AirForce Texan Big Bore Airgun = Awesome Power! Barrel Tuning Tips with Hunters Supply

  • I have shot thousands of pellets and bullets with my AirForce Texans Big Bore Airguns and I can tell you one thing... No matter the caliber - these things are HUGE on power and with the proper practice, tuning, and understanding of how these guns shoot at various pressures and with various bullets, you can turn them into laser beam shooters!
    Looking to tuning services and gun smiths to do some extra work on these barrels helps out a ton too. David Williams of Hunters Supply offers a tuning service where he will fire lap, re-crown, cut a lead-in for the chamber in the barrel, and find the sweat spot to dampen the harmonics of your barrel. He will literally cut the size of your groupings in half or even more. Check them out at: www.hunters-supply.com/airforc...

    Your videos are extremely informative,, I bought my 257 Texan In 2021 after watching your review on it. /& After finding out that the 257 & 308 share the same valve, I bought a 308 barrel for it. I just ordered a Blem Texan 457 CF blem on New years morning from the Airforce outlet store for $884. Thank goodness I ordered it first thing in the morning, because by noon on new years the sale was over, & Blem Texan 45 CF was back up to $1100.

    I took my RL suppressor and opened it up and then from Walmart I had purchased the stainless steel wool scrub pads. If you push on the pad it unravels into a single multi- strand of stainless ribbons which I wrapped around the extension and put back in the tube making sure no "wool" was dangling into the inner barrel. Those strands provide extra surface area for the sound to bounce back and forth and further cancelling the report. I need to get a sound meter to do the before and the after on my Texan 357. Similar to stuffing fiberglass or other acoustic damping material as done on other air strippers.

    will be up to the north myself come spring few acres and the new 357 looking forward to the new envirment ,wondering how you feel about useing helium up in the colder regions

      When I did the Helium test it was in the mid 30s low 40s and did great! One word of caution though with any compressed gas. Make sure it is dry as condensation is a killer below freezing. The Helium I use is medical grade for SCUBA diving and I think you can get it for welding too. I am not sure if the welding version would be as moisture free though.

    Awesome a midwest guy is doing these videos. Nice job Chris. I am new to air guns and recently got a .308 Texan to get into the sport. I have been a little frustrated with 100 yd accuracy. I am use to powder burners and not sure how to tune this thing. Honestly, I do not know where to put the power wheel ..lol. I have been shooting Hunter Supply 154's and 118 RN. The 154's seem to shoot the best, but I still get flyers. 1,250 yard shot!?. C'mon Chris , your killing me! Congrats.

    • @UpNorthAirGunner
      @UpNorthAirGunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Thanks man! I totally understand about the accuracy challenge at first and it has taken me some time as well. But it has been a fun journey. I just shot the best 100 yard group this past week (1.18 inch 5 shot group) with my .308 and Hunters Supply 154 Spitzers - check it out: www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=139516.0;attach=216778;image . This group earned me my Expert Rating in the GTA Long Range Challenge.
      Here are some tips... When shooting off a bag or bipod - pull the gun really hard into your shoulder with your non-shooting hand. Normally I shoot with a much lighter hold to allow the gun to recoil back with little resistance - but I found that REALLY shoving it into my shoulder tightened up the groups a TON. These Texans are super hold sensitive so you will need to tinker with your hold techniques. Start at 2500 PSI and shoot a 5 shot group. Than move up to 2600 PSI. I have found that the best accuracy is in the 2500-2700 PSI range. Also - send your barrel to David William at Hunters Supply and have him tune the barrel and fire lap and re-crown. Or get a fire lapping kit and start there. IT HELPS A TON!

      Hey man - sorry for the delay. Lots of "stuff" going on with TH-cam in the last few weeks as you may have heard - UGHH! Anyway - we are back up. So here is a tip that worked for me. Crank the PSI down to 2500 and put the powerwheel a tad back from the fullest power setting (towards the trigger). My hold sensitivity with this thing had to be spot on. Normally I let these things do what they want with an "artillery" hold letting it recoil back naturally with a light hold. I shot a 1.15 inch group -5 shots at 100 yards the other day but an used my non shooting hand to pull it into my should pocket SUPER hard. On that day at that lower tethered pressure and that hold technique I was able to get that crazy good group. Let me know how it goes!

    can you place a video on haw to install the Texan short shroud please, it look like we don't need to do any work to the end of the barrel , if possible . thank you very good video

    • @UpNorthAirGunner

      gelsson reyes it is super simple. Just slides over the barrel and tightens with an Allen wrench. No threading needed!

    I’ve been shooting hunter supply slugs for 2 years now ,,, an they do pretty good ,,, but I’ve recently been shooting nsa an sg ammo much more accurate,,,,I also have a barrel dampeneron my 308 an it tighten up groups a little,,, I have a medium mag spring in it to an I fill it to 3300 hope it works out good for the 308 ,, it worked pretty good on the 45,, there’s not really no sense in changing the spring if not gonna get a higher pressure,, with the medium spring an 3000 fill only got 10 more fps ,,,great video bro,,

      Thanks Kevin! Ya - the top bullets for the .45 Texan for anyone to try in my mind are the Hunters Supply 350 gr. - Aeromagnum Lone Star 265s - NSA 290s. I have been casting my own Bob's boat tail 135 gr. for the .308 and they do well too.

      UpNorthAirGunner if get a chance try the 372 gr nsa,, I’m getting 1 an half inch at 100 ,, I’ll have to try the 350 hs it’s probably the only one I haven’t tried,,lol, I have the 132s ur shooting they get 2 inches at 100 for me,, some one els could probably get better I’m not the greatest shooter,,do u known if you can buy the 24 in barrels for Texan from airforce or do u have to buy the hole carbine ???

      @andyhiggins5759 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Alt I see you discussing accurate ammo with people, my .45 Texan loves the 180 Diablo from African air . I shoot clover leafs at 100 & 3” grips at 150 I know they are a bit light but I dropped both deer I shot with them this year 118&121 yrds. Pretty hard to beat that

    • @kevinalt1707
      @kevinalt1707 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy higgins that’s awesome man,,yeah 180 is plenty enough for deer ,, hell I dropped my deer with a 130 gr 357 pushing 250 fpe at 80 yards,,,an he didn’t go no more than ten yards,,,so really al these real heavy slugs is over kill ,, good for bear though,,ill have to try them pellets one day

    • @andyhiggins5759
      @andyhiggins5759 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Alt what I really like is how flat they fly 0 is 100 yards and from 50 to 125 yrds there’s only about 3” variance

    God I want a airforce texan so bad but they are so inacurate. If you want a long ranger get a .257 condor with Doug noble valve you easily get sub moa accuracy even to longer ranges watch tofazfous video's. I love my .257. If you do you 100% need Doug nobles valve the extreme can't compare to it. I would try to get Doug noble to make machine and fit the barrel. You could murder your old 1250 yard record with the .257 accuracy.
