- I found this location to be very interesting, and the material is very nice to cut and polish. To say the least, I'm very impressed with this location and will 100% be going back again to explore the area more.

Yes I enjoyed your video, the place looks like a keeper simply on the variety and uniqueness of what you were finding.
It's Lewisia Rediviva (Bitteroot), in a field of penstemon roezli. So named for Meriwether who first collected it. When the collected specimen finally arrived a few years later on the east coast and water was added-voila- rediviva. (It revived). Important food of the first peoples. Love that area and those rocks.
I said bitteroot first.
Good to see Sarah in the shop more often on these videos!
I do enjoy having her in the shop with me on these kinds of videos.
You did way better than we did. We didn't go far enough away from the sign. But it was only our first time so there was a learning curve.
Same for us! It was our first time out there and we also stayed too close to the parking area. Found some O.K. Small ones. Next time we will need to go out farther and allow for more time.👍
Next time taking a hike away from there should yield better results for you.
Love this style video. The journey with a follow up is a big plus for this viewer 👍.
Thanks man!
Nice sleeve! And nice finds!
Very cool :) 2000 miles from me in Wisconsin... I live vicariously through you.
The flower is bitterroot (lewisia rediviva). I have them out here at my jumpin jeep claim too.
I second that
I gotta say, your videos are a nice break from the mess of sound and sight that is most youtube videos. You concentrate on the rocks.. always liked that.
Thank you! I try to make videos that accurately represent the location and experience that I had.
You can't walk along picking up "littles," get you rock pick out. The whole mountains out there are jasper. Clear the top soil away and swing your rock pick. We got two types from Richardson's Ranch years ago. Right under our feet. Fire jasper and something else, the name escapes me.😁
I really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work please! Best, OWD USMC
I've been to that general area several times, but it was always for the annual Oregon Star Party. I knew there were good rock areas there so now I have an excuse to go back for a hounding hunt!
My favorite was that botrioidal piece that you cleaned up back at the shop.
There's a lot more varieties of interesting finds further out. a very fun area. I love seeing your microscope views and the polished one looks so nice. Thanks for another great video.
I think next time we go out there we will head even further out looking for some different material.
We were there in late July Hot and dusty. Wish I would have saw this video before we went as we didn't do as well as you but still had a great time. I will be back! It pays to have some secret intel for sure!!!!!
July in central Oregon can be a cooker for sure.
my wife and i used to go there in the early 80's
Do you still have some of the rocks you collected back then?
Maury Mountain! Wow you guys did really well!! We were back there in June and didn't get a lot of stuff but there are loads of tiny pieces everywhere it's crazy. It's harder to hunt with tiny humans in tow though haha! Also PSA to folks going out there, we got a flat tire in the parking lot there, probably from a sharp rock based on what the tire guy said. So be prepared!! Lots of nice places to camp in the Ochoco NF too.
Lots of good pickin there. I'm glad you wete able to find some things. Keep havins fun. Hi to Sarah and woof to the pup. Can't wait for your next adventure.😊 😷⚒
Very nice material
Thank you!
A fun field trip, thanks for taking us with you.
I'm glad you liked it!
Wow, ya really got to have an eye for seeing it. The brown agate just didn't look like anything solid to me, until you got it home. Got to say I really like seeing things from other peoples perspective, it has open new worlds to me. Thanks for sharing.
I think a big part of it is the video. So often I find it hard to see what other see on video.
Very interesting can’t wait to see some of those in slabs. Correct me but I thought plume and moss were different? The plate looks like botryoidal crystals. I show a lot of botryoidal s in my agate pieces on my channel… I’m learning so if I don’t know something is I label agate or Jasper it’s all good 👍very good video love the micro too!
That was some beautiful material and it looked very abundant out where you guys were! The Maury mountain is pretty well known material. I would have expected it to be harder to find than that. The stuff you found was pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing your finds and for showing how great the material was. I definitely want to see you guys go back again! Thanks Jared and Sarah!
I think its a hard place if you're like right at the sign trying to dig which is what we didn't do but getting far away from there is well worth it.
Just recently discovered your channel and I'm hooked! We didn't appreciate the endless rockhounding opportunities when we lived out west. Now we live in Ohio and all we have is vanport flint. If you ever want any, I can get you as much as you could ever need.
Welcome to the channel!
