The real benefit of the subwoofer isn't the bass enhancement - it's that you're no longer asking small to medium sized drivers to reproduce low frequencies. These are the hardest frequencies for smaller drivers to handle and generate the most heat and distortion (bad things for speaker performance). The monitors will then "improve" because you're not sending them frequencies they don't handle well.
AGREED! It's also usually best to use subs and satellites from the same manufacturer. What I don't understand here is why KRK felt the need to port a sub (?). It would be better to have more time domain and transient accuracy than so-called, "more bass." Another benefit of using a sub with smaller drivers is that it helps clarify the "smear" between lower mid and upper bass frequencies, facilitating better eq decisions in that frequency range.
@@beengrim3697 Its probably not crossing over... that's why its good to use subs from the same manufacturer. You can plug your mains into the sub and it acts as a system, correctly crossing over, and on good subs, dealing with phase issues, allowing for delay compensation and other things that help a sub blend into a soundstage, rather than just feeling like the low end is separated and coming from the floor.
@@beengrim3697 oh god no. It’s midnight and I cant wait to test your theory. I will put the crossover to the highest 90hz and then the sub sound to its minimun like off but not from switch. Then I will send the sine sub to the monitors and lets see if the crossover will cut the lows from the monitors. I really hope it do. If not I need to re try that 60hz setting tho it just sound lifeless but correct.
ABSOLUTELY YES, a subwoofer is 100% necessary to really monitor those lower frequencies and hear how and where they are going to "Thump". Set up the sub just to feel how the air is moving out of the subwoofer. Make sure not to generate bass that is not actually in the mix, use very low and unpowerful settings in the sub for mix accuracy.
After setting my KRK sub level using the usual methods, pink noise, decibel meter, by ear, etc., I tweak it further using IK’s ARC3 analysis curves… For example, if after the ARC3 analysis it appears that ARC3 is generally trying to cut or boost sub frequencies to make my room flat, I adjust the KRK sub level very slightly up or down a notch and run the ARC3 analysis process again, until the ARC3 analysis curve shows ARC3 is doing little or no correction down there. My assumption is that if ARC3 isn’t trying to change the sub level, then the Level pot on the KRK sub must be set correctly.
Fantastic idea! I have the Arc 3 software and I'm thinking of adding a bass bin to my Kaki In-5's. 😎

Adding a sub to my chain changed my mixing drastically. I do make bass heavy house music, though. I've even used 10'' inch monitors, but having a dedicated sub which is also properly high passing the satellites, makes the satellites sound a lot better as well as they're not trying so hard to pump out low end. Game changer for me! :)
I made my own with a Electro Voice 10" driver in a tuned 38 Hzt tuned ported box, I have a 1000 watt Leon subwoofer amp to handle the beast. Best subwoofer I ever have, new technology on all components. I love subwoofers since I was a teenager, I have owned any brand and size you can't imagine, really happy now. Love your channel. I do love sub harmonics, they are always around us, traffic, trains, airplanes or even at classical concerts.
I use my Genelec 1032 and the subwoofer 7070A, a little bit bigger than the KRK S10.4, for more than 15 years. They go down to 19 Hz. It was the best investment I did. You hear frequencies you never heard before. And it makes so much fun.
What a perfect video showcasing this sub!! I loved how you used both the full range 8 inch monitors as well as the smaller versions of them, and how the sub still worked as needed albeit lowering volumes and at the short distance used - this is a perfect showcase for me as I have the KRK 8s and wondered if this 10.4 would suffice - I can now see I'll be good to go for a home DJ type scenario, so many thanks for this!
I use the 8 inch KRK sub with one of their 5 inch 2 way monitors for a 3-way system and a pair of their vxt-4 speakers for 2-way. The sub works well if you dial it it in right. I found some instructions on how to do that online and once I got it balanced it really helped with transparency
I paired this sub with the Kali IN-5's and I'm absolutely floored. SUCH a strong compliment to each other! Your reviews we're the tipping point for me in making my final decision on both the Kali's and the KRK 10.4, thank you. I've been testing moving my crossover between 70 and 80hz and that seems to take a good load off the IN-5's. Seems to increase their performance while not taking away from the good punchiness the 5" woofers on the Kali's have. For context, my room is a standard home office size with a decent amount of room treatment (Rockwool panels). Hope this helps someone else with their purchase decisions!
I use the same monitors and am looking to upgrade for my hard house mixes. I appreciate you mentioning how this worked for you. I may just finally hit the 'buy' button. Thanks!
@@djclubberlangley Awesome! I took a little extra time on this reply so I'm glad it was valuable to someone! Produce Like A Pro is making such awesome stuff. Really hitting the sweet spot for what I think is a HUGE number of producers, mixers, and post-production pros/semi-pros.
