Yeah its such and Australian thing and I think that series of Victa I have was when Victa was at the absolute hight of their game. Circa 1991 but some purists may disagree and feel the Old 70's mustang VC was the high point
What a lovely little tickle. Two videos in two weeks. Getting back to your best brother. Seed head all over the place at the moment. One of my soccer grounds that i maintain is Santa Anna and its full of sead head at the moment.
Glad it wasn't just my couch (not TifTuf) with the seed head problem. I live Sydney metro area and thought it must be the confusing weather also. Approx 4 weeks ago did a scalp and it appears to have fixed it.
Looks so much better and I love that old 2banger mower they just rev so well, good day for a few beers and lawn vids here in NZ as we get smashed by rain on a long weekend...😂🍻
Send us a little bit of your rain mate we could do with some (currently 38c here) Although I do see we are forecast to get some rain next week so fingers crossed
@@theaussielawn its not great we dont get this much in nz Auckland is under water so far 4 dead last i heard i have never seen it like this before I'm 3hours away from Auckland so we havent seen it that bad here yet hopefully turns around
I’ve put the seed head down to the factor that the last few years as been wet. And this is the first dryer one and the grass is semi stressed. And that’s why it’s throwing seed heads. I’m doing the pgr train as well 😂😂
My tiftuf also has excessive seed head as well, here in SA. It's also a real light green colour, I have struggled to get a nice green colour like previous years.
Looks great Brenton sounds like I need to use PGR for seed head problem I was avoiding using it this season as I suspected it was causing my couch to thatch up very quickly.
@@theaussielawn Brent, did I hear you say PGR after scarifying your grass, are you sure your grass will thicken up in time after thinning it out? Help me understand?
Morning Daniel, wow isn't that interesting you're on the other side of the globe and having the same issue, do you usually have seed head problems or not so? also how has your weather been of recent?
@@theaussielawn We are on the same latitude as NSW and also had rain later than usual and a cooler summer thus far. Historically, had a bit of seed head here and there, but nothing like this.
You make using the 46 look so easy. Im at "jogging pace" with mine, looking like a total mong hahah. Looks like Im doing the Tif tomorrow now - great video!
Up in Brissie with a new wintergreen lawn (about 3 months old) - seed head is going nuts in some parts of the lawn but not others. Would a simple groom (not scarify) also remove the seed head? I'm yet to put PGR down, will do a light scalp/top dress to fill in some spots from the grass slabs that I laid. Very keen to see how the PGR affects things.
Yeah mate use the rest of this season to really set your lawn up ready to go for next summer. Do all the things like scalp, top dress heavy if need be, I really feel like we are all in the same boat with seed head this year so don't stress bout them too much .
How long did you wait before you scalped the tif? Was only a couple months from memory? We're finally starting to get some hot/humid days here so the couch should start going bonkers.
Im not 100% certain but Id say he wanted to focus on his family and quality time with them, Most people will never understand the hours that go into even a 10min vid. There reaches a point where most people decide to call it quits and do other things.
I saw Lawn Solutions put out a video recently about Zoysia Australis, do you have any info on it? It's not the grass you're growing out the back is it?
Haha my inbox went into melt down over night with the release of the Zoysia Australis and up until 7:30am this morning I didnt know the answer to your question. But I can now confirm that my variety of Zoysia isn't Australis but stay tuned as there is a possibility that some of this new Australis may in fact make an appearance on my channel later in the year
I’ll do an update vid soon mate. It didn’t really help reduce the seed head too much. But I’ve noticed that in the last couple weeks all my couch varieties have significantly reduced their seed head production
@@theaussielawn I had a ton of seed head on my TT in Brissy and did a pretty aggressive HOC reset and some sand levelling at about the same time you did your grooming. Seed head is back in full strength a month later. PGR doesn't make a lot off difference either sadly.

maybe i need you to drive down to Muswellbrook and have a look at my buffalo lawn, some areas are growing like wild fire and other areas look terrible and patchy..... it might need a FULL scarify/core/whatever
@@theaussielawn might have to take some pics and send them to you... or offer you some $$$ to travel 20 minutes in your car/truck......lol in all seriousness, this lawn area does not appear to have had any real maintenance done to it and the ground does feel very hard/compact in a lot of the bare areas
Love the video mate! Just had a quick question about how best to go about doing a reno with a dog? I’m worried my top dress will be the perfect playground for the little rascal! 😅
Ohh thats not such an easy one. All those fresh smells in the top dress can prove to be very tempting to a scent focused dog. Ive been lucky with max in general but not sure I have a silver bullet answer
@@theaussielawn might need to keep him inside as much as possible for a couple of weeks! I’ve got kikuyu and rye mixed in so it should bounce back quick!
I laid some Santa Ana this year and have plenty of seed head. Is there anything bad about it other than it's just unaesthetic? I think of it as natural over-seeding that's helping fill in some of my gaps more quickly and improve the lushness of the turf. So I've been leaving it for a few days before mowing. Is there anything bad about doing this?
Hi Ash thats right it's simply unaesthetic although unsightly it really doesn't bother me as much as I know it frustrates some others. Unfortunately as mentioned below the seed is sterile and isn't viable.
Ive actually never tried using spring tines. Im suspecting they will rake out dead stuff to the surface and pull up stray runners (stolons) and allow them to be cut with a mower after the grooming process
With its current blade set up its probably more a groomer /slicer (saw style blades enable it to slice into the soil ) where as scarifying reels can be off set and wont go into the ground etc nor with spring type cutting arrangements. But it's extremely versatile and can take on most roles as needed.
I hate tiftuff. I’m pretty onto lawn care. It’s brown stem continues to grow and your forced to cut higher and higher. If you scalp it. That section will die. If you have a long period of wet. You can’t mow it. And it will get longer. It’s an absolutely incredible lawn for 6 weeks of the year. The rest of the time it’s a total high maintenance PITA. I’ve found you basically have to cut it back to dirt and regrow it each year.
Your not wrong about the 2stroke noise that’s a childhood memory waking up to my dad mowing the grass in the mornings!

It can do mate as it does tighten up the plant but if you get the dosages right it should be not too bad