The northwest is really a rockhounding paradise.
Nice! The botryoidal plates and that quartz crystal remind me of southeast Missouri. Too bad there's no moss agate. Super cool spot man great video!
Nice finds, video and getaway! I believe there is or was a good place for limb casts near Paulina. I don't have my Rockhounding in Oregon book anymore. Never made it to that area but after rehabbing my leg, will make a go of it! 👍
I believe you are thinking of congleton hollow
While green and brown are probably the most common, there is also red, gold/yellow, and if you're really lucky, there is a seam of purple as well. I've been there many times. Looks like you did pretty good.
I didn't know there was any red or purple out there!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding The red is fairly common. It's usually a green crust where it meets the surrounding host rock, but has lots of red inside. I've only found the purple in one seam. I've managed to find it twice, but haven't been back for a number of years, so who knows if it's all been dug out.
Niiiice! I love working with agate!
I've never been to Maury Mountain but it's on my list of places to visit. Cool material. It looks like it would be worth the trip.
It's a good location and well worth a visit.
Nice info on the location. My favorite finds were Sara's botryoidal chalcedony plate, and terminated crystal point. Thanks for taking us there. Now I really would like to go there.
She always has a tendency to find the best things, it's a good thing I have co-ownership of her finds! ;)
Nice.
Nice bubbly plate Sarah found!
Some of the pits have nice larger pieces you can get out with a chisel/hammer.
Now this place is what ive been looking for!! I only tumble and im sure I can find good agates to tumble in my 15 lb Thumler.
Btw...what about snakes out there?
This would be a great place for that.
We like never see wildlife when were out rockhounding since we are always talking and scaring away the wildlife but I'm sure they are out there.
Good stuff and I’m hoping to check it out next year. So just how far from the sign are we talking about before getting into better materiel?
Some really amazing finds 🔥
Thank you!
Great Polish on all those
Thank you!
Too funny! I am just finishing up on a couple Maury Moss spheres from rough I bought at Quant’s Rock Shop in Prineville because our trip up the mountain wasn’t as fruitful as yours! We stuck to close to the car park. Was way back in 2000! Found the stash in my shed last winter and decided it was time!
I would love to see those spheres if you can email me a photo when you're done with them.
Coming along nicely so far. If I don’t screw them up, I will send you pictures.
That white flower looks sort of like a White Marsh Marigold - 'Caltha Leptocephali'
Aka Elks Lip. But who really knows? Common after snow melt and along marshes.
I wonder if you can take a big truck close enough to this location to be able to collect some. I love Maury mt moss agate. Thanks for the video though.
Not really.
Thanks
I'm glad you liked it.
Was there 2 weeks ago!!!!!!
How did you do?
The flower looks like bitterroot bloom as far as I can find Lewisaia rediviva
Great video! Moss agates are so beautiful and come in such a variety of colors and patterns. Thanks for sharing! Was that a bucket backpack attachment I saw? And BLM states artifacts are anything over 100 years old.
They really are lovely!
I'm sorry, what did you see? I don't generally attach a bucket to my pack unless its empty and we got a good walk ahead of us.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding At 6:14 it looks like Sarah’s bucket has backpack straps on it? Was curious about something like that for when you have a long hike out with a bucket of rocks.
@@775Rockhounding Oh that's chest pack hanging out of the bucket.
Your flower looks like Bitterroot? You found some pretty material and it is a lovely location. It is one of the places that we've had a cougar encounter so it's a good idea to beware when you're all bent over and distracted by the pretty rocks, lol. Cheers!
Yup, second flower in the vid is bitterroot, first flower is a penstemon species, idk which
Is Sara’s find at 9:05 the same terminated crystal as 15:40? If so I’m blown away with your microscope toy!!! The one at 9:05 looks so clear albeit in a quick shot.
That is the same crystal that she found.
flower is bitter root. now send me that piece of moss agate
Flower looks like Bitterroot
Have you seen any sun stone?
I have!
I see all kinds of people selling this stuff online, are there personal claims in this area as well as public collection?
I don't know of any claims, mostly its just people illegally collecting for commercial purposes.
There are claims in the area.
Oregon Bitterroot flower
Caution... Good place for ticks and rattle snakes.
You could say that about most of the western US.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding True. Just saying from experience around there 👍
That’s just fine leave the small pieces for me, I’ll tumble them.