@@andy4373 I'm very grateful for you taking the time to review Andy. Glad you mentioned the Kali's as I really love them, but there is some bass missing for sure, although they sound amazing. You made my mind up, so thank you! 😁
Super interesting video! I bought my KRK Sub before buying the adam audio t5v's, and was very pleased with the final outcome. I found exactly the same thing you did. Mine is set at 60hz, and volume just under half. The reason I bought the KRK Sub was in that level of the market, the KRK seemed to have more features, particularly the footswitch which is critical. You absolutely need a way to turn it on and off ad-hoc whenever you need to. I only have mine on for two reasons and you mentioned them both, mostly because it's fun, and I totally agree it makes my ~AU$700 Adams sound more expensive! the other reason is simply to check the sub end of the mix. Thanks Warren, love how you reassure us plebs that the gear we can afford is totally legit!
For my "home" 5.1 room, I use Genelec 1031A LCR and a 1092 sub. The room is smooth down to 30 Hz...and lots of fun to mix or screen my scores in. Thanks for this.
I am just starting out and I picked up a pair of KRK 5" monitors and they work pretty well. This sub is something that I will definitely be looking into when finances permit.
Yes I use a sub. I’m mixing on a pair of Genelec 8030 and use a Rel R305 sub. It is not ideal but I use the Rel because I already had it (previously use it with my hifi set). That being said, it does help me a lot. It shows me what the low-end rumble does on a acoustic guitar or piano. Boy, that can really move some air.
I used to be confused about why you would use subs to mix. It seemed to me that it would be the equivalent of using consumer headphones with a “hyped low end“, and therefore I would end up making poor mix decisions, based off of the extra low end information. But seeing as how you can actually dial in the frequency and gain structure, it totally makes sense! As it has been said, “the subs pick up where the near fields leave off.” I could see how this would be extremely helpful when high-passing very low frequency information. when just using near fields, you’re not going to hear what it is your high passing. KRK subs seem to be a great solution and a great extension for anyone’s mixing rig.
I've always been asked to be cautious with a subwoofer, especially if the room is not properly treated acoustically. Its easier to treat a room for mids and highs (w rockwool panels and diffusers), however low end acoustic treatment ( bass traps ) is not as simple......so Warren i request you to shed some light on : 1) what if the subwoofer, "booms" excessively or just that due to lack of proper low end acoustic treatment does not actually provide more accurate monitoring? most bedroom producers or musicians starting out who have bought budget speakers, probably dont have a properly treated room, and so even if the subwoofer is high quality and affordable, does it really help the overall sound (for better mixing)? 2) pls show us the acoustic treatment in your studio, especially the bass trapping ..... Thankyou!
Warren, I have used several subs in the past and have settled on the KRK8's. They work great with my ATC 25's and the URAI 811C large speakers. I set it under the console just like you did and seems to really enhance the listening experience. I DO have to be careful when mixing....
Paired an Adam sub 12 with a set of S3X-V, made a lot of difference but I think having a bigger set of main monitors is better. If you do get a sub, match it well and spend a enough to get a good crossover. Makes one hell of a difference compared to the built in crossovers.
@@RC75 The S3X-V's I've got replaced a set of A77X. You'll get a lot out of the A77X, the Sub12 will pair well with them but make sure you set your crossovers properly. Taking the low end strain off the A77X really brings them to life when you hit the sweet spot. I wasn't that impressed with the crossover built into the sub, but it's better than nothing. Decent active crossovers are not cheap, so the sub crossover will do the job if you don't fancy shelling out for something like a BSS Omnidrive or Dolby Lake.
@@sleepingatsea3420 It goes to 35 Hz according to specs, and after testing I'd have to agree. Pretty much did what Warren did in the video. Messed with placement/crossover etc for an hour or two. My EVE SC205s go down to bout 52Hz so setting the KRK @60Hz really did the trick!
I use KRK 7 G4 Rokit and KRK 10s sub (both on isoacoustic ISO stands - big difference with these) in a fully GIK treated room and my sub is set to the -6db position and crossover at 80hz, it's barely turning over but it makes a helluva difference to the enjoyment of music/movies.
I'm using the krk rokit 10s with kali lp6s they sound great I've had the sub for 7 years now really paired the best with the lp6s so far also volume is just as sensitive as in Warren's video
I have a Dynaudio BM9s sub that suits under my mixing desk. It sounds wonderful but setting it up right is a minefield and I find it's more fun than actually useful for critical listening.
This sub topic that is always much vilified by some is very much appreciated by me. I like to hear my music in this way so I am strongly considering one. Thanks for this!
