Always a bit (or a lot) crazy how much injuries are also about bad (or not so bad luck). Even in this case, Conley made contact to Flinch because Booker went at him to sent to the line because of late game situation, and even the initial contact isn't exactly what generates the injury in the sense of forcing his leg to bent absurdly, but because of a certain exact combination of tiny details of the moment he falls. Some specific way his weight is distributed, his foot is planted, his leg is/isn't flexed, etc. And translate to nearly any other injuries (even in being something dramatically bad, or like Giannis before his finals NBA, still being something bad, but that looked potentially near career ending being more like something mild compared to that)

He will NOT have a speedy recovery although he will have access to the best trainers and rehab tools I would think. At the age of 50 I ruptured my left patellar tendon. While I imagine my age may have played a part, i can't imagine that i would have walked away scott free if I was 25 or so. it was a simple slip, like Mr. Finch suffered, but with the perfect angels of awkwardness that lead to the stresses discussed here.

Conley plowed straight into Finch's right knee from the side. Vulnerable hit even for an athlete, but a mid-50s guy is bound to fare poorly. Finch is just lucky it wasn't Ant! Ant would tear the patellar tendon of a cinder block wall.

I can tell you that’s gonna be really painful and tough rehab - I had the ACL reconstruction that uses the patellar tendon graft-and by far that was the most painful aspect of the surgery and rehab. I had the same injury 2 years ago and from my experience it would actually be easier and faster to get off the court the way they did vs a wheelchair. You’d need a wheelchair with an extended leg support on hand. Also being in a sitting position with the leg outstretched and not in a proper brace would be excruciatingly painful. Seems counterintuitive but a wheelchair would be more harmful than helpful.

Needs it right away- it’s completely ruptured and the patella will be contracted upwards and the quadriceps rolled up.
Interestingly , when you rupture your Achilles tendon in this way- waiting a few days is actually OK because you want the ends of the tendon to be a little less friable when they oversew them- the difference being the ends of the ruptured tendon in the Achilles are within the Achilles sheath. There is no sheath for this tendon.

    • @conehed1138

It's mostly just luck, but here are a few things I've done as I've gotten older:
1.Don't practice/play when you are sore or feel pain. Take a couple of weeks off at least if you have persistent pain in an area (like your calf).
      2. Try to limit your explosive movements, play at 90% instead of 100%. You're not a pro athlete, you have nothing to prove. Just have fun. Also if you are really tired, take a break. If your muscles are too fatigued they are going to struggle to provide adequate support to your ligaments and tendons.
      3. It may sound stupid but practice falling safely (also jumping and landing softly). You don't want to tense your muscles or twist in a weird way like Finch did. Just let your body fall the way it wants to naturally, let yourself down slowly rather than making any abrupt movements to save the fall. A couple of bruises from hitting the floor is preferable to a ligament tear.
