Had fuel problems on a 1974 Vw campervan with the Varient 412 pancake/suitcase engine. Also found the fuel hoses were going bad about a year later. Nowadays there's a going concern about the E10 fuel use with older vehicles. Probably call for an E10 ready hose upgrade and there's a Brazilian made fuel pump available that I think will be suitable for the later alternator fitted vehicles. It is also known for the fuel pump position to vary on the Beetle engine (usually now fitted on the top between the oil filler/generator pillar and the distributor. Earlier vehicles may have the fuel pump on the side of the crankcase below the distributor).
Yeah, this one has been a mess the old liner in the fuel tank was definitely dissolving into the fuel .... I've never seen one as bad as what this has been.