I used to just use Kali LP6's. Was having trouble geting my low end right (car test reveals). Added an inexpemsive 8" powered mackie sub. The sub went down to 40hz. Now I have way more accuracy when making "bass" decisions in my mixes. I'll never mix with out a sub again.
After getting Kali LP-8 monitors - which were very reasonably priced, I added their WS-1 - which was almost twice as much as the PAIR of monitors. It's BIG... but the low end is amazing now. Very tight.
im thinking of upgrading to kali lp8s. not sure if i needed a sub with them? i do mostly rock but some drum n bass. been using cheap monitors with 4 or 5 inch speakers. 🤔🍻
I just sold my subwoofer. I like the idea of a sub taking the low end, but all my mixes sounded empty in the mids. Once I unhooked my sub, I focused more attention on the mids, got a better product in the end. For sub frequencies I just use some decent headphones
I have the JBL LSR-308s and the LSR-310S Sub. You can't mix (well) what you can't hear. It's tricky to get smooth low frequencies in a small room, but it's worth the effort to play with placement and basic treatments to get relatively even low frequency response.
Not yet. I just got the IN-5's when they came out so I'm still getting used to them. However, being a 5-string bass player, I would like that extra low-end available for both the fun factor and to make sure I don't over do it...unintentionally. Intentionally is fine. ;)
I've been using a 10" KRK sub for several years now and really like it. I find that the amp has a lot of gain. That may be because they anticipated it being driven by an audio interface, which often don't send a super hot signal. I run it off a mixer out, have the trim control at just over zero, and get plenty of bottom end.
Hey pal, great video, thanks! Can this subwoofer get loud to a point that it starts pounding your chest, or really make you feel the thumps, shaking everything?
i love your channel...but trying to analyze a 10 inch woofer with a 1/4" mic maybe doesn't translate ...i still want to add a sub-woofer to my studio though
I'm only just seeing this from sometime in the future, but I found this extremely helpful! I use JBL308 monitors in my studio, which I love, and which have a decent amount of low end. However, I've long wanted to add a sub to my setup simply to add that very bottom whenever it's called upon. I've heard many YT pundits claim you should never, ever use a sub in the studio unless you're mixing in surround. Whilst I understand their rationale, I do think it's possible to tastefully add a touch of sub without overly colouring your mix. After all, by its very nature, mixing is all about taste anyway, innit? Besides, there are those times when I'll have people over to the studio, pop in a movie, grab a drink, and enjoy a full-range soundtrack using this same setup. In any case, this will help me select a sub, cheers!
Got that sub with the Rokit 5 G4 monitor speakers. Less for production, more for DJing - finally the setup is complete and it sounds really well. And you can choose how much fun you want to have due to the fine controls and if you are mixing at night or outdoors (benefits or a large spot in a warm country) without making too much noise. Even at a very low volume, the sub performs very well and delivers what is needed. And it has plenty of power for a homeparty if you need to. Covered speaker would be nice tho.
You can go to the max, 90Hz. The Rokit 5" G4 are pretty weak on their own, so the subwoofer helps a lot. I do consider getting the bigger 7" rokits in the future just to fill out the room a bit more. The size of the sub should be considered with the room and neighbors in mind, the S10.4 is a monster indoors for the size and price.
@@chrisbowmusic Just consider the fact that I use that setup as a DJ monitor setup and the subwoofer is for more fun, I do not have the exact settings for mixing and mastering.
@@chrisbowmusic In that case you will be fine. I would go with the S10.4 - that one is not much more expensive and still does fit into most places and it provides proper low end, I did test it, it still plays all the way down to 24Hz so you will hear the low end that you need. And it has more than enough volume, shaking the windows and doors here at around 50%, you will rarely use the full power. And the power down on idle does work well with the Rokit speakers - the sub powers down in idle and wakes up with a signal - usually takes 2-3 seconds to wake up and then 2-3 seconds later the speakers wake up too. That feature alone - love it :)
I was delighted with my KRK monitors but I switched to 3-way PSB towers to do mastering. I still use my Kenwood subwoofer to extend (not boost) the deep lows. Sonarworks really helped to even out the low-end and bring out the depth. Gives me eargasms!
The sub adds so much, but so little at the same time. Like in the video it makes it more fun to listen to. And makes the speakers seem more substantial than they are.
This question is for anyone. I have a Blue Sky MediaDesk Sub but without the 4" passive satellites (One of them blew). I'd like to integrate the sub into my setup, but it has a fixed crossover at 110 hz, and no line level ouputs. My active monitors are 5" Yorkville speakers, and they are ported. If I want to integrate the two, can I send signal to both and simply Hi-pass the speakers at 110 hz, adjusting the levels to taste? Or is there more to it than that?
