The reason most rebuild units dont last as long its because the builder doesn't take pride in his work most big transmission shop is all about how fast they can get it out and make the most money. The only way you will find a good builder is word of mouth and he is usually a one man team that love what he does.

Always find the "gems" within the JUNK!
I always check local u pull it yards and salvage yards before I buy new parts!
I run only engines and transmissions from salvage yards and I drive over mountains every day!

Basically making a case for his line of work. I bought an import used trans from Japan to replace my poor shifting original. The shifted flawlessly until I got rid of the car 5 years and 60 k miles later. $300 for the trans, another $300 for the install. The transmission shop wanted $1200 for a rebuild. Give me a break dude.

Thanks Tom, your video has helped me make a decision that has been bugging me for a couple of years. I rescued a '93 Chevy extra cab 1500 from the back forty here on the ranch and my son got a couple of years out of her but now she doesn't want to go backwards any more. At 250K with one rebuild on the engine, I'm afraid its time to send old Brown Betty to the glue factory. Gonna miss the old girl - great ride while she lasted.

Rebuilt Transmission will be superior than original, as any flaws and weaknesses have been identified and addressed. I just had my transmission rebuilt. Not cheap, but I was not willing to go with a used one. keep in mind and updated transmission will also cost more. Upgraded clutch kit, parts, etc. Additional: Trans Coolers. An adittional $100- 180. for a parts and labor is cheap to protect and extend life of an expensive Transmission.

Buying any used part is a gamble, unless you know the history of the vehicle it was taken from. Some used tranies might last for years and others may be bad when you put them in. A properly rebuilt one is generally a much better option, but, of course, it will cost more, and if not properly rebuilt, with high quality parts, may not outlast a good used one.

I have 2005 chevy Silverado 1500 i also have problems with the transmission first before i bought it. It drove 1st gear all suddenly jumps 2nd to 3rd but wont shift to 4th ever since a mechanic supposedly fix it 2 days later now it will only go 1st gear and reverse... I dont want to spend alot of money.. I need an advice should i swap the transmission or rebuild the transmission?

    • @donneysaab

ID match is all same is fine for Trans. Example. 4TTD = 4TTD. First number is the year. 2004 = 4). However the torque converter could be different still ...unless you match that code also. Thanks. Tom

I knew he was going to talk about GM and all the lbp lpb and other various ratios that Chevy used in the early 2000's
I've had a few of them and I wasn't impressed with the failure rates!
That being said Chevy is one of my favorite makes!!!
I just don't like buying parts for any v6 of any make being that they tend to fail earlier than most others!
    Dodge doesn't impress me either.
    But as stated.
V6 setups have been garbage for gm
    Mainly Pontiac and Chevy!
Buick has impressed me with transmissions
    Just not engines.
The 3800 series v6 was great but the 3400 series tend to strip components in the aluminum cylinder heads!
Yet they rarely have transmission problems.
The 3800 series always kill transmissions if you can get the electrical stsyem to last long enough to do that in a Chevy!
Ford on the other hand has their own issues
    As well as Dodge!
    NEVER BUY A CVT!
    THEY JUST DONT LAST!
I have however been very impressed with the longevity of many imports in recent years.
Although with imports you deal with more rust and paint issues as well as brake lines!
Kia has come a long way and they're made in the use now so quality assurance has gone up.
BMW on the other hand is literally just a car to me!
Now that you've read this far you might as well keep going!!!
As he stated in this video manual/standard (stick shift) transmissions last longer when you don't abuse them and the only thing that usually goes wrong with them is the clutch!
Subscribe to my channel and I will be posting a few car repair videos in the near future!
I try to keep it short and sweet and I stick to the point!
Once in a wile I get off topic but a few people have prospered from my knowledge of automobiles.
I have been driving up to 200 miles a day for the past 3 years and I work 7 days a week!
Can't wait to see how many people give me shit for making such a long comment.
In this section but I couldn't help but wonder why one wouldn't just check for water and debris before pulling a transmission from a salvage yard but I guess some folks don't dig very deep and that's what people like this man and myself do for fun!

Every single person I know who has had a transmission rebuilt at a large reputable shop has been back minimum of once. Typically a couple times within the 1year warranty period. Then it breaks after that. Had one in an Avalanche repaired 4 times!!!! in less that a year under warranty. So was without vehicle atleast a half month waiting on them to do stuff, plus all the hassle of hauling vehicle back to them and from the location it broke at. NO WAY. I only get used transmissions. Buy one off ebay. The seller will lose WAYyyy too much money dealing with selling a bad transmission and returns and refunds, etc. They are checked out and working just fine. No issues. I also pick some up from junkyards. I always change the seals and filter and fluid on any trans too.

    • @donneysaab
      @donneysaab  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Obviously I don’t know your friends or the shops you’re using but I can guarantee you after 40 years in the business a rebuilt transmission is 10 times better than a used transmission. If you want a little proof why would you bother to replace the seals on your used transmission in the fluid? You said you do it on all these used transmissions you put in which is what one or two so your experiment pool is so small it’s not even relevant. Then you have all the fluid in the torque converter that’s captured and cannot be removed so why would you change the fluid and seals on a perfectly good used transmission and less you felt they needed to be replaced. So what about all the seals inside the transmission and the rest of the oil? The seals in the transmissions are the ones that wear out due to pressure. The ones on the outside have no pressure on them there a static seal and the least likely the leak. You notice a next external drip or leak but it’s the internal leaks that caused the transmission to slip and caused you problems. Regardless enjoy your used transmissions. I’m sure the worn out seals and dirty fluid appreciate your business.
