctor, he embodies characteristics of the country that created him, despite being an alien. It worked perfectly fine that way round so I don't see why the same can't be true in reverse, if you can find an american who can do a convincing enough accent.
@@gerryandersonisbestWe've also had an Australian and an Irishman play James Bond.

The reason the Masters TARDIS looked that way is because the chameleon circuit isn't broken on the Masters TARDIS
@@DittoGTI I'm aware of that, but it still doesn't change the sense of it in my head. The Master used the circuit to deceive, while the Doctor didn't feel a need to fix it.
I'd be fine with them changing the TARDIS from a police box if:
1.) It was only for 1 episode, probably the episode of a regeneration
2.) When it goes back to being the regular looking Police Box TARDIS they make a comment like "Ah. This is much better! It just felt OFF before, you know?"
The Daleks need to get a spin off.
I do want to see what an "American" Time Lord would be like. Maybe name them "The Mechanic," basically an inventor. Someone who got bored of the upkeep of a facility on Galifrey and wanted to see what was out there to be invented. Or some BS like that. LOL
Peter Sellers, American?
I humbly request that Rule #1 be waived in the case of recreating the Lost Episodes.
Want a Welsh doctor first.
I'm not sure why I got this idea, but I have become absolutely persuaded that we need a Jamaican Doctor.
@@brewster_4 Cillian Murphy
"if we ever have an episode where we meet the doctor's family members"
[coughSusancough]
That was the whole idea of the Carmel Masterplan, of which "Silver Nemesis" was a part. It was intended to restore the mystery to The Doctor because by that time much of The Doctor was known. In "Silver Nemesis" we got hints that The Doctor was far more than we've been shown, When the villain starts to hint at The Doctor's past, The Seventh Doctor looked to be afraid.
Series 7 second title screen was awesome
@9:06 well that's not fair
Don't forget, never change the colour of the TARDIS and never change the tv theme.
The shape of the TARDIS shouldn't be changed either.
Unless the name is something absolutely crazy like Jesus Christ
Just like the Joker's origin.
No American has played James Bond
Okay, I really don't get the hate for the Series 7B intro sequence. Is it the best one? No, but it's not THAT bad either.

I think fixing the chameleon circuit for an episode could work, but it has to go back to normal by the end.

"An American Doctor would potentially be bigger, brasher, louder, elements that clash with the Doctor's default setting of humble traveler helping out wherever they can." That's a pretty big generalization you are making about over 300 million people.
accurate tho
The point being made is that American media production and British media production are fundamentally different. Having an American actor play The Doctor would bring in elements of American media production that would clash with the pre-existing style of the show. Just look at the TV movie.

No-one wrecked anything.

While I agree an American Doctor would definitely be weird at first, if they found the right person for the role who’s to say they couldn’t pull it off?
I agree!
I've thought that although the core of The Doctor remains the same, the various personality aspects vary in how prominent they are. The Fourth Doctor combined aspects of his three previous personas, and The Sixth Doctor was the opposite of The Fifth Doctor.
As an American I wholeheartedly agree no American doctors. Just no.

That Scrubs reference was on point