Now I use APS Klasik2020 + APS Sub10, excellent sound! =)Adjusted the volume of the sub to the satellites, choose the best position in the room (use REW), and everything fell into place.
I just bought my sub a few days ago and cant wait for it to arrive. Ive been making music for 7 years without a sub now, and i think it was a mistake because im making EDM and i always have trouble with the low end. Lets hope the sub solves some issues and makes listening and producing even more enjoyable
I do use a subwoofer with my monitors and it is from the same manufacturer Yamaha ( HS80M for the main and the HS8S sub ) . Both are 8 inch cone and it works great , however I also use other speakers to check my mixes ( Trance and electronic music in general ) and since I've put a sub in my rig I can make better judgement for the down under frequencies . Electronic music do need subwoofer for mixing as this type of music is aimed most of the time at the club being played by DJ's on massive PA systems .
I have the Kali IN-8’s V2’s, and my sugar mama… um, I mean wife, is going to get me the Kali WS-12’ sub. I’m looking forward to it. She’s also going to get me the Avantone CLA-10A’s (since you brought up the NS-10’s).. She definitely spoils me more than I deserve. Anyway, after about a 15 year break I am getting back into all this music stuff (kids). The quality of studio monitors has gone up since I was into this stuff for sur (especially the affordable stuff). Kali’s are such a good product - especially for the price point. They’re amazing.
@Produce Like A Pro Thanks for the review! How did you connect the monitors? Through the Sub or directly to the mix console's output? From what I hear you saying @5:27 it seems the speakers do not go through the Sub's crossover filter... . I own a pair of Yamaha HS8 and I need a sub. I've heard some negative reviews about the Yamaha Sub (HS8 S - does not go low enough). Thinking of KRK S12G4 maybe...
My main setup for last decade been yamaha hs5 with yam sub. But I have setup my monitors a bit different. I have crossed it over using a combination of control room setting, eq plugins, sonarworks, multiple outputs all trigged in one second shortcut macro. This allows me with one button push on a controller to go full range hs5 no sub with correct sonarworks to a perfectly crossed over sub added with its own sonarworks settings. Again this is one of the reason I use cubase pro, the control room settings are in a league of their own.
@@wedontneednostinkinbadges3907 There is this whole control room section in cubase that is similar to large console format monitor section. You can have up to for sets of monitors configured with separate outs, and each monitor can have up to 8 of its own inserts. So I can have the main without sub running with sonarworks inserted with the preset that was made with just the main monitor. Then on the sub monitor setup I have to set identical master outs running to both sub and mains...except I includes eq insert with high shelf and low lof shelfs tell each set of speaker where to cut off their freq to no overlap. and after that I have another instance of sonarworks with a preset that was measured after this was done. As for the one button push. made a Macro routine that bypass and push all the buttons needed to make the switch in about 1 second. Its complicated, but works well. To see what all cubase can do youtube some videos about control room in cubase pro 11, it can do a whole lot more like setting up complex cue mixes and when you go to export to audio, you dont have to turn anything off (ie: sonarworks, monitor eq, etc) because non of this actually on the master, its all separate monitor section.
Basically, you want any frequency below 100hz to be handled by single subwoofer that's situated equal distance from your ears as the main monitors are. If you have two spaced low frequency sources, you create very uneven bass response EVEN AT THE LISTENING POSITION because the speed of sound is constant but the wavelengths of different frequencies change so different frequencies either cancel out or stack at the listening position. If you use single subwoofer, you eliminate this issue almost completely (highly dependent on your acoustic treatment, low frequencies ar a pain to control with acoustics)
I know how fun it is to listen to music with good bass, but, assuming we're continuing to go for flat response in the room, isn't using a sub without dialing it in spectrum-wise going to give a faulty room EQ curve? Also (different scenario), if one is using the Soundworks product, how to you get an accurate speaker curve if you have a sub, which isn't being measured in Soundworks setup scheme?
@05:51 So, that is a thing I was assuming, but I was quite wrong. I always thought that the crossover frequency also engages a lowcut filter to the signal that goes out from the output connectors on the sub, so that the sub and normal speakers don't have overlapping frequencies. But this tells me that these output ports just do a passthrough. Or do run the sub separate without using the output connections on the back?
On my older KRK S10 there's definitely a crossover in the unit. Full range goes to the sub and then the satellites are run from there with a signal which is, presumably, high-passed/low-cut. It came with good set-up software and a bevy of test signals. Don't know if the current version does, but should still be available on their site. What you find out from the set-up is that subs are tricky, jumpy, and, at least in my case, most useful when almost off. All rooms, sub and satellite combos, and placements will differ. Still, a good and useful product in my experience. I run a separate system of real world, un-powered book shelf monitors (Tannoy PBM 6.5s).
