Making Gas Powered Hydraulic Power Pack

  • I have many build projects planned, in which a hydraulic cylinder will work, to simplify the construction of such projects in the future, I decided to build a mobile hydraulic power unit, which will power all hydraulic machines. Gasoline hydraulic power unit is more designed for outdoor use and that's what I built it for, it can also work in well-ventilated rooms.
    I used a gasoline engine with the power declared by the manufacturer of 7.5 hp (although I have doubts whether the engine really has such power) and I used a hydraulic pump with a flow of 6L.

    Can I make a few suggestions. You should always have the intake of the pump below the level of oil in the tank . Hydraulic pumps are not designed to self prime and this will wear the surfaces in the pump prematurely by cavitation and lead to loss of pressure very quickly.
    Also the intake line on Hydraulic pumps are supposed to be atleast one size up then the output line. It draws in through that line at a higher flow rate then the introduction of resistance to flow creates pressure which the pump generates on the output side. This will also lead to cavitation in the line. One last thing is try installing a wall in your tank ( just a couple of tack welds ) that separates the intake and return hoses but not completely sealed just enough to alow oil to creep around it. This will limit dirt ,debris and frothing in the oil that also leads to pump failure. I build custom Hydraulic systems at our shop just thought you could benefit from mistakes I've made.

    • @messybench

      Would that pump work in a vertical orientation? Like under a lawn mower motor and use the chassis as the body of your portable unit?

    • @buildthings79
      @buildthings79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@messybench Yes most gear pumps can run in horizontal and vertical orientations. They do not have bearings in them so they are designed to spin on a film of oil they pump that usually .040" thick. That's why making sure there's a continuous flow of oil to them is important .

      @@WorkshopFromScratch - The only "problem" with the plasma cutter is that you have to manually hold up the plasma cutter line 0:09 as the cutter moves across the material. It would be nice to have some sort of spring suspension to do this task for you. A minor thing, but one can see that you must lift up the plasma cutter hose before it binds on the edge of your work 0:13 - fantastic work as always.

    I have a hydraulic power unit. This has a 30 hp Wisconsin VH4 engine powering a hydraulic pump with 10 gallon fluid reservoir. This powered a "manlift" bucket truck. I would like to build several hydraulic projects & power with this universal hydraulic power pack. It could power a log splitter, back hoe, skidsteer loader, stump grinder, saw mill, tree limb shredder or anything that can be operated hydraulically.

    I would route the intake tube to the opposite side of the tank and maybe put a baffle between intake and return. The returning oil gets air bubbles in it and damages the pump or makes it noisy. The distance will help them settle out. Not sure if painting the inside of the tank was a good idea. Hope it doesn't flake off and cause issues.
    Great work and thanks for posting it.

      Great video. I agree with the baffle, trash/condensation will settle out and if something ruptures, you loose less oil. An inspection hole for the spider might be a good idea.

      I would have also prepped in a way for a remote cooler and I am pretty sure the larger size up engines have the same bolt pattern so you can always upgrade to a larger one as many people find that the smaller ones just do not have the power once they have it built.

    Whenever I tack something together the pieces often warp out of alignment when I remove my clamps.
    I'm using TIG though if that makes any difference.

    • @WorkshopFromScratch
      @WorkshopFromScratch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shrinkage and warping are less likely to occur when the weld and its surroundings slowly cool down, when it is important to me that there is no shrinkage after welding I heat the weld and its surroundings with a torch to slow down cooling, gentle hammering around the weld area also works

    • @UndeadSoldierSade
      @UndeadSoldierSade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple of things I've learned from experience. Don't make tanks out of hot rolled unless you remove all of the mill scale. It will start falling off later as an abrasive iron oxide powder. Not good for fuel filters or hydraulic power units. :) Also I have never found a small pneumatic tire that doesn't fail and develop leaks in a year or two. Now I always go for solid rubber or metal. They do make flat proof tires but since they are considerably more expensive, I haven't tried them so can't speak to that. :)