Thanks for the video. When did mixing begin to include subs in the overall thinking? What are examples of the first albums to mix to subs in addition to the left and right monitors?
You _do_ need a subwoofer. The sub is the only way that I’ve found that clears up the fog surrounding the lower notes played on an electric bass guitar. That’s what was so cool about Marantz bringing the “Midrange” knob to home hi-fi - and we all discovered that Sting was actually playing _notes_ on his bass and not just low thump thump thumping. Now with subwoofers, you can get really OCD about whether the toms are really in tune with the overtones. *On second thought…* Nevermind. Just stick with your monitors.🤔
Great Video As Always. I Got My Yamaha SW 10 Studio Subwoofer A Month Ago. This Video Is Gonna Help Me A Lot To Set It Up Properly. I'm Currently Paired It With Yamaha HS 80 M.
Favorite sub … the Kraken quad 21 but that’s for big stuff for monitoring I use a servo controlled 10 from Martin Logan called the Grotto. The more time you spend in placement and configuration the better your system will respond 🤘🏽. Some things take time, so make the time and dial in the Boom for your room 🔊
Hey Warren, thank you for this! This video makes me really want the 10".. but I'm mixing with KRK 5s, do you feel like I would benefit from having the 10"? Or would the 8" work just as good with the smaller speakers I have? Thank you!
to be honest the 8 works perfectly enough, but both subs are excellent it just depends on your room size and budget. I feel like the 10 can be overkill if you havent set it up properly!!
I use the JBL LSR310S in two of my rooms, one room with the 5" JBL LSR 305, and the other has the 6" JBL LSR306 for mains. We have a third room with the JBL LSR 308 and they don't need the sub. I run my setups through a Qsys Core 110F so and set the crossover based on where the speaker's frequency response hits the drop of 6dB /octave point. The 5" and the 6" are happy crossing to the sub at 85 and 82 Hz respectively, and seem to do great with a L&R 12dB/octave slope. There is a bit of delay required and polar rotation alignment to get the crossover just right, and I couldn't get that without an outboard processor. I've noticed that if the subs are physically set more than 5 degrees off center, it does pull some of the low end balance from the mains in that direction so I try to keep them as on center axis to listening as possible for both rooms.
I like the way you set the sub up by ear, I tend to do the same thing. Measure later to be sure! Currently implementing an Adam Sub7 in my home studio to complement my Yamaha HS5s.
Thanks Warren and KRK! I have some very inexpensive M-Audio monitors and use an even less expensive set of Logitech PC speakers with a sub included just to check my low end (and for schnitz & schnigglez) - when I eventually upgrade my monitors I think I'll give this KRK sub a 'butchers hook' 👍
The only variation of this question I ask myself on the daily is.... "Do I need a sub in my kitchen or bathroom" (a sub seems to be in every other room, sometimes twice)
I use different subs geared towards hi-fi (Focal Cub2, Yamaha NS-SW 200/300), I like the ones with plenty of connection options (high and low level) and connectors (mine don’t have XLR unfortunately). Don’t take the latest home-cinema sub, even the expensive ones, for they provide you only with a single low-level LFE input jack. But no matter how your eq and set the crossover, you absolutely MUST play pink noise and check the result in terms of sound-pressure level (SPL-meter), AND frequency response to try to approximate a flat decay without major dips and peaks. I use dBmeter on my phone, but you can use RoomEQ wizard (free) with a umik usb measurement mike (not free). Though I would tend to mix on big monitors without the sub, then listen on a true hi-fi system with a sub (by hi-fi, I mean non colored, neutral), as much as with my In-Ears, car radio etc...
Hope you're doing marvelously well, just wanted to say I can see the camera stabilization, maybe try a different setting (I'm presuming perspective mode was used so its using all of the axis').
I just bought the krk rokit 8 g4 do you think I need a sub? To be real i would like a bit more of lows. If yes the krk sub 10 or 12?? BTW 10 costs 400 and 12 720 at my country
I am a bit confused by the crossover behavior. When hooked up normally - signals to sub then out out to the monitors - I thought the subwoofer high passes the signal to the monitors above the crossover point. So I thought you would not have doubled the bass in the region above the low pass to the sub.
Only if something is handling that crossover... in this setup the sub and speakers are not aware of each other, like a good set of integrated monitors and sub connected together would. Looks like Warren was just low passing his sub at the point where he guessed his mains were dropping off... and had to adjust that guess downward until it sounded better. Not the optimum way to go about it, if you ask me.
Sir Warren, I. want to know where and how to include a sub into my Behringer 404HD which has only A and B XLR outs with a corresponding A/B switch. Where you you plug the sub in? Newbie question, TYVM... Great demo, btw!
I haven't it but I liked to buy Presonus sub T8 for my iLoud Micro Monitor, good choise ? At the moment to check low end (too) I use headphones, VRMBOX and Jbl Go2
Hi there! One thing changed allot at lest in my studio with the subwoofer (old genelec with the old 8'' mackies) was the distance of the sub from the listener compared to the distance of the main speakers. Two inches closer make the sub stand up in a way that it was not part of the audio spectrum, some how you can different between the sub and the speakers, what it makes the same effect the other way. But when you have it in the right place, every thing sounds more musical and part of the same system. I'm saying this because even with the lavalier mic, sounds to me like the sub arrays earlier than the other speakers. Try to place them more in the same plane or axe. Thanks for your videos!
Lol its funny this video mentions Dave building an Atmos room with krk speakers. I run a 5.1 Surround Sound system with Rokit RP5 G4 speakers from a Marantz 7702.. I built a KRK V12S Subwoofer for the low end. Sounds AMAZING. I was thinking about getting more rp5s for height channels but I'm running out of plugs🤣🤣😅
Perhaps the presence of a subwoofer is important for rap performers. Or in making chill out music it would come in handy. In guitar music, it is not necessary, in my opinion. P.s. What a great console in such a small room!
Nice Video. I got a set of Yamaha HS80 with the sub. After I joined PLAP, I stopped using it and my mixes started to sound better LOL ( well to my ears anyway, he he ). Sometimes during FF your good self will solo the low lows and check whats going on. So I try to do that with my sub now and again, apart from that it's now a large paper weight for me. A question I would like to ask is this: Is a sub a must for certain genre's do you think?
Thanks for this review Warren... I've got the KRK V8S4's and have been tossing up between the 10" and 12" subs. I had assumed that having 8's as my mains would mean i needed a bigger sub like the 12" as the 10" would have been too close the 8" in size. Seems after watching this I may only need the 10" after all. Entered and followed everywhere :)
the 12" goes deeper down. If thats a thing for you.. The sub cuts off the monitor speakers at the crossover point so it doesnt matter how big they are..If you have the funds go for the 12". you will get more range.
I use Yamaha HS-5's with the HS10, this summer, I disconnected the sub. but now I may reconnect and try to get a foot switch situation going. the reason I disconnected it in the first place was because I couldn't be sure of what was real. I'm a songwriter, not a mixer and needed to take as many variables out of the equation as possible as I tried to learn how to mix better.
I keep my krk 12.4 at 80 hz which is the max , the min its 50hz ....i have them paired with krk classic 7 g3 and focusrite 4i4 3rd gen painted yellow to match the krk color :D
I thought this sub highpasses the output where you have the crossover set. Shouldn't the monitors not be playing 90hz if that's where the crossover is set?
Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter, and a big congrats to Jose M. on winning this amazing giveaway!
@producelikeapro If you had to choose which sounds funnier:
krk s10.4 or Adam Professional Audio T10S
The real benefit of the subwoofer isn't the bass enhancement - it's that you're no longer asking small to medium sized drivers to reproduce low frequencies. These are the hardest frequencies for smaller drivers to handle and generate the most heat and distortion (bad things for speaker performance). The monitors will then "improve" because you're not sending them frequencies they don't handle well.
Very well said! I agree Chuck!
AGREED!
It's also usually best to use subs and satellites from the same manufacturer. What I don't understand here is why KRK felt the need to port a sub (?). It would be better to have more time domain and transient accuracy than so-called, "more bass."
Another benefit of using a sub with smaller drivers is that it helps clarify the "smear" between lower mid and upper bass frequencies, facilitating better eq decisions in that frequency range.

After setting my KRK sub level using the usual methods, pink noise, decibel meter, by ear, etc., I tweak it further using IK’s ARC3 analysis curves…
For example, if after the ARC3 analysis it appears that ARC3 is generally trying to cut or boost sub frequencies to make my room flat, I adjust the KRK sub level very slightly up or down a notch and run the ARC3 analysis process again, until the ARC3 analysis curve shows ARC3 is doing little or no correction down there.
I've been looking at this sub to pair with my KRK V8 monitors. Thanks for the review
Thanks Jason!!
I do have that setup. 1000% recommended.
I can even feel the low frequency on that lovely IN-5s from my subwoofer under my feet.

Thanks for your post. I have In-5's too and have been looking at the Kali sub but it's quite expensive. Will seriously look at the KRK. 😎
I need find a footswitch for krk subwoofer. What pedal are you using? Thanks
What kind of music do you work on?
Yes I use a sub. I’m mixing on a pair of Genelec 8030 and use a Rel R305 sub. It is not ideal but I use the Rel because I already had it (previously use it with my hifi set). That being said, it does help me a lot. It shows me what the low-end rumble does on a acoustic guitar or piano. Boy, that can really move some air.
I'm rethinking what I thought I knew and wanted. Thank you for this.
Your welcome Kathy!
Great comment and also I turn the sub on and off
I've always been asked to be cautious with a subwoofer, especially if the room is not properly treated acoustically. Its easier to treat a room for mids and highs (w rockwool panels and diffusers), however low end acoustic treatment ( bass traps ) is not as simple......so Warren i request you to shed some light on :
1) what if the subwoofer, "booms" excessively or just that due to lack of proper low end acoustic treatment does not actually provide more accurate monitoring?
most bedroom producers or musicians starting out who have bought budget speakers, probably dont have a properly treated room, and so even if the subwoofer is high quality and affordable, does it really help the overall sound (for better mixing)?
2) pls show us the acoustic treatment in your studio, especially the bass trapping .....
Thankyou!
Warren, I have used several subs in the past and have settled on the KRK8's. They work great with my ATC 25's and the URAI 811C large speakers. I set it under the console just like you did and seems to really enhance the listening experience. I DO have to be careful when mixing....
Do you have 2 or one of them?
@@gfunny72 just one.
Paired an Adam sub 12 with a set of S3X-V, made a lot of difference but I think having a bigger set of main monitors is better. If you do get a sub, match it well and spend a enough to get a good crossover. Makes one hell of a difference compared to the built in crossovers.
Thinking about getting one with my A77x’s. Just use them for dj’ing so I don’t know if it will be a good solution.
@@squoblat Thanks for the info.
I have the KRK S8.4 and it pairs well with my EVE SC205s. Perfect for my smallish room!
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Does the 8.4 get low enough? I have a smallish room too and using Focal Shape 50..wasn't sure if should go with the KRK 8 or 10!
Thanks for sharing!!
Subs were always a luxury for me. Great video, Warren! Great content as always.
Thanks Taz!
Thanks ever so much!
I've been waiting for someone to review this sub. Especially as I'm running the Kali IN-8'S. Thanks.
Thanks ever so much Allan!
@@Producelikeapro Have Nate send you a KALI sub so you na test it with your KALIs.
Do you use a subwoofer? What is YOUR favourite subwoofer? Comment below!
Well, favourite, I wouldn't know. But I use an old YaMAHA YST which I only use if I really need to check the low end. Does the job :-).
Is the HS8s considered a good sub? Do you feel like matched speakers/sub matter? I'm running HS8 without the sub right now.
Not yet. I just got the IN-5's when they came out so I'm still getting used to them. However, being a 5-string bass player, I would like that extra low-end available for both the fun factor and to make sure I don't over do it...unintentionally. Intentionally is fine. ;)
I use a Presonus Temblor T8 with my pair of Kali LP6 in a 10'x12' space. For an inexpensive setup, it sounds really good.
I use KRK 8 and was going to buy the KRK sub... great video! I think i will get it now👍
Thx for another great video🤘
That's great to hear!
Just saw hall and Oates and they had like 15 subs, sounded amazing, then you post this. Great timing and I want it.. thanks Warren
Thanks Corey
Hey pal, great video, thanks! Can this subwoofer get loud to a point that it starts pounding your chest, or really make you feel the thumps, shaking everything?
i love your channel...but trying to analyze a 10 inch woofer with a 1/4" mic maybe doesn't translate ...i still want to add a sub-woofer to my studio though
Yes, as I explained you’re not going to hear it through the mic, it’s more about my experience of how it sounds in the room
You don't need LDCs for good low end reproduction. Measurement mics usually are 1/4" or 1/8".
Thanks for your great comment! Which YT pundits say never to use a subwoofer?
I use the yamaha hs8 w the matching sub its a pleasure to use and much easier to spot out unwanted sub frequencies
i have the hs8 aswell and ordered the sub a few days ago. Cant wait for it to arrive because im sure it will be a pleasure 👍
Best review I've ever seen, thanks a lot!
Wow! Thanks ever so much
This question is for anyone.
Did you get the sub and if so did it improve your low end mixing?
i use one! i have all KRKs, 6s for speakers and 8 as a sub. It works great
I currently have a set of 5" krk speakers. Is it worth to add a 12" subwoofer to it, and just lower the low frequencies of my monitors?
@@babahgee2529 if you already have the 12'' Sub use it but it's a lot for 5'' speakers, even 10'' is big i'd say
I have the same sub with the hs7s. I had to turn it right down. Definitely helps with the low end though.
Cool… can you explain more about how Cuba’s does this?
I don't use a sub with my monitors, but I have been wanting to add a sub to my setup for a while now. I''m sure it'll make a big difference.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!!
Great point! I'm going to ring it out with sonar works and see how balanced it is! Good idea Darrell!
Just measure with the sub?
I use Sonarworks and a sub and it works great.
Haha thanks for sharing!

@@dembzz7534 thank you for that!
Very nice review. I may just hit the buy button as I use Kali 5's and they sound a perfect compliment for my vinyl hard house mixes.
I like the way you set the sub up by ear, I tend to do the same thing. Measure later to be sure! Currently implementing an Adam Sub7 in my home studio to complement my Yamaha HS5s.
Id say you need two or more actually . Multiple subs setup correctly act as active bass traps and even out room modes ..
I had been thinking about this as I read the comments
Thanks Warren and KRK! I have some very inexpensive M-Audio monitors and use an even less expensive set of Logitech PC speakers with a sub included just to check my low end (and for schnitz & schnigglez) - when I eventually upgrade my monitors I think I'll give this KRK sub a 'butchers hook' 👍
I use Adam Audio S3X-H with a Adam Audio Sub 10 MK2. Absolutely love the combo. Planning on selling the S3X-H and getting the S3-H.
Hope you're doing marvelously well, just wanted to say I can see the camera stabilization, maybe try a different setting (I'm presuming perspective mode was used so its using all of the axis').
nice, going to get 1 of these by the end of the year, Only make edm so these are going to be great to hear and feel the kick and sub 👍
I love that iconic krk yellow
How do you know whether you need to turn down the low end in your mix vs lowering the volume knob on the subwoofer?
Would putting a sub on an elevated level so the speaker is directly in line with the listener affect anything?
I just bought the krk rokit 8 g4 do you think I need a sub? To be real i would like a bit more of lows.
If yes the krk sub 10 or 12?? BTW 10 costs 400 and 12 720 at my country
I am a bit confused by the crossover behavior.
When hooked up normally - signals to sub then out out to the monitors - I thought the subwoofer high passes the signal to the monitors above the crossover point.
So I thought you would not have doubled the bass in the region above the low pass to the sub.
That’s what i always wondered.
@@weschilton the unit does have a crossover in the sub, I was finding the place where the speakers responded best!
Hi Laurence, the sub is crossing over, I found 60hz worked best on both sets of speakers.
The best sub i have seen (on yt) is a huge like 5 foot diameter beast. That would be neat to build different boxes for.
Yes. Get the 12.4
Brilliant video, nice sound test ,exactly what I was looking for!!!
I use KRK Rockit 5's with a Presonus Temblor 10s. It's made a huge difference (good) for my mixes.
This was great Warren as I'm looking to invest in a subwoofer for some time, Thank you!
Thanks ever so much Michael!
I am using the Adam 8 inch sub to go with my Adam A7x speakers. Surprisingly, it has a lot of low end for being such a small sub.
Sir Warren, I. want to know where and how to include a sub into my Behringer 404HD which has only A and B XLR outs with a corresponding A/B switch. Where you you plug the sub in? Newbie question, TYVM... Great demo, btw!
Very cool. Currently not using a sub at all but have started looking into it recently. Thanks for the upload and info
I got one and regretted it. Way too much low end. I have turned it right down.
What about the room your in? Does that make a big difference
Great review - I want to buy KRK s8.4, I am producing meta music - so now so much low heavy - should it be good for for about 24 m2 leaving room?
Krk 12 inch sub and 8 inch studio monitors... what crossover should I do??
Thanks for this review Warren... I've got the KRK V8S4's and have been tossing up between the 10" and 12" subs. I had assumed that having 8's as my mains would mean i needed a bigger sub like the 12" as the 10" would have been too close the 8" in size. Seems after watching this I may only need the 10" after all. Entered and followed everywhere :)
I'm thinking the same ass you and I have the same speakers.
What did you do?
the 12" goes deeper down.
I'm a songwriter, not a mixer and needed to take as many variables out of the equation as possible as I tried to learn how to mix better.
oh yes, and thanks Warren! You have helped my mixes through PLAP. preesh!
Hi. I have a Home Theater and a chance of buying a Krk 12sh relatively inexpensive. Would you recommend it for this purpose? Thank you!
I keep my krk 12.4 at 80 hz which is the max , the min its 50hz ....i have them paired with krk classic 7 g3 and focusrite 4i4 3rd gen painted yellow to match the krk color :D
I'm using Focal Solo Sub with Neumann KH310s. Sounds excellent.
I thought this sub highpasses the output where you have the crossover set. Shouldn't the monitors not be playing 90hz if that's where the crossover is set?
